News DetailHistoric tornado outbreak yesterday

At least 35 tornadoes have been reported yesterday from Southwest Missouri to as far north Southeast Wisconsin as several long-track tornadic supercells moved rapidly northeastward at 50+ mph across the region. Most of these tornado reports were associated with two supercells: one that developed in northern IL and moved across extreme Southeast WI, and a second that traversed Southwest MO along the I-44 corridor. Sadly, two fatalities have been reported in Greene County, MO near the town of Stafford, where several homes were destroyed.

The radar loop of the Southwest MO supercells from 2300 to 0030 UTC is shown below, along with a picture of the tornado from Kevin Sligar, a resident of Monett, MO, who shot this picture with his cell phone. Several storm chasers were also tracking this damaging tornado, including Lanny Dean and Brandon Lawson. This was definitely an unusual day for early January, with upper 50 dewpoints surging as far north as Lower Michigan. I ended up chasing a tornado-warned cell in Muskegon County, Michigan with snow banks remaining in spots from a series of winter storms over the Holidays. 2008 will definitely be an active here if January 7 is any sign of things to come. Stay tuned for more information regarding yesterday's historic tornado event.

heres some pics of the wheatland wi tornado http://media.myfoxmilwaukee.com/weather/jan7pix/index.html
the tornado must of just missed where we lived its as tho it went right between us im in Burlington wi
Wow yeah i noticed there are still some warnings in MO. I am curious to see how many tornado reports are talllied considering that there were probably 75 plus warnings i saw after sunset.
Seemed alot like what happened back in Oct. I thought the surface temps would need to be warmer but I guess not.
The last 10 hours have just been obsurd. Living in Springfield, MO we do see tornado warnings, but almost 10 hours straight is insane. It looks like it's starting to slow down now, but the straightline winds that just came through were enough to make me shudder.
Hey Reed, are ya planning on chasing today if anything like yesterday occurs. Im planning to if anything occurs reasonably close to me here in East TN. I havent seen a tornado since April 98. I was on a 8th grade field trip when that outbreak occured.
Why arent you guys out chasing the record outbreak of tornado's? Seems you would want to get some fottage ina time when tornados arent as common right?
I know i would love to see some fresh tornado fottage from you guys.. Itusually pops up saying when you guys are in the field chasing, but nothing..
Being in maryland puts an effective damper on things.
Thats the shitty part of being in the army. the one time I REALLY want to be out there and at least seeing this stuff, whom,"Yer goin to maryland out by the ocean where you just have to worry about the stray tropical system rargh!" and such.
So yeah, get some good pictures maybe a video or 2 for me guys
lol, hey look, another Jake ;P
New MD out in Arkansas? already?
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0028.html
Interesting.
Heidi, I think that newest MD is for you.
Yeah, I think so, they've also got several severe t-storm warnings out now too. It's already shaping up to be an active day lol
Somebody said that there was a tornado watch out for Southern Ontario last night just wondering what counties the warning was in. If anybody remembers
Matt, I'm not sure of the county names, but they were around Windsor.
Alright thanks Strike Thanks about 5 hours from me so i didnt miss much. But there is a huge storm coming my way. Its nothing severe i dont think but there could be heavy rain with some strong winds.
its for me to strike- i live right in central arkansas- just need to get some coffee down and i'll be ready
Yeah, I just got up and around, and there is a cell coming toward me. If it produces it will be very weak, but there is rotation. I am thinking about setting up somewhere where I can see so I can catch anything that might drop. Oh, our Chief Met. taught me a new official weather term last Friday - methnado! It's something akin to a sheriffnado only, well, you know!
I guess there might be a tornado watch out for us soon. I think the show is basically over here - temp is down to 54, humidity is 99%, so like I said, this isn't really a huge deal. Our surface winds are basically zero right now, too.
I think I am going to head out now - hopefully I'll be back in an hr or so with something SPECTACULAR!
TVS! I'm seeing a TVS in AR just north of Russellville, lol at 8:30 AM no less!
Good luck Heidi and Donny. Get us some cool pics.

