Last Saturday, February 4th, we lost a part of the TVN family.

While en route to his home in Minnesota after chasing in Texas and Oklahoma the previous two days, Andy Gabrielson was the tragic victim of a vehicle accident outside of Tulsa. I am unable to adequately describe the way in which these terrible circumstances have affected those who knew and loved Andy. It has been a difficult time for many, to say the least.

Since word of the tragedy spread last Saturday evening, the extended chaser and weather enthusiast community has come together in a big way. The outpouring of support for Andy's friends and family has been considerable, and a fund has been set up to benefit his young daughter, Reegan (more details found here).

Today, February 9, 2012, the TVN online store is holding a benefit as well, with 100% of the sales going directly to Andy's memorial. As explained on a recent post to Reed's Facebook page, we felt this was an easy way to help out, for those wanting to contribute in even a small way. It should be noted that Andy's incredible 2010 DVD is offered through the store, in limited supply. I watched several chapters of this DVD in Reed's living room last year while he and Andy had a ridiculous argument about whether the Wilkin County, MN, tornado should have been considered a waterspout for some of its lifespan. - It's obvious that Reed will never get over missing that tornado!

There are others whose posts you're used to seeing here who considered Andy among their best friends. They'll share their thoughts when they're ready. I'm not the best person to offer an adequate account of who Andy was as a person, but what I can say about Andy is that, simply put, he was a storm chaser, one with an unsurpassed drive for being there, for seemingly every storm, day or night, high risk or see-text. In 2010 alone, he saw over 80 tornadoes--an unfathomable number for a few months' worth of effort--and captured what many consider as some of the most amazing, extraordinary video of all time. He was also very dedicated to storm reporting, as anyone who has Spotter Network knows, and served as an in-field correspondent for The Weather Channel's Tornado Hunt. He was the best there was at what he did, and was one of the most humble people you could ever meet. That's what I admired about him the most.

Andy's friends and family appreciate your continued support through this most difficult time. I'll leave you with these links where you can help with his memorial, as well as a video that hopefully shows how much fun he was to be around. We'll sure miss him.

Severe weather 2/2 - 2/3, Much needed rain for the Plains coming, Who stole the Dominator? http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1415-severe-weather-22-23-much-needed-rain-for-the-plains-coming-who-stole-the-dominator http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1415-severe-weather-22-23-much-needed-rain-for-the-plains-coming-who-stole-the-dominator day2otlk_1730-1Today kicked off the start of the first of several days of severe weather for the southern Plains/ MS River Valley.  It began across Arkansas, where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is currently in place for SE AR, N. LA and extreme NW MS--where an 86 mph wind gust was recorded at the Stuttgart, AR airport earlier!

More severe weather is possible, starting tomorrow afternoon/evening for portions of NW TX and SW OK.  Early tomorrow, moisture will begin advecting northward where a stalled-out cold front will retreat northward, as a warm front, across Central TX.  A potent shortwave will then begin to move across the slight risk area, issued by the Storm Prediction Center, and should reach NW TX and SW OK by 0z (6 p.m.).  At the moment, it looks as though the cap may hold until after dark, but should convective temps be reached and stronger forcing makes its way faster, the cap could break across the area, and supercells are likely with large hail, damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes are possible.  The more likely scenario is for storms to fire after dark and be ongoing throughout the night.

On Friday, an upper-level low will move across NC OK and SC KS and strong mid-level flow will rotate around it into KS down into Northern/Eastern Texas.  Heavy rain and ongoing storms are possible during the morning hours, and may continue developing during the day in these areas.  IMO, the best shot at tornadoes will be closer to the cold-core low where 500 mb temps will be -18 to -22 C, and a forecasted mid-level dry slot could clear out the areas--leading to extremely low-level lapse rates and strong surface vorticity, where low-topped supercells and isolated tornadoes will be possible. Further south, across southern OK and northern TX, damaging winds and large hail should be the main threats.  At the very least, this system wil dump much needed rain across drought-stricken TX, OK and KS, where it will be welcomed!

TVN will be out chasing this event with, at least, D2 and possibly D1 on Friday, so be sure to follow Reed's Facebook fan page and Twitter page for updates in real-time! And don't forget to check both days on our LIVE streaming page where there will be numerous live video streams covering this severe weather!

Lastly, check out this hilarious Youtube video, created by Bosch, of the Dominator getting stolen!

