More tornado reports today!

While not nearly as intense as yesterday, 8 tornado reports have still been received by the SPC as of 9:00 pm EST today (Tuesday).  Sadly, a tornado caused 1 fatality in Pope County of northeastern AR as a textbook supercell rolled through that region earlier today.  While the instability today in eastern AR/western TN was on par with yesterday in MO, the low-level shear was not as strong and not as optimally aligned with the storm motion, thus fewer and less violent tornadoes were the story.

A tornado watch is still in effect across portions of central TN, eastern MS and northern AL, but the tornado threat appears to have diminished substantially as the low-level shear and instability has weakened slightly as the surface cyclone lifts northeast.  Still though, isolated, brief tornadoes are possible, especially along the southern end of this convective system where instability is highest.

Here are pictures of the gustfront of a supercell in northeastern AR near the eastern fringe of the Ozark Mountains, shot by Heidi Farrar this morning; supercells and a wall cloud in central AR from Donny; followed by video of the Kenosha, WI tornado contributed by local resident Holly B.

Yep, sure enough, the power flashes show it's definitely on the ground, though the middle isn't visible. As I remarked on the previous thread, it's now been rated as an EF-3, and my dad's co-worker is going to head down there tomorrow to help his family.

Very good pictures, Heidi! :) Our storms we got yesterday were totally obscured by the dense fog, the only way to tell the storms were coming was that the fog started to recede and the clouds got darker.

The state airports are still somewhat backed up with flights from all the fog over the weekend, and I think they are still cleaning up the mess from Sunday's deadly 100-vehicle pile-up near Madison.

XD! I actually went back and looked.
So whats the consensus? Ya guys think this whole thing is just about over?
We have the liklihood of thunderstorms after 3am which means I should go ahead and sleep now and get up around then and just stay up for morning formation.

The storms wont likely be all that strong but it's a pity this whole thing is winding down and winter is likely to settle back in. I guess its about time to just keep watching the southern regions once more since thats usually where the big weather is this time of year.

I noticed the line of storms had powered past miami county and were into champaign and south. Knowing ohio weather, there wont be anything big to worry about with those ones.
Thats just it.. Ohio does get the bad weather too, but unless if a tornado drops or some straightline wind forms, nothing bad will come of this.

Thats just me speaking though, based upon what I've experianced as a kid and young adult there.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By gerb131 | January 9, 2008 @ 12:16 AM #

Dan, That is true 98% of the time although this line looks to be holding together so far. I live in Fairfield County so we shall see.... No lightning with these storms btw.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Dan | January 9, 2008 @ 12:28 AM #

I'm a bit more intrested in that second line south of chillicothe myself. it rolled through clinton county right over the radar site but according to my cousin in the area there was no real damage to be reported.
pickaway and ross countys are intrest 1 for me.
Then the bigger warning box down in adams, highland county and ohio county.

That one seems to be the strongest cell so far. I'll get ahold of my buddy who decided to mock me by saying he was gonna follow the line as long as he could.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By gerb131 | January 9, 2008 @ 12:33 AM #

Ross and Pickaway look good but don't rule out Fairfeld yet, guess Hilliard in northern Franklin had a gust to 64.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Dan | January 9, 2008 @ 12:42 AM #

I'm watching the one poised to slam into ashland county myself. the storm showed signs of weakening based upon the radar system I'm using, then they issued a new warning box. a double check showed the storm was intensifying. Looks like that'll be the hotspot tonight.

Not so much of a bow anymore!! Still nasty looking though!! hope the damage isn't too bad!!

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By gerb131 | January 9, 2008 @ 1:47 AM #

Saw some limbs and a few trees down I'd say winds were all of 60 or so. Power flickered a few times but still on not for all of the places as I hear a bunch are without power. Good night.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Dan | January 9, 2008 @ 2:32 AM #

Well, thats it for all the major weather events. nothing big to report out of the cleveland area other than the wind which is reaching max gusts of 50 or so miles per hour.

