INSANE WEATHER TODAY!!

A powerful cold front is currently surging across the central U.S. as of Tuesday morning, with up to 40 degree temperature drops across the front in the Southern and Central Plains.   An intense low pressure system was moving slowly eastward just south of Hudson Bay, with a secondary low pressure area intensifying rapidly near Eastern IA/Northern IL.  This area of low pressure will intensify to the upper 970s as it moves towards the Great Lakes Region overnight.  A loop of the 12z WRF forecast panels for MSLP is shown below:

The front is particularly strong across Oklahoma, with temperatures near 70 in Southeast OK, plummeting to the low-mid 20s in the OK Panhandle!!  Here in Norman, we've had wind gusts over 50 mph all morning and were without power for an hour so during the most intense winds (I was working on this blog post when the power went out and lost everything!).  Accordingly, high wind warnings and advisories have been issued for much of the Central U.S. in association with this frontal passage.

As the secondary low pressure center intensifies and moves towards the Great Lakes Region, there will be a rather brief period of intense snowfall across eastern IA, northern IL, southern WI, and northern MI, but accumulations will not be that high (3-6 inch range max except in the lake effect snow belts).  The main concern will be blowing snow as winds will be gusting over 50 mph across this region.   The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for eastern IA,  where blowing snow will reduce visibilities to near zero for a period of greater than 3 hours.  Blizzard warning criteria states that the reduced visibilities can be from falling and/or blowing snow.  Blizzard warnings have also been issued for areas along the Lake Superior shoreline in the U.P. of Michigan as well, where the winds will be roaring off the lake with gusts over 60 mph.  Once the low pressure system moves northeastward, the lake effect snow machine will initiate, with over a foot of snow in the favored regions for northwesterly (westerly) flow in the U.P. (western L.P.) of Michigan.

The narrow band of snow that will be partly responsible for the blizzard conditions in eastern IA tonight is currenlty moving across western IA and southern MN, with up to 1 inch/hour snowfall rates and insane wind gusts.  The SPC has issued a mesoscale discussion for this area stating that near blizzard conditions will be possible over the next few hours.

While the winter aspect of this system will steal the show, we can't ignore the possibility of severe weather in the massive warm sector of this system.  60s dewpoints have been advecting northward ahead of the cold front in association with a strong low-level jet, which will generate marginal instability for severe storms.  There will also be a small threat for tornadoes across the Lower Mississippi River Valley given the marginal instability and strong wind shear.  However, there will be a tendency for any storms to rapidly develop linear structures given the orientation of the front relative to the upper-level flow.  The Storm Prediction Center has issued a huge slight risk area over much of the Eastern U.S., with 5% tornado probabilities for the above-mentioned area.  Stay tuned for updates as this crazy weather situation unfolds!

i dont know jake- i mean i just checked some of the temperatures in the moderate risk- and there in the upper 50s- like you said you hope the sky clears up a bit over there- i mean i think central and eastern arkansas should also be included in the moderate risk- here in central- theres been a few breaks in the clouds and that has allowed temps to rise into the upper 60's

Looking like an immediate 30 degree drop once the front passes with a quick burst of snow here in Ohio. Really want to see what happens on Thurs and Fri here it is so close to rain/snow that it could be a good one depending on where the low goes hopefully thru WVA. Bit of rain so far today hoping for the show around 7.

Tornado watch was just posted for western KY, Southern IL, MO and TN

It's snowing west and north of Green Bay, but the temp, which was at 37 at noon CST is starting to drop, now it's 35 and onward on its expected plunge into the minus-zero temps. Wind is also starting to pick up a bit.

MODERATE RISK!?!??!?!!!!!

I'm not kidding - I was walking the dog and saw this line of stuff building to the west, so we hurried home, grabbed the camera & jumped in the truck. THEN I thought, duh, I HAVE to get the anemometer (I have a hand-held Kestrel).

AAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just got back after being at the high grassland/prairie where I usually go to do my photography. LITERALLY, the winds were 20 MPH SUSTAINED with gusts over 30. I got a gust of 33 MPH, the highest I've ever recorded with this machine. My hair is in knots, I have dirt in my eyes, mouth and hair - it was INTENSE!

I had NO IDEA there was even a tornado watch until I got back a minute ago, and the cell I was looking at to the north (in MO) was severe warned.

