Another day of active weather is ahead, this time for the Deep South. There has already been a tornado report with damage in Tupelo MS. More warnings and extended watches are likely for North Mississippi and North-Central Alabama. In fact, SPC issued a 10% hatched area for tornadoes:

I am not surprised by the forecast considering instability should increase before the main forcing moves into Alabama. A tornado watch is in effect through 2 pm today:

Biggest threat today will be supercells developing ahead of squall line. The environment is prime. Dewpoints in the mid 60s, temps rising into the 80s, 850 mb flow 50 kts, no CIN. Here is the RUC analysis from SPC of the curent 0-1 km storm relative helicity. This is the measure for the potential aid in updraft rotation:

Reed should have more updates later. I should be out chasing this event, but I am down in Mobile monitoring any severe potential for our inland counties.

Brandy Arnold...I know you said you live somewhere in NE Alabama. Any tornado warnings for your area yet?

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By Michael O | May 8, 2008 @ 4:07 PM #

Just talked to Michael Carlson he is closing in on the tornado warned sup SW of Scott City, KS. Very nice hook and couplet on radar. He is reporting a VERY large wall cloud and incredible structure. More info later.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!! Everyone should go check out the radar from Goodland, KS. The cells there are amazing.

Anyone notice the tornado warning in Ohio for southeastern Greene county? And it says the storm is moving north at 12 mph. Isn't that a bit unusual? Ohio isn't even in the slight risk, and I've never heard of a storm moving that slowly, or north for that matter. Though I don't know very much about storms yet. As usual, just curious for any thoughts/opinions. I saw this warning on the active weather alerts on the NOAA.gov active weather alerts page.

Raven, you have a point. That is strange. But no matter where you are, if you have heavy rain, you can have tornadoes. Nature is unpredictable.

Hey everyone, if you live west of the Triangle in North Carolina, you are under Tornado Watch 282 until 100
AM.

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By Debo | May 9, 2008 @ 7:27 AM #

Hey Raven, just FYI, that storm in Ohio did produce a brief tornado.

Also, anyone seen that surveillance footage from Huntsville, AL?!?! Shows a parking lot with some cars, then a tornado blasts through and throws an old pickup truck up in the air and flips it. It also rolled over another car next to the truck. It was incredible!!

Definitely a VERY fast-moving tornado

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By Cors | May 9, 2008 @ 10:49 AM #

That is incredible Volker!

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By You don't need to know | May 9, 2008 @ 11:47 AM #

Volker..... WOW! Did you notice the tornado was already somewhat past the vehicles when they were tossed into the air? It was almost like the effect from a flyby of a supersonic aircraft!

If that was bearing down on someone, THAT would DEFINATELY be a "boakyag" moment!

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By Volker | May 9, 2008 @ 12:49 PM #

I haven't seen such a speeding force before. These fast-movers seem to be very very dangerous.
But, look at that. That's a stormchasers way to cool down warm ice tea: http://www.meteomedia.ch/usa08/20080508/20080508.html

I've had a vista laptop for about a year now, and wanted to get some mobile internet for it. Yet there seems to be a problem with the aircard software compatability. Has anyone had this issue? The ones I tried were vista "compatible" supposedly. Yet the tech guys were stumped.

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By boberto | May 9, 2008 @ 6:47 PM #

biggest storm i have seen in a long time in nebraska

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By Strike | May 9, 2008 @ 7:38 PM #

That video of the parking lot was insane.

I see "cars overturned" in reports all the time and its pretty much meaningless. Not so much now.

Tornado Threat for N. Alabama Comment Posted By chadmak09 | May 11, 2008 @ 8:50 AM #

Hi,
I live in Huntsville Al and a tornado footage junkie. Not so much a scientist but love learning about tornados and watching Reed and Joels footage.
I was wondering, has anything like the parking lot camera footage of the cars flying been recorded before (other than the Pampa texas video)??
I plan on going on a chase next year if everything works out right. If I would have been on the chase yesterday I am sure it would have took me right to my own backyard. I spent some time last night hunkered down in my kitchen under pillows with my dog becasue of tornado warnings. The wierd thing is our local weatherman (dan satterfield) had said it looks like we might be in the clear for a little while but within about 1 minute my TV screen went red and "Tornado Warning " poped up. I then checked the storm track and the possible tornado was headed directly on top of me. Goes to show everyone just how fast these things can develope with such instability in the atmosphere. I would have went outside to see if I could spot anything but when its dark outside I dont play that lol.
Anyway, i love this site and hope to chase with you guys next year!
happy Tornado hunting.
Chad M. From Huntsville alabama

Yep, Looks like another good day for large hail...

Maybe some late night activity though... Reed..

You guys Chasin at home base? We need some good discrete isolated rotators Like last years ... Got some great footage of the Reno Co Kansas... Really enjoy your footage of Ok and Ca... You are crazy mate. I had on of the encounter in R.Co within 30 meters... Only an f-0... but Whah !

Hope we get some good cold front activity with a strong moist southerly flow soon...

Mr. T
