Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today

Discrete supercell initiation appears underway over Eastern AR at this time.  Currently, we're located just east of Lonoke, AR, keeping a very close eye on supercells approaching from the southwest.  Several of the cells have shown signs of rotation, but additional instability is likely needed for a more robust tornado threat.  Our plan is to hang tight here on I-40, and see how the cells progress to our southwest.

Tornado watches are currently in effect from Northern LA to the MO Bootheel region, with 0-1 km helicity values in the 600+ m2/s2 range!  If these cells can remain discrete, then strong tornadoes will definitely be possible.  This could be a very dangerous situation as these supercells progress toward the Memphis area.

Who is stream 2?

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By Dennis | April 10, 2008 @ 2:18 PM #

If you want instability keep going east on I-40. The sun broke out here in the Memphis area about 2 hours ago, temp went from 72 to 82. They haven't hit us with a watch yet but then again on Feb 5th, they didn't put us under on until about a hour before the first warning went out.

Where are you guys heading exactly?

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By Reed | April 10, 2008 @ 2:42 PM #

Stream 2 is Dick M. up in the KC area. It looks like supercells are erupting up there as well!

We're thinking about dropping south into northwest MS where the environment appears more favorable.

Not sure exactly what this means Significat Tornado Parameter (effective layer) but it appears to have really dropped off in that area, anybody know what this consists of?

Things are beginning to get very unsettled in west central Missouri.

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By Jake (in TN) | April 10, 2008 @ 3:36 PM #

I'm still thinking West TN would be a good bet, we're at 81 right now with dews up to 64, and the temp is rising.... I dunno, but I have a good feeling for us today/tonight.

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By cindylouwho | April 10, 2008 @ 3:41 PM #

Thunderstorm watch for K.C. area. We are currently alternating between beautiful blue sky with towering cumulonimbus (sp?) to dark-gray low fast-moving clouds. I can't tell on the tracker, but is Dick moving north on I-35...? Temps here continue to rise and the pressure is at 29.2, dpt. at 60. Any chances for tornados?

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By cindylouwho | April 10, 2008 @ 3:55 PM #

Could someone let me know where Stream 2 is currently located? I am in K.C. and he is (maybe still) somewhere around here.

Reed,
Have you ever tracked any storms here in Ohio?
It could get juicy tomorrow!!!

Well this appears to be a bust in this area. One of the local weather guys says the cap is in place and looks to be pretty strong. The storms in E Ark aren't showing signs of getting any stronger.

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By TravisMN | April 10, 2008 @ 4:51 PM #

Yea not to sound pessimistic but this looks to be turning out to be a big bust considering all the hype that went into today. At least you guys got to see a tornado yesterday.

Well now we are under a Tornado Watch until 11pm. Still looks pretty weak to me but you never know about this area, things can change pretty quickly sometimes.

FYI: Tornado Confirmations from last night and this morning...Two Tornadoes near Breckenridge... One EF0 south of town and one EF1 southwest of town. One EF1 Tornado in Palo Pinto County near Oran. And One EF1 Tornado hit DeSoto in the squall line that passed through this morning. Still no word on Dallas/Collin counties.

Tornado warning on the IL IA Border...I'll be racing toward Galeburg IL for a hopefully sucessful intercept here in the nexy 15 to 20 min.

(Galesburg is a general location. I'm Most likely going to take 116 through southern Peoria County.)

Strong tornadoes possible over the mid/lower MS River Valley today Comment Posted By Connor | April 10, 2008 @ 5:55 PM #

The Dallas/Collin county storm is what I'm waiting for. There does appear to be sporadic tornado damage around here, but I can't really tell.

Where do you see confirmation of the DeSoto twister? I can't find it...

Errr wow. What a let-down from all the hype. I turned down the southern Iowa stuff because it was too fast for a newb such as me - hell even Craig lost track of a bullet as he was attempting to flank it!

Nevertheless, Oklahoma and Iowa are probably tied for tornado count here in mid-April. And we are beating Kansas! I wonder if this means that the potential for a late spring Iowa outbr ... nah.

Just Missed the tornado West of La Harpe by 25-30 minutes.
And then tried playing catch up all day. In the end, a few structure pictures, with the Nikon d-200. Might have them up this weekend.

I waited to long to take off, but at the sametime things were so uncertain. It was great to be on the road again.(Thanks to the police officer who didnt give me a U-turn ticket on Main ST in Canton IL.)

This was almost a one road chase for me...as RTE 9 runs 2 miles south of my house. And i spent 80% of my mileage on RTE 9 i would bet.

Snow is really starting to pound us here in Duluth! At least an inch an hour rates right now! I'm gonna head out in a bit and check conditions. Good chance of some more Thundersnow too!
Numerous power outages and down trees have been reported throught out the City and adjacent areas.
Could be looking at 16"+ here. The Duluth Ariel Lift Bridge has been reporting gust over 50kts. Waves are expected to reach 17 to 22ft! I hope the crews on board the ships stay safe and don't turn green!

Don't feel bad, Reed. My April 7th chase was a 1500 mile round-trip bust (including chasing mileage).

Reed, after watching the speeds you guys go, you should be able to turn 9 hours into 7 easily. haha

I'm in Suwanee, Gwinnett Co. We had some real nasty weather a few weeks ago in the outbreak but didn't see any tubes. Had 3 of them miss us 2 miles north. We're about 25 miles north of Atlanta.

Radar in Birmingham is really heating up. Looks like we might have some action later this evening if it holds together but so far no watches for GA, not even Severe T-Storm. Interesting considering a tornadic cell is about to cross the border from Bama into GA.