Mid-South braces for 2012's first severe weather event http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/36-tornadoes/1414-mid-south-braces-for-2012s-first-severe-weather-event http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/36-tornadoes/1414-mid-south-braces-for-2012s-first-severe-weather-event
1-22-12-outlook1-22-12-nam_221_2012012212_f12_wspd_500_mb1-22-12-nam_221_2012012212_f12_wspd_850_mb1-22-12-dewpointsA powerful Winter storm system currently making its way into the Ozarks and middle-Mississippi Valley region will interact with an unseasonably warm, moist Gulf airmass later this evening, prompting what is likely to be the first large-scale severe weather episode of 2012.
Forecast models continue to suggest that strong, southerly wind-fields in the lowest levels of the atmosphere will readily transport this uninhibited current of Gulf moisture well into the Mid South and lower Ohio Valley, allowing dewpoints in the mid to upper 60s to migrate potentially as far north as the Missouri bootheel by sunset or just thereafter; this should provide plenty of fuel for thunderstorms that are likely to develop ahead of a cold front that will sweep across Arkansas later this afternoon. Low and mid-level wind shear is very favorable for thunderstorms with sustained rotating updrafts; any storms that are able to develop along and ahead of the front will have the potential for strong, possibly long-lived tornadoes, especially, and unfortunately, after dark, as the low-level wind shear is forecast to intensify in conjunction with the arrival of the most abundant moisture from the Gulf. The possibility of a nighttime tornado event presents an especially dangerous situation for residents of central and Eastern Arkansas, west Tennessee, northern Mississippi. As always, persons in the outlined areas are strongly urged to have their severe weather plans in place, monitor local media and, above all, heed warnings when they are issued--NOAA Weather Radios with fresh batteries are a must for events such as these. Numbers of storm chasers will be in the field as well; their activities can be monitored by following our Live Page. Stay tuned, as Reed will be providing updates as possible, from Twitter and Facebook, as the day unfolds.

First significant tornado of the year, CES show in Las Vegas! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1413-first-significant-tornado-of-the-year-ces-show-in-las-vegas http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1413-first-significant-tornado-of-the-year-ces-show-in-las-vegas
img_0012After a couple of tornadoes in SE TX this week (rated EF-1, EF-0), the first significant tornado (EF-2 or greater) occurred on January 11th, near Ellenboro, NC and was rated an EF-2.  Unfortunately, there were several reports of injuries, one serious, and people trapped in homes.  Just a day before, in Texas City, TX, and EF-1 impacted the mall, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

This same system, dumped over 10 inches of snow in Midland, TX where they shattered an all-time record for total snowfall in a year with over 20 inches, set in 1947!  It eventually dumped snow in portions of IL, IN, WI and MI, where much needed snow was welcomed across the area.  It has been an unseasonably mild winter and that looks to be the same for the next 10 days across much of the nation, thanks to a strong La Nina in place.

Chris Chittick and Dustin Feldman attended the 2012 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas this past week, where they were exploring all of the new technology being shown off for 2012!  It's one of the largest shows Las Vegas has, where over 150,000 people were expected to attend with over 2,000 vendors! Here is a photo from their trip!

Winter Storm for TX/NM, Severe Weather possible for the Southeast! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1412-winter-storm-for-txnm-severe-weather-possible-for-the-southeast http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1412-winter-storm-for-txnm-severe-weather-possible-for-the-southeast us

After record lows in the Southeast and record highs for the Plains/Midwest last week, an upper-level low has made its way to the Desert Southwest, where it will first dump snow for portions of SE NM and W. TX late tonight.  A winter storm warning is in effect for the mentioned areas and up to 7 inches is possible!  The map shows a current view of the watches/warnings currently in effect!

Monday, the upper low will continue to deepen over parts of southeast TX and limited boundary-layer moisture will advect northward in response to its approach.  Ridging aloft and weak lapse rates will limit instability, but should storms evolve, especially along the coastline, the shear in place definitely supports supercells and isolated tornadoes.  Nevertheless, much needed rain will develop in drought-stricken Texas and flash flooding is possible in some areas, with up to 4 inches of total rainfall possible by tomorrow night / early Tuesday.

Tuesday, rain will linger across SE Texas as the upper low moves further east across extreme Eastern TX.  Deeper moisture is expected to push north through SE AR, LA, MS and AL, where a warm front will exist.  Again, instability will be limited, but shear profiles are supportive of supercells, including tornadoes.  Heavy rain will also exist in these areas and flash flooding is definitely possible across the mentioned areas.