I think our neighbors might lose the roof on their barn today - no joke! There are pieces of sheet metal flopping all over the place!

It's 73 degrees, too!!!

THEN I found out about the MODERATE RISK! AAAAAA!!! I have to catch up!

I can't imagine what would be happening in NE AR right now if we had decent CAPE! WOW!

The winds are so high that it's driving the humidity down pretty far. It's 73 with 30% humidity. 15 minutes ago it was 45% humidity!

You guys are talking about thunderstorms and i'm dealing with this :P

Wind chill warning for: City of Regina
Issued at 10:23 AM CST TUESDAY 29 JANUARY 2008
EXTREME WIND CHILLS IN THE MINUS FORTIES TODAY AND IN SOME AREAS TONIGHT ALSO. THIS IS A WARNING THAT EXTREME WIND CHILL CONDITIONS ARE IMMINENT OR OCCURRING IN THESE REGIONS. MONITOR WEATHER CONDITIONS..LISTEN FOR UPDATED STATEMENTS.
A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE ALONG THE SASKATCHEWAN-ALBERTA BORDER WILL MOVE SLOWLY EASTWARD TODAY AND TONIGHT. A STRONG NORTHWESTERLY FLOW OF BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR AHEAD OF THE RIDGE IS PRODUCING EXTREME WIND CHILLS OVER MOST OF SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN TODAY. NORTHWEST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 KM/H WITH GUSTS TO 50 COMBINED WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE MINUS THIRTIES ARE GIVING EXTREME WIND CHILL VALUES OF MINUS 47 TO MINUS 52 THIS MORNING. WINDS WILL DIMINISH ACROSS SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN THROUGH THE DAY BEGINNING IN THE WEST AND CONTINUING EASTWARD ACROSS THE PROVINCE. AS A RESULT WIND CHILL VALUES HAVE MODERATED IN THE WEST THIS MORNING AND ARE EXPECTED TO MODERATE IN THE EASTERN AREAS THIS EVENING AS THE WINDS BECOME LIGHT. BEHIND THE RIDGE TONIGHT OVER SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN, WIND CHILLS MAY ONCE AGAIN SNEAK INTO THE MINUS FORTIES AS SOUTHEAST WINDS STRENGTHEN INTO THE 15 TO 20 KM/H RANGE ACCOMPANIED BY TEMPERATURES NEAR MINUS 30.

PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 29, 2008 @ 2:25 PM #

yea skgirl i was sorta surprised to hear that they closed schools Today, i have a hunch that it was due to the icy roads, cuz we had some rain here in the city last night, then it frozed as temps dropped rapidly, so that left a layer of ice on most roads by sun-up, i'm almost certain they didn't close schools Today due to the cold, cuz it's been alot colder than this many times this month and school was still open. Heidi, your very lucky to be dealing with a MOD RISK Today, hope you get something

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By SKgirl | January 29, 2008 @ 2:27 PM #

That's insane Heidi!!! Is that normal for this time of year??

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 29, 2008 @ 2:35 PM #

Looks like there is a line starting to form from central Illinois and reaching into single storms in MO, maybe the ones you saw, Heidi.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Bucky MacGregor | January 29, 2008 @ 2:35 PM #

Cortney, do you think we will have a snow day tomorrow?
What are the temps going to be? Ice? Accumulation? Wind speed? Do you think we can get over to the lake and back in time? Maybe we should pick up ed on the way back just in case.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 29, 2008 @ 2:40 PM #

I am pretty sure that the storm potential is over for where I am located (not 100% sure, but pretty sure). The thing I'll most-likely be able to "get" would be a high-wind recording! MAN it's howing out there! I kind of expect power outages soon, too. I was a little afraid when I was driving home, because there are a lot of big, dead trees along the road and I kept gunning it when I was driving past them.

Oh, and this is NOT a regular event here! :D This is the biggest wind day I've ever seen since I left Arizona (where it was ALWAYS windy!).

