Near blizzard conditions pounded parts of Alberta, Canada yesterday, with winds gusting over 40 km/hr at times creating near white-out visibility in heavy snow. Around 20 cm of snow fell across southeast Alberta, with significantly higher drifts. For a great synopsis of the even, along with incredible pictures, check out the Boomer Photo blog below:
http://blog.boomerphoto.com/
The meteograms below show the sustained wind, wind gusts, temperature, and wind chill from Edmonton, AB during yesterday morning's winter storm (thanks to P Boomer for providing these!):

The pictures below are also from Edmonton, AB, courtesy of Mike W. and Kenny. The Environment Canada definition for blizzard conditions includes 4 hours of sustained winds of 40 km/hr. According to the meteograms above, yesterday's event in Edmonton did not quite reach blizzard conditions, although there likely were blizzard conditions further southeast across the open prairies.
Blizzard warnings, winter storm warnings, and wind chill warnings are in effect today from Alberta through Manitoba, with blizzard conditions expected in the city of Winnipeg, MB. 8-12 cm of snow are expected with this storm, but the main problem will be from strong winds and brutal wind chill values. The blizzard warning statement for southern Manitoba, including the city of Winnipeg, is shown below:

Anybody see Edmonton's current windchill? -47 C (-53 F)!!!
Kenny must be sure enjoying that numbing cold lol jk.
Yeah heidi, its not hard to get today...Even with wearing gloves to use my cmaera, took me a few mins to get feeling back in my hands
eeire....even with this low approaching, the winds are dropping. They're down to 6 mph now. Anybody know why this happens?
High tomorrow is -44 C with windchill!!
UGHHH I DO NOT want to go back out in this in 20 minutes from nowwww. Anyone want to go to Computer Science for me??
WOWWW it is sooooo much worse out!!! If its still light out when i get back from class I will DEFINITELY go outside to freeze and take a video if its still just as poor blizzard weather...
Nice pics Mike and Kenny, is it cold enough for you?
The wind is finally starting to die off a bit here west of Red Deer, but still -30C(-22F) with windchill of -44(-47F).
Tonight looks wicked cold, not sure if we will get to the -43.6C record.
Nice to see the models have speeded things up a bit and warmth is a bit closer :)
Man that's cold, i really wish that this airmass would moderate somewhat once it hits Minnesota Tuesday, doesn't look like that's gonna happen though
temperature drop of 35 degrees F occurred at Rapid City South Dakota between 1 PM and 4 PM CT Today, temp went from 54 degrees F down to 19 degrees F, and i would suspect that this temp will continue to drop This Evening! Wow!
Hey guys, good job to everyone who contributed! As much as I love the warm temps I've been having the past couple of days, they're going to leave tonite... :( The high for Garden City, KS was 69 today! Tomorrow it's going to drop back down into the 40s, with snow showers possible... grr...
Hey guys wats happening today???

I'm going to watch them right away SKgirl! Anyway, when I was walking home from school I fell lol...I tripped in the snow because theres like 3 feet of snow..
Anyway, where my Bike Chasing partner used to live, in the yard, theres a drift/pile up of snow almost 5 feet high..I took a picture too.
Honestly, that dont look anything near like blizzard conditions, and noone appeared to have trouble getting to school/work...there could be a few reasons for this though...The fact you are in a city, THE CAMERA DOESNT DO JUSTICE(biggest reason?), and i've only seen blizzards from out in the open country, having a plow go by and the road be re-drifted over and nearly unpassable within 15-20min. Still awesome, wish it was here! Could tell you almost frooze in one of those videos. lol.
Where is Mike R and his video.
Anyways, i'm sitting in Central IL, not planning on chasing tomorrow, unless something looks good within 30-40miles, or i have some sort of premonition...but we wont go there. Unless someone asks.
SLGT Risk: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day2otlk.html
I thought, this should have been a highlighted area, a number a times this week, and i think some others may have also.
Yeah, Caleb, I noticed on the Louisville KY site that they are saying a possibility of a strong line of storms to go through KY tomorrow night. I'd rather have the storms then the winter mess we're to get tomorrow night.
Here in Wis, we already have a winter storm warning for tomorrow afternoon into the Wednesday morning, with freezing rain and sleet going over to snow. In addition to the up to 8 inches of snow in the forecast, they are also talking about the expected high sustained winds of 30-45mph which will blow and drift the snow about, making it blizzard-like here.
