LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By caleb | April 2, 2008 @ 5:23 PM #

Is that Jason on the bottom?

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By jeri | April 2, 2008 @ 5:24 PM #

Looking pretty cool, Reed and crew. Just hope Jason gets his chance to ride along instead of manning the chase command.

Will this hold up even in areas that are data-holes or if there is a pretty intense storm?

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By marcel | April 2, 2008 @ 5:28 PM #

Works great Reed!!!

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By caleb | April 2, 2008 @ 5:37 PM #

Heidi Jason was on there but he had to reboot

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Mike R | April 2, 2008 @ 5:40 PM #

It's your gas LOL.
Maybe it is a long term test, just leave the thing on till happy with it.
What type of connection does the feed have. You may run into problems chasing in Canada, particularly in river valleys if it is a cellular connection.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By David Reimer | April 2, 2008 @ 5:41 PM #

LOL, Hey, Since im in the middle of a Moderate Risk, Want to host my Live Camera for tommorow and tommorow night? Has Night Vision along with Sound, HD Quailty too. Just Kidding, (No Im not, email me at davidrtex@sbcglobal.net if your interested in hosting me for tommorow :D)

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Mike R | April 2, 2008 @ 5:42 PM #

LOL now i know the faces to look for when you are in my neck of the woods

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By James M | April 2, 2008 @ 5:51 PM #

Look Reed. I was all for the stuff, but you just crossed the line. The first to do this was Severe Studios. How dare you copy them. Get something original. That is way pathetic man.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Connor | April 2, 2008 @ 5:59 PM #

James are you serious? I'm sorry, but it's not that big of a deal. They didn't just go out and "copy them." If anything Severe Studios can just take this as a compliment. Now when they are on one storm and Reed is on another, we have the ability to see what is going on in different places.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By David Reimer | April 2, 2008 @ 6:02 PM #

By the way, Referring to my Cam, here is a video from February 5, 2008 Hail Storm here in SW Dallas County with a developing supercell - Small hail, however, Significant amounts.

http://saturdayaftermath.com/Weather/Video/020507/Hail%20Video.wmv

Video is a few minutes long, and starts at the beginning, and goes through the end.

Cam is on top of my 2 story home, facing the west, which seems to be a good position for seeing the wall clouds, including the one this cam captured on Monday. Includes Night Vision and Sound.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By marcel | April 2, 2008 @ 6:12 PM #

nice video david but the sound is not so good

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By David Reimer | April 2, 2008 @ 6:16 PM #

Marcel, The sound does suffer a bit, Its a very sensitive mic, which caused me problems, which is why I say turn it down half or less. But Considering I had a good wind, along with hail and rain hitting it, I could just turn the sound off, and Only have video like the other chasers, but I thought some might like sound. Good for thunder.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Reed | April 2, 2008 @ 6:21 PM #

We've been wanting to implement this for years, but just couldn't make it happen from a funding/technology standpoint. The more streaming video out there the better for emergency managers, nws, etc. This is how we as storm chasers can help the community.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Susan | April 2, 2008 @ 6:25 PM #

RED LIGHT!!-obey your rules!!hahah! this is great!

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By MynameisBen | April 2, 2008 @ 6:35 PM #

Awesome...You dont mind if i ask if this is through Severe Studios? Or your site, Just Curious. "SevereStreaming is great". The Chase cam or streaming while chasing will now be called Severe Streaming, And like your message said...It really does help the nws, spc, and EOC's. It alot easier to show a picture or look at the stream...then to try and explain

"The wall cloud is rapidly rotating...it looks like the RFD is cutting in, Ohhh nvm...Ohhh Ohhh Ohhh Tornado on the ground!" Much easier to say "Ahem, look at my stream..and provide site/info."(Sarcasm)

Your music Choices were quite the opposite "Someband i dont know" and then half of T-pain" and now slience and the turn signals.

I'm done rambling, but im bored.

BTW, i think the lastest model run will be the new trend, and tomorrow may not be as active as it were hyped up to be.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By MynameisBen | April 2, 2008 @ 6:50 PM #

They know this has sound right?

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Susan | April 2, 2008 @ 6:53 PM #

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Reed | April 2, 2008 @ 6:54 PM #

Yeah...haha!

This is done through our own.

My car battery should be done soon! The plan is to integrate several chasers with streams with the gps tracker overlay, and also to display wind speed, temperature and dewpoint from mobile wx stations

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By caleb | April 2, 2008 @ 7:01 PM #

We'll be streaming video tomorrow during the chase. So be sure to check back

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By SSFan | April 3, 2008 @ 7:46 AM #

I have been a fan of TV.net for a while, but they seem to be trying to replicate the team from SevereStudios.com since last year. At first, Reed would not even let any of us talk about SevereStudios.com here. Then he kind of backed off for a while.