Stay tuned to TornadoVideos.Net as the next blog entry will explore TVN's unforgettable 2011 season!  There will be a lot of new, amazing stuff happening in 2012 for TVN, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter, as well as here, in the upcoming months!

High Winds in California, Upcoming Winter Storm! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1409-high-winds-in-california-upcoming-winter-storm http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1409-high-winds-in-california-upcoming-winter-storm 20111201_09135520111201_091222

TVN's own Dustin Feldman took these photos of the wind storm in Montrose, CA which affected much of California and adjacent states yesterday!  A weather station at Mammoth Ski Resort in the California Sierra recorded an incredible 146 mph wind gust with a temperature around 7 degrees!!!  This system created a lot of damage and left hundreds of thousands without power, mainly in California, and school was canceled in some of the affected areas.  There has been extensive damage and, according to the NWS, is one of the biggest wind storms in nearly a decade for California.  Southern California was the hardest hit, where an estimated 300,000 people were without power.

Areas in the Texas Panhandle, and in Eastern New Mexico are already under a freezing rain advisory from north of Lubbock to Carlsbad, NM starting late this evening.  The NWS says significant icing is possible areas NW of Lubbock!  This system will also impact the Central Plains, on Friday, where up to 8 inches is possible from NW KS northeast to E. NE.  Gusty N/NW winds will create blizzard-like conditions, so if you're planning on traveling, please make sure to pay attention to local media outlets and prepare yourself for a winter storm!
Stay tuned to TornadoVideos.Net for the latest as there will be streamers out this weekend!

The season finale of "Storm Chasers" is tonight at 10 E/P and will feature the tornado outbreak in Nebraska/Kansas on June 20th of this year.  TVN intercepted an EF-2 tornado north of the town of Ravenna, NE (above) and was their best intercept of the year!  Next Thursday, at the same time, the "Behind-The-Scenes" episode will air, giving viewers an inside look at how the show is made, be sure to watch that as well!

Below, is another video of Monday's chase shot by Extreme Tornado Tours' Chad Cowan on Monday's chase; Chad was filming behind D2 and shot some incredible stuff!  This "Tipton, OK" tornado was upgraded to an EF-4 tornado today by the NWS in Norman! Be sure to follow Reed's twitter (@reedtimmerTVN) tonight as he'll be tweeting during the entire episode!  Stay tuned for more of Monday's tornadofest as we'll be showing more videos from that!

TVN Intercepts Violent Tornado! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1405-tvn-intercepts-violent-tornado http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1405-tvn-intercepts-violent-tornado
TVN deployed from Norman where we headed to our first storm of the day just south of Duke, OK.  It had a rapidly rotating wall cloud, but quickly dissipated and another supercell blew up just west of Frederick, OK, where we headed east to intercept it.  As we approached the town of Tipton, OK, a rock-solid, back-sheared updraft was just above us, but the hail core temporarily shrouded our view.  As we drove through Tipton, OK very large hail was observed up to the size of tennis balls and the rain began to clear as we moved east.  Just as we passed through Tipton, rain cleared-- and out of nowhere, a large stovepipe tornado emerged out of the rain, 1/4 of a mile away, directly to our south!  We then crept up to it and tried to judge its movement, thinking it would move more northeast than north at first.  After  quickly analyzing, however, it was clear the track was going to be further west, and move due north, so we blasted back west and intercepted the strong tornado, on the outer edge, (seen in the video) as it crossed the highway immediately east of Tipton.
We then turned back around where we turned north on a muddy road and noticed our friend Andy Gabrielson close to the tornado.  We observed him backing up and noticed a sudden jerk in his vehicle, and his vehicle subsequently rolled (as you'll see in the video).  Our demeanors went from extreme excitement, to pure panic as we just watched our good friend roll his vehicle (which was not from the tornado).  TVN flew up to him as fast as we could and, thankfully, Andy only had a couple of cuts on him and we were able to pull him out, and continuing the chase.
After that, we observed a large tornado to our east, as we raced to catch back up to the storm, where we witnessed at least 4 more tornadoes, one within a 1/4 mile.  Reed said this was one of the best intercepts to date!  Tornadoes in November, in Oklahoma, are pretty rare-- the last in 2005--and photogenic tornadoes in November are almost unheard of!  This will definitely go down as one of my favorite chase days ever and my first intercept driving into a strong/violent tornado in Dominator 2!  Stay tuned for more pictures and video as this is only just the beginning!