Major snowfalls crippling China at the moment. Over 200,000 stuck at one train station in southern China and Shanghai has seen it's worst snowfall in over 24 years. Chinese New Year travel period has started, the largest movement of people on the planet. Snow is causing chaos with highways shut, over 24 dead and over 100,000 houses collapsed.
I'll post photos this evening.
...DAMAGE SURVEY RESULTS FOR SUNDAY`S SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS... ...EF0 TORNADO CONFIRMED ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE CITY OF VISALIA... Jeri I don't live in louisville but I might get a seprate cell from the mail line of the storm I may Get a gust front. Damageing winds are the highest porb because high winds aloft may get dragged down by downdrafts. Also those winds aloft and an updraft in the center of the storm may cause brief tornadoes/Spinups or skipping tornadoes. That thret is low. there is another thret is hail the winds just above the freezing line may cause that. then the line of storms may have a little bowecho. The cap will hold it down for a pired of time right then the tornado thret may increase. therefor the storms may travle over 40 miles an hour. because the high winds aloft may push the storm. the anvil of the storm may reach about 10,000 feet the high winds aloft about 20,000 and evean higer over 70 MPH. again those winds may be dragged down by high winds aloft. so those winds may knocked down trees, damage power lines and other damage. as those storms continue to form a surface low is possable to form. yet another line of storms may form. maby not the same charisicks but the stroms assouated with the surface low may cause flooding. another hazzerd with thos storms.
Those videos look just VERY cold, SKgirl! =-O
And WHOA about the China storm! I get so mad when that stuff does not make our news. *shakes head*
Yes Heidi, very cold indeed. Its now -44 C/-47 F with the windchill...if it wasnt that freezing I was going to take another video but it took about 5 minutes to get feeling back in my hands just from walking from the school, so I didnt!
Has anyone seen or herd of this tornado?
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/oun/storms/20030509/
Now its -27 C/-16 F, and feels like -45 C/-49 F!!
Well I am up here in Edmonton, and well...yeah it is so flipping cold outside. Yesterdays snow fall was crazy the visibility inside the city. Winter finally arrived in the good old fashion Canadian sense
It hit the -50s!!!!!!!! now -51 F
brrrrrrr!!!!!!
What do you guys do for heating? By that I mean, how can it keep up? How do you keep the pipes from freezing?!
just turn the furnace up to 75-80 degrees, get a huge heating bill at the end of Winter and hope for the best Heidi-lol.. Usually, will have enuf snow on the ground so when this extreme cold hits, don't really have to worry too much about frozen pipes
I know, Caleb, I used to live in Richmond and got my degree at EKU. But I know that the Louisville radar and website covers that part of the state, and then the eastern part is covered by the Jackson office. Personally I liked the Jackson office more since they tended to put out more adequate warnings for the storms then the Louisville office. I remember one storm in Madison county that was very strong, had big hail and destructive winds, but Louisville didn't issue a warning for it. But as soon as it crossed into Powell Co. -i.e. their coverage area-, it was slapped with a warning.
As I mentioned before, I'd rather have the cool storms then the mess we're to get tomorrow. Already the winds are picking up here, though the temps are still in the mid-30s. By this time tomorrow they'll have dropped about 40 degrees with -30 to -40 wind chills.
Can Anyone tell me why areas to my NW Along the IA/IL are under Blizzard Warnings? I understand we are gonna get snow, they are calling for less than half inch here...and in the Blizzard warning they are calling only for up to one inch. I understand the wind is gonna be blowing immensly...but i dont see it beeing Blizzard conditions, with such light accumulation/snow fall.
www.crh.noaa.gov
ben- In the United States, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as sustained 35 mph (56 km/h) winds which leads to blowing snow and causes visibilities of ¼ mile or less, lasting for at least 3 hours. Temperature is not taken into consideration when issuing a blizzard warning, but the nature of these storms are such that cold air is often present when the other criteria are met.
Ahhh the wind picked up more and its colder!! -29 C/-20 f, 54 km winds, and -48 c/-54 f with that windchilL!!!
Yea...i guess i would say that winds of 30-35 with light snow evn will hamper visibility quicker...new model run for that area showing 1.4-3.5 inches of snow...so, maybe the page just isnt updated.
