The GFS has finally come into agreement with the European in the forecast evolution of next week's storm system. If these model forecasts verify, then significant tornado outbreaks will be possible from Wednesday through Friday from the Central/Southern Plains northeastward to the Great Lakes region. The long-range models are now forecasting a very large, semi-permanent trough to amplify over the Western U.S. by mid-week, and remain nearly stationary into the weekend. Since this event is still 5 days out, there is substantial uncertainty on the timing and exact geographical location of the severe weather, if it occurs. Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to this potentially significant severe weather event(s). The 500 mb forecast map for Thursday evening tells the whole story:
