Shortly before 10 pm, a possible tornado roared through Downtown Atlanta causing damage to Philips Arena, the Georgia Dome, and even CNN center. The overtime battle between Alabama and Mississippi State in the SEC tournament had to be halted as the tornado struck, and small debris was raining down from the roof onto the basketball court! Minor damage occurred to the CNN center building, including shattered windows in the newsroom!

Once again, the myth that major metropolitan areas are immune from Tornadoes is dispelled. Thank heavens it wasn't stronger than it was!
very true Dunk.
Hey, what do you all think of that cell down on the LA/AR/MI? it's been looking nasty for a while now, and it showed 3.75 inch hail at one point, and is now strengthening again.
It's still going pretty strong, and looks like it'll move into MS as a yet-tornadic storm. Since it's by itself, the cell is probley getting gorged on the moisture moving up from the Gulf.
Looks like Memphis has storm warnings on it now, I see.
Holy crap! That's amazing! It's also amazing that the injuries weren't worse.
lol, I know AJ.
Yeah, I've been watching the Memphis storms closely. fortunatly (or unfortunatly depending on how you look at it) they seem to be building. I'm crossing my fingers that we'll get some good ones out here. I haven't been able to get pictures in forever ;)
Oh wow, I just looked at the cell north of Memphis. That thing is Huge!
it's showing 73dbz, with 2.75 inch hail.... might end up Tornado warned before long!
My Dad is in Atlata to catch a plane in the morning and he said it was crazy down there. He called and said the hail/wind was something else. Even worse than a few weeks ago in Bama.
Here in Ohio the fog is thick about 30 feet of visibility. Rained all day about .38in and a high of 46.
Oh wow... new SPC day 1 outlook... Looks like an EXTREME day!!! MOD risk, 15% with a htached are for Tornadoes, 30% chance of Hail, and 30% chance with a hatched area for Wind!!!
It's going to be CRAZY out there!
Jake, Makes me wonder if they didn't do that just for that cluster thats rolling through GA right now. I'm sure they will revise it by the morning but the convection in Miss, TN, and ALA will be cruising that way. IMO it looks like a cover my arse outlook.
lol, well that makes me feel a bit better then ;)
From what I'm seeing, we may end up with 2-4 waves of cells out here (In middle TN)
hmm... I beginning to think that our main severe threat my be tomorrow morning/early afternoon... What do you think?
Here is a link to the YouTube video of the Miss St-Alabama game when the storm hit. You can hear the roar of the wind as the refs blows the whistle.
This is crazy stuff!

wow... I remember that sound... sounds just like my Tornado hehe... that's a sound I'm not sure if I ever want to hear again.
It was just confirmed that it was for sure a tornado that hit Atlanta. My guess is it was an EF-1 or EF-2, though an apartment building did collapse, so who knows. The news tomorrow will be interesting.
After the Youtube version showed the team getting back on air with the excited color announcers, I kept half-expecting the higher-pitched one to start saying "it looks like it's coming THIS way."
THX for the link Dave!
CNN your tornado headquarters.
I missed it! Ive been been in Savanah, GA for the St Patricks Day parade. Will get some photos when I get back this morning. Looks like more fun is on the way today Moderate risk!
by the time u guys read this it might be outdated...BUT even when a tornado hits the CNN center...there is no footage of the tornado...kinda shows how difficult it is to capture one...
that video on youtube of the tornado hitting downtown Atlanta during the b-ball game was amazing! Very lucky that no one inside the Georgia Dome were seriously hurt or killed. Amazing!
It seems to me that I could actually hear the rumbling sound about 10 seconds into the video(about 2:40 left on the play clock), just that no one actually noticed it til it seemed to get louder and/or the foul was called(hence the action stopped and people noticed the sound).
Wow... just amazing. What a cell too!
its all over the news now.

It's been confirmed as a EF2 tornado, and now they are watching the other line that is approaching.
Maybe we'll get less politics from CNN for the next little while *crosses fingers*.
Confirmed as Jeri said. Hit the Georgia Dome, Cabbagetown historic district, Atlanta Arena, blew out windows of the Westin, World Conference Center, Olympic Memorial park, collapsed several brick structures and some wooden houses and is apparently still blowing crap around downtown.
And of course the domestic offices of CNN
Perhaps Cors could limit the language to euphamisms like crap instead of the stronger 2 word, highly intelligent post. While I'm sure Jake in TN has heard worse at school, a great website like TornadoVideos dosen't need that!
We just had a big storm miss us just north in Suwanee, GA. At work right now and been monitoring the radar all day hoping for some action. Have the camera in the car and we had a confirmed touchdown about 5 miles north of my office.
Last night was pretty freaky, could have been worse, especially if it was 5pm on a weekday during Atlanta rush hour.
Derrik, another big one is just about to pass north of you; it also has a tornado warning

Nice couplet by Cumming GA
Yeah I watched it from the patio of the office, couldn't see funnel or anything but the way the sky looked you could def. tell it was a tornadic cell. Had a real nice rain-free base from what I could see. Past us now, but looks like there is some more action forming to the west of town headed this way in less than an hour.
TWC is in Alanta their comferming an EF2 tornado touched down. Wind of 130-135 MPH.