I hope we don't have any property damage from this! =-/

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 29, 2008 @ 2:43 PM #

and would you look at that, there could be a severe thunderstorm warning in the same county where a winter storm warning is in effect, the cell that'll move into Livingston County Illinois has a warning on it right now! Man i love big old storms! this is just insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 29, 2008 @ 2:43 PM #

Seriously, there is stuff flying all over the place outside! AAAAAA!!!!!! I need to go take care of things so nothing else blows away! Then I'm going to go record some additional wind speeds. It's getting stronger!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Strike | January 29, 2008 @ 2:44 PM #

Interesting day 1 wording:

INTENSE S/WV TROUGH ATTM CENTRAL PLAINS MOVING RAPIDLY EWD AND WILL
BECOME NEGATIVELY TILTED AS IT CROSSES OH/TN VALLEY EARLY TONIGHT.
POWERFUL POLAR JET MAX WITH SPEEDS OF 100-110KT AT 500MB AND TO
160KT AT 300MB CURRENTLY CROSSING OK REACHES MID MS VALLEY BY 00Z
AND TO APPALACHIANS 12Z WED.

Sounds like an interesting recipe.

By the way, its -1000 here.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Zack | January 29, 2008 @ 2:58 PM #

Lol Heid your gonna have a lot higher wind than that once the front passes through, along with a 30 degree temperature drop.

When the front passed us here in Oklahoma, the winds were SUSTAINED at 40mph, with gusts over 50-60mph at times! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

my baskettball goal and part of my fence blew down.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Darrin | January 29, 2008 @ 3:04 PM #

The temp here in Ames, Iowa has changed (non-net) an incredible eighty degrees here in around sixty hours: 0 to 50, 50 to 20.

My windshield suffered a hairline crack yesterday, and today it's across my entire dash. There's no indication of a rock or something hitting it, and running my finger perpendicular to it (dumb, I know) several times turns up no rough feelings. It's internal and probably due to the temperature swings.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heath | January 29, 2008 @ 3:04 PM #

OHIO needs some CAPE!!! Hopefully we can get some severe storms to pop before the snow comes tonight....WOW! What a powerful JS....

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Darrin | January 29, 2008 @ 3:13 PM #

Whoops, make that a 100 degree swing. Temps dropped again.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 29, 2008 @ 3:37 PM #

It was raining about 5mins ago here, now it's falling as sleet/freezing rain, almost like hail. I imagine with the cold front going over now, won't be long til snow starts to fall in GB.

Weather channel was reporting a few reports of large hail, the winds, and even a few funnel clouds that had been spotted so far in the watch zone.

Hope the power goes on again soon for you and everyone there, Reed. With the way the temps are falling like a brick -can't say lead balloon now because of the MythBusters- it looks to be cold over most of the country over the next few days. Our high today was 40 this morning, but tomorrow it'll be lucky to reach 5.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By caleb | January 29, 2008 @ 3:41 PM #

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 29, 2008 @ 4:03 PM #

jeri, looks like some pretty good snow bands coming into Green Bay, lucky you! You'll prolly get some blizzard conditions This Evening, once that low deepens in Lower Michigan, the Door County area could really get socked This Evening with the snow/blowing/drifting snow! down to 4 below here in Duluth, MN and still falling!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Donny | January 29, 2008 @ 4:16 PM #

hold onto your hats folks its a windy one- as of 5 minutes agao- little rock air force base where i live- 28 mph sustained winds gusting to 61- no that is not a typo and it also went from a toasty 75 to 62 ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh- i guess we got spared severe weather- now if the front would wasn't moving as fast- and we had more cape- well all hell would break loose - also 14,000 people are without power- and mine has been flickering ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By caleb | January 29, 2008 @ 4:29 PM #

WOW Donny! Look at this i'm in a 30% chance of damageing winds!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 29, 2008 @ 4:31 PM #

I am not doubting that a bit, Donny. When the front got here is was INTENSE! I was shooting some video and it got VERY cold in just a few minutes. It went from low-70s at 2:10 or so to 44 right now (3:30!)

There are dead branches down in our yard. Our trails in the woods are going to be a mess. There was stuff blowing EVERYWHERE. My husband said that driving home from school it looked like there had been a volcanic eruption close by because of all the dust and debris in the air!

Oh, and our power went out briefly too!

And now for news from Ontario...

City of Toronto
3:03 PM EST Tuesday 29 January 2008
Wind warning for
City of Toronto continued

Very high winds expected late tonight and Wednesday...

A powerful cold front is now racing toward southern Ontario. The front will reach the Windsor area by midnight..The Toronto and highway 400 corridor around 4 AM..And eastern Ontario around dawn Wednesday.

