A major winter storm is still pounding parts of the Great Lakes Region and the Northeast on Saturday morning, with very heavy snow across IL, IN, Lower MI, and into Southern Ontario, and intense freezing rain across Pennsylvania, and New York State. 6-12+ inches have fallen or are expected to fall in the aforementioned heavy snow areas, with over 1/2 inch of ice accumulations in the warm sector where warm air is pumping northward over cold air at the surface. The national radar loop below from Saturday morning shows the storm in its entirety:

When first glancing at the RUC-forecast MSLP map below, it appears that the storm system responsible for this massive precipitation shield is rather weak, with a minimum pressure of 1007 mb. However, this cyclone is relatively intense when compared to the 1043 mb anticyclone to the northeast across the Canadian Maritimes!

The huge area of winter storm warnings and ice storm warnings is displayed below, with the latter extending all the way down to the mountains of North Carolina! Heavy snow is expected as far northeast as Quebec this weekend.

Shown below are pictures from the Ozarks of northern AR from yesterday courtesy of Heidi Farrar. Her location received a few hours of very heavy snow followed by sleet as the warm advection won the battle. Around 3 inches of snow fell there, with another few inches of sleet on top of that.

Below are pictures from Grand Rapids, MI from Saturday morning, which is under a heavy snow warning for storm total snow accumulations of 6-12 inches. Around 6 inches of snow fell last night, with much more on the way as the heavy bands associated with the deformation zone rotate through. These pictures are courtesy of SMT.

Here are photos from Central Illinois, courtesy of Ben (MynameisBen on the blog), a local spotter in the area. 10.7 inches of snow fell here, with travel largely discouraged still as of Friday afternoon.

Hey Reed I have some pics and a little video from what we have got so far ill upload them in a bit.
We got another 2 1/2" last night with the wrap-around stuff. NICE! I'm gonna uplaod them later & I'll post links. Our woods look amazing!
And HEY! I get my photos on the same entry as SMT - awesome! :D
My family in western MD is getting an ice storm. I talked to my dad a little while ago and they got about 1/4" freezing rain followed by a lot of sleet and are currently back to freezing rain again. Messy messy...
Hi everyone! This is coming !!! Yahoo! A snowstorm again for us in Montreal! Near 30 cm of snow, maybe more for me! I'm going to Quebec city tomorrow morning. They will receive aroung 40-50 cm. I'll try to get some pictures and videos of it.

Nice pictures Heidi! I love the first one...
Nice photos, I'm so jealous of you folks that are getting snow.

That is what is about to hit me.
Had 10.7 inches here, IDOT is still asking people to stay off the roads, although with the warmer temp near 28 the roads are relatively slush/clear.
I started digging out at 10:15 and am not done yet. This is the heart attack type snow. and with winds of 15-20 gusting to 30 alot of snow piled up in my driveway...leading to drifts of 2.5-3 ft,
Almost done shoveling. Sorry no pics.
There is about 4.5 inches on the ground already here today. And its still coming down pretty hard. I expect another 3 or 4 might fall after this system passes.
We got about .30in of freezing rain here in Central Ohio then it turned to rain and melted away. Now it is 36 and some light rain/snow not going to amount to much. Oh well hopefully we get the next big one.
My dad did have over an inch of rain in Central Alabama yesterday so that is good news.
Reed im gonna send u a few pictures from my phone if you want to put them up...I seem to have missed the cut for it though =/
The number they are coming from is 3607489@verizon.net or w/e.
area code 309
I finally have some pics uploaded online, effects from that blizzard in Regina (that some of you call a non-blizzard?). I meant to take more but it was too cold, for once its actually ABOVE -40 C (only because its been snowing off and on). Plus it was I think -51 C when I went out to take these pics so I couldnt handle being out there too long!!

Pictures sent, they arent watermarked, nor do i care if they get watermarked. And yes i shoveled all of my driveway, if he posts the pictures, you'll see i filled my moms boyfriends Chevy s-10's, bed full of snow, and ran out of places to put it.
I'll put the pictures on my myspace, tonight/tomorrow.
Ben ya gotta get yourself one of these bad boys for doing the driveway.

