News DetailDamaging tornado in Racine, WI!

At least 8 tornadoes have been reported already today across central MO, northern IL, and southern WI, with one particularly damaging tornado in extreme southeast WI near the town of Racine, WI around 2230 UTC. Two simultaneous tornadoes were reported 3 miles northwest of Kenosha, WI right along the western Lake Michigan Shoreline! Other very impressive tornadic supercells were ongoing in northeast MO and southwest MO as of 2330 UTC, with the latter storm looking absolutely incredible on reflectivity and velocity. Damaging tornadoes are likely with any of these storms as they track rapidly northeastward at over 50 mph. Radar loops showing both of these storms are shown below:

Below are the initial SPC storm reports as of 5:30 pm CST. Luckily so far, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities with any of these storms. In hindsight, we definitely should have been chasing this event, but I definitely didn't see the southeast WI storm happening. I wonder when the last tornado occurred in Wisconsin in January??

Aawww, it had to do damage, dangit! At least there hasn't been any injuries, that's fortunate.
Here is a live feed from the milwaukee fox affiliate.

The cell is about to come onshore in michigan. We're going to go after it if it holds together. Dewpoints in the mid to upper 50s here in January is insane!
ummm...........another tornado warning for racine
I said this on the last thread, but:
I bet Ben is right in the thick of this stuff ...
http://www.week.com/news/local/13508307.html
INCREDIBLE couplet on the storm in extreme southwest MO right now. It looks like MO could be in for a massive tornado outbreak tonight. Supercells are going up everywhere.
Here we go again... I really have to eat, be back later.
Well my dad couldn't get out of work, and I thought it didn't look too good, but my target was far NE Oklahoma and it sure did initiate some crazy storms. I can't believe what is happening!! All I can say is get ready for a CRAZY tornado season!!! Could we be seeing 1999 all over again?
I agree this is gonna be a long night. Incredible tornado in that picture from the link from Heidi. Now a Tornado Warning for Muskegon Co. Michigan
i hope not michael but i have my phone charged in case i need to make calls
pardon me saying this- but why the f isn't there a moderate risk out within part of this warm sector
REED UR IN GRAND RAPIDS RIGHT?!?! you better get storm chasing =P
Jan. 24 1967 was the last time a tornado was in Wisconsin in the month of Jan. Vince on this mentioned it http://media.myfoxmilwaukee.com/live/index.html
and Wheaton, MO looks like or is about to get hit hard. that storm is still showing TVS
WOW! Supercells are going up like crazy in MO!!!
This is sooo going to be a long night... To bad I have school tomorrow:(
lol, we have an essay due tommorrow in compostion class and its called the "historical paper" so im writing about the Greensburg tornado and im going to play as a torando chase :)
Reed! I know where you are. Why didn't you pick me up? I would have gone with. My Mom just made cookies, and could have brought them to sustain. Do you see rotation?
I told Cortney these were tornado conditions at 1:30 and she said no no not till the cold front moves in tomorrow. Well it's here isn't it. Darn! Drive Safe it's really dark. The pot holes are bad here!
This did NOT work out as expected ... AAAAAAAA!!! I can't take it!
Springfield is going to get nailed again and again, practically right over the radar site!
This was SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stupid GFS, WRF, NAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
76kts to 106 kts TVS on that storm that just passed Springfield (sorry people, I don't know how that's supposed to be written, but you know what I mean hopefully)