Behind the cold front a very strong blast of cold Arctic air is expected that will cause the temperature to plummet sharply. Westerly winds with gusts to 90 or 100 km/h are expected with gusts as high as 110 km/h in exposed areas near the Great Lakes...

This should be an interesting next couple of hours...

Take a look at the current warning map for all of Canada...

Don't see that much red very often.

Best of luck to you folks under the moderate risk.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By caleb | January 29, 2008 @ 5:04 PM #

Yeah that's the one I ment that has a small hail core but that is very tornadic damageing winds possable. with the high winds aloft and the uptaft may turn evean mor tornadic!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 29, 2008 @ 5:04 PM #

Not so bad here yet, but west and north of GB where it has already been snowing, they've got a couple inches already. Winds are picking up, now about 10mph with a few gusts up to 20, and are supposed to get even stronger later, as I know many of the people in MN and Canada are saying.

We've already got an inch of new snow on the ground, and that's covering the inch of ice/sleet that fell a couple hours ago. There's already blizzard conditions being reported in Eau Claire and some of the other SW Wis cities.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By caleb | January 29, 2008 @ 5:20 PM #

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 29, 2008 @ 6:16 PM #

Snow is falling heavier now, and the wind is blowing at around 17mph with gusts up to 28mph. Because of that, the visibility is shrinking fast, perhaps maybe half a mile, but less then that when the wind really blows.

There are many reports of vehicle crashes and vehicles going into ditches already because of the ice/snow on the roads. People are being advised not to travel unless they have urgent need to do so.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By AJ | January 29, 2008 @ 6:36 PM #

I have a big problem!!
The only way to get home is to go alone to a city that NEVER plows the roads!!!!
I almost got stuck on Wetaskiwin streets BEFORE the storm and It's will be almost impossibe to get home now without a truck or suv. And using a sedan could be suicide in wetaskiwin.

I wonder if it can call city hall and complain, and even sue them for any damage to the car if I go into wetaskiwin.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 29, 2008 @ 7:11 PM #

That looks like a very bad scene in IN. That's a MAJOR trucking corridor; there are going to be overturned trucks all over the place.

Mike, wow, you do have a problem. Don't get yourself caught! Do you have a cell phone in case you get stuck? :-/

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By AJ | January 29, 2008 @ 7:13 PM #

Dang. That's one big warning. lol. Hold the phone, gotta go eat.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Mike R | January 29, 2008 @ 7:19 PM #

Yes i do have a cell but the nearest frend or family member is 40km away. I'm the only one in my family who lives in Wetaskiwin. The high living cost drove my there. The town's high crime rate and very poor schools(40% fail rate) drive down land values and thus affordable living costs.
It is this decay that allows car lots to offer the lowest prices in the area.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Jake (in TN) | January 29, 2008 @ 7:31 PM #

wow lol, we just had the line go through here... it wasn't too bad, just before they got here, it felt really heavy outside, and the lights started to flicker. and it got here about 3 mins after that. it went like this. Light rain, heavy rain, heavy rain/wind, and heavy rain/ strong wind, All in about 10 miutes max. Now it's dpopped about 8 degres and the wind is 30-40 MPH, gusting to 50-ish... and it's very sold feeling lol.
I'll post what little video I got in a while, hope you like it, it's some of the best I've been able to get from linear storms :)

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 29, 2008 @ 8:18 PM #

Wheeeeeew, just got home from work...did it a bit of spotting for the southern part of my county, as the first severe warned cell of the day fired up, and moved just South of Lincoln, and than trucked into Bloomington IL, Not much Damage to report, other than i seen a blown over outbuilding(however i was not the one who reported it)

The Temperature change was amazing...went from the mid 50's to 28 in 40minutes or so.

Yes Reed the storms today, are flying faster than rockets, i'll say they are supercharged.

Now we are seeing minimal snow accumulation, with mostly horizontal snow falling with winds sustained near 25-30 gusting to 45-50. Havent lost power yet.

*Crosses fingers*

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By MynameisBen. | January 29, 2008 @ 8:37 PM #

Wow Ben, according to that link you gave it's down to 11 degrees there now!

It has finally calmed down here as far as the winds are concerned, but it's 26 degrees! Before too long we'll have a 50 degree difference between our high & low for the day! It's like being in Arizona again!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 29, 2008 @ 11:14 PM #

A few hrs ago I had to pick up my brother from work, if it wasn't the ice and snow on the roads, it was the winds either trying to blow me off the road or make things a total white-out.

