I was lucky enough to live in Britain- between London and Oxford- for 3 years when I was growing up. And lucky again to have an e-mail friend who lives in the same town I did. So i keep an interest in English weather.
A friend of mine here took a cruise along the islands North of Scotland this past summer. It was so stormy the ship couldn't dock at a couple of the stops!
My take on the winter weather N. hemisphere is that the ocean temps are up a degree or two. We are in a sun spot minimum, which means cooler temps. Warm ocean plus colder air looks to equal high winter precipitation; nasty weather. And, so far, it looks like both our areas are really catching it. A white Christmas is one thing - a Blizzard for Christmas isn't a 'gift' most people would want...
