A major tornado outbreak involving many southern states is occurring at this time. There are 51+ reports at this time... and expected to rise.

Reed has informed me that they have been in the town of Enterprise, MS, where a damaging F2+ tornado ripped through town. They were one of the first on the scene, and have been assisting in the rescue effort, thankfully reporting no injuries at this moment.

Stay tuned for updates as they come in.

I've also been told that a tornadic supercell is coming into the Enterprise area ATTM. Hopefully we do not see any further destruction in the area.

Gosh. Not good. What a day it has been!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Heidi | May 2, 2008 @ 9:53 PM #

Wait; Enterprise MS? ... Is that a typo or something? I don't see any storms at all in that area? Now I am confused! :-/

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Dave Holder | May 2, 2008 @ 10:15 PM #

I might have misunderstood what he said about a tornadic supercell is on the way. I don't see anything heading that way either... my apologies

tornadoes are fascinating and cool, but it sucks that they are "life-threatening"

anybody else agree with me???

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Cory | May 2, 2008 @ 10:26 PM #

Absolutely Paul. I think we can all agree on that...

WHOA!!! Enterprise MS. got hit??? Now THAT'S eerie!

1 year, 2 months, 1 day...

Remind me never to move to ANY town named "enterprise"...

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Heidi | May 2, 2008 @ 10:28 PM #

I wonder if there are two towns named Enterprise in Mississippi. The one I can find on a map is in Clarke Co, near Meridian, way over on the AL border. I don't think there have been any storms over there at all today. That's why I am so confused about all of this. I know there are two towns named Salem in Arkansas, so I am guessing that it's possible the same thing could happen in MS. Try to find out what county it's in, if you can Dave.

I can't believe we did not chase in east AR today. Everyone and their brother saw multiple tornados. I, on the other hand, have achieved phail. :-{

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By You don't need to know | May 2, 2008 @ 10:37 PM #

PLEASE don't let it be the same Enterprise that got hit last year...

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Alex24 | May 2, 2008 @ 10:50 PM #

No, that was Enterprise, Alabama that got hit last year in March with an EF4. This Enterprise is in Mississippi.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Dave Holder | May 2, 2008 @ 10:53 PM #

Heidi, I'm also a little confused... I believe there is only 1 Enterprise, MS.

I'll update as soon as I can.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Alex24 | May 2, 2008 @ 11:00 PM #

I find it strange that Reed and the crew are in Enterprise, MS considering that there haven't been any storms there all day and there are none that are heading right toward it. Perhaps it was a typo or there is another Enterprise somewhere in MS, which is doubtful.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By DJ | May 2, 2008 @ 11:08 PM #

I never realized how destructive they could be until I drove through Jarrell, Texas in 1997 and saw for myself.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Justine | May 2, 2008 @ 11:44 PM #

It was great meeting everyone!! Hope to see yall again soon! Be safe!!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By reed | May 2, 2008 @ 11:48 PM #

enterprise, MS sustained major damage from a strong tornado shortly after 5 pm. Vthey were almost hit by a second tornado from the next supercell. It is a bad situation there. We helped out for two hours clearing roads so em could get to the destroyed houses. Mass chaos. Don saw a violent wedge NW of memphis also. Major da issues today...I think I forgot to pay my alltel bill!

this has been an incredible day no doubt- from the radar images and confirmations of tornados and then just i dont know what to say except wow- you know its really earie that the way the arkansas tornado reports lined up like they did on april and 4th http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lzk/html/rain0408a.htm (you'll need to scroll down to see where the surveys are) but on a different note everything is going good here in california- so y'all take it easy

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Donny | May 3, 2008 @ 12:07 AM #

Still happening around Greenwood and Grenada Mississippi as tornadoes on the ground. Looks like an all nighter I can see Bama flaring up around daybreak to 11 am.

The first week of May is always a bad one when it comes to tornado outbreaks!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By tpreitzel | May 3, 2008 @ 2:24 AM #

About noon yesterday, I indicated on the web the possibility that this outbreak would occur. Why? Basically, the contrast between air masses in the West and further East along a boundary extending southward from a low pressure in Iowa. BTW, this evening isn't over. Intense thunderstorms are developing near a low and front forming along the Illinois and Indiana border. BTW, I just registered with this website, www.tornadovideos.net, and I STILL haven't been confirmed to post on the forums. I realize that it's been a busy day. Thanks!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Justin | May 3, 2008 @ 7:56 AM #

Hello all, I'm Justin, this is my first post on here although I do stop by frequently to see what the TVN guys are up to. I thought you all might be interested in some pics from the local paper in Tupelo, MS. I live in Oxford MS, which is only about 20 miles West from where the tornado that hit Enterprise and the New Albany area passed by. They are ameatur shots from the locals but are the first I've seen yet. I'll repost any other local pics or vids I come across or here of.

First week of may is always bad last year the may3 to 6 outbreak. Also today if enough cape develops pennsylvania may get 5 tro 10 tornados where winds will be beacked under lapse rates.Only question is if sun can come out.Great job Reed.At least 5 wedge tornados yesterday!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Joey | May 3, 2008 @ 8:28 AM #

I love tornados and everybody in my class thinks tornados are scary. When I grow up, I want to be a weather man or chase storms. Chaseing storms is so cool. I want think storms are so wonderful. Lighting is to. I have 1 question... If you get out of your car and go in a ditch, will you get sucked up by the tornado or will it just jump over the ditch. Thank you and Tornados are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By joey | May 3, 2008 @ 9:54 AM #

no, i mean stealing my name?

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By TS | May 3, 2008 @ 10:21 AM #

There actually could be 2 Joey's. Maybe one of you could use Joey and your last initial? The more people post, the more likely that some people will have the same name. I know that's stating the obvious.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Reed | May 3, 2008 @ 11:42 AM #

The Enterprise, MS that was hit by the tornado was located on SR 30 between Oxford and New Albany, MS. It's probably a town of only a few hundred or so. According to the fire department, the tornado was on the ground for about 20-30 miles to the county line. I'm currently uploading Don's video from Cross Co, AR and it is insane. Violent large tornado and the base of the wall cloud was ridiculously low.

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Alex24 | May 3, 2008 @ 11:54 AM #

Oh, that makes perfect sense now because there is another town by the name of Enterprise in east central MS, right along the Alabama border. That was the source of the confusion. Yes, I saw some wicked cells move right over that area. They were rotating like beasts all day, can't wait to see that video.

Great Video Reed, found your AR on Fox news just posted.

Sad. This site is still cool but is slowly becoming a forum of childish commentary and posts. Seeing as there is an influx of new posters I guess it's predictable. I have been lurking to read info for my area for over a year and it def has degraded over the past month or two. Alberto may not spell very well but who knows..he could be a kid like Caleb or someone that doesn't speak english as his first language. Sure he posts alot but so what, he shows passion in weather and that is the point of this site. Hey Alberto dude!! You are cool to ignore the jaggoff posters who mock you...don't let 'em get ya down. Keep up the passion and tone down the I told ya so's

Major Outbreak Across the South Comment Posted By Paul MC | May 5, 2008 @ 3:05 AM #

Enterprise is just a community, not a town per se. The major damage was to about 14 houses, 2 churches, a hardware store, a convenience store, and 5 poultry houses. I have some photos of the cleanup from earlier today.
