Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK!

All of the ingredients will be in place for a major tornado outbreak today across western Kansas and Oklahoma, with incredible low-level wind shear and instability.  Today is by far the most favorable setup for strong tornadoes since early May last year at the very least!  Residents in Western Kansas and Oklahoma should keep a VERY close eye on local media this afternoon and evening, as this could be a very dangerous situation.  The RUC forecast 850 mb flow and CAPE for 00z this evening are ridiculous:

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk for this region, but this could easily be upgraded to a high risk given the extensive storm coverage forecast by all models.  Be sure to check out the Live Tracker today, since we'll have 4 veteran storm chasers streaming live to the website.  Jason just implemented a more efficient streaming system as well, so many of the problems we've experienced with the beta version have been resolved.  Stay tuned for more updates as this dangerous weather situation evolves..

Looks awesome today! The SPC is really downplaying any prospects of tornadic storms around central OK...with good CAPE and helicities it's hard to see why...good luck to all!

What happened to the map that used to accompany the live chase tracker streaming video? I hope that you will still be using it as I really like knowing where you guys are because you are usually right on point to where the tornados are! Please put the map back on the tracker!

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By JM | May 22, 2008 @ 12:18 PM #

Is anyone else having a problem with the live stream? It is not working for me, period.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By JoeySipos | May 22, 2008 @ 12:19 PM #

Amy, I think they took down the tracker map because it was causing the streams to leg. I do wish they had a tracker icon on GRLevel3 radar though. Like all the other chasers. but they don't show up?
I can't wait to see the new streaming technique! I hope it's smooth. And if it had sound! That would be incredible! Reed I remember you had sound at one point. You should do that again. It makes the video 100 times better to watch

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Khristopher | May 22, 2008 @ 12:21 PM #

The live tracker page is broken in IE8.
You can only see the one video. That's the Tornadovideos.net one.
The other 4 below that and the map do not show up at all in IE8.
All show up fine in Firefox however.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By joeysipos | May 22, 2008 @ 12:35 PM #

Oh ya, Everything is working in firefox - even the tracker. IE 9 or 10 (the newest one) does not work as well.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Munsie | May 22, 2008 @ 12:39 PM #

Only 1 stream, no radar in IE7. Firefox shows all 5 streams plus the radar.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By joeysipos | May 22, 2008 @ 12:55 PM #

Oh, ya. IE 7 is the newest one. Was getting confused with windows media player lol.

I kind of like it like this, have a really smooth stream of TVN in IE. Have a chopier version of more streams plus tracker on firefox (-its sort of choppy on my computer via firefox).

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Vincent | May 22, 2008 @ 1:51 PM #

I have one issue with the tracker. Whenever the tracker updates with your latest fix the map zooms out and repositions to another TVN team. Quite annoying when I'm trying to follow one team in KS then all of a sudden I'm over in OK and I have pan back over and zoom in. That is my only issue and everything else works. Great job so far on the tracker.

For those that dont have firefox Reed and the boys are heading south towards Garden City. Heading towards a storms that looks like it might get tornado warned shortly

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By alberto | May 22, 2008 @ 3:48 PM #

Killer tornado threat best from late afternoon into evening when low level 60kt jet will intersect deepening surface low and moisture is in place and jet stream over top the area. Reminds me of last years greensburg kansas tornado in the evening now the low level jet not that strong but still the warm front is very strong and will support tornados/some strong. I do think we should see at least one ef5 tornado given 400m2/s2 helicty and 3,000 to 4,000 cape i just saw.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Munsie | May 22, 2008 @ 3:57 PM #

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By alberto | May 22, 2008 @ 4:00 PM #

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Munsie | May 22, 2008 @ 4:09 PM #

same here, actually the streaming from TVN has been very hit and miss. errr...

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Matt | May 22, 2008 @ 4:13 PM #

SN reported a wall cloud of the same storm that Reed and the boys are on near Garden City. So I would expect a tornado warning shortly for that area.

Im seeing Stream 1 and 3 and TVN is hit and miss most the time.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Munsie | May 22, 2008 @ 4:18 PM #

I think the reason the IE page is not working accurately, is there is an error in the html editing of the page. When I looked at the source, there is a missing closing "object" tag after the first embed video. It appears Firefox is more fogiving.

Also, would be great to select which video to watch (on sep pages), even with them all stopped there is still streaming??

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Jason W | May 22, 2008 @ 4:19 PM #

I have yet to get any of the new streams to work. I downloaded Firefox and still nothing. It says "connectionerror" every time it tries to load. I would rather watch these streams than the severe studios streams......but theirs work for me. Any suggestions would be great!!