The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk out today for portions of SW OK and NW TX.  The risk for strong tornadoes is also there for this afternoon/evening as the low-level jet cranks up and the greatest area is depicted in the photo to the left.  TVN is deploying from Norman shortly in D2 and will be testing out the new quad helicopters in the field that have cameras attached to them (and eventually will record data).  Stay tuned to Reed's Facebook page and his Twitter account (@reedtimmertvn) for live video blogs throughout the day and continuous updates!  And also check out the LIVE video page for storm chasers streaming this event! ]]>

Storm Chasers has moved to a new time starting tomorrow, Thursday, (Nov. 3rd) at the same time of 10 - E/P!  I believe this will focus on the high risk day where TVN got a little too close to a tornado (that formed right in front of us in the trees) in SE Missouri near the town of Grandin!  Here is the video of that below!  Then next Thursday, the finale of will air and you definitely don't want to miss out on that!
Cold weather is sweeping across the Plains right now, with even snow in some areas.  There's even potential for some severe weather this weekend into early next week, so stay tuned as TVN will chase anything that happens!

Northern Lights over the US, Italy Waterspout, Snow in Colorado, Hurricane Rina! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1402-northern-lights-over-the-us-italy-waterspout-snow-in-colorado-hurricane-rita http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1402-northern-lights-over-the-us-italy-waterspout-snow-in-colorado-hurricane-rita 2011_10_24_27701On Monday night, one of the most spectacular northern lights displays (especially for myself) happened across the US, anywhere from Wisconsin to Del Rio, Texas!  It was sparked by a CME (coronal mass ejection) that weakened earth's magnetic field and sparked a nice Aurora Borealis show across the United States.  Visually, to the naked eye (from the Kansas City suburbs), I could only see the majestic red "wave" for about 5-10 minutes, but my camera picked up the red and green glows for a good 30 minutes afterwords.  Due to no tripod, I was only able to capture them on my car roof and they didn't turn out as well as I've liked.

Instead, I'm showcasing fellow storm chaser and "king of storm photography", Mike Hollingshead's stunning capture of the event (left) near Blair, Nebraska during the peak intensity.  Mike really has a niche for storm photography and has been a huge influence on my own personal photography--he's nothing short of humble and a nice guy as well.  Be sure to check out his account of this event, which hasn't reached this far south since December of 2006!

img_2722On Tuesday, Extreme Tornado Tour's Olivier Stagier and swiss meteorologist, Dean Gill, had an exciting afternoon where they drove all morning to Northwest Italy, where a powerful system was affecting the area.  In the Cinque Terre area in Liguria, between Portofino and La Spezia and near the coastal town of Riomaggiore, they saw the formation of an intense waterspout!  This system was responsible for killer floods which destroyed homes and closed down interstates and railways.  Stay tuned for the video of this amazing video!
From record highs in the 80's, to over a foot of snow in some places, Colorado has seen its wild swing of weather already this week!  On average, Colorado only receives about 4 inches of snow in October, but some places have easily surpassed that.  The snow, wet and heavy, on the fall branches, was responsible for numerous power outages in the Denver metro area.  1-2 inches of snow is also possible tonight in the western Texas Panhandle, where a winter weather advisory is out until morning.  This area needs all of the moisture they can get due to the extreme drought conditions.
Hurricane Rita is currently at a Category 1 with winds of 85 mph sustained and is located about 120 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico and is expected to reach the eastern coast of the Yucatan Penninsula.  She should maintain hurricane strength but a gradual weakening tonight and into Friday is expected.  Stay tuned to TVN for the latest!

Tonight is episode of 5 of Storm Chasers, which airs at its usual time of 10/9 E/C on the Discovery Channel.  I was woken up from a nap, from a panicked Reed, and ended up having a very close encounter with a sunset tornado near Ada, OK.  Tune in to see what happens!  As always, tell us what you think of this week's episode!  Next week's episode will feature a deadly tornado outbreak in Oklahoma, where the TVN team intercepted 6 photogenic tornadoes, including one aimed directly for Reed and Joel's house!

