Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the "Storm Chasers" Blog

Today looks to be a big day for tornadoes across parts of North Texas beginning by late afternoon.  With sufficient low-level shear and instability for tornadoes just south of a warm front draped across S OK, any supercells that develop in the warm sector will have the likelihood of rotating.  The SPC has issued a moderate risk for this area, including a 10% area for tornadoes.  We will be operating our LIVE VIDEO STREAMING system during this chase, which will initially include two storm chasing teams.  You can access the streams on our "Live Tracker" page, and also see the updated GPS positions of the two streaming teams.

BREAKING NEWS!
TornadoVideos.net will also be a part of the 2008 season of Storm Chasers.  I'll also be posting on the Storm Chasers blog throughout the storm season, so feel free to contribute on their blog as well!

A live tracker will also be running on their website, discovery.com/stormchasers

Great work Reed! By the way, today is the anniversary of the Super Outbreak. Here is a great write up of the event from ABC 33/40 weather blog:

Is anyone else have video problems? I saw the video for a while... but now all I see is a Question mark lol

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Caleb | April 3, 2008 @ 12:45 PM #

Why is there a big "?" on TVN 1

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Lori (in Norman) | April 3, 2008 @ 1:04 PM #

I am getting black screen on TVN1 and a question mark on TVN2.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Lori (in Norman) | April 3, 2008 @ 1:05 PM #

Duh I meant the one of the right is ? mark and the one of the left is black. I am tired, sorry folks, I know there isnt one that says TVN2.

Wow, Tornadovideos.net hooked up with The discovery chanel - unblievable, that is probably the best tv show i have ever seen. And now my favorite chaser Reed is going to be part of it! I might as well faint now.... God i wish i was part of thier storm chasing group.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Jen in Ohio | April 3, 2008 @ 1:46 PM #

Oh man Reed, you are SO AWESOME! You are bringing joy to my otherwise drab and boring windowless cubicle here in cloudy, cool Ohio today. MAN do I miss Oklahoma. Me and Chad love seeing your updates. It really makes a work day bearable!!!

Transporting hailstones in portable coolers--only one of the great uses for them ; )

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By dunkinbean | April 3, 2008 @ 1:48 PM #

Jason, you should remove the live streams from the news post earlier. Every random person and search bot that visits the page is gonna load them and overwhelm the connection really fast!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By DJ | April 3, 2008 @ 1:57 PM #

You guys should have a chat box up in the live tracker/ live stream part. Just a thought.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Kim | April 3, 2008 @ 2:24 PM #

Congrats! Can't wait to see storm chasers! Love the live stream!!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By jeri | April 3, 2008 @ 2:35 PM #

Looks good so far, though for some reason I'm not getting any sound from the second video stream. It was the same way yesterday for me as well, though I assumed the reboot would have fixed it. Maybe it's a problem on my end, but I get sound from the first stream so I dunno.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By jeri | April 3, 2008 @ 2:36 PM #

Also congrats on getting with StormChasers, and hope the chase goes well but safe for all those out this season.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Caleb | April 3, 2008 @ 2:37 PM #

Jeri they turned off the audio!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By jeri | April 3, 2008 @ 2:48 PM #

Ah, ok I was wondering why both were silent. Esp since just now it looked like Reed had just intro'ed the people riding with him, and I didn't hear anything.

Looks like Reed and co are heading towards the Witchita Falls storm while Stream 2 guys are going to head into it.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By SKgirl | April 3, 2008 @ 2:50 PM #

Yay for you guys being part of Storm Chasers AND for awesome changes to the site =)

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Joey sipos | April 3, 2008 @ 3:37 PM #

the storm they are on now has really strong low level rotation. They might get a tornado. To bad there cam went black

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By PB | April 3, 2008 @ 3:42 PM #

Way too much bandwidth for me. Nothing can load with the two streams going.
Why don't you guys show up on spotternetwork.org?
I can see where everybody else is on there but you guys don't show?

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Mike R | April 3, 2008 @ 3:56 PM #

PB: do you live on an acreage or farm? I get plenly of bandwidth form my Conection.

PB, They don't use spotter network.

