Supercells in western OK/TX Panhandle!

Supercells have developed late this afternoon over extreme western Oklahoma the Texas Panhandle in an environment characterized by sufficient deep layer shear, but relatively weak low-level shear.  A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the area with large hail and strong straightline winds the main threats.  The tornado threat will be limited by fairly high cloud bases and 850 mb flow of less than 10 knots, but with boundary interaction there is a chance for a brief spin-up.  We're keeping a close eye on Hurricane Ike, so check back for updates!

Wes made a nice forecast for this, and it looks like he has found some nice storms out there this evening. Maybe hell have some hail & structure video tomorrow? He was real close to a shear marker there for a while, too.

No tornadoes or spinups for me, but I did get to enjoy 2 wall clouds in view at the same time as the sun went down with a 3rd storm forming on top of me. The front crashed way past what the models showed, but the day was way better than what I really expected. Major chaser convergence, there were about 4 cars out there. I will post some pics in the forum in a minute and hopefully a nice timelipse video in a few days.

Mannnn i know the 5 day track isnt to be depended on much, but even that 3 day track is becoming a bit concerning for the Gulf with IKE. =/

Ben.. It is a concern for the Gulf.. It looks like se TX to LA may "or should" be planning for the punch.. A good hope is that Ike will "skirt" lower along in Cuba, so it will be slowed a bit in strength. This one although... has the character to be a fisty little donut..

Tornado, reported by NWS storm survey.

Confirmed EF1 tornado, maximum wind gusts 95 mph. Occurred in East Allentown (PA) and moved from east to west. Movement speed was about 30 mph. Path length one mile and path width 50 yards. Was on the ground for about two minutes. No reported injuries. Estimated damage to school at 500,000 dollars. About 50 properties damaged, about 100 trees damaged or destroyed.

A little to close to home. I live about 1 mile away from where this occurred, crazy.
