Massive hail producers, non-zero tornado threat expected today

This morning's model forecasts do not look very favorable for tornadoes across the Southern Plains, and even further northeast into MO.  An unfavorable orientation of the frontal boundary and weak low-level shear are the two main limiting factors for tornadoes today, but extreme CAPE values of 4000+ J/kg will be possible east of the cold front/dryline across OK/TX.  Here is the 12-hr RUC forecast for this evening for CAPE and 850 mb wind:

There is still a possibility that the extreme CAPE values over central OK into Texas can over-compensate for weak low-level shear, so we will still likely be chasing this event.  Even if tornadoes are not a possibility, we would enjoy a core-punch with softball size hail..  Our current target is Duncan to Wichita Falls, TX, but we are also considering a northeast OK target where low-level shear may be able to hang on into the evening.  We'll be streaming this event live so be sure to check the tracker page..  Good luck to all who are chasing this event

Getting a bunch of mini thunderheads going over..since 11:30 it has already hailed 6 times (5xpea sized, once a bit bigger). And not long ago I heard one thunder =)
Other HUGE bonus with that is rain!

Tornado by Heath? My boss lives in Rowlett. Just waiting for NWS to issue warning before I go let him know.

Massive hail producers, non-zero tornado threat expected today Comment Posted By Melissa | May 13, 2008 @ 2:21 PM #

Good luck to everyone chasing today. Hopefully you get some action. They're still forcasting some strong storms for Northern Arkansas again, but we'll see if it makes it here or not.

Massive hail producers, non-zero tornado threat expected today Comment Posted By Reed | May 13, 2008 @ 2:48 PM #

While the 850 mb flow is forecast to be weak, the RUC is predicting 20-30 knot 925 mb flow over most of OK and southeast KS into MO. We're really liking the backed winds over south-central OK, and are soon going to head south on I-35..

We'll start streaming as soon as we leave.

Glad I didn't mention tornado in Heath to my boss. Obviously a false alarm.

Reed, what's your location? It looks like you're headed right down 69 and into my area of KS. It just starting sprinkling outside here and I can tell a definite change in the atmosphere between lunch time and now. I can hardly wait until I get off work at 5:00!! It's killing me!

BETTER CHANCES FOR SEVERE WEATHER WILL EXIST ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE OUTLOOK AREA WHERE RICHER LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE WILL RESIDE. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE THE MAIN
THREAT WITH ANY ACTIVITY MAINLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF AN OLATHE KANSAS
TO CARROLLTON MISSOURI LINE...INCLUDING THE KANSAS CITY METROPOLITAN
AREA. IN ADDITION...SUFFICIENT SHEAR WILL BE IN PLACE FOR AN
ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT ACROSS THIS AREA AS WELL...BUT HAIL AND
STRAIGHT LINE WINDS WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS.

Spotters reported a brief touchdown near Mindenmines.

Anyone else having major lag with the site right now?

Massive hail producers, non-zero tornado threat expected today Comment Posted By crazyhorse | May 13, 2008 @ 9:55 PM #

I,ve been having major lag for days now.

Massive hail producers, non-zero tornado threat expected today Comment Posted By joeysipos | May 14, 2008 @ 12:47 AM #

I've been getting bad lag too. I noticed i don't get lag though when TVN is not using the GPS Tracker - like when there not showing up on the tracker map.

Jason - or who ever is in charge of the web design, can you perhaps change the way we conecct to the stream. I like they way Severe studios does it - They have many options to open the stream.

Kind regards - Joey Sipos

It finally happened! It came right over the top of me (in Pittsburg) and I couldn't even get out to look at it! Ah, the joys of motherhood...I was three blocks away with my son, on foot, walking home a neighborhood girl who showed up on her bicycle, scared at my house. She was riding her bike when it started getting windy and didn't want to go home alone. She saw my son outside and stopped to ask if we'd walk her home. (Mind you, I had never met her before and couldn't fathom how any parent would let their 7 year old be three blocks away from home alone, let alone at the cusp of a tornadic storm...anyone could've easily kidnapped the girl & her parents wouldn't have had a clue...I was mad) I didn't think it would get as bad as it did, so we took off on foot and just reached her yard when the sirens started going off. :( We caught a ride back to the house with her mom & stepdad (who I wanted to lecture) and as bad as I wanted to get in the car and go check it out (or at least get a clear view) I opted to stay home and reassure my son that things would be fine.

The sirens went off for about 45 minutes nonstop and my aunt, who lives about 2 miles north of Cherokee said the wall/funnel cloud came through the field behind her house and she got some good pictures. She also said some storm spotters in a little, red car momentarily stopped in her driveway to take pictures and film. Sound familiar to anyone?I haven't seen the pictures yet, but I will share if they are put in my possession. In the meantime, here is link from the front page of the local newspaper. The hospital in the picture is directly across the street from the company I work for (and am writing from right now:))

Hey Joey..

We're working on a new system and the lag will not be a problem. Hopefully we'll have it running in time for the next storm chase, which may be a while after today. Major upgrades

Sweet news Reed! Thanks for the answer!

let hope we don't have to wait to long untill the next storm system.

Thanks for that link JM. Tornado's are awesome to see, but I WOULD be out of my mind if it was right in my backyard! I do not live in an area with the tornado sirens anymore I forgot how eerie sounding they are.