I was thinking about posting a suggestion/asking if they could/would use SN in the forum...so if u want to go for it, i believe there are many people who want them to use in sn.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 4:57 PM #

Hail covering the road on the live feed, looks like they are through, Now where is that tornado LOL

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By jason young | April 3, 2008 @ 5:12 PM #

Dam zack , David( the chaser you are talking about is a very very good chaser) . Look's like this area is going to get wild. But I upset the wife and cant go out . Sad I am only 20 mile's north of Ardmore and ALL are spotter's but me are out. Stay safe Reed. Kfor ( www.kfor.com) has there chopper and 2 tracker on it.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 5:15 PM #

There are two chasers active, How wold yo know which one im talking abot?

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Reed | April 3, 2008 @ 5:15 PM #

We're currently repositioning southwest to catch the Throckmorton cell. The previous cell tried to happen.

Then we cracked our windshield bigtime... I think the previous cell was just a little outflow dominant.

MASSIVE hail though!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Caleb | April 3, 2008 @ 5:24 PM #

Yeah I thought the same thing Reed... maby the other one will. The main tornado thret will occur tonight. Earlyer the other cell that your were in had weak rotation. Did you cetch that?

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Mike R | April 3, 2008 @ 5:28 PM #

Has reed tested the video feed for nightime?

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By joey sipos | April 3, 2008 @ 5:38 PM #

ya, I saw your windshield cracked up near the top. That sucks. Bet you got some good fotage though. The storm you are headed toward now is nicely isolated. hopfully it will do somthing before i go to work.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By JY | April 3, 2008 @ 5:43 PM #

Looks like both teams cracked their windshields!! The price of storm chasing!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By JasonW | April 3, 2008 @ 6:33 PM #

Everytime I try to open the "Live Tracker" I get an Internet Explorer error and the page closes. Any ideas on why, or is everyone having this issue? I was on the tracker and watching the streaming at work about 2 hours ago!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By SonNy | April 3, 2008 @ 6:35 PM #

I got an idea, dont use IE :). But opera's not good for it either. You should try firefox...

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Heidi | April 3, 2008 @ 6:40 PM #

I'm not getting booted, JasonW, but I did have trouble watching this afternoon because my connection isn't as fast as what everyone else (except PB! ;) has. I didn't get to see the hail storm; it looked like it was off-line at that time, on my machine. I should probably be crying.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By MynameisBen | April 3, 2008 @ 6:51 PM #

Hey Zack...I thought i'd drop you a line...

None of those live streams you see on SevereStudios right now, are from the Severe Studio chasers....Instead, David Drummond, Steve Miller, and Chris Rice + many others.

Use SevereStudios Sister site Severe Streaming to stream live video from the field. What do u guys not understand about its FREE(Yes me or you could do it too), and just because Severe Studios hosts there stream, DOESNT make them a part of Severe Studios.

And FYI, David Drummond, Steve Miller, and Chris Rice are all Veteran storm chasers...Infact David is the Tech guy for stormtrack.org, and also chases for a tv station.

THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO ARE PART OF SEVERE STUDIOS ARE:

Kory Hartman
Kenny Allen
Ben Holcomb
Kevin Haney

Thats it.. all drama aside, i'm just trying to clarify things.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By MynameisBen | April 3, 2008 @ 7:03 PM #

Appearently i missed quite a few people who have also joined severe studios...For thos who dont understand, "Joined severe studios", means they are a part of severe studios.

Add: Eric Schroeder
Landon Rae
Jay Buchholz

And associate chasers Chris Rice, Jonathan Brouwer and Josh Lockwood

http://www.severestudios.com/team
^The above Link has everyone, and what there part of Severe Studios is.

I'm gonna try chasing tomorrow, anybody else?

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Zack | April 3, 2008 @ 7:43 PM #

Just to let you guys know. That one zack saying stuff about severestudios and stuff isn't me. So please don't think it is. To tell the difference between which zack is which. MY "z" is capital, and the other is lower case.

Anyways....We had thunderstorms develop just to the south of me. I got some shots on the back side of the line.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 7:55 PM #

Oh so now im hated on here for saying some chasers arent good. Lol. Sorry zack for the confusion.

^See that at the bottom, I was trying to be a donkey's butt(keep it pg), just trying to clarify things.

No hate, BTW didnt i say "I dont things are gonna be as great as everyone thinks" Yesterday. BUST.

Lol.

Thanks everybody for the compliments. We were excited to finally get the live cam activated.

Not a bad day, but still no tube. Tennis ball sized hail was cool and took a toll on the Tahoe. Streaming video really worked about as well as we had hoped although there are a few things we are gonna try so that we avoid the "data holes" in the future and don't end up with periods of a black screen. Hope everyone enjoyed it!