That makes it to easy! haha.
I actually dont mind it...i love playing and being outside when its snowy...and my neighbor told me a snow shoveling machine. I guess i've grown accustom to living in the open country. Also, its kinda my fault we have to shovel anyways, as i wrecked my fourwheeler(which we had a plow) 5 yrs ago...chasing a storm lol. I deffintly realize it wasnt smart to chase a storm on a fourwheeler.
...the snowstorm warning is over...we are under a freezing rain warning... pfffft! that's it...I'm mad! I hope Quebec city will receive snow until tomorrow mornig. I'm leaving Montreal at 5 A.M. to go there...If I'm lucky, the storm will leave snow there...
VALLEE DU RICHELIEU - SAINT-HYACINTHE
3:37 PM EST FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2008
FREEZING RAIN WARNING FOR
VALLEE DU RICHELIEU - SAINT-HYACINTHE CONTINUED
A PERIOD OF FREEZING PRECIPITATION GIVING UP TO 5 MM IS EXPECTED
AFTER THE SNOW.
A MAJOR LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS MOVING ALONG THE VERMONT BORDER AND IS
HEADING TOWARD THE MARITIMES. THE SNOW AND THE BLOWING SNOW AFFECTING
WESTERN AND CENTRAL QUEBEC AT THIS TIME WILL MOVE TO THE EAST OF THE
PROVINCE WITH THE SYSTEM.
THE SNOW WILL CHANGE INTO ICE PELLETS AND FREEZING RAIN OVER THE
SOUTHERN AREAS OF THE PROVINCE THIS EVENING AS A WARM FRONT
APPROACHES NEAR THE LOW. AREAS NEAR VERMONT AND NEW-HAMPSHIRE COULD
EVEN SEE RAIN IN THE WARM AREA OVERNIGHT. HOWEVER, THIS MILDER AIR
WILL RETIRE RAPIDLY LATE IN THE NIGHT AND WE CAN EXPECT SOME SNOW
AGAIN.
Reed I have a tone of pictures and about 4 or 5 minutes of video once i upload everything ill send it to ya.
Anyways this was the amount of snow we had around 2 pm this afternoon.

you people down south/east are hogging up all the good weather, the pattern has to shift so we get some excitement up here in Northeastern Minnesota. Here in Duluth January 2008 went down as the 4th least snowiest January on record with just 2.8" of total snow for the entire month! We only had 0.13" of total precip for the entire month of January, making it the all time driest January on record. These records date back to 1870! What a difference a month makes!! We had 35" of snow in December up here, January just 2", what the heck is going on??? argh!!!!!!
Hey everyone! Glad to see that someone got some snow on the ground. ;) It's a comfortable 52 degrees here right now, and it's supposed to be a nice and warm weekend... perfect for awesome outdoor stuff.
heres the forecast discussion just east of me A STRONG UPPER LEVEL TROF AND ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO
THE REGION ON TUESDAY. THE AIRMASS ACROSS THE MID SOUTH WILL
BECOME UNSTABLE WITH CAPES NEAR 1000 J/KG AND LIFTED INDICES OF
-2C TO -4C. WIND FIELDS ALOFT LOOK IMPRESSIVE AS WELL WITH
SIGNIFICANT DIRECTIONAL AND SPEED SHEAR. 0-3KM HELICITY VALUES ARE
FORECAST TO CLIMB ABOVE 300 M2/S2 WITH 850 MB WINDS OF 60 KTS AND
500 MB WINDS ABOVE 80 KTS. OF COURSE TUESDAY IS STILL 4 DAYS AWAY
AND THE TIMING AND STRENGTH OF THE SYSTEM CAN CHANGE BUT AT THIS
TIME THE INGREDIENTS LOOK TO BE LINING UP FOR A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE
WEATHER OUTBREAK.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hey Donny, do ya figure it's worth worrying about Tuesday this early, or not? lol.
Nice photos everyone! I like those drift shots, SKgirl!
Here's what the area around our pond looked like early this morning before everything melted:

Hi everyone! Freezing rain since 18h...my car looks like an Igloo!!! It reminds me the great storm of freezing rain in 98... near Quebec city (where I'm going tomorrow morning) there's 20 cm of fresh snow and it's really not done yet! Yahoo! But here, south of Montreal, it's Ice pellets and freezing rain... we had near 3 inches of snow before but now everything is under ice...
Oh yeah! And if you wanna see what's going on here...
http://www.internet.uqam.ca/web/c18225/cams.html
Wow! Heidi-that picture of the pond was beautiful! You got a new camera a while back didn't you?
We got about 8 inches of snow in Northern IL last night. Pretty-but not as picturesque as Heidi's!
Wow Heidi, thats an awesome cam you got there,,,can you please take my official presidential foto.. =)
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Hi Cors, er, I mean, Mitt. ;P
I've had the same camera for almost 2 years now; I DID get a new camcorder a few weeks ago. Maybe that's what you were thinking, Susan? Reed & I actually both have the same kind of camera - a Nikon D200. I use a 18-35mm wide-angle lens, but I want to get a 10-20mm (same as Dick M. uses on his Canon), maybe in time for the spring season.
Our pond looked awesome. Here's another shot:
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/020108pond2cr.jpg
wowwwww! that was beautiful!
That is what I must've been thinkin-new camcorder. Verrrryy nice. me-I just got me an Easy share! still can't figure out how to download it to get to you guys to see my pictures. you told me once-but still can't figure it out! plus the watermarking is a problem!! haha-will have to pin my 18 yoa down and help me one of these days!(I thought that was Cors!wasn't sure!)