Reed just left his dinner on the table and rushed out with all his equipment in his new car! The new vehicle even has a sunroof to photograph from. He said he should have the tracker up and running soon. I hope he drives carefully! This weather is insane for this time of year here - I do not remember warm temps like this ever in Jan.
Storm Chaser Chris Wilburn reported seeing a strong tornado near Monet, MO, it uprooted whole trees. They are currently watching a large lowering on the second storm that is heading for Springfield again!
Reed just called and is heading north on 131 to intercept the storm in northern Kent County. He is currently seeing lots of lightning.
Stupid customer interrupted me. This is insane!
NW of Marshfield is a nice hook and a TVS on GR.
Does anyone know if there is a snowpack around any of these tornadoes?
To think I had everything to go to night-watch northern Missou, but FOG
FOG!!!
FOG!?!?!?! keeping me home. ARRGH. Divine intervention telling me I probably shouldn't night-watch this early, I guess...
Good luck to everyone.
Reed! Where the heck are you guys?! Dear god I'm looking at this cell out northwest of springfield missouri and it is nuts! this hook echo is astonishing! Please tell me you guys are at least following this beast. This is intense, so you guys better have something on it to make up for your wayward army buddy.
Yeah, and there is 1.25" hail on that storm with Reed's new sun roof! AAAAAA!!!!!!
New MD just posted. PDS watch may be needed!
Now I have to drive home and hope I don't miss anything.
Looks like I missed out on a good day!! =( How's everyone?? Tornadoes in Cheeseland in Jan. Hmm... Crazy stuff!!
One more thing.
Tahlequah OK 3.5 inch hail!
Springfield missouri is getting hit hard with tornadoes
Man Reed you should be out chasing this storm in springfield
Yes Heidi, i was in the thick of things, It was awesome, and it almost happened, Unfortunatly i did not see any tornados today. I saw a 3 funnel clouds. This was kind of tricky, but ideal. I saw this storm way back in NE MO, and thought, "In 2-3 hours that will be here and tornado warned." I kept intently monitoring the storm as it came closer and closer only severe storm warned. As it was 45 minutes away from here, i began to notice, a little bit of notch, and rotation forming, and took off... I traveled for about 20 minutes south, and got off the Interstate, at that point i was able to see 2-3 spots of rotation, and a few funnels, i was to far out to tell if one of them touched down, but i was a bit far out still.
I continued manuervering and was closing to within 1-2 miles of the rotation and got hit with some sort of flanking wind because it went from 20-30mph...to 75-80mph, i soon lost sight of the rotation, and was pummeled by 60-70mph winds, and dime sized hail.
Damn Road network...this storm kinda ran straight to me, but at the same time, it ran the way i didnt want it to once i was on it, in to a Low Lying river valley, with nothing but dirt roads, and mainly N/S Roads. Oh well this was exciting.
Hey Reed you might run to Severe studios Ben Holcomb up there, Hes on the same storm.
And from the models, am i seeing i could have some more potential severe/tornadic weather overnight?
TWC just said there were 17 confirmed tornadoes in the US today. The national average for tornadoes in January is 42. We're almost at the halfway point, in the first week! AAAHH!! Good job to all the chasers and spotters out there today, you saved some lives I bet.
Reed's storm has a TVS but no tornado warning ...
Brady - AAAAAAAA!!!
There's a pretty big bow-echo setting up in IL ... not to say derecho, but who knows?
I think this is the longest line of sups I have ever seen.
I was going to say earlier that this set-up was reminding me of back in March 06 when MO got nailed pretty back,. but that was when I was thinking this was going to turn into a big squall line, and not 23985 supercells. WHOA!!!
new meso discussion out from the spc- pds tornado watch likely soon across southeastner missouri and western illonois

Tyler Coastani and Chris Rice are on that storm. They are both stopped on SR 125, they might be getting awesome video footage
wow! i just got done writing the essay on the greensburg tornado and now i hear springfeild is getting hammered??!?!
Yeah, this is one of those chilling kinds of feelings where I am having to remember that I don't LIKE the feeling of being chased BY a tornado! This could have been a very different kind of day for Arkansas, that's for sure.
This is OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!! I still haven't been able to catch up with all the PDS stuff - haven't even seen it yet?!?!!!
Oh, here it comes - I said I'd do it, and even though it isn't happening here (yet?):
(ahem)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brady:
Springfield, MO
yeah, they've had what... 3 or 4 TWd cells go over, and now they're in at least 2 more TWs, it's insane!
You know if the sun would set at 8:30 right now I would be in perfect position tailing these cells ne into MO!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Guys, I'm watching these cells to the SW of OKC, they are strong storms, and just under severe levels. A tornado in OKC too!!!!!!!!!!! Oh god I hope not!
*has a sick feeling and worried expression
TY Heidi!! HS!! Look at all the lil red fruit loops!!
Its a Monster!
Its a monster! I dont even have smoothing and i can see that sucker...that Tornado that is just south of stratford has got to be Almost 2 miles wide, i did some measurements and calculated it, so dont hold me to it, but that thing is huge, EASY to see on my NON SMOOTHING pc
East* of Stratford
Where the heck is Caleb?!?!?! :D
Are you kidding me!? 2 Miles! another EF5 maybe?
Ben, I saved the screen shot. I have smoothing.
this is really unexpected.