SevereStudios.com was building a network of chasers last year and continues this year. Instead of trying to be the "Star" of the severe weather world like some have recently, they offered any chaser the opportunity to join their team.

THIS YEAR.. THEY GO ABOVE AND BEYOND by starting SevereStreaming.com and making it FREE to the public. I just checked their site and they now have 38 PROFESSIONAL CHASERS signed up to use their FREE service.

How do they afford this? Looks like to me that the SevereStudios.com team is more interested in service the public good, than trying to be severe weather stars.

Reed - why are you and your team so on the outer limits of the chasing community? The chasing community has embraced SevereStudios.com because they are working for the good of the community. Have you tried to work with this group at all?

Now... People on this site think Reed is pioneering something new or launching some great thing, but SevereStudios.com started streaming video back in 2005 and perfected by 2007. In 2008, they have taken it to a new level with their Live ChaseCam Network.

Reed - I plead with you. PLEASE consider what you are doing. Severe Weather should not be a competition.

I am the point where I may not visit this site anymore. The glory worship around here is starting to get sickening.

Sincerely,
TV and SS Fan

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Kari | April 3, 2008 @ 8:13 AM #

Great job you guys, I love it! I can't wait to watch and listen to you on the live stream. Good luck chasing and stay safe!

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Reed | April 3, 2008 @ 8:26 AM #

Wow...I really don't know what to think about that comment. Where did this come from????

Streaming video is not a new or unique concept...and neither is storm chasing.

I've been trying to implement streaming video for the last several years, but we couldn't even afford to have mobile internet until 2006.

Are you saying you want SS to be the only group to help out the community? It seems to me that if this were your true motive, then you would be ecstatic that we now have the capability to stream video.

We believe that in combination with the tracker, this streaming video service would be very helpful to the NWS, EMA, etc. because they will know (in real-time) the exact GPS coordinates of the stream via the tracker display as well as the radar overlay.

In response to your statement...I'd say neither of us started something new with video streaming, but they both could be something great in terms of their benefit to the community...and just because it's cool to see live streaming video.

It's not a competition for us... We just want to share what we see with other weather enthusiasts and help the community in the process.

Good luck chasing this year!

I'm still having difficulty getting my mind around that post.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

"I plead with you.. PLEASE consider what you are doing"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By marcel | April 3, 2008 @ 8:48 AM #

BTW SSFAN took time to read all the comments and then posted a comment make me wounder why he even came to this site

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Joel | April 3, 2008 @ 8:53 AM #

SSFAn,

First, don't try to hide your identity. My strong suspicion is that you are a member of SS and feel threatened by what you feel is competition. If SS's only mission is for the public good, they would not care what others are doing as long as it does not hamper their efforts. In fact, I would think they would see it as a positive thing that other chasers are offering FREE live webcams.

Like you stated, storm chasing is not a competition. Reed and I have been toying around with having live cams for the past several years. It is just another way for any storm chaser to allow others to be a part of the chase. I wonder if the first chaser to ever videotape a tornado was offended when a second chaser accomplished the same thing. A live webcam is just one of the many things we have been working on and we are excited to bring our chasing experiences live to the web. I imagine that in the next year or two you will see numerous other chasers doing the same. SS weren't the only ones with live cams last year so it's not like it is some exciting brand spanking new idea.

SS spent several chases last year spamming our site trying to direct traffic to their own. Did this action offend you? Now granted, they did stop when asked. However, they initially did not appear to have any problem using our successful intercepts to bring viewers to SS.

Reed is one of if not the most dedicated and passionate storm chasers out there and it has brought him a lot of successful and exciting chases. I feel very fortunate to be able to chase with him. The cams offered by SS, Tornadovideos.net, and the many others that are already up or likely to pop up all offer a bit of the experience of storm chasing to others who are not fortunate enough to be in tornado alley. Plus, there are numerous other exciting opportunities with a network of live cams offered by SS, TV.net, and others with storm warnings and verifications. Imagine the NWS being able to verify a tornado on the ground just by checking a web site. I can see only positive results from streaming technology.

yes i agree

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Jake (in TN) | April 3, 2008 @ 9:04 AM #

I agree as well.
Really, if storm chasing isn't a competition like you said, then why are you jeolous of other people's accoplishments?

Reed, don't let this guy jynx your chase today, good luck, and have fun :)

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By smt | April 3, 2008 @ 9:13 AM #

Hi Reed - ignore the negativity-everyone reads comments like that and interprets the real meaning-it is insignificant and unimportant! Focus on your day-stay safe and we will all be watching. Kids here are excited to watch the streaming. we are now studying severe weather and have used your website! Their assignment is to watch all unfold today and report back tomorrow.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By Matt | April 3, 2008 @ 9:20 AM #

Man great idea with the live stream. I'll be watching today before i go to work.