thats my county-pulaski- but not my side under the tornado warning
Yeah, that's another one I've been watching, I'm still waiting for that one up near Ash Flat to develope, it looked good there for a few minutes.
it probably will shortly
Ok, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, the next TW storm will be the one to the west of Nashville (AR that is)
i would say indepence county
Heidi, please be careful when you're out there. There is a 30 % (moderate) risk of strong to violent Tornadoes within the Tornado Watch 8 area.
Check out the velocity on the southern warned storm. I think it might be on the ground.
Not anymore, downgraded to a svr t-storm :/
My guarantee record is still 100% sterling!
Corey, refresh my memory... What was your guarantee again?
Can somone tell me what 3DC shr is, and what it does? I can't seem to figure this one out on my own.
I've been watching the what I call "lawn trash cells" in Arkansas and Oklahoma for four hours, and it's like they've been sitting there, waiting for any excuse to become something much more dangerous than "lawn trash." I thought the morning sun might help provide as good of an excuse as any ... is that the element that pushed them over the limit?
Heidi, you should be back AAAAAing and all that by now, don't make me worry about you for too long. Everyone stay safe.
Def. the most peculiar January weather I've ever seen. I'm in Chicago and though we didn't see any tornados there was just this abundance of cloud to ground lightning strikes. Just one right after another for probably a half hour.
-Jake
I think it's a type of symbol used on a weather plotting device from the search I just made (turned up on "3D SHR" at the NOAA website). What context is the term you used in?
I'm trying out the GR3 software, and it shows up at times like the Meso tags, but orange, I just didn't know what it was, or how it worked.
I'm back.
These storms looked like pure crap when I left- for those of you with GR3, go to the Little ROck site, click on "polling" (it's the thing up in the left-hand corner that looks like a stack of papers). Find Izard Co., go just south of Franklin, and watch what happened. There was DEFINITELY low-level rotation, with a decent base. It was cool to see that confirmed when I got home.
I ended up driving through a precip core which was not cool. No hail.
Reed & Joel - I drove down the same stretch of road you guys were on Sept '06 when you caught the tornado near Myron. I had to stop for a while at a church just before the place where you finally got the hose because I wasn't sure what was happening behind me. Just to my south there was an area that looked like it could produce.
I finally gave up and came home when I was a couple miles from Ash Flat. As we know, storm motion is INCREDIBLE. There was no way I was going to be able to catch up, and I couldn't get close enough for a good photo if there was a tornado anyway.
If I'd have had a video camera, I'd have had some nice footage of that rotating base. Very clearly visible low-level clouds to my west were moving rapidly south - closer to me, very clearly visible clouds moving rapidly north.
My husband is in Mt. Pleasant AR right now, and that's where the that severe warned cell that was tornado warned in Van Buren Co. is headed.
I saved some screen shots on GR3 after I set polling -
Here's what it looked like when I left:
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/izardcocr248first.png
Here's what was happening when I saw the low-level rotation:
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/izardcocr248.png
And here's what was going on when I stopped at the church.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/izardcocr248between.png
I might be about to go back out. I was without coffee the first time, and I'm downing it now!
Oh, another thing I noticed when i was out before - as the storm got closer, I could feel it getting warm! It was 53-54 when I left, and it's 60 now!
Wb Heidi! Where is your location? There is a pretty intensive hail cell (65 dBz/ top at 12km) near Arkadelphia.
Izard Co (north-central part of the state), near Franklin.
I'm about to go again.
Nice Heidi, that was the cell I was watching I think. It never did develope much, I'm glad to know it was rotating though lol
Latest Day 1 forecast out know. Tornado risk at 10% now:
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
-Heidi
Glad to see you back, be careful out there.
When you get back (again) can you do me a favor with this:
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/izardcocr248between.png
