was looking forward to seeing this footage this morning!...congrats on some sucessful chases! hopefully the people in protection, ks are alright.
Well worth the wait. Congrats guys
Video by Doug Kiesling of the wedge north of Quinter .....almost got him.
http://www.lightningboy.net/content/052308bnvnquniterkstornadorawflv
Stream 3 was streaming the Quinter tornado live... Did anyone see that as it was occurring??
We streamed several ground-scraping wall clouds with vortices occasionally touching the ground, but lost data as the rope was touching down.
Reed,
I do believe some people saw the stream in question as I recall Ari said something about a huge tornado being streamed I want to say around 5-6 pmish on the previous blog. I know that I missed it unfortunately....ahhh the life of being an adult
WOW! Good stuff you guys! That 2nd video had some erie wind sounds! And, the sideways rope tornado in the 3rd video - very cool!!! I've not seen one like that before. Seems as if it was a good chase day. I hope all those who had damage are okay. Need to check on Protection, KS.
Wow very awesome stuff. Love that wedge one. That Lane Co one was nuts! Very odd tornado.
PS: You're missing TVN stream #2 video.
WOW! What a crazy looking sideways tornado. Great job as always. Too bad there were no roads to get you closer!!
Reed, stream 3 quit on me just as the tornado became visible, but that could have been my problem here on my computer. It was a great stream though while it lasted.
Seems like anything gets on the ground and data goes completely to heck.
I have a lot better luck with Firefox than IE.
i didnt see the quinter tornado on here cuz of bugs but did see it on ss website
nice job all of you guys wit video
Damn, great vids!
The streams works perfect with safari 3. Great videos reed hope those people are okay!
Hey comrades..
Almost to Holdridge NE... Noticed there is a TW in N OK...
Going to be on the us 34 E... Looks like some cumuli out there.. Good low level sse wind.. I see tvn3 in the vicinity.. will be checkin in on the situation in Hastings NE.. Hope for some action later..
jc
Hey Jason F, I saw the video. Crazy. Were those sparks flying out from under his vehicle?
Yeah really weird how our data dies whenever the tornado is coming down...very frustrating. I wonder if it's some kind of weird interference with the storm since we're usually underneath the circulations.
We're working on a partnership with the flash streaming company to come up with a dominating solution. Wait until you see this thing..
It's just hard to manage everything while chasing non-stop, feeding and editing video all night...replacing wind shields.. and compiling video from 5 streams. Have patience...the grass will soon become milk
Stream 1 had some connectivity issues, but it's all figured out now. We're trying to get all streams hooked up with Alltel data cards
today will be a lot better for streaming..
I couldn't get the streams working yesterday. Any of them. Was using firefox and IE7. But I saw 3 tornado's yesterday over on the severe studios streams though. Two wedges, incredable!
Reed, are you not allow to show your best fotage due to rules with the discovery channel? I'm just wondering. And I can't wait to see Storm Chasers next fall! Are you actually going to be part of the show or are they just using your footage?
Ari,
I think you maybe right those looked like sparks. I give doug props for getting close thankfully he looked over and found the wedge coming at him. Not sure if he chases alone but if he does maybe he should have company.
Oh and if anyone questions the TVN vs SS i think they may want to look at both sites for the video that shows the car that went into the ditch. SS was in front of TVN and both caught the car going into the ditch. To me that shows both groups get along quite well chasing storms.
Ya, JasonF. Dougs video was incredible. "I am about to get hit by a fu..ing wedge." –most awesome line ever. Did you see the top of the powerpole just snap? And the power lines hit his car. A very dangerous situation, but awesome footage.
Reed, I am sure you will figure the streaming thing out eventually. The guys over at SS said it’s due to the flash player – bogs the system down. But I know you guys can get it working! It seems you are a very busy man right now! Keep up the good work!
That was a pretty awesome line for sure.

wow this is some great cinema on news 9!!!
Aw man, you guys got a raw deal. You're in Kansas while most of the action (multi-vortex tornado) is in Oklahoma.
that tornado is huge wedge that is wrapped in rain west of marshall ok
live coverage is incredible http://www.news9.com/global/video/popup/pop_player.asp?vt1=l&d1=0&ClipId1=mms%3A//a1420.l4265535419.c42655.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1420/42655/v0001/reflector%3A35419&LiveURI=mms%3A//a1420.l4265535419.c42655.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1420/42655/v0001/reflector%3A35419&h1=Severe Weather&at1=University%20-%20Admissions&LiveURITitle=Severe%20Weather&LaunchPageAdTag=University - Admissions&fvCatNo=undefined&playerVersion=1&hostPageUrl=http%3A//www.kwtv.com/&rnd=32565525

