Super-Typhoon Jangmi is currently a monster, with a textbook 18 nm perfectly clear eye, and maximum sustained winds of 135 knots with gusts up to 165 knots!!! The center of this intense typhoon is 275 nm southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, and is heading west-northwesterly at 13 knots. Jangmi is expected to weaken slightly before landfall due to relatively cool sea surface temperatures immediately east of the island, but is still expected to pack maximum sustained winds of at least 120 knots at landfall. I heard from James Reynolds yesterday, and he said he's currently heading south from Hong Kong to Taiwan for intercept. He's likely positioning on the island today somewhere south of Taipei on the east coast of the island. I'll let you know if I hear any updates..

The official track of the Joint Typhoon Warning Center shows Super-typhoon Jangmi making landfall just north of the east-central coast of Taiwan in the midst of a recurve to the northeast. Given a slight acceleration of the forward speed, the typhoon will likely make landfall just before 12z on the 29th. I'm sure James will have video from inside the stadium-effect eye by then!

Right on REED !! Is this one insane or what? I think you mean 135 to 160 MPH mate... It was over 250 KPH this am. What an eye huh? Stoked for James... Hope he gets some good footage.. I have been saving animations for all of the major cyclones that make landfall... I thought Hagupit was intense... This one just gets me going like a kid with excitement... As soon as the season winds down its going to be fun perusing all the landfall animations I have been collecting.
James... If you are on this... try to get the transition of wind to eyewall... calm... back to eyewall... wind... That would be the coolest sequence of the changes all editied in on a video... Looking forward to this if someone can pull it off... Mr. Reynolds? You are the man... Be safe in this one... looking forward to seeing the intensity of this spinner...
Stay safe James!!! Look forward to your footage!
wah! i wished i was in taiwan... but i don't have the funds to chase it through... waaah!!! anyway, jangmi drop down to cat 4... still not bad... as for the new LPA west of caroline islands, its slowly developing due to increased vorticity... and just what i said, if it landfall on my country, i will TRY to chase it...
PS. i will call every saints and gods just to make this LPA develop and hit my country with a cat 5 strength *evil laughs* i want show!
@JC "hagupit" was the filipino name given by PAGASA (the weather station of the philippines) which translates in english, "whipping"
anyway if you want more flash animations of cyclones that developed over the pacific, check this link out

david (webmaster) is my friend so don't worry if you eat all of his bandwidth! hahahaha! no don't worry, david is kind... if you have any plans to chase in my country contact him he would be glad to tour you out!
ooops my mistake... hagupit was the right term for the international name of that typhoon... the name that was actually given by the PAGASA was "nina"
anyway hagupit was a tagalog word... that's why i made the assumptions sorry again...
anyway about the 2nd LPA:
Tropical Disturbance 99W has maintained its organization while drifting WNW across the Caroline Islands...and was located near lat 8.3N lon 139.7E...about 220 km SE of Colonia, Yap Island or 1,475 East of Mindanao...has sustained winds of 30 kph...and moving WNW slowly.
looks like indeed a great show!
Colonel Burton... Thanks for the info mate.. Also on the information for TD-99W. That LPA seems to going active from sat images viewed... This is indeed a great show as you put it.. Really enjoy monitoring these monsters when they are peaking and landfall. Great stuff to monitor remnant behavior as well.
Also.. the path of the predicted remnants of Jangmi is really interesting as it merges within the Aleutian vicinity.. By the models and currents.. I can almost bet on mid week of Oct 6th..ish northwest US will have some weather as oceanic monitoring continues to show me..
Look at this sat view.. You can see the fueled systems coming down from the Gulf of Alaska. If you look closely.. You can actually indicate what is happening between the Typhoons hitting the West Pacific.. continuing their remnant path and the continuation of this for some PNW US storms... The one about to hit near the west coast of US CA was influenced by Sinlaku.. It is apparent this path is influenced by the Japenese "ocean"current which is responsible for the remnant flow pattern...

Amazing data noted here for all of us weather enthusiasts..
Now what is also good for JC on my sporting fetish... is I can be really sure footed in large waves that will hit the US coast. way ahead of model predictions...
James... Be safe... You crazy matey!!! But I wish I was in your location... Lookin forward to the footage.. Thanks Reed for posting this blog title.
man this hurricane is crazy and also wanted say i saw the firstlook for stormchaser at movies about season storm chasers looks awsome for heads up
@JC - thanks for the sat pic! and you're not alone... it is true... after slashing in the pacific, some "remnants" continue on to alaska due to japan oceanic current because based on the data of PAGASA, an estimated 15-25% of the cyclones go WNW route hitting philippines and then taking a ENE enroute to japan... because the japan current is a cycle, after reaching alaska (if it manage to store some fuels) it will continue down to PNW US redeveloping to another disturbance... if pacific is kind enough to refuel that disturbance, there goes your hurricane... sadly, for sure it will move WNW again most of the time due to the current so no chase for you guys in US ehehehe...
disturbing isn't it? don't you think it is a effect of global warming? i think this series of events is just the beginning... PAGASA predicts that next year, pacific will double its production rate with confidence of 65%... crazy? yes... as for chasers like me, james, and the rest of the asian chasers we would enjoy it...
@JC - i forgot to say you're correct again... recent forecast models shows that jangmi will go again NE to japan then alaska and if it can hold its strength while on cold waters, back to NW pacific... as for the 99W it moves west slowly... straight to mindanao...hopefully it moves NW straight to metro manila as to that is my current location due to a family gathering
anyway, looks like my prayers are being answered LOL!
@ CB.. Thanks for your kind and educated comments. You understand and evidently seem to know your meteorology and the important oceanic ingredients that make predicting severe or related events. In the US though.. Its the meso possibles that we have that are really the root of these LPA's.. Oh yah... The waves that they bring in.. I will keep monitoring your area as it has been really exciting to watch, landfall, and continuance of such.
James.. Hope you are safe in Taiwan... By your site comments, guess you got kind of stuck south of the landfall center... By the SAT view of Jangmi.. The eye just "fizzled" in definition prior to landfall.. That was pretty unexpected as to the strong eyewall present for the prior 24 hours.. Also the north trend of this typhoon in the last stages.. Thats really cool that the Phillipine TPS has your site on their home page.
I am now going to tune in on the ocean front.. Going to put a few surfboards in my car... and gets some hydro-aqua-spinners.. if you catch my drift.. Cheers to all of you..
I just got an email from James and he's positioning further north as the recurve happens.. Out of control!
Reed.. Great news.. Looking forward to his footage.. Looks like the ocean went abolutely beserk prior to landfall... Vicious act of nature mate..
Incredible satellite image! Wow.
Cheers... Good one James !!! The waves in the vid are INSANE !!! Oceanic Supremo... OMG...
Here's is the latest James Reynolds video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s9AUB36t2A
Incredible wave footage!!!!!!
yahaa!!! 99W LPA is nearing its cyclonic formation and moving WNW... just a few more NW movement and it will go straight to my location yahoo!!! 3 cyclone madness in one month!!!... how's the atlantic?...let's see... an active LPA expected to hit again new york and near states and moving @ WNW direction... pretty good but not enough heat to fuel the cyclone because of its location... TOO MUCH NORTH = cold waters... too bad... LOL!!!
as for 99W, i will monitor its movement... should it move according to my "to chase" requirements, i will chase it with video stream... that is if our power provider won't cut the electricity... if not, just a simple video will do...
