Our flooding Red River

I'm sure that many here have heard about the flood-fighting efforts in Fargo, ND, about an hour south of where I live in Grand Forks. Just as everyone started to breathe a sigh of relief about the Red cresting and going down in Grand Forks and Fargo, the National Weather Service today released this statement.

National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service outlooks produced on April 2nd indicate a 75 percent chance that the Fargo/Moorhead area will experience a second crest in late April equaling or exceeding the 41 foot stage, which would set a new record.

For those who don't know, the Red River of the North is rather unusual because it flows from south to north, feeding Lake Winnipeg in Canada. In other words, it thaws on the wrong end.

This is a cool time-lapse video showing the rise of the Red at Grand Forks last month.

This is what happened to Grand Forks in April 1997. Fortunately, our city is now protected from floods by a series of dikes and floodwalls.
