New incredible video of the second tornado near Quinter KS on May 23 2008. This video was shot by solo Storm Chaser and friend Colt Forney. When it crosses I-70 he is 3/4 of a mile away. Notice the car destroyed in the ditch at the end of the clip. Colt went down to check on the person to realize it was a fellow storm chaser, luckly emergancy crews were just down the road and were able to respond in minutes.

The headlights pointing toward the camera in this new video of the car that was nearly hit by the tornado was TVN Stream 4!!!  Check out the end of the second video clip below from Dave Holder and John Harris, and you'll see how close they came to this strong tornado!

Supercells in western OK/TX Panhandle!

Supercells have developed late this afternoon over extreme western Oklahoma the Texas Panhandle in an environment characterized by sufficient deep layer shear, but relatively weak low-level shear.  A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the area with large hail and strong straightline winds the main threats.  The tornado threat will be limited by fairly high cloud bases and 850 mb flow of less than 10 knots, but with boundary interaction there is a chance for a brief spin-up.  We're keeping a close eye on Hurricane Ike, so check back for updates!

I like IKE!

Ike might be a small hurricane in terms of size, but I guarantee it packs a punch. Ike has been upgraded several times today by the NHC (including a non scheduled update) and is now rated a Cat 3 with 115mph (100kt) winds and a central pressure of 960mb.

Ike is forecased to be a strong Cat 3 to moderate Cat 4 for the next few days as it aims for the Bahamas. In about 7 days Ike might get luckey enough to shoot the gap and make it into the Gulf with minimal land interaction. This could mean another large evacuation for the Gulf Coast.

Tornadoes likely again today across LA/MS!

Strong tornadoes are possible again today with the eastern outer bands of Gustav, especially southeast of the center where instability will be sufficient.  CAPE values are even exceeding 3000 J/kg across parts of southern LA, which is extremely high for a tropical cyclone setup.  20 tornadoes reports were received yesterday, with extensive damage reported to many well-constructed homes - and sadly, 1 fatality in southeast Louisiana.  Today could be a repeat of yesterday, especially across eastern LA where low-level wind shear and instability will coexist.  The RUC analysis from early afternoon for 0-1 km EHI is shown below, with values nearing 5 east of Alexandria.  Stay tuned for updates as this severe weather event continues throughout this afternoon/evening.

Tornadoes likely today

Tornadoes are likely today in the eastern outer bands of dying Gustav across central/southern MS and Louisiana, especially as the heating of the day commences.  17 tornadoes were reported yesterday across the Central Gulf Coast as Gustav made landfall, and many of them were damaging.  Once/if Gustav gets entrained in the westerlies the tornado threat will likely increase..  The Gustav video is currently being uploaded and should be available shortly!  Not quite the storm of the century but still some good hurricane video.
