Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba!

A textbook tornadic supercell has developed over Southwest Manitoba this evening, with very strong rotation indicated on Minot, ND radar.  I've been nowcasting for Rob MacDonald and Justin H, who are currently tracking the storm.  Rob is reporting a potential rain-wrapped tornado or very large wall cloud on this storm, and a very brief touchdown earlier.  This storm is moving in an increasingly favorable environment for tornadoes, so I would not be surprised it it continues to produce.  Stay tuned for updates...I'll have Stream 1's video from Hurricane Dolly up in a few hours.

I just got off the phone with Rob and he's reporting a large tornado on the ground with this storm. He's only about 1/2 mile east of it at this time!!

Rob and Justin both witnessed the tornado... Rob said it just lifted and they were extremely close. Several vortices at the same time very close to his vehicle. He said they got good video so we'll have it up soon

I'm in Boissevain, MB. Do you think we'll see any tornadoes this way?

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Heidi | July 23, 2008 @ 6:54 PM #

Wendy, you need to think about seeking shelter if you live in Boissevain. The tornadic storm is very close to you at this time; you can probably see the cell if you look to the west. ... It's a little hard to tell from the radar we're using, but it might be north of you. But nevertheless, you should definitely stay alert!

andrewmn.... Ummm.. Ok...

Damn, I missed another chase because of a customer taking forever.

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By andrewmn | July 23, 2008 @ 6:58 PM #

Strike,

I had an opportunity to actually go up there today. That's why.

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Heidi | July 23, 2008 @ 7:00 PM #

Strike, Andrew is slightly distressed because he was going to chase this set-up. ;-) See the nowcasting thread for more info! =D

You may still have time to get out there!

Nasty looking hail with this storm on GRLevel3 as well. The tornado warned cell is north of Boissevain by a bit but there's now rotation showing up in the southern cell.

I added all the MB places to GRL3 Heidi, found the file online and added a few/Corrected locations to GPS 3m res. If that's what you use I'd be happy to send you the file.

Rob is leaving the northern cell and dropping south to the southern one. It is getting its act together fast

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Heidi | July 23, 2008 @ 7:09 PM #

Tim, that would be great. You can PM me on the forum!

Southern cell just started turning right.

Anyone looked at latest models for that area? Is it possibly going to last another hour or so? If it looks good enough, I'll go.

Tornado warning for
R.M. Of Pipestone including Pipestone and Oak Lake reserve continued

A tornado has been reported on the ground between the town of Pipestone and Virden. This storm is tracking east at 30 km/h. Communities of scarth, algar as well as Oak Lake Provincial Park, including Oak Lake beach, are in the storms immediate path.

Was that their report, or somebody else maybe?

Strike, I don't know how far you are from these storms i.e if you could get there in time, but Reed just said that they'll be encountering more favorable shear as they move east, and that he wouldn't be surprised if the southern cell became a tornado-producing machine. Your call! =-O

In brandon, MB, whats the outlook for here?

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Strike | July 23, 2008 @ 7:24 PM #

Heidi, I'm in Winnipeg. Those cells are about a 2 hour drive from here, but they are travelling towards me, so i would probably intercept in an hour and a bit.

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Reed | July 23, 2008 @ 7:42 PM #

You should be clear in Brandon at least for the near term. The northern cell has completely evaporated due to cloud seeding... and the southern is trying to take over but is being negatively influenced by some tiny cells slamming into it. All the action will be well south of Brandon for the next few hours or so..

Rob just called and is reporting a very low lowering/wall cloud with the southern cell - with lots of rain everywhere. There is rotation but not tornadic quite yet.. it probably needs to recover from those little cells.

Wait a minute Reed... cloud seeding? I didn't realize they were doing that much...

Let's just say I don't really like the whole idea.

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Reed | July 23, 2008 @ 8:05 PM #

nooo just the anvil of the southern storm seeding the cell to the north with ice crystals. Although a relatively similar process, just not artificial and much more effective!

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By sk | July 23, 2008 @ 8:11 PM #

That cell to the South-West of the old tornadic storm appears to have strong rotation on RADAR. Please Environment Canada, warn that storm!

It is nice to be able to use NEXRAD Minot for this!

Well, I'm glad I didn't go. Would never have made it in time. I fear that I am running out of chances for this summer.

I too was wondering about the cloud seeding thing. Explains alot.

Supercell with tornado potential in Manitoba! Comment Posted By Connor | July 23, 2008 @ 8:15 PM #

Haha ok thanks Reed. I thought that was what was really going on, but when you said cloud seeding it threw me a little. I know they have experimented with artificial cloud seeding...

I'm in Boissevain, MB and it just started raining pretty hard and it is thunder & lightning. The following warning is posted on EC and just wondering if anyone has seen anything close by us.

The most southernly cell that started just SW of the town of Goodlands came with VERY little warning. One minute everything was very calm, thinking that the forming storm was dissipating, and the next it dropped 3/4 of an inch of rain in about 5 minutes. Wind speeds would have been in excess of 60-70 MPH with rain being shot in all directions. The wind may have had some rotation to it, definatey had varying directions. I kept my eyes on the storm as it left but failed to see anything except for rain. The most intense part of the storm seemed to only be a couple miles long at the most. Just curious, could a cloud like this create a "microburst" or "downburst"?
