Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA!

Here is the second video Dean uploaded from last night and early this morning in Mt. Shasta City, CA when a very heavy snow band was moving in.  The rain/snow line was a little higher than forecast today, resulting in rain/snow mix as the predominate precipitation type, so accumulations in Mt. Shasta were limited to 6-8 inches.  However, 1-3 feet are still possible at Dean's location as the vorticity maximum moves over head and snow levels lower substantially.  Thundersnow is a definite possibility as the cold air aloft moves overhead.

Further south in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, very heavy snow has been falling all day today, with wind gusts of over 100 mph reported at several locations.  As much as 10 feet of snow is even possible at the higher elevations before the storm is over!  The snow drifts resulting from these conditions would be incredible.  Stay tuned for more updates!

UPDATE... 5:51PM PST

Moderate Snow out my window. Eureka, CA radar shows widespread cellular shower and thunderstorm activity moving ashore across NW California. Heavy Snow Warning current for my area... 8-16 inches forecast tonight. Local higher amounts due to convective nature.

With colder air finally filtering in, snow levels will drop and I expect significant accumulations tonight.

I'll be armed with video camera. FREQ updates to come!

I was surprised that there was so much snow on the road in the video. How high are the winds, do you think?

Oh and Reed says: " ... As much as 10 feet of snow is even possible at the higher elevations before the storm is over! The snow drifts resulting from these conditions would be incredible!" - Yeah, I think those are called glaciers. :P

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Reed | January 5, 2008 @ 1:26 AM #

Hey Cors...I haven't heard from James in awhile...he's probably still recovering. I've tried to upload a bunch of videos on liveleak but they keep rejecting my videos! I have no idea what is going on with that site.

I'll give Joel a call and will have an answer to your email tomorrow..

Looks like there is some heavier precip moving in...maybe some thundersnow with some of the convective cells. All hell is about to break loose for Dean.

Monday doesn't look quite as promising as it did before...but Tuesday could be interesting across the Mississippi River valley..haven't analyzed it too closely though.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Cors | January 5, 2008 @ 6:28 AM #

hey reed, i dunno much about liveleak policies but my vids that were accepted were about current events. I guess it has to be news but im sure u knew that. also i think all the vids get checked/watched first before being featured ,which could take some time.

as fun as tracking this blizzard and heavy rain is my but cape values went up again monday/tuesday- and then i looked at helicity- did the ehi formula- things now look promising for tornadic development granted it is still 2-3 days out- but here in jacksonville- were now past the 50 degree dewpoint line

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 5, 2008 @ 12:32 PM #

I'm eagerly awaiting for Dean's next video. This one will be extreme! AAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

Well now the WRF and the GFS and the NAM are all variable on the timing of the system reaching the southern plains/lower MS valley ... *surprise* ... BUT, we do have a day-3 slight risk!

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html

I am surprised that there is no day 4-8 outlook though.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Donny | January 5, 2008 @ 12:43 PM #

i dont see why they dont- bye 18z tuesay- according to the gfs i see up to 1500 j/kg cape- surface based cape mind you then wendnesday- despite cape values under 1000- it still warrants a highlighted area

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By tim Duluth Minnesota | January 5, 2008 @ 1:31 PM #

Brady, it can't stay cold the whole entire Winter-lol, but i don't think this warm wave is gonna last much past Monday though by the looks of it. Could get a bit of snow to freshen the trails up too, one system coming between Monday/Tuesday, the other perhaps later in the week. But, the forecast models have been an ABSOLUTE disaary from model run to model run, so i'm not very confident on what will see this coming week..

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By tim Duluth Minnesota | January 5, 2008 @ 1:32 PM #

WOW, temps in the low 50s ALREADY at Noon in Southwest Minnesota, hmm, i wonder if that's a mistake or if it's actually that warm??

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Jacob | January 5, 2008 @ 1:32 PM #

wow, I'll have to get in touch with my friend who has a house up by Lake Tahoe, bet he'll be having fun up there lol.

on the note of tuesday, how far north could the severe potential go? it would be nice to see some good lightning storms at least up here, I'm getting bored lol.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Dean | January 5, 2008 @ 1:36 PM #

You don't know anything about Mtn Forecast in California Reed you n00b. Stick to Svr and leave it to the professionals in the state.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Donny | January 5, 2008 @ 4:08 PM #

WTF - can kiss Reeds ass....

I hate it when people spam this site... Why don't you just leave us alone you no good loser!

Hey Donny- This morning when I checked models, it looks like the most favorable area for severe weather looks to be in the Mississippi on Tuesday.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Donny | January 5, 2008 @ 4:36 PM #

i know volker- its hard for me to do that when reed invited me to join this forum- i appologize for that

yah im ready for it zack- only problem is- it might not get into central arkansas till dark- so i guess no intercepting for me- but what wories me is that ehi values support tornados into the night- and we don't need that

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Zack | January 5, 2008 @ 4:40 PM #

yeah, Oklahoma ain't getting nothing from this.... Yeah I saw that too Donny. And I hate tornadoes at night.... Scary!

Did I just see Whichita Falls Texas at 80 degrees!!!! Oklahoma city is sitting at 69 degrees!! AAAAAAAAAAAA!
We need cold air.

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By Donny | January 5, 2008 @ 4:55 PM #

well lets just hope the models are wrong zack- then again- models just give you an ideal at what instability your lookin at- it could be more- it could be less- time well tell- i can tell i wont get any sleep monday probably even as loud as i have my noaa weather radios- but i am out for now- going to take a little bikeride while i can- y'all have a good evening- i shall return later

Another update from Dean in Mt. Shasta City, CA! Comment Posted By WTF | January 5, 2008 @ 11:04 PM #

No, he needs to stay the $%#$ out of California. It's not his forecast area or expertise. Leave it to the professionals. He's a total n00b here in this state. Flatlander idiot.