Forcast model shows that the cold front will push through maryland within the next 4-8 hours bringing rain and the possibility of some thunderstorms. According to the latest forcast discussion, the C.A.P.E. is rather low so anything that forms will be weak and short lived. I would say that the actual rumbles of thunder will be on the eastern side of the cheasepeake bay on towards delaware. afterwards, the tempuratures will begin to drop slowly over the next few days but manage to stay above 50 up untill sunday.

Well, Goodnight folks.

Good Morning everyone....it seems as if i may have been in/much more closer to a tornado than i think...

I was reading about storm damage on the local news site, and there was Damage reported Near Allentown and Broadway roads.

I was chasing just 1/2 miles down the road on allentown when i got what i thought was a RFD, but may have been a tornado? If it were a real tornado i passed through, it was weak...winds 70-90 max for a short time. I do note a slight pressure change(Noticable with my ears they had to pop)

Scary thing is my house is also on allentown, about 1 mile from broadway.

Thanks for the comments on the pics, everyone. And Susan, Yes, you did make me look. I knew there was no way I had actually included an armadillo - I checked because I wanted to be able to say "No, that's a cow pie sorry..." ;)

The one with the mailbox in it was taken from my front porch. And no, that is not my cattle pasture across the road, in case anyone was wondering... I took that photo just after I said "storms exploding over my county!" yesterday. The gust front was moving very fast, and I had looked out the back of the house and saw very dark skies with billowing tops, not realizing that it was the gust front until I got out to the front and saw this line. So I jumped in the truck and headed up to a high grassland a few miles from home and caught the back side of it (I usually like to get in front and experience it that way, but was too late - I had better lighting on the back side anyway!). This was actually at about 1:30 ... I forgot to tell Reed the specifics when I sent the photos. I'm sure none of you will ever be able to forgive him for saying it was morning, though, right? :D - I went to bed at 8:00 last night!!!

I'm glad some people got footage of that Wisconsin tornado. I'm going to go search YouTube to see what's out there for the Missouri stuff.

welcome john- and well in my opinion-and experience- there have been a few years where it started hot like this- and then did nothing but slow down- and then again theres been years where it was slow- and then just erupted- so it go either way

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 9, 2008 @ 12:33 PM #

Andy: armadillos are more than common; they're ubiquitous, and are also the scourge of the Earth. We thought the same thing about them being cool when we first moved here, but then we realized their destructive nature. They are "rooters" and dig holes all through your yard ... don't even think about having any nice, neat landscaping. In tried that last year and everything was 100% wrecked in a week's time.

On the topic of early tornados and what that "means" to the rest of the season ...

I am in *no way* insinuating that this is a sign of things to come, but it is worth (re)calling to everyone's attention ...

... 1999 saw a record tornado outbreak for Arkansas, and it happened in late January. ... I think most of us know where I'm going with this, i.e. what else happened tornado-wise in 1999, but for you guys who can't remember that far back ;) ... go do a google search and type in "1999 tornado" and I think you'll see what I mean.

or check this link

http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/headlines/outbreak.shtml

The important thing, before trying (this early) to draw any similarities between this year and 1999, though, would be to look at what was going on climate-pattern wise and see if we're having the same thing happen now. That would be the first step, but most likely won't be that evident until the year is over and we're in reflection mode.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 9, 2008 @ 2:40 PM #

Hey PB Heidi's pics are the gust front, and Donny's pics are of a Supercell in his area(I Believe.)

They are both awesome peices of art/photography.

I was wondering is someone, Preferably Reed/Joel/Donny/Tim MN/Heidi, has any input on My post earlier, although i'd be interested in what everyone thinks.

