The second shortwave produced a few small thunderstorms with sleet over parts of central Oklahoma this morning, but accumulations of ice were minor.  Most of the widespread heavy precipitation developed just to the east of Norman/Oklahoma City, with parts of southeast Oklahoma receiving heavy freezing rain for most of the afternoon Saturday.  Below is a radar image just before the brief, heavy sleet began here in Norman.

Moderate to heavy freezing rain is moving in to central Oklahoma as of 9:00 am CST.  As expected, the arctic front moved south through OK at a much faster rate than the models predicted, leaving temperatures in the upper twenties in central OK by Friday morning.  A freezing rain advisory has been issued for today, in addition to the ice storm warning tonight through Sunday to account for this early beginning.  However, this advisory may need to be upgraded to an ice storm warning soon given the heavy precipitation and cold temperatures.  Ice has already been accumulating on cars and grassy surfaces.  Pictures to come soon.

A major ice storm will slam central OK this weekend as a strong but shallow Arctic air mass and heavy convective precipitation coincide.  NWS Norman stated the following in their early morning discussion: "There could be a swath of ice accumulation measured in inches".  Right now, it appears that the most significant ice accumulations will occur along and just south of I-44.  Stay tuned for more updates.

MAJOR ice storm possible over OK on Sat/Sun

Significant ice accumulations are likely over central and northern OK from Friday night through Sunday.  A shallow Arctic air mass will drift southward across OK on Friday, and a strong vorticity maximum will produce heavy precipitation along and north of the front beginning Friday night.  Surface temperatures across central/northern OK will drop below freezing Friday night just before the heavy precipitation arrives, and with very warm temperatures just above the surface, the stage will be set for a major freezing rain event this weekend in OK.  The 00z Thursday WRF forecast temperature at 12z Saturday and 12z Sunday are shown below:

The WRF model forecast precip (6 hr accumulated) for the same times are shown below.  The first wave of freezing precipitation over central and northern OK will fall Friday night, with 0.25-0.5" ice accumulations.  The second wave of precipitation will fall Saturday night into Sunday, with another 0.5+" of additional ice accumulation.  However, this assumes the WRF verifies.  Stay tuned to TornadoVideos.net for further updates.