We had tornadoes stike down in the Denver CO area which is only about an hour or so from where I live. I really wish I knew more about this stuff so I could have been there to see it.. I will try and find some links to post on here for anyone that might want to see it.

Tornado threat increaing as low level jet is increaing through late afternoon also note the jet stream is strong from south westerly. )1km shear now 300 and will increase and effective helicty is supportive of large strong tornados every cell should at leasdt roatate in lower levels and strong tornados likely as low deepens per atm now. Potentially killer tornado decatuer county kansas

TVN rocks, but they need to spend some r&d money and design a better streaming implementation. I realize it's beta, but there is technology available already that should do the job better. I logged onto another site today for the first time and had a 90% up time on their streams, and witnessed 2 realtime tornados..on the ground.

WOW...the storm we were on went nuts just south of I-70... we saw 3 tornadoes... one very photogenic but small/weak tornado, a low-contrast cone, and a massive ground-scraping wall cloud circulation that ripped a roof off a barn.

I try and get some video up tonight, but we'll be preparing for tomorrow.. AAAAAAAAAAa

We'll continue working out the streaming bugs..

Hey Alberto its not "greensburg kansas county"its Kiowa county. The hail and tornado as far as I know are east of Greensburg. I have family there, and it should be clear that they are NOT in harms way of any kind nor where they when the tornado warning was in effect. At this time the storm is fizzling out anyway. Looks like it even went east of Haviland!

Great, Alberto is going to be updating us all day tomorrow. Great news! - Not!

Alberto, please try to limit your comments. Reed asked you to stop. please stop.

Man, I saw countless funnel clouds and a couple tornadoes today on the streams. One beautiful one by Matt. I was watching the severstudios streams as well. And Reed, did you guys go through a really low wall cloud at one point. Almost looked that way on cam.

Also, Reed.. I had a hard time getting the streams while I was researching for todays chase. Did not know you were in the same zone until you posted.

Definitely the place to be today. Looking forward to seeing your video.

Is Saturday going to be good for chasing at all? It seems like SPC is saying nothing will be worth chasing. Its one of my few weekends I would be able to chase, but don't think i could afford going into central KS and OK.

I'm predicting a Category 5 Hurricane will come out of nowhere and hit somewhere in the middle of Kansas. It'll be unprecedented.

Seriously, Alberto reminds me of some of these folks on The Weather Underground every Hurricane season. Whenever a cloud forms in the Atlantic, they're instantly predicting in the message thread Category 5's and/or 250 km/hr winds and/or predicting the track of predicted storm will instantly destroy a major American city/small Caribbean island, etc etc etc.

Maybe this message board needs a rating system so that spammers posts get troll-rated and don't show up, like they do on some of the political blogs.

I just saw for about 30 seconds on CTV news on the Colorado tornadoes, the one was that 400 m wide.. and they showed a picture..

I just saw footage of the colorado tornado on the news. Unbelievable, they said it was 1.6 km wide (1 mile) and it looked it. Like something from a movie. Didn't seem to do too much damage though.

Actually, alberto is not affiliated with SevereStudios in any way. I banned him from our chat room because of his unruly behavior and his false information. Here's a hint, he uses Verizon FIOS in New York.

Thanks for remembering my name though! Makes me feel better people can remember my name after not even a full season of chasing outside of Michigan. I must be doing something right.

Also, I don't know where you get the idea that we're trying to sell streams to TV stations. We follow the same procedure everytime - If a TV station contacts us wishing to license a feed, we contact the streamer. We have even added a way for the streamer to put their own licensing information on our cam page.

If you have a problem with us personally, or would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me or Kory directly. Our contact information, including e-mails and phone numbers are on the page.

Also, on a side note, I am actually somewhat of a fan of this site and watched some of the streams yesterday when I had a chance. I don't understand where all this ill will towards myself or our site came from. Why don't we all get back to enjoying mother nature at her most violent? I'm looking forward to chasing this weekend, and was really jealous yesterday that I was stuck at work instead of out in Kansas.

TVN great info, agree you really need to work on streaming. Perhaps fewer streams till bugs are out. SStudios is a good site as well, don't see the reason for those posting to have anamosity. If Reed and SS have a problem, suspect he would let us know. Now Alberto, he needs help. Perhaps some english as a second language lessons and a a strong antipsych drug. Can we say 'delusions of importance'!?!

I hear a few things about CAPE....what is it?