The more and more i think about it, i think it may have been a weak tornado, but i'll prolly never no. As i seen the corn stalks and leaves, and small bush branches fly infront and into the side of my car my first thought was "I'm in the f****** tornado!" kinda like from Lanny and Randys video. Overall it was just a weird feeling, as and just after that happened.

Also does anyone know where i can download radar data from the KILX station for the storms time frame period. I would like to go over the radar data to see what i may/may not have encountered. I jumped on this cell directly from work so, i didnt have gr3 or any radar with me, i was going off what was coming over the radio, and also the radio station took us to live direct coverage from my EOC.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 9, 2008 @ 2:43 PM #

PB ... after further review (in discussion with Reed and others Mets.,), the series from me is no longer being called a gust front. It had some characteristics of a gust front based on appearance alone, but I think we're all in agreement that it wasn't one. I am about to go say something about it on my report on ST, also.

Going by what was visible on radar, and upon reflection, this was more likely simply a weak, secondary line that formed due to the boundary from the preceding line as it encountered the cold front.

One day, maybe, if I'm lucky, you can forgive me for this scandalous error. ... :)

Great pics Heidi and Donny, OH to live out in the wide open spaces........instead of a townhouse! I did find a spot or my photographer husband for taking weather shots not too far from here. Heidi, could you see the clouds moving northward as the front approached or were they just moving laterally?

Good pics by the way. You too Donny. I don't think I could resist chasing something with a dome like that on it now that I know what could be at the bottom.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By andy | January 9, 2008 @ 3:10 PM #

That's an interesting point Heidi about 99, Im sure there are people compiling this data and probably have good projections. I think from here on out outbreaks will continue.

Thanks for the reply Heidi
I know very little about weather but am trying to absorb as much as the old gray matter will let in.
Have seen a few different looking gust fronts, but never one in Arkansas, in January (or ever :), but Reed said it's a gust front, so I thought it must be one. I was just curious about the mechanics of what I was looking at there. Thanks for clearing that up.
Certainly nothing scandalous haha

Dan-Dan reporting in!
The front rolled through. I managed to capture a few shots of the cloud formations. By the time it crossed into maryland the entire line dissapated up till about new york or so.
So basically allI got were some good cloud shots of the actual frontal section passing overhead along with a hopeful frame of referance for the wind speeds.

I suspect the dissapation was due to the front hitting the appalacian mountains, though I cant rule out whatever possibility there could exist. As far as I know there wasnt any air mass in place other than the same warm air mass that you guys had.

Heck, we didnt even get a drop of rain. A real dissapointment considering what you guys got.
I'll post the pictures soon enough and let you guys decide if there is anything worth note in my pictures.

More tornado reports today! Comment Posted By Zack | January 9, 2008 @ 3:56 PM #

Hey guys.... Looks like the weather is quieting down for awhile after a historic January tornado outbreak! Looking at the SPC day 2 outlook, there could be some more severe weather - gulf states into the Tennessee Valley. Well see.

A cold front came through here a couple days ago bringing a return to more winter like cond.

Oh and btw, very cool pictures Hiedi and Donny.... I also watched the vid by Holly and thought it was great as well:D

Final say on my pics:

(drum roll, someone, PLEASE!)

Okay. Our Chief Met. says that the photos above (which he also used in his blog) *was* the cold front. - What a "Duh" moment, huh?!? :D He says that as the front came through, there was still enough lift and instibility left from the pre-frontal line of storms for those to form. Basically, I guess this is what you get with like 100 CAPE and no cap.

I think that if I would have gotten ahead of the line, instead of trying to catch up to it, I would have never called it a gust front. AND if I'd have looked at the water vapor image I would have been able to see the cold front on there.

I hope this just goes to show everyone that even supreme expert weather visionaries extraoidinaire can learn and make mistakes and learn some more!

:D

Ben, well, I guess it looks like there could have been a weak tornado, based on those photos in the link ... maybe it was one of those that doesn't show a condensation funnel, and if that was the case, you could very easily have driven past it without knowing it was there, depending on the conditions. Geez, I wonder how close you really came to it, if you didn't actually drive through it?!

