Heavy snows!

Very heavy snows have developed in a band stretching from southern Lake Michigan, though Grand Rapids, MI, and northeastward toward Flint and Saginaw, MI.  2+ inch per hour snowfall rates are possible with the heaviest snows, and the band will not be moving very fast, if not pivoting around the same position as the vorticity maximum closes in.  I just got a report of the grass being completely covered in Grand Rapids with very heavy snows!

The surface map for the Great Lakes Region below, which is available at www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/surface, shows the moderate to heavy snows falling across the region.  The 4-star snow at Grand Rapids (temperature 34/dewpoint 28) represents the heavy snow falling there.  One positive about this winter storm is that temperatures are near or above freezing, which means that the snow will have trouble sticking to paved surfaces, except in the most intense snowfall rates.  However, temperatures will drop tonight after the storm passes which could result in some re-freezing.  Stay tuned for updates!

I'm on the SE Wisconsin Lakeshore (Lake Michigan) and we've got nothing as of 5:50 PM (CST). It's been "snowing" all day, but no accumulation here. I've heard from family in Burlington (about a half hour west) that they've gotten about an inch.

Hey Reed, what is up man?!

I am in Rome, New York and the same storm system is moving through with one of two large precip sheilds moving through. At the start we had nearly 3 inches of snow in one hour until warmer air aloft changed the precip to a sleet/rain mix this evening. Roads are trecherous, especially on the hilltops around the area. Great show man, you made me fan.

Shoveled 4 1/2 inches off the driveway when I got home. Snow was heavy and dense. Roads are rough and hopefully will be cleared by the morning.

Love the show Storm Chasers! We can't wait for Sunday night and Thursday night. Big fans of your team!
I live in central Illinois and we have about 2-3 inches of snow and winds that stuck pretty good. Have Mom in central Fla and watching that system also!! Thanks for all your hard work and taking the risk to make tornado season safer for others!

Hi Reed and Team

I live in SE WI on Lake Michigan as well and for the most part the snow is over. Just some light snow expected today. Our town had about 6" of snow, with parts of our county at 10" (well above predicted amounts). We had a good deal of ice and rain mix last night, turned snow. Fun stuff with more snow predicted on Wednesday.

Well, we didn't get much snow here in NE Illinois where I live, the winds were "dominating", must have been gusting up to 30-35ish at times. But we sure got alot of sleet, which turned into ice over night as the temp. dropped. Woke up to a good layer of it on the roads. Even with salt being layed down by the city's snow plows, the roads were not safe at all. Just driving to school, which is only a 2 mile drive, I must have seen 5 or six cars off the road.

Anyways, love the show and can't wait to see the final episode next week.

I had to drive through the Michigan snow from the Detroit area to Mount Pleasant. The trip normally takes just over 2 hours but this one took nearly
4 1/2 hours. We have at least 5 or 6 inches here in Mount Pleasant. There was heavy snow the entire way.

Why do people feel they have to risk their lives to drive to work or school when they know they should not be traveling? Especially when you have a job you could work remotely from home. I grew up in Iowa and Missouri, but I never understood this.

Because people have to get to class the next day and you don't know what the weather is gonna be like 100 miles away. Its called being responsible. You learn to deal with it up here! I appreciate your concern though.