are you guys aware of a TV news station that had to leave on air because of a tornado within the last day or two? I walked in on it on our local tv and totally missed the beginning of the story-can't find it anywhere. The screen shows the radar-and that was it.
I love it Heidi!!!! you da best! =)
Hey folks!! How's things been!! I've been busy packing stuff and working too!! Looks like some interesting weather comin eh??
Marc up in Maine was having freezing rain, too, Caro. Kind of put a crimp in his plans this evening.
I'm curious about this tornado warning/news station thing now. I didn't hear about that. It was probably during that gulf coast event the other day.
I just e-mailed my tv station-but they are on air-hopefully will e-mail me back soon-looking on weather.com to look for it/can't think of anywhere else to look!
Looks like Ben hogged all the snow! Your cell phone takes pretty good photos!
Brady! Hey! We got SNOW!!!!!!!! AAAAAAA!!!! :D
I see this Heidi!! Congrats!! I almost for got what falling snow looks like!! hehe We are due!! Hopefully early next week!!
I can hardly wait for Opening Day!! Go Mets!! =(
Heidi Nice picture along with SkGirls pictures. Susan I think that happened like 2-4 days ago. I seen it also but can't remember what day it was on. We still have at least 3 inches on the ground so I can't believe AJ missed out. Hope everyone is doing well and I can't wait for the spring :)
Johan Santana 7 year $150.75 million dollar contract, is that right? HOLY CRAP!
Found it!! It was in Evansville, IN on 1/29/08
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-WRIE5e6UE
A couple of comments said it was due to heavy winds.
Thanks for that Susan. It would have bugged me until I found out! :)
no problem-it was driving me nuts! Looking at WFIE news station-they did have a confirmed tornado.
(and now looking at pictures from viewers from WFIE in Evansville, IN-yes ladies and gentlemen-we have a person who took a picture of wall cloud? from WAL-MART!!!)
Wal-Mart: THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!! :D
It's funny, the WFIE website looks very much like our station's site. They must also be a Raycom Station.
Hey guys, how is everyone?
nice pictures Heidi, SMT and Ben....
our country got hit bad in some orts yesterday....a ferry got beached due to the storm, a oil carrier or something like that was abandonned and another ship was aswell......cars had to be abandonned on the A66 as the snow was too bad.....white out conditions aorry's which were left are almost half covered in snow!!......i got some videos of the storm here.....all we got was some very heavy sleet and 50 mph winds....
Tim,,,,the new world doesnt care,,,I told them already
lol Cors..... i spose they are getting a lot more than what we are getting lol....oh well
thats probably true tim....but this beast we just had (950mb) was historic...you know it, I know it but americans couldnt care less. its a shame
lol Cors, we americans care!!!! It is just that right now, we are kinda busy with our own weather.
how far north of you was the snow Tim?
Next week sure looks interesting...we're alternating between 70 deg temps and snow this winter!
Beautiful picture, Heidi :).
Thanks everyone too for the comments!!
I'll be taking pics today of the snow here at home in Canora...WOW. I've only been gone a week and my god did we ever get snow between Monday/Wednesday!!
My sister said there was 3 "snow days", only abouy 3 kids showed up in class so they did nothing all 3 days (most of them are farmers, and when its -50s obviously the buses won't run).
Wow SKgirl..-50 and the buses don't run? If its -60 here the buses still run. No one cares how cold it is here, same with Winnipeg according to Jon.
Anyway..It's boring here..Sunny out, -22C here. I don't expect very much more snow for this month.
Hey Reed....it was about 100 miles north of me and to the south of me aswelll.... its was really bad in some parts for this country anyway.....shame it missed me i was ready for it....but ia video of when the small part of the storm came through here with 50 mph winds
DAY-3 SLIGHT RISK!!!!
Hey Reed, if you & Joel and/or whomever else are coming to the Ozarks for an EXTREME night-time chase, let me know & I'll make dark-chocolate brownies & lots of coffee, which will also have chocolate.
You guys (meaning everyone as a whole) do NOT understand what happens to me with that much caffeine in my system!!!! 8-D AAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
heidi- look at the cape values ahhhhhhhhhhhhh me thinks tonight it will be a moderate risk day 2
Yeah, Donny ... they might hold off until Day 1, but it does look like a mod. risk set-up. I just hope that we get whatever we get during daylight hours. Mod. risk for 2/5 looks likely too.
This looks very similar to those last several events we've had, the exception being much higher CAPE.
Hey everyone I am very interested in Monday as well mainly across E OK/SE KS/W AR/ SW MO. I'm liking the incredible dewpoints and CAPE values for this time of the year. Looks to be a strong dryline setting up in E OK/SE KS late Monday afternoon and evening. The Sig Tor parameters are looking impressive especially in NE OK/SE KS. Only problem may be the lack of initiation before dark. If the WRF is right placing the dryline in SE KS/NE OK my dad and I will for sure be on this event.
One last thing all in all maybe a high end SLGHT/low end MOD setup with E OK/SE KS/SW MO/W&C AR/NE TX all included in the risk.
lol, I've been telling my mom for days to watch the weather for day 3/4. Glad to hear that the someone agrees with me :D
BTW, anyone know why I can't put in my web address on this comp? I can do it on my PC, but every time I try with this one I get 'Please enter a valid web address'.
Thanks for posting the pics reed! And thanks for the comments guys...
Heidi my phone takes Ok pictures...Those are resized(bigger maybe?), watermarked, and maybe color/exposure edited....i'm not sure what reed did...but it looks good.
All the storms pics on my Myspace profile are from my phone also. Those are un-edited.
Its just a VZW razor phone...the only time i use it to take pictures is of the weather/clouds/sunsets.
Jake you have to make it a link yourself....as in put:
http://www.entersitenamehere.com
not just www.
ok, lets try this
Hey everyone! I agree with Michael O., the ingredients are perfect for some action on Monday. I"ll be paying close attention to this system also.
Monty: I'm glad I missed out, I'm getting spoiled by this sunshine and plum balmy temps we're having right now. haha. You can keep your snow ;)
Woo! it worked! Tyvm Ben :)