I know the feeling of being that close and feeling like, "Hey, wait a second!" :P At least you didn't get blown off the road or anything!

Man looks like a good setup tomorrow! God I wish I could chase SOOOOOO bad I don't care if its Alabama, Missouri, or Alaska I just want to chase and see tornadoes. I am really hoping we see this active pattern through the spring! My dad and I are very pumped to get out and chase again. It hurts watching setups and not being able to chase them. Looks like the fun part of the storm went just to the north of me, and missed us by about half a mile. That's not so bad, at least the one that went over actually had something, and that's new for us, usually it just splits and goes around us or dies ust before it gets here.

So if they up this to a moderate risk, do you think I'll get into the Slight risk area? (I know I keep asking this kind of stuff, but I can't forecast yet, and it's always a good idea to get multiple opinions)

No problem Jake, we're always learning. Um, since you're already in a moderate risk area, you have moved past a "slight risk" setting. "Slight" comes before "moderate." You better be ready to chase, be cause that's the best the SPC can do for a guarantee.

I'm in a Moderate area? I thought that was south of me, I'm in Humphreys county, right on the middle line of TN, just right by the Tennesee River, in western-middle TN.
If I am, I am REALLY going to get hyper lol.

Hi everyone! Great pictures Heidi and Donny! Here in the region of Montreal, the 40 inches of snow we had has completely melt down since sunday because of the rain and high temperature (over 10°C - 50°F)... Flood watches and warnings are everywhere near a lake or river... Fields look like rivers... Waterworld ! lol

There's strong winds blowing between 30 and 40 KM/H (18-25MPH) and gusts are between 65 and 85 KM/H (40-53MPH). There's trees down and damage to roofs.

More than 100,000 Hydro-Québec clients were plunged into darkness Wednesday after strong winds knocked out electrical lines in several regions.

As of 2 p.m. ET, a total of 100,400 Hydro-Québec clients in the Laurentians, Montérégie, Lanaudière and Outaouais regions were affected by the blackout.

About 10,700 homes were affected in Montreal alone.

Wind gusts as strong as 90 kilometres per hour blew off tree branches that became entangled in electrical wires in a few sections of the grid, said Hydro-Québec spokesman Jean-Philippe Rousseau.

Environment Canada issued a wind gusts alerts for the Saint-Laurent valley from the Ontario border to the Gaspé.

The wind was expected to move east Wednesday evening.

Workers have been dispatched to replace the power lines.

Thank you Tim for the site and input, and Heidi and Donny as well...

After looking at the site you gave me i find it a little more plausible to be a RFD Cut, still possibly a brief tornado, and all from what i see, i believe the damage reports to be correct, as the srv shows the rotation erupt in just 2min.

Here take a look...

http://vortex.plymouth.edu/gen_nids.cgi?ident=ILX&pl=n0r&yy=2008&mm=01&dd=07&hh=23&nn=16&size=912x684&loop=no&zoom=.0865&center=40.55%2C-89.39
^At this point i was located in the Lower precip/dbz notch on the north side of the storm It was actually barely raining.

^ Two rotation signatures are clerly evident on the SRV1 scans.

I dont know, anyone got any idea, i'm not gonna say i was in the tornado, but it was a possibilty, i was deffinitly very close.

Still would like to hear Reeds thoughts on this.

ty for showing a radar ben- thats kinda helpfull for my input- yeah i do think it could have been a weak tornado- not entirely the best tvs i have seen- but there was still 2 distinct areas of rotation- and if you look at the composite of that line- you can even see a bit a hook echo

ok, Weather.com is showing us getting the storms in late morning-early afternoon, can anyone conferm this? if so, I'm gonna be out of the house (and even farther away from the 30% zone) and I may be out of luck unless they extend the danger zone farther west :(