Zack...I am at my folks in mustang right now which is just a little bit west of OKC. I am watching lightning out the window and the radar looks like there is stuff firing to the SW. This would be the finishing touch to a crazy day...a tornado ripping through okc!
Strafford is just northeast of Springfield MO. Marshfield MO is in the path now. NOT COOL!
heck i live just north of their

Yeah I agree Ez.... Looks like OKC is getting into the action. This is going to be an interesting night.
Lightning just to my SW storms firing all over the metro!
dude97 ... um, do you have a shelter? Be sure you're paying attention to your warnings!
Who else is having trouble keeping up with all of this?!
i havent seen this tornadoes since march of 2006
Yup, I'm haveing tons of trouble, that's why I have a headache ;P
im not in the path of this storm
Holy crap that thing's intense! People living in or around Marshfield should duck now! 2 miles wide? AAAAAAAAAAHH!
Does anyone else think that Strafford Tornado might be rain wrapped?
Jake: Me.
by the looks of it more storm are getting stronger and heading into springfield missouri its going to be a long night
Guys, I know most of the action is around Springfield and such, but OKC seems to be getting into the action. Numerous cells are going up all around the area.
Yeah, I don't mind though, I can use the expirience lol.
Zack -totally agree OK is just getting started in the action
Just waiting and watching here in St. Louis. It's horribly humid still and quite warm. I'm glad I drove up here from dallas yesterday ievening nstead of tonight...I-44 is warned the almost entire way!
That live stream radio is talking about heavy damage in the Springfield area, in case you guys aren't listening to it. It's pretty good coverage (thanks for the link!)

rotation heading straight for Cassville and Exeter MO.
Just got back from chasing the cell up in Montcalm county. We saw a nice base but nothing very organized.
Lanny Dean called and said he saw a strong stovepipe in MO from only 250 yards away! He said the video will be on the weather channel. There is a picture of the tornado at the NBC springfield tv station site.
It's happening in the metro!!!!!!1

Go Lanny :)
I was hoping those guys were on the MO storms.
I can't believe how bad this is. I was SOOO expecting a wide-spread linear event, but this is ridiculous.
Oh man!! this has my heart pumpin and I'm in Minny!!
Good Luck everyone in that area!!
I have no warnings on GR3!! I have the allisonhouse site in it!! hmm...
Brady, I got 10 tor warnings
Wow that Cassville/Exetor, Storm is really wrapping up, and its deffinitly rain wrapped.
Brady I'm having the same problem!!! HELP PLEASE!!!
btw... hi everyone :)
what's the default warning site?? Plz post??
Man, this is nuts! Wish you caught something REED! I have been keeping an eye on the blog and twc all night I will be looking for Lanny's tube. Good luck to everyone chasing!
The SPC has issued another mesoscale discussion saying that central OK may needed to be included in a tornado watch soon. A large insabilty axis sufficient for Severe T-storms is located over central and northern Oklahoma. Given the uncapped environment and deep layer shear isolated tornadoes may develop in this region!
Bentonville, AR is under the gun! That's Wal-Mart Corporate HQ!!!
here is the warnings site:

Brady!!!!! I'm about to cry!!!
But I'm not. Because LSU is beating OSU :)
Still somebody HELP!!!
Uh-Oh, first Fatality reported in Marshfield :(
Thank you Robbie!!! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!
Welcome back to the land of the blogzone and heidi. Will anyone really miss wally worlds hq? lol Joking. I'm really curious to see how this all plays out. I'll be up untill everything dies out for the night. I hope to see a bunch of new posts by the time I get done with my usual army stuff tomorrow (Fort Meade Maryland BTW)
Maybe I'm wrong here, but does the southern part of the line look likes its making a bit of a push north?
If so, OKC is in for it.
This live radio feed is freaking me out!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! I love NWS warnings!
casualties reported!! That's not cool!! My prayers are with ya all!!
Yeah Strike I'm noticing that too
This is not good. This is a scary and rediculous tornado outbreak. Now OKC is in for it HELP!!
They just issued a severe thunderstorm watch that includes the OKC metro area!!!!
The storms at the southern end of the line are just starting to develop south towards me. If I'm lucky I might just get to see my first lightning strikes of 2008.
all these watchs out- 1 is a pds watch- no moderate- what a sad day :(
Thanx Robbie!! paste the site Robbie just posted in your warning settings Connor!! Fresh TVS's popping up everywhere!! I don't even know where to focus on anymore
Good Luck again everyone!!
I dont think were gonna get much in OKC maybe a little hail and wind...
Wow the the storm in IL is turning right hugely...Watch the LOOP!
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?product=NCR&rid=ILX&loop=yes
Its is amazing
i just got bac wat have i missed so far today beside the 3 in rasine
RUC is showing SB cape of over 3000 in NE OK right now. 0 CIN.
I see 14 active tornado warnings! I could be wrong... but I think this is the most I've seen at one time since I came aboard!! Can hardly wait to get on the highway this spring!! Tim and I are gonna kick some ass this year!!
i only see 4 tw on there but lookin at us map on weatherunderground
That cell near/ne of Galena, MO looks like it is cycling. This is going to go over or very close to the same area that has already seen all the damage. If it wasn't for the clouds, I would be able to see the lightning from these storms right now.
I dunno Ez, we are under a severe thunderstorm watch if you haven't noticed already.... Also in the last MD, they said something about increased instabilty between the dryline and the cold front with somewhat enhanced shear. I think a few storms may have the potential to produce around here, but nothing as major as the ones in Rasine and Springield and such....
I'm going to be up all night....Sigh.
i'll start you up some coffee there zack- you want some coffee to heidi? lol i know im fixing to getsome more
Well, we are up to 30 so far people!
Not a bad start to the year.
Oh yeah, I have coffee myself I'm battling this one out to see what happens. Its finally becoming the headline of the night on the weather channel, though I am hating this radar lag time, if anyone knows of a real time dopplar which I can link into please do me the favor of posting it so I can keep a good eye on things myself without having to wait on the lag of NWS radars
ill ask again wat have i missed besides the 3 in rasine any other tornadoes?
The first real outbreak of the year, and I have to get off for my dad... :( Oh well, I got to see some action. Hope no one gets injured tonight!
See you guys later!
TWC just reported 3 fatalities.
Yeah I could definently use some right now Donny lol:P
I'm begining to see what seems to be a squall line developing out in Western OK at this hour. Looks a little similar to the one producing the excessive amounts of Tornado warnings!!!!

man that little county is small i could barely see it
I see, lol I was in the middle of checking another site and never caught the update. Looks like we are getting close to unprecidented first tornado in wisconsin since 1844!
I wonder if we will keep getting tornados, if we do, then lets just say this will be the biggest outbreak in january. period
Yeah, I'd like to know how many tornado's have been out already. (I would check the storm reprts, but thats onlt the reported ones)
36 or so confirmed so far. it'll have to break 127 to break the 1999 record for january. but even then. the tornado in wisconsin alone is something worthy of note. see the above note.
bye my counts its close to 30 now jake it maybe more- liely more- but thats just a rough estimate

Wow, with all these Severe storms/Tornados, it's a mirracle that there has only been 1 confermed fatality, and a handful of minor injuries.
Tornado watch issued for southern Ontario.
WTF is happening?
Thanks for that link to the foxnews local site. The radar data and all the information coming out of all this is phenominal!
theres been 3 confirmed jake - sadly
here is another livestream
http://rlf.ktul.com/weather/247livestream.html
this aint over yet.
According to what I'm hearing that is a rumor and is not yet confermed, it mey very well be true, but so far, only 1 confermed.
large squall line developing west of the OKC viewing area. This line of storms is rapidly intensifying and is just under severe levels... A bow echo is also developing!
On a side note the temp here actually rose to 61 degrees just recently.. The dewpoint is 53 degrees... This is a sign that moisture and instability is increasing in my region which will help feed these storms.
Trying to stay awake here