Looks like we'll be down for a couple of days, but things should heat back up next week. Still a long ways to go in storm season 2008.

Joel

I say don't worry about eating Pizza Hut during chase season! Keep the ritual alive!
Reed, Joel, Cnote, Jason, good work today! It's amazing how every season is so different. Last year started out early for the plains... this year, the start was in the Southeast. May be some more severe weather here tomorrow. I'm sure Reed will blog about the Deep South event for tomorrow.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By JY | April 3, 2008 @ 9:20 PM #

It is not looking good for communities south of Little Rock! The fox affiliate is streaming their newscast online: http://www.fox16.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoId=3762@video.fox16.com&navCatId=6

That was great guys, absolutly brilliant. I can't wait to actually see a Tornado develop in real-time. Today was a good test day for the TVCam, next time will be the real thing ;)

I sure hope that Hail didn't do too much damage... I was wondering if it would crack the windshield when I was watching it come down.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By JY | April 3, 2008 @ 9:23 PM #

There is still a baseball game on going in Little Rock!! Someone needs to call that game with the lightning threat.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By smt | April 3, 2008 @ 9:26 PM #

Reed, Joel, and Chris - it was great to watch the streaming - works fine on my computer. The Discovery page and photos are really good-the tracker was up and running there for all to see. Looks like you all are going to be famous!!! We all can't wait for the first episode!
And hello JY!!!!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 9:30 PM #

They called the game, Still no tornado reported, however new tornado warning.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By JY | April 3, 2008 @ 9:31 PM #

Hello smt! Can't wait for July and SSI!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 9:36 PM #

Tornado warned cell showing rapid signs of weakening. Indications of a weak tornado are still there.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By smt | April 3, 2008 @ 9:56 PM #

JY-hopefully tornado season will be over by July and August is too early for hurricanes. We have a window-a slight one, but hope for the best. I used the Katrina DVD again this week. I noticed the predictions for a bad hurricane season this year......maybe the TVN team will document one of those too.
Drive carefully Reed - and rest up for round two next week.
Question for Reed - will the streaming work on an iphone? We tried at work today, but couldn't get it to load??

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Connor | April 3, 2008 @ 9:56 PM #

I just got back in about an hour ago. I managed to get on the storm that tracked through the western part of North Texas... right as it died. Oh well. With the kind of hail today's storms are producing I guess it's a good thing I arrived too late.

Tonight could still get interesting. I am in a SVR Storm watch, and while I haven't had a chance to look at it, the NWS seems to think we have the potential for some large hail.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By SKgirl | April 3, 2008 @ 10:24 PM #

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
On the phone with Donny right now...he just called me, from his tornado shelter!! Sirens going off, they have no electricity and for now they're doing ok..

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Darrin | April 3, 2008 @ 10:34 PM #

I was kind of wondering whether Donny was out on this storm or not ... it is GOOD to know he is okay.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By zack | April 3, 2008 @ 10:37 PM #

A tornado was reported near little rock airport!!!!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Stream1 team | April 3, 2008 @ 10:53 PM #

Yeah, It was also just a monster hail day for us as well. We also have a massively cracked windshield on the passanger side as it couldn't handle the baseballs. We had some definate problems with data connections today, but hopefully we will work out some of those problems soon.

Ready to roll next week, looks interesting!

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Connor | April 3, 2008 @ 11:38 PM #

The reports have started coming in from central Arkansas. This looks bad.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By SKgirl | April 3, 2008 @ 11:45 PM #

I haven't heard from Donny again yet =/...
I promise though if I do I'll post it on here again immediately.

Gotta say that was the creepiest phone call of my life, because I have never heard tornado sirens before. I only know how they sound from TV/videos, until tonight =X.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Darrin | April 4, 2008 @ 12:15 AM #

Airplanes overturned at Little Rock's airport. Fuel on the friggin runway. If those planes are big this could be one of the most damaging tornadoes of all time.

This was a tornado, by the way. The National Weather Service sort of observed it passing over their office in Little Rock.

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Ez | April 4, 2008 @ 12:25 AM #

now lets not over dramatize stuff

Moderate Risk, Live Streaming, and the Posted By Connor | April 4, 2008 @ 12:27 AM #

Haha come on Darrin. You're right, this could be a very big event for Arkansas, but I wouldn't go as far as to say one of the most damaging tornadoes of all time.