LIVE VIDEO STREAMING TEST Comment Posted By MynameisBen | April 3, 2008 @ 10:50 AM #

I would have to agree with Reed, the opportunity of streaming from the field, will have major effects in how the Emergency Services Groups respond, Plus it will be be real time information for the NWS, and everyone else.

I had a feeling someone, would cry "copycat." And for this person, i say this...How old are you? 5? Any logical person, would realize, if i find a way to do this awesome thing (stream video from the field), and then tell others. Eventually someone else is going to figure out how to do the same awesome things(Stream video). I really think its crap that someone would seriously have the balls to cry "copycat." When there were @ least 4 other people streaming video live last year, multiple times.

If anything this person should be saying, "Awesome another person with a public cam to help the nws/ema" instead of crying "copycat"(not wolf)

Sorry for the long possibly dramatic post bust i think its crap. And cant get past this post either. I've been pondering this response since i read it at 7:30 this morning. If anything this is embarrassing to SS, and i say that as a big SS fan.

Ben Sparks

SS and TVN fan

Before this gets too much more out of control, I just want everyone to know that I have emailed Reed and Joel to hopefully air out the concerns they brought up.

We have no animosity toward the TV team and were actually planning on linking to their stream today if things got interesting.

I am awaiting word from Reed and Joel on how they would like to proceed from this point forward. We DO think any extra "eyes" in the field are good for the public and safety.

Anyone else who wants to discuss this further can contact me at kory@severestudios.com

Thank you,
Kory Hartman

Not this again...

I just received and email from one of our visistors to our site telling me that there was a thread discussing SS on Reed's site.

Reed, as you know, we all have fans that we cannot control. I suspect many of them are 11 year olds with no day jobs.

Congratulations on the live video feeds. It is great so many chasers are finally putting up feeds this year. We will be watching your feed as I am sure people here watch the feeds on our site. It is first and foremost, to protect and warn the public, entertainment secondly.

I hope we can follow up with Reed and Joel in email today.

As for our fans that also visit Reed's site, please keep SevereStudios.com and the new SevereStreaming.com out of Reed's comments. We asked this to happen last summer when there too many people posting about our site on here. There is no reason to attack TornadoVideos.net at all.

I personally respect Reed and Joel's experience and Reed's extensive education in the field. Let that be known to everyone here. We may not agree on everything, but the chaser community is a large and unique group with many different personalities. We all have one goal and that is to protect the public.

Thanks,
Kenny Allen

Even in storm chasing, there's got to be drama :(

The way I see it is like the others have - more eyes, better opportunities for the Emergency people to get an idea of what's going on.

Besides, more video/streaming from varied people on different storms is a good thing, in my opinion. It's not like the TV.net and SS and other chasers will *all* be on the same storms - and even if they were, guarenteed it'd be from different angles, different perspectives which helps even more.

Consider that.

I for one applaud all chasers and their hard work. I'd love to chase but A) we don't get many tornadoes in New Brunswick, Canada and B) I'd chicken out I think. They're cool to see on video and such, but I don't know if I could do the in person thing. So Kudo's to the chasers and keep up the definate good work.

I don't know what makes SS any better than this: http://www.streamwebtown.com/index.php#

You can download Windows Media Encoder, upload to their server, and then embed the player onto your site, all free. They even have a step-by-step tutorial. And you won't be allowing SS to be making money off of ads!

LOL your "fans" are nothing but a figment of your imagination, did you guys even see a tornado last year? The only thing that I recall was a shelf cloud you reported in Iowa as a "wall cloud." I heard this from several others viewing the storm. Who are you guys? I've never heard anything about you till last year.

Keep up the good work, Reed and Joel! You guys are dominating.

I think it's great to see live feeds from the field! I'm also very thankful that this technology exists, and for all the time and hard work put in to make it a reality! I would like to see as many chasers streaming chases as possible.
Congrats to ALL who have done it and good luck on working those bugs out!!

"...did you guys even see a tornado last year? The only thing that I recall was a shelf cloud you reported in Iowa as a "wall cloud"..."

See? These are the type of comments that don't help anyone.

And, seriously, not the Iowa "false report" bit again! There was a wall cloud... a ragged donut stuck up under the base that was rotating... we had the live video, and the NWS saw it and issued a TOR on it.

Sorry if the other chasers in the area weren't in the same location we were. Many of them took off 5-10 mins before we left our location so who knows where they really were. Maybe there was a shelf by them or something, who knows.

Just for the record, we DID "see tornadoes" last year, too... a couple in Kansas (Hutchinson day)... and one by Plankinton, SD that we fed live to TV.

Again, I have not had a response to the email I sent to R & J... but when we are "called out", I feel the need to respond.

Thanks for the support!
Kory
