Tornado-warned cell in NW KS!

A lone supercell has developed in Northwest Kansas in what appears to be less-than adequate shear and moisture, but a tornado warning was just issued by Goodland NWS.  The couplet has not yet been very strong, but softball size hail has been reported in Decatur County.  While a brief tornado is not out of the question with this storm, large damaging hail will be the main threat given that it appears to be slightly outflow dominant at low levels.

You know what you do when its a cap bust is SC Kansas? Visit Greensburg. That has to be one of the most erie places I have ever seen in my life. We probably spent atleast an hour walking just a one block area. It was amazing what you could find plastered into trees or still hanging from them. Nothing can describe what it is like to see that place even after a year. I will post a few pictures on the forum tomorrow.

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By Chris Bray | April 25, 2008 @ 9:16 AM #

Hey Reed, do you think that the line of storms that is moving through Illinois right now is going to wipe out any destablization in the area, or do you think we will still be good to go for severe storms later?

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By Strike | April 25, 2008 @ 9:23 AM #

Reed, If it makes you feel any better, I've dropped a few dozen f-bombs while watching your live chases. hahaha

Tornado watch for Southern Wis just posted. I'm kinda hoping it'll extend into NE Wis, but I'm not sure we'll get that lucky. ^_^

Yeah, I saw that you guys were in Greensburg, Wes. I have to say I was thinking -wow, what a desolate place for a gas station...- and then saw where the tracker was placing the team.

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By gerb131 | April 25, 2008 @ 3:16 PM #

Looks like a nasty situation in Iowa, southern Wisc, and western Ill this afternoon. Things look to be in place for at least 10-15 tornadoes and maybe a few more.
Here in Columbus Ohio after .10in of rain this morning its sunny and windy with the temp at 84 degrees. Maybe we can get some overnight storms in here.

I hate my luck.

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By Raven | April 25, 2008 @ 5:19 PM #

The radar makes it look like the storms over Northern Illinois are weakening a bit. Though I'm probably off, since I've only learned a bit here and there from watching the radars before and watching the videos on this site. Any opinions? There haven't been any more tornado warnings or reports to our East for a while. I'm basing all of this off of NOAA, so if I'm way off please let me know.

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By Raven | April 25, 2008 @ 5:20 PM #

I meant to our West, sorry. I keep calling east west.

We are under a severe thunderstorm watch here in Austin, Tx. The sun finally came out from the clouds about 2 hours ago and temps. are already close to 90 degrees. This will only fuel the storms!

Reed, you should start a TVN swear jar. You could put the AAAAAAAAAA bumber sticker on it and everything.

Hey alberto, I'm tracking that storm/tornado in Wisconsin - it's just east of Oshkosh now.

That system and the one ahead of it are making a beeline right for my position! If I'm able (IE, not called out for D.C. - clearing debris) I'll see about getting some video.

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By alberto | April 25, 2008 @ 6:53 PM #

is tornado on ground because report says rotating wall cloud so it could form or is it on ground

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By Gynsu | April 25, 2008 @ 7:06 PM #

Apparently it was only indicated on radar - Don't know if anyone actually saw one or not.

The NE most storm seems to be vearing somewhat to the east - as if it has a mind of it's own and is deciding to visit Southern Door co.

As John Goodman said once..... "he he, oh hell...."

cold front appears to be catching with the supercells making a complax of storms or sighns of an mcs forming with hail wind main threats but i think you can't rule out a spin up tornado given the extreme instability and some what low level shear present

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By KimTwister | April 25, 2008 @ 9:29 PM #

ill be on standby for tommorow in SW PA

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By alberto | April 25, 2008 @ 9:40 PM #

i think in pennsylvania where breaks in clouds can happen moderate cape should develop it should get marginal to moderate shear to give a hail and wind threat even a very brief tornado my predictions

Tornado-warned cell in NW KS! Comment Posted By alberto | April 25, 2008 @ 9:43 PM #

i think a conditional slight will likely be issued to delegate 30% srea is hard due to limited threat but i am familiar with this since i live in ny state but track severe weather all over the country every year from my computer anbd sometimes chase a storm near by