Slight risk for the TX/OK panhandles today! Hurricane Jova to make landfall in Mexico tonight! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1398-slight-risk-for-portions-of-txok-panhandles-today-hurricane-jova-to-make-landfall-in-mexico-tonigh http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1398-slight-risk-for-portions-of-txok-panhandles-today-hurricane-jova-to-make-landfall-in-mexico-tonigh day1otlk_1630-1174245w5_nl_sm

Today, there is a slight risk for severe weather for portions of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, and a smaller risk further north from Kansas into Nebraska.  The Storm Prediction center has low probabilities for a tornado/hail/wind for the slight risk area shown on the left.  The latest RUC analysis (17z) actually shows the greatest potential for diurnal storms into Kansas and Nebraska between 23-0z (6-7 p.m.) where forcing is stronger and the cap is weaker.  Forecasted hodographs in west-central Kansas are supportive of supercells with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats--but an isolated tornado around dusk can not be ruled out.  Further south into the panhandles, the same is also possible, but storm initiation is still in question due to weaker forcing and mid/high level clouds which could hinder instability potential. Stay tuned, as storm chasers will be providing live video streams across the area, so be sure to tune in later as things unfold!

Hurricane Jova has weakened some (currently at 100 mph max sustained winds or a Cat 2 hurricane) but is still expected to cause havoc along the pacific coast between Barra de Navidad and Puerto Vallarta late tonight.  It could dump as much as 20 inches in some spots in Mexico and could cause significant flooding from the storm surge as well.  The map, above, shows the projected path of Hurricane Jova and current warnings for it by the National Hurricane Center.

Stay tuned for more chase reports from last week as October treated a few of us to some great structure and funnels!

Slight risk for much of the High Plains tomorrow! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1397-slight-risk-for-much-of-the-high-plains-tomorrow http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1397-slight-risk-for-much-of-the-high-plains-tomorrow day2otlk_1730Modest moisture return and weak instability will limit a more widespread severe weather event tomorrow afternoon/evening, but all modes of severe weather are expected--including the risk of isolated tornadoes.  The photo, left, shows the areas highlighted, in yellow ,by the Storm Prediction Center for tomorrow for the greatest severe weather threat.  Current surface observations show mid to upper 50 dewpoints in the Texas Panhandle with lower 60 dew points onshore near the Texas gulf coast. Moisture return will try and make its way up from the gulf, but is rather shallow, and will advect northward as far north as western South Dakota by midday tomorrow.

With the approach of a strong mid-level trough and strong surface heating beneath cool, mid-level temps--this will result in instability of 500-1000 j/kg for much of the highlighted area. This could be enough for the risk for large hail, strong winds and the possibility of a tornado or two.  The two areas, I believe, that have the greatest threat for tornadoes are in the southern target (towards dusk) in the Texas Panhandle into southwest Kansas and somewhere in between I-70 and I-80 in Kansas and Nebraska.

The forecasted LCL's (cloud bases) are rather high in the southern target, but a higher elevation, deeper moisture/stronger instability under a strongly-sheared environment could be enough for a tornado or two, possibly just after dark.  The more likely area for a daylight tornado, would be in the early stages of storm initiation in western South Dakota/ NW Nebraska with lower LCLs (cloud bases), but given the weak instability/moisture return and backing of the mid-level winds, strong winds and large hail seem more likely.  It's a tough forecast for those storm chasing tomorrow, but my current plan is to head west on I-80 and determine tomorrow morning a more defined target.

Stay tuned as numerous storm chasers will be out and about in the slight risk area and will be streaming LIVE video as things unfold.  Friday, will once again bring another chance of severe weather a little further east!

Storm Photo of the Week, Storm Chasers Episode 2 Airs Tomorrow! http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1396-storm-photo-of-the-week-storm-chasers-episode-2-airs-tomorrow http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/1-latest-news/1396-storm-photo-of-the-week-storm-chasers-episode-2-airs-tomorrow Check out this amazing photo by Tom Hannan on April 27th, 2011 near Rose Hill, MS.  He estimates he was about 500-600 feet away and could hear the roar--a little too close for comfort!  This tornado was rated an EF-4, had a damage path of 65 miles and sadly took the lives of 7 people.  TVN stayed the night in Meridian, MS that night and heard of the fatalities, from this tornado, while chatting with local law enforcement.  A lot of these areas, affected by the April 27th deadly tornado outbreak, had very little media attention as some did this year, and are still picking up the pieces and dealing with the aftermath.  Hopefully, everyone is in the process of healing now and can get their lives back to as normal as possible, as soon as possible.

Storm Chasers, continues tomorrow (Sunday) at 10/9 E/C on The Discovery Channel, with a memorable chase near St. Louis, MO, where an EF-4 tornado affected the international airport after dark!  What did everyone think about the first episode(s)? See everyone tomorrow night.

Stay tuned, as this quiet week of weather ends, a much more active weather pattern week is in store...