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By alberto | May 23, 2008 @ 8:08 AM #

Cape is the available potential energy for thunderstrom the hgiher it is the better for intense stroms. When you get this combo with shear tornados will happen. The spc said about upgrade to high risk is possible for kansas and nebraska. Also if anything develops south in oklahoma texas they will produce big hail and tornados.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Ari | May 23, 2008 @ 8:25 AM #

Everyone is right, streaming sucks. Running Safari 3.1.1 on Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on other Mac. As Munsie said, very hit or miss. Still, big day for tornadoes yesterday, hope chasers are alright (I know you guys are, can't hurt to ask), gear up for today. Also, alberto, YOUR SPAMMING SUCKS.

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Alberto | May 23, 2008 @ 8:42 AM #

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Ari | May 23, 2008 @ 8:46 AM #

Alberto, will you provide a link as to where you found these CAPE charts? Because I've been scanning the NWS website and can't find a thing. Also, just because the real outbreak won't happen until mid afternoon doesn't mean they can't issue the watch now!

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By Alberto | May 23, 2008 @ 8:52 AM #

Mucape effective bi=ulk shear over there multi barometer fields also you can get cap on the computer models if you want. You can't issue tornado watch because the region is capped to surface based parcels right now and increasing all the stroms should diminish now as low lefel jet weakens within the hour. The tornado outbreak will start mid/late afternoon!

Hey Alberto-tino.. I am going to make a fun game for you. This is fun.. For every mis-spelled word that you type, or anytime the grammar you use is in the second grade level on this sight, you take a quarter and send it to Reed and Co.. Trust me pal, after about two weeks, they are going to be able to buy 16 more cars and more video equipment than Best Buy.

By the way, WTF is the low lefel jet or bi=ulk shear? I googled these terms and nothing came up. Are you making new terms up or are you just retarded...

Looks REALLY GOOD for again for us here in west Kansas. I would expect that we will again get upgraded to HIGH RISK... Either way... I am rested and ready for another long aft/eve... Be safe all of you out here!

Its so funny to be out here and see tornadoes reported in So Cal.. They had hail, high winds, yes... tornadoes.. I thought we only had great surf, awesome weather, and of course.. th OC life...

Really stoked to be here till next week! Just love it when we have this stuff going on in the plains.

5-23.. Chillin in Oakley KS this AM. Here we go again.

High risk is a possibility for today. Again storm speeds are going to be a concern (40+mph n-ward movement), but since people had a chance to figure out how to be positioned yesterday, people up there will get a better idea where to set up today..

Major tornado outbreak likely across western KS/OK! Comment Posted By COACHWHIP | May 23, 2008 @ 9:08 AM #

Alberto.

You are really close to getting banned from this site. Nobody wants to do that, but if you don't change your behavior pattern, it will.

Here are a few ways in which YOU can prevent yourself from being banned:

1. STOP POSTING SO OFTEN. You've posted 8 times already today. There is no need for that.

2. POST SOME LINKS when you have "information" to share. You must be getting your "confirmed" information from some source, so let the rest of us know what that is. You'll gain some credibility that way. Otherwise, you come across like a SENSATIONALIST. That's why people are calling you a SPAMMER.

3. STOP predicting "EF-4-EF-5 tornados" every day.

We're really a very accepting bunch, so please just try your very best to follow those "guidelines" and everything should be fine.

Finally, and this goes for everyone:

STOP trying to stir up SevereStudios vs. TVN controversy/animosity. Reed & Crew have no problems with them, so there's no reason for anyone to try to cause one. This isn't a "Twister" storyline with "good guys vs bad guys."

Let's get back to the real shizznit, and start preparing for re-deployment today.

to the Coach.. Hell of a pep talk.. I got the eye's greased and ready to play..

My thing about the TVN/SVR Studios is that both site provide people like me that get stuck at frickin work a chance to armchair chase. All I have to worry about is making sure I don't burn the popcorn and take bathroom breaks every hour, unless you are Joel and just do it off the side of the road.

I may be a sucker for believing Aberto, but I've noticed a different user or users attempting to make fun of Alberto by posting ridiculous EF4 or EF5 predictions.

Alberto needs to post links to his information, but he usually gives a lot of details(correct or not is up for debate).....which is absent in the "alberta" and "alberto" users postings...which is normally just a stupid EF5 tornado prediction.

With that said, Alberto needs to listen to Reed. He posts way to much and in my opinion, he causes more distractions with people making fun of him with similar user names. You need to check your spelling and grammar as well. I'm not perfect...not even close but I can't even understand your posts some times.

Just cool it off a little bit and you'll be fine.
