A coastal low pressure system will deepen today just off the coast of New England, producing substantial amounts of rain, ice, and snow across the Northeast U.S. and the Canadian Maritimes.  Northern New England will see the brunt of the snowfall, especially across the higher elevations, with over a foot of accumulation possible.  Many areas in the valleys and lower elevations in central/northern New England will receive significant ice accumulations, with over  1/2 inch of accumulation  possible.  As the low pressure area deepens this afternoon/evening and moves towards Cape Cod, winds will increase across the region, leading to power outages in the hardest hit areas from ice.  A regional radar loop from this morning is shown below:

The RUC forecast for 2300 UTC this evening shows the low pressure center just west of Cape Cod, with an MSLP of 996 mb.  While this doesn't seem like a very deep system based on surface pressure, it is a fairly strong system when viewed relative to the surrounding anticyclones.   Stay tuned for updates on the snowfall and ice totals from this textbook coastal storm.

Yeah STRONG cold front this is like a mini version of the 1993 superstorm severe weather to the south winter weather to the north

I live in Portland and this storm is horrible. It's like the southern part of the state is one big Slushie. Great for our winter economy, not so great for getting around. It snowed 6-8 inches, then has been raining rather steadily since 9:30am. There is a lot of partially flooded roads in the city. It's going to be real icy later!

We have broken both recent and very old records here and probably will continue to through April. Glad I'll be moving on to a warmer climate!

This is off topic, and i know it.

But after the outbreak last Tuesday, there was talk around here about a MASS Weather radio distribution. I was wondering if anyone has actually thought about this a bit more? Or if anyone has made any moves?

I just cant seem to get this off my mind, and i know it is much needed, and would be very appreciated. And i would like to be a big part of this if possible. Whether it be logistics(figuring out Priority such as people with no siren, population and rural population not to mention, figuring out how this could be accomplished), or donating/collecting donations.

Hey Ben...this would be a really good topic to start up in the forum. We definitely need to get something organized.

Expecting 3-7" of snow here in Duluth MN Tonight/Thursday Morning. I'll be out taking pics if it verifies.. I have doubts though the way it's been up here since late December. If it holds up and we get this snow, it'll be the 1st big dump of 2008! Looks to begin snowing between 8 PM-11 PM here in Duluth if everything stays on track.

Hmm... Sunday is beginning to look interesting in my area. local weather is showing 70% chance of rain/storms. But the SPC is saying the severe weather is going to be centered more over the far south-east... What do you guys think?

sk: I agree with you it looks pretty suspicious for next weekend. My dad and I agreed we going to keep a close eye on things because we haven't been to chase this year. :( its killing us.

Also Reed your site is freaking incredible. All of the work you put into this is really something. Great job and keep up the good work! Just a few more weeks man hang in there! ;)

Michael, I feel you there. I'm dying for March to get here, so at least we have a chance for some storms.

I'm glad you're getting snow, and not me. lol. Have fun!

Hey! Great changes here! Wow! Good job Reed and co.!

We've received 20 cm of snow today here... forecasts were for only 5... hahaha! I'm glad they were wrong! Quebec city has received 342 cm since the begining of the season !

Hi All

Ben I have to agree with you. The farm I worked on was too close to the NM border. If you listen to Weatherband U can get either Amarillo's or Albuquerque's or some times both at once, then u cant hear any warnings.

The only other thing is how can you warn people if they dont have radios or TV's Like the Mennonites or Amish people. I think a whole lot more lives can be saved if we can come up with a warning system that works for all..

I dont Know What do U guys think.

CAPE values are forecast between 1000 and 2000 J/kg. With the area of smallest CINH being in Eastern Texas and Eastern Oklahoma, it would be a good chase for Reed. The shear is much more impressive over MS / LA / AL, but with less CAPE things are still possible. Something along the lines of early February is possible again, but it doesn't look quite as severe.