We're at a lull in the snowfall, but there's a heavy band almost here which should dump another inch or two until midnight. But the wind is very strong, blowing and drifting the snow all over at about 30mph here with gusts up to 50mph at times. The temperature is at 8, but wind chills are well below zero.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 30, 2008 @ 12:26 AM #

as we approach the Midnight hour CT, the temp is nearing 20 below F here in Duluth with wind chills approaching 50 below F.. Schools are closed Tomorrow here in the city for the 2nd day in a row! Getting 2 days in a row with school closings is VERY rare up in this area.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By jeri | January 30, 2008 @ 1:24 AM #

A blurb just appeared on the local channels, basically saying that travel on the highways is very strongly advised against, esp, if traveling on I-43 between Green Bay and Milwaukee because of icy roads and total white-out conditions. In fact, Manitowoc County police have closed down I-43 to travel in that county. And the snow is still coming down.

Numerous vehicles are being reported in the ditches or in accidents, and the winds are just howling just about all the time now, with one gust occasionally really shaking the building.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 30, 2008 @ 1:29 AM #

wow! Yea Jeri that low is really winding up now, pressures down around 976 mb and still falling! Center of it moving up toward Northern Lower Michigan! What a storm!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Travis | January 30, 2008 @ 3:45 AM #

It got pretty wind here, I expect much wind damage in East TN. Here the winds had gusted up to 60 mph for fairly long periods of time. Yea we had one of them blanket thunderstorm warnings for East TN. Pretty crazy around here if I seen damage when it gets light I should have some photos.

Over 500 schools & businesses closed around West Michigan this morning. I was on my way to work, driving on a sheet of ice the whole way in white out conditions, when I noticed the "no turn on red" sign hanging from a cable & swinging through the lane I was in...about 8 feet from the ground. Fun.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 30, 2008 @ 9:59 AM #

Man, what a system that was! All you guys with your cold & snow and WIND ... I guess now we know (KIND OF) what it was like for all of our friends up north! You MN guys are probably used to this kind of thing, I guess.

I'm a little surprised that there are no wind reports from AR on the SPC storm reports. There should be another 50 or so, I'd say.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 30, 2008 @ 10:53 AM #

No Doubt Heidi! It hasn't even been 24 hours since the could from and we have had a 60 degree temperature change(Between high and low)

And Another Winter Storm Watch for a lot of the same areas hit yesterday.

I am included in this watch, but just as a border county....talking 4-8inches here.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 30, 2008 @ 10:55 AM #

Wow, i'm asleep still...

In the first line i meant "Cold front" not "Could from"

Got pretty nasty here in Ohio last night between 12am and 2am. Lots of rain a quick flash of lighting and wind gust to 64mph which brought down a bunch of trees and a few power poles. I lost power in Fairfield County from 1245 to 8am this morning. Now it is 14 with a wind chill of -4 and winds still gusting to 35. Be intresting to see what happens tomorrow night and Friday around here as Winter Storm Watches cover all of Indiana and Ill.

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Brady from Duluth MN | January 30, 2008 @ 12:39 PM #

Still is only -17f, -34f wind chill!! The ol Dodge barely started, but it did!!

In someways I would say we are kinda used to this cold! It happens several times a year! I would safely say that nobody here can stand this kinda cold though. I hear a lot of people around here say that they like the cooler temps of summer. and of course the snow enthusiasts like me love the low teens to mid 20's for those winter activities! Otherwise I will say this cold SUX!!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Brady from Duluth MN | January 30, 2008 @ 1:06 PM #

Crappy part for me is I have to start moving next week! Found a nice lil 2br with 2car garage that should fit me just nice!! So if I go a couple days and you guys don't hear from me, that's probably why!! It's only a few miles from where I am now, so my wireless internet should work fine there!! but I'll be busy as hell the next week or two!!

INSANE WEATHER TODAY!! Comment Posted By Donny | January 30, 2008 @ 3:23 PM #

i think its because it was non-thunderstorm wind damage heidi- even so i have seen them put up non-thunderstorm related wind damage

Hey guys...oh my word some intense weather came through here last night!! It started out raining and turned to either hail/sleet and then to snow and has been blowing ever since. I heard on the radio this a.m. that over 500 school closings here today. I'm not sure how much more we are supposed to get tonight.