I see a 3-day outbreak blog in the works... ;) Nice job everyone!
Great work guys! Glad to see your all safe too!
Bust.
Can't win 'em all guys. 2 out of 3 ain't bad :)
COngrats by the way to Dick and Darin.
Heidi can no longer call you the shelf could kings.
Er... that was supposed to say "shelf-CLOUD kings"
Sorry :)
Beautiful footage guys! Keep up the hard work. This time it paid off big time!
The motion in the storm that was being covered live on CNN was just incredible! The whole storm had motion! Boy, what a three day period...
I know it is a little early, but has anyone heard about the EF ratings for some of these tornados over the last couple of days?
Oh yes I can. :P
The big wedge from Weld Co. Colorado is, preliminarily, an EF-2, EF-3. I don't know about any others yet. It will probably take a while for the KS ones, since there were so many Thursday & Friday.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/crnews/display_story.php?wfo=bou&storyid=14849&source=0
LOL@Heidi. Apparently Dick only goes after the big EF4s and EF5s, he leaves the little trash to everyone else while he shoots shelfs and well-sculpted breathtaking updraft-bases.
The Quinter wedge has been rated EF4, based on the damage from it hitting just 2 homes. It threw cars 200 yards. D'OH! No one was killed, either, a miracle I can still hardly believe.
Eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota are in a tornado watch. Tornado warning in effect near Lisbon, ND.
Here's a link to the tornado surveys from the Goodland, KS office:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/gld/?n=/may23pns
It's a real good thing that most of the rest of those tornados didn't hit anything.
Thank you Heidi... You always come through.
Just a quick post that I finally get to see my first thunderstorm of the year when i'm not even at home haha.
Much too exciting...
Keep your eyes open Andrew! New MD posted over ya!

I'm thinking Eau Claire tomorrow!
I just went out to put my lawnmower away, a lightning bolt hit about 100 yards away. Hadn't even heard any thunder to that point.
Changing my shorts...
These storms are gonna vanish as soon as they reach the lake!! You can see it on GR3!
It will eat them like the giant, storm killing refrigerator it is.
Lightning bolt! I just got another lightning bolt!
Sorry folks, we are seriously starved here in MN for any type of convection, provided it is the NON-FROZEN type.
I think we'll get our wish tomorrow.
Reed, or any of the TVN chasers, is anyone from the crew coming up here tomorrow or have you guys had enough fun for a few days?
All I can say is, anyone trying to chase in southeast MN or along the Mississippi into west central Wisconsin has my deepest respect.
I"m not sure if anyone heard but one of the twisters in Platt county KS on Friday threw a car 450 ft or so and it was a double fatality
I meant Pratt not platt. Oops
Now NOAA is saying the best tornado potential Up here will be NW Wisconsin. Hmm... Anyway, I'm planning on enter this hatched 10% tornado risk later!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
Today from border to border there will be severe.Along dryline and cold front from texas to wisconsin.Ample cape destabiliztion with strong deep layer shear for supercells till central texas high level jet and sufficant vorticity 01 km shear for tornados just about anywhere.Strong tornados over kansas to wisconsin.
Right now isolated stroms with hail wind developing within warm advection regime. They will die out as low level jet weakens.Later afternoon supercells are likely from texas to wisconsin 2,000 to 4,500 cape is going to meat with 55kt vertical shear and lapse rates for very dmaging hail from border to border.Along with tornados because of strong 01km shear suportive of isolated tornados.Best threat from kansas to wisconsin where strongest winds aloft are and surface low track is closer and low level vorticity with backing winds.Tornado outbreak likely in those reas.Later tonight widespread wind dmage due to 1,000 to 2,000 cape winds streaing it aloft and low level jet along th cold front giving derecho event.Storms firing from early to mid late afternoon further south.
Tirnado watch likely may be pds by early to mid eearly afternoon minnestota to wisconsin as warm front moves north carrying moist and unstable environement with clouds burning off and lrge scale forcing for ascent moving in tornadic suupercells are likely with favorable shear and 2,000 to 3,000 cape located under 8 yo 8.5 mid lapse rates.
I will be departing Duluth soon and heading south down good 'ol I-35. I think I'm gonna head towards AndrewMN's area North of the cities and play it from there! Even frickin Dtown here is under the Hatched area! With a lil luck we can get a tube to roll down the basin and head out to the lake! Never in history has it happened before!!
Oh and for everyones info... I now have tools here so watch your posts or it WILL be your last here!! I am absolutely sick of seeing people trying to bring this blog down. Reed and crew deserve better and that's what there gonna get! And to those who do it right here, I thank you all for making this such a great place to interact!!!
Brady you should be able to get tornados if you are anywhere from oklahoma to wisconsin cape and shear are both supportive of tornadic supercells severe descrete ones pottentialy strong tornados.Later severeal mcs develop with widespread 60 to 85mph winds and hail.Good chase brady!
Good luck Brady! Find us a tube!
Good luck Brady! Hope you can get a tornado!
Around 5AM here we had another round of thunderstorms. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because my outdoor temperature sensor got struck by lightning, and now only wants to read 155.0 degrees (same readout whether i switch it to Celsius or Fahrenheit mode). O well, at least it died in a funny way to me! :P
Holy crap guys. Good work is an understatement.
Good luck today Brady!
We're playing the southern target in Kansas..
Incridible footage guys! You're all dominating!
Alright, SOMEONE is gonna see SOMETHING today, guaranteed. TWO, not one but TWO moderate risk areas today!
