Severe Storms and Snow Today!

With a strong cold front passing across the Eastern U.S. on Tuesday, another storm system will soon be making news. This low is ejecting eastward from the Rockies, and phasing up with a developing surface low near the Texas Coast. This could mean severe weather for the Gulf Coast with the possibility of tornadoes. The other side of the low will likely bring snow from Oklahoma to Ohio.
Below is the overall set up with severe weather discussion. Reed will talk more about the snow later this morning:

Note the low in the Texas Panhandle, and the warm front in the Gulf. The warm front is moving northward!
SPC's Day One Outlook has a Slight Risk across the entire Central Gulf Coast:

SPC's Tornado Probability is much higher than I would have thought based on the 0z models:

This highlighted region is a prime location for quick spin ups, as long as the warm sector moves north and doesn't stay offshore! Right now the dew point in Mobile is in the lower 20s! Watching the moisture rebound from the Gulf is truly amazing. The warm front will be the major issue to watch this afternoon/evening.

This is the forecast sounding for Mobile, AL valid at 0z. The numbers are small, but note the veering of the winds with height, the speed shear (winds increasing in speed with height), and the amount of moisture returning! (The two lines close together indicate a moist atmosphere). According to this forecast sounding, CAPE will barely reach 400 J/kg. But helicity values could be close to 400! That means a moderate to high risk of rotating storm updrafts should exist, as long as the storms are surface based! This will all depend on the location of the warm sector! Most likely, the highest threat for surface based supercells should be south of I-10.

To add even more interest to this event, New Orleans and Mobile are celebrating Mardi Gras! That means tens of thousands people could be outside catching beads, with the threat of severe weather moving in!
Reed will have much more on the snow in the morning! I will be monitoring the potential severe weather through the day from the North Central Gulf Coast.

Yay, maybe a dusting or so for GB, since this is supposed to stay south of here. I think everyone around here is getting tired of the snow and cold, even if this is the Frozen Tundra. Yesterday was very cold and windy, and just about every school district canceled classes yesterday. It's slightly warmer today, the low was -5 and I think supposed to be in the teens.

Well we received about 3" of snow overnight and it's still snowing and blowing. We should get another 1-2" today, and then in the 40's tomorrow to melt it off. Interesting weather this year. We haven't seen this much snow in several years, and it's weird how it is getting hot then freezing cold.....Can't wait for Spring :)

Tomorrow im getting anywhere from 6inches to a foot of snow. Should be fun.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By gerb131 | January 31, 2008 @ 11:05 AM #

Again I sit on the rain/snow line here in Fairfield County Ohio. I will go with 1 or 2 inches of snow changing to rain, then back to snow Friday for another slushy inch. Just once this year I would love to get drilled with 8in or so.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 31, 2008 @ 11:06 AM #

I'm officially under a winter weather advisory for this storm, the county to the east of me, is under a Winter Storm warning. The NWS says 3-7 inches in the wording of the forecast, but the Graphicast shows 4-6 for me, and i'm very close to the 6-8 inch line, playing it safe, i'll call it 5-7 inches.

But does anyone think this low has a chance to swing a more Northerly/Westerly track?(Perhaps bumping my snow totals up. Can someone take a look and give me a second opinion?

Heres my NWS page... http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ilx

I'm the county to the left of Bloomington, And if u click on the middle of the I in Pekin thats very very close to where i am.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 31, 2008 @ 2:26 PM #

Ben, 5-7" appears to be a pretty good bet around ur area, looks like about a 0.50"-0.65" or so of water so fluff that up and it would yield about 5-7" of snow, models have been pretty consistent with the storm track over the past few days, so i don't think it would jog more to the N/W, but ya never know with storms. But, hey that's a pretty decent snowfall

Northern IL into Southern MI is going to get obliterated tonight! I bet we'll see amounts well over a foot from lower michigan into southern Ontario. We should have gone after this one

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By JY | January 31, 2008 @ 8:17 PM #

A very active night here in Mobile. Several Tor and SVR warnings as Heidi mentioned. No confirmed reports, but lots of tree damage and power lines down. There are some isolated storms trying to move in from the south ahead of the line, but at this time of night, doesn't look like anymore tor warnings, but I could be wrong.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By Cors | January 31, 2008 @ 8:29 PM #

Im starting to become conviced something funny is going on with my location..in that last 400days I've had hurricane force winds shelf clouds funnels downbursts hail snow scorcing temps and just about everything else...is it amsterdam or is it climate change??@@!!
wow JY cant believe ur in Mobile, I remember when anderson was reporting from there back in 2005.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By JY | January 31, 2008 @ 8:33 PM #

Mobile is a great place for weather. We usually get a severe weather event once a month, plus we are in the heart of hurricane alley. Two weekends ago, a few areas inland got some snow... but that's extremely rare.