TES
This has been out for 18 minutes now I think but it has been extended.
thx cors for the second livestream cuz its working on my computer for once
Hmm im watching tornadoes on radar ravage the central US and LSU ravage OSU haha although i hate LSU but it's a pretty good night...Les miles can blow me! I went on a run and was watching frequent lightning on both sides of me with these storms approaching OKC
Could it be the end of days since it has now been confirmed that Nicole Kidman is expecting...(okay, I know it was in poor taste) The kids in SW Mo have to be so freaked out, not being able to sleep in their own beds since this looks to go on for many more hours.
wow pretty nice tornado they showed
Something just occured to me, Where the heck are reed and the others at? Did they go back out or are they watching from their homestations?
Anywho, I hope you guys are as excited as me and so on!
I'm in the process of clearing our closet out. This is slowing down a lot and we're looking at a day-break event, potentially, for AR. I just talked to one of our Mets. and she is concerned. The 12Z RUC shows - brace yourself - 70 knots on the 850 mb winds for pretty much all of AR, 50 on the 925 mb! And this with very high helicity ... As I said, I'm clearing out the closet!
Yeah Ez, these storms are developing squall line characteristics, with a few embedded severe storms in them. Right now winds with this line of storms is in the 50-55mph range with hail aswel... Again JUST UNDER severe levels. OKC looks to be hit in the next hour or so.
dunno if I will be able to stay up that long
reed i know for some reason idk in michigan still but dunno bout rest
Dan, Reed is in Michigan. He chased a storm there tonight that looked decent but did not produce. (9:37 PM tonight, scroll up if you want to see what he said) I don't think Joel is chasing.
Hey guys,
Whats the odds of reintensification after the line gets out past the little rock area? I mean, looking at the air masses, whats the chances of intensification over that airmass? especially with all that flat land.
outbreak in January?
Yet again tornado outbreaks in the middle of the winter.
it means we could be getting ton more in canada this summer. since the heat is already trying to move northward.
It bumps into old man winter and things get cranky
way ahead of ya heidi- my shelter is ready willing and able- dan i am thinking it wont be as widespread of tonight because the upper level support will be well to the north- i think they could re-fire up into westner/central ky into southern ohio
lol this chick on the radio said she was in Walmart when it hit!! lol!! not to laugh at this situation, but the tv.net vets know that can be laughed at!! hehe
u think storm headin for broken arrow will become tornadic cuz i have family there?
I have family in southern ohio. My hometown is there! ARg how I wish I wasnt in the army right about now!
-scoots off to make a phone call-
What do you think about the west part of middle TN? I'd like to get some good stuff out here, I need to get some practice filming/photographing severe weather.
Guys, I have got to get to bed... Got dang school in the morning!
Squall line developing out in western OK with gusty winds small hail and frequent lightning. OKC will eventually get hit by this. BUt again I cant stay up for it:(
See you guys tomorrow and stay safe out there!
it's going to be a close call jake
Storms dying down as they get closer to my area in Southeast Michigan... but still pretty wild to see a tornado watch when 5 days ago we were digging out of a foot of snow.
The storm near Highlandville/Ozark MO looks very nasty. This is UNREAL!!!!!
okay, guess I'll just have to wait and see.
I'm gonna go read for a while but I'll try to be back on at about midnight so I can check the new day 1 outlook, so I'll see you guys then :)
It just occurred to me ...
What is it going to take for a *Moderate Risk* this year? I mean ... I think someone forgot about taking (at least) that step tonight.
Heidi, i agree, and Also 6 Homes Destroyed in Highland...So yea that storms going.
well heidi i don't know- but i am pissed- over 30 tornados today- and 5 of them were strong- violent- 2 tornado emergencys- excuse me for saying this- but do there fingers up there rear saying "duh whats going on" sorry venting there- but i guess they didn't look at EHI values or whatnot
jOnstar!! That beats anything I can add here in Duluth!!
Heidi!! I hope this is a sign of things to come for both/ all of us!! Good luck and be safe tonight!!
Ben, I have the rest of that for ya I'll give ya soon!! I don't know why I lost ya that night, but I do have what ya need to get that to work!!