... and put in a brief spot via photoshop or mspaint showing where the rotation is? It's hard for me to see the hook echo, which I guess might not even necessarily exist ... are these HPcells?
I'm beginning to like the look of that mini squall line north of Little Rock, I see 4 Meso tags lol
go heidi! go heidi! ;)
GO HEIDI!! be safe out there. Let us know if you need any data.
-Volker
I wish they'd man up and call this a mod risk. I certainly both respect and depend (very much right now before having purchased yet any forecasting tools) on their opinions but since Darrow's first discussion of this situation Friday stuff's been too carefully discussed.
Retroactively by their definitions yesterday Mizzou should have been a high risk area. Scary.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*sighs* i was going to intercept but there going everywhere but into9 jacksonville
poor Heidi, I hate cleaning up after animals :/
from what I'm seeing, there isn't much going on, just thunderstorms, not really that severe yet.
Looks like they are dying off for now.
Good, Maybe I can get some work done around here now. This tornado thing is very distracting.
TVS east of Sheridan!
One person killed in Van Buren Co. tornado:
http://www.katv.com/
Yeah I heard, I guess that's decent compaird to the number of tornadoe's, 3 deaths for 35+ tornado's is a fairly good number right?
yeah its decent jake- but really you hate to see 1 death really
Donny, how are things looking down there?
Jake, well, of course ideally you'd like to see zero fatalities, but especially in rural areas with lots of mobile homes and people who aren't paying 100% attention to what is going on and what they should and shouldn't be doing ... all of that translates to a situation that makes it very difficult for there to ever really be zero fatalities. Even though that's the goal and the point of warnings ... Ultimately people are always going to be responsible for the situations they put themselves in, whether by ignorance or even arrogance ... and even then, there are always cases where people did everything they could and should have done, and the storm was too much. Anyway, just some musing ... it is always frustrating when you hear that the people killed from storms were the ones who didn't get out of their mobile homes. Time after time!
Yeah I know, but it's kinda to be expected with this kind of outbreak. I would have expected more at first, epspecially with that many tornados reprted.
Yeah, makes me feel kind of bad for wanting these storms so much :(
we got missed in jackosnville heidi- ha some loud thunder- but that was it- and then it blew up east of here- and turned severe east of here- and looks like B-6 is turning supercellular
Is this supposed to fire up again later? because right now it's looking kind of dead :/
I understand what you're saying, Jake. Yesterday was one of those days that is very sobering. I get excited and all AAAAAAAA because I just want to see that ONE STORM that's terrific. I've seen several in that category since I've been living here but just didn't have my act together to get any photos or any other footage, let alone chase them. This past calendar year was the first time that I've really had most of my "act" together (with the exception of video!), and there were no good storms here, and especially none that were really chasable. Then, when something like yesterday happens in MO, and I realize that the models were for the last week+ showing that basically over us and *that* (meaning the outbreak across MO, etc.) is how it worked out in reality, it makes you take a step back and say WHOA! Especially since we don't have a shelter at our house! (We have to drive a mile to the neighbor's, and theirs isn't a modern style shelter!)
I need to get out to the plains this year so I don't have to be always dealing with hills, forests, potholes, and 55 MPH NE storm motion!
REED! What do you think about anything redeveloping behind this line? The sun is out here, the front hasn't reached us yet, there are still some clouds streaming in from the sw, and the temp is still rising (with the humidity holding in the upper 90s)???
My feelings go out to the Tornado victims and to my beloved Buckeyes. Feeling a bit sick this morning its a combo of hops and tacos and another loss in the NC game.
Anyways another record here in Columbus as I have 68 under cloudy skies with a Wind Advisory. Looks like some storms may sneak in here after dark hopefully not tornadic but a t-storm I would take.
Finally starting to heat up a bit more. I missed this mornings action but looks like things are firing back up this afternoon:

I got storm predator. at least the trial for now. I've been learning to use their radars and an upload showed the warning box out. overlaid with velocities, I saw the hook for once.
I'll keep ya updated from my little station here.
Good luck though!
Thank god for half days.
storm is exploding on top of me right now!!!
lol i actually used storm predator for awhile- theres alot i don't like about it- i mean for example the watch box doesnt go on the radar like my radar does- i use storm lab supercharged 4.0
I wanna make sure I'm looking at this radar image right but..it looks like the hook is intensifying along the southwestern edge. a red band appeared with this latest image and the comma is a bit more defined.
Amirite?
Plus, does it look like there is a bow echo from pine bluff to el dorado?

one of my weather spies did see a possible tornado on the ground east of wynee a few ,minutes ago- and i have no reason to argue
Woo! I'm in a Tornado watch! lol, we went from a Tornado being the lowest threat, to being the highest threat.
btw, Welcome Sharron, glad to have you aboard :)
if we only had more daylight id be heading east about 3 hrs right now!!! damn tilt of the earth's axis
Sorry about the first post, I just wanted to make sure I registered right. This is an awesome site. I am a long time reader, and just decided to join. I live just outside Atlanta Ga., amd I would like any help I can get with severe weather. I hate to ramble on and on, but you seem like a great group of folks. I look forward to posting more in the future. Thanks
welcome aboard shannon- and questions you have we'll be happy to answer
Thanks guy's. BTW, it's Shannon , Jake. LOL. Don't worry, I get that all the time.
Hey Shannon.
The stuff you can learn on this site is amazing. I went from knowing nothing about severe weather and 4 months later I've successfully on many occasions been able to prediction were severe thunderstorms and tornadoes will form. And Im sure alot of people here will says the same thing.
Oops. sorry about that, I'm kinda hyper today so I didn't read very carefully lol
yeah i've learned a ton here Shannon. I'm always curious does anyone here study meteorology at school? I know some are younger and older but I was just curious. I am taking the path Reed did and am studying it at OU.
What up Shannon? Nice to have you on the site for sure. Some really good people on this site. Hope you enjoy.
From Columbus Ohio btw....yeah I know the SEC is the best.
My job is intel to be honest. 1 term in the army and then I am taking the G.I.Bill and doing college in OU as well hopefully, This is all considering I actually get accepted there. So look for me to be making that move in october of 09 or so, thats pretty much when I get out of the army.
I intend to study atmospheric sciences with majoring in meteorology. Dunno what kind of job I can get with just army experiance and the college education. Hopefully something that'll keep me in the area and studying severe storms. heck, any kind of weather really.
Lots of tornado warnings in east arkansas, MO bootheel. I just intercepted the gust front - lots of photos. Live stream at

I called the bow echo!
I'm actually proud of myself for catching that one before it fully formed.
WOW thanks for the link Heidi. Looking crazy.
Wowza, the area I used to live in in Kentucky is currently under a tornado watch (north Hardin County). Nothing new as far as that area of KY is concerned, heh, but in the four years I lived there, we never had a tornado watch this early in the year. This is insane!
Hey Matt. Yeah, from what I have read, Reed and the gang are the best around. Nothing better than that Manitoba wedge video. And Ez, I dont go to a school, but if I had it to do over again I would.
Now you gotta realize the big 12 had 4 teams in the top 9 for the final ap poll. SEC had the top 2 though but i think all in all the big 12 and SEC were about even. Dan: OU is challenging for atmospheric sciences. I have trouble but that is because I work, work out, play music and do tons of other things at the same time. If you focus though it's not too bad.
Yeah gerb131, I was hoping that would have been a better game. I am a die hard Georgia fan, and it seems like it is always Wait till next year for us. Maybe we will get to play OSU next year.
Hey guys wish me luck I'me almost in a tornado watch. also herd there was a tornado emegrgancy in springfelid yesterday!
To EZ
I managed to survive basic, pennsacola florida, korea and a term in iraq, I'll be fine with a little college in all honesty. The intel school was the hardest school I had ever done. So I feel I will do fine. Thanks for the heads up though.
yeah there was a tornado emergency in springfield caleb good luck and stay safe
It hurts more than one could imagine. My bro and dad live in Alabama and are big Buckeye fans and they are going to have to hear it for another year.
Georgia is good and should be in the mix next year 4sho, they got jobbed playing Hawaii this year.
Matt, I went to tOSU but like 5 people died in my family in 2.5 years and I'm 6hrs short of my Bachelors for now I work at ServiceMaster cleaning carpets and stripping floors pays well but not what I want to be doing.
Is it just my Radar, or does it look like there's another line building up behind the first one?
Yeah nothing here yet but I am under a wind advsory... that makes a bigger chance of a tornado! If I get anything at all I'll TRY to take pis
DAN: yeah i'm sure you'll be good because you obviously have enough discipline and drive and that's all it takes to do anything.
lol, I've had my camera ready since 7 AM this morning, I made sure to get up just as they put out the Day 1 outlook hehe.

Have I been back to say that I intercepted the gust front? That's the second line you guys were able to see on radar, behind the one with all the tornado warnings. It was pretty cool. I really like gust fronts. Our temp is down into the 40s now.
Oh, nice photos Donny. I saw some pileus clouds capping the gust front, too!