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By Cors | January 31, 2008 @ 8:36 PM #

seems like rare event are becomming more commen by the month...uhh let think...tornado in nyc, snowstorm in iran, 950mb low heading for m. yass. need i go on....
JY can you still see some damage there from Katrina?

Cors, people are still recovering from Katrina. Lots of people still in FEMA trailers. It's bad in S. Mobile County and parts of the MS coast, but we are slowly recovering.

hey btw this may be a bit off topic but: you peeps know about Nataly Hollyway right? well u know some Dutch guy is a suspect...from aruba..(the place we traded NYC for with the Brits) well..our Number 1 crime reporter....HE SOLVED THE CASE...AAAAAA lol im sure foxnews is gonna offer him a job =)

Severe Storms and Snow Today! Comment Posted By Cors | January 31, 2008 @ 8:44 PM #

im sorry I didnt realize you got hurt by it...Its a bit cheesy but i donated $100 to red cross...I felt kinda guilty but I made a case study about this event and there is alot to learn even for the dutch who would point to the fact that they build levees with a 10.000year protection instead of a 30year New Orleans had...we sure as hell never had a monster like katrina over here...
JY if you re interested this video is the best sum up of the whole event ever made:

You did not just say that :-/

Sorry Ben, didn't mean to not comment on that. On GR 3 it looks like it's coming down pretty good right now. I think a big factor will be not just the track itself but how quickly it moves out. I just set GR3 in motion and it does appear as if you're caught in the area where the precip is moving more northwesterly, so I would agree, it sounds like a better chance at accumulation for you.

Another item of note: Our chief just said the words *severe weather* in association with the next system that's set to come through early next week. I am pretty sure this is the farthest-out I've ever seen/heard him talk about severe weather on-air. Usually he just sticks the thunderstorm graphic on that day for the 7-day forecast and says, at most, "we'll have to keep our eye on that..." He's usually very conservative when talking about severe wx because he doesn't want to get people anxious. Interesting ... The temps, dewpoints, winds & CAPE all seem to be pointing toward a legit moderate risk day in there somewhere.

Hey all.

All I hear is snow snow...lol Here its just heat. Weve been hitting record temps here everyday. Looks like the weather is screwed up all around the world. Could this be the day after tomorrow...lol

Where's Donny is he still alive somebody should check and see.

I dont know much but it looks like NC is either gonna get some damaging winds or maybe a tornado today. What do you guys think. Well you all take care.

...MID ATLANTIC COAST STATES...
PRECEDING THE COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE...A COASTAL FRONT IS ALREADY IN
THE PROCESS OF LIFTING INTO THE PIEDMONT...TO THE LEE OF THE
CENTRAL/SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS. THIS IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN INFLUX OF
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE...THOUGH CURRENTLY MOSTLY ABOVE A LINGERING
POTENTIALLY COLD BOUNDARY LAYER. HOWEVER...DURING THE DAYTIME
HOURS...WARMING ASSOCIATED WITH SURFACE HEATING SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO
A MORE CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTENING OFF THE
WESTERN ATLANTIC INTO MUCH OF CENTRAL/EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA AND
VIRGINIA. ALTHOUGH THIS MOISTURE SURGE MAY NOT BE STRONG IN THE
WAKE OF RECENT COLD INTRUSION...AT LEAST MARGINALLY SUFFICIENT
DESTABILIZATION FOR DEEP CONVECTION IS ANTICIPATED.

IN THE PRESENCE OF A SHEARED AND VERY STRONG SOUTHERLY PRE-FRONTAL
MEAN FLOW FIELD...LIKELY WELL IN EXCESS OF 50 KT...DAMAGING WINDS
APPEAR PROBABLE WITH ANY ORGANIZED CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. AND...
STRONG LINEAR FORCING ALONG/AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT MAY BECOME
SUPPORTIVE OF A DEVELOPING SQUALL LINE BY THE AFTERNOON HOURS.
HIGHEST POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS APPEARS TO EXIST NEAR/SHORTLY
AFTER THE PEAK HEATING HOURS ACROSS PARTS OF EASTERN VIRGINIA AND
NORTH CAROLINA. THIS IS WHEN/WHERE EXTREME SHEAR ASSOCIATED WITH
50-60 KT FLOW WITHIN THE LOWEST KILOMETER ABOVE GROUND LEVEL COULD
CONTRIBUTE TO A RISK FOR TORNADOES AS WELL.

We got 2 1/2 more inches of snow last night! YEAH!!!!!!! It looks awesome out there; all the trees are "flocked" - looks very Christmas-cardy :D