I knew temperature wasnt involved...i'd heard that before...but its gonna get darn cold.
Ben, there's a secondary wave that's gonna develop and move up along the SEward moving arctic boundary on Tuesday, low looks to pass through Illinois, then up into Eastern Upper Michigan by Tuesday Night. the low will also deepen as it moves NE and will become negatively tilted. It's possible there issuing these warnings based on getting more snow, possibly 3-6" or so in spots from Northern Illinois to Southern/Eastern Wisconsin, Upper Michigan.. The wind alone is gonna be nasty, plus the wind chills, but if more snow falls, then this could really turn into a mess!
roads finally getting better. I sould get the chance to upload my video tomarrow. got some low res(640X490) Pics of after the storm
It's gonna be slick out there!! Good thing I don't even have to drive a mile to work in the morning!! And yes four wheel drive does help on ice, as long as you know how to drive your vehicle!! Be careful tonight!!
Blizzard warning for: City of Regina
Issued at 9:18 PM CST MONDAY 28 JANUARY 2008
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE OVERNIGHT.
SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN IS UNDER A STRONG NORTHWESTERLY FLOW OF BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR WHICH IS PRODUCING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS IN SOME OPEN AREAS THIS EVENING AND IS GIVING EXTREME WIND CHILLS TO ALL AREAS OF SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN TONIGHT. THE WIDESPREAD BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE MAINLY IN THE WASCANA BASIN TONIGHT WHERE NORTHWEST WINDS OF 50 GUSTING TO 70 KM/H ARE EXPECT TO PERSIST UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT. ELSEWHERE NORTHWEST WINDS OF 40 GUSTING TO 60 KM/H COMBINED WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING BELOW MINUS 30 WILL GIVE EXTREME WIND CHILL VALUES LESS THAN MINUS 40 OVERNIGHT AND EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. ALSO, THE STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS WILL GIVE LOCAL BLOWING SNOW WHICH WILL CAUSE REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN OPEN AREAS OF EXTREME SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN THIS EVENING. WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO DIMINISH OVERNIGHT ACROSS SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN BRINGING AN END TO THE BLOWING SNOW. HOWEVER, WITH TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW THE MINUS 30 DEGREE MARK WIND CHILL VALUES WILL REMAIN BELOW MINUS 40 OVERNIGHT ACROSS ALL OF SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN. TEMPERATURES ON TUESDAY WILL BE EXTREMELY COLD WITH DAY TIMES HIGHS EXPECTED NEAR THE MINUS 30 MARK. WINDS WILL BE GENERALLY LIGHT OVER WESTERN AREAS HOWEVER WINDS OF 30 KM/H WILL CONTINUE TO GENERATE EXTREME WIND CHILL VALUES IN THE MID MINUS FORTIES OVER EASTERN AREAS TUESDAY MORNING BEFORE MODERATING SLIGHTLY IN THE AFTERNOON.
PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
Here it is -39C, wind is light windchill around -48.
The forecast for tonight is -42C without the windchill
Only one other time in my life has it been this cold and I'm 21
Strange sounds in the night.
My mom's house sits on a spring and so does the whole street.
The ground is full of cracking, moaning sounds, and there is a 5 foot thick mound of solid ice ON THE STREET that has been growing since december, they have the south side of the street blocked off.
It came to be when more development up hill led to more water problems as well as the amout of sump pumps draining lots of water from the basement.
This house had three of them two are on all the time and one is for "severe rain storms"
Near 0 visibility in Winnipeg, BM! I got some videos which are uploading right now. Crazy out there! I sure love blizzards. :D
OOPs..MB not BM lol
Here are some videos I took..they toodk a beating from the flv encoding when I uploaded them lol.

woohoo that means me yeah time to prepare my camera/camcorder for an intercept- current temp 64 with a dewpoint of 62 - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh unstable woohoo- now for the thousand in attendence- and for the millions watching llllllllllllllllllllllllets get rrrrrrrrrrready to have fun
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Im pretty much on the outskirts of the Slight Risk area. Wow thats pretty good January 29th and I have a slight risk. Thats pretty sweet.
Ill post my opinions were the most poweerful storms will happen.
Central Arkansas is my opinion.
Well how is everyone this morning. The Wind is blowing about 45 mph here in SC Kansas. It is supposed to start snowing in the next half hour. Quite the change from yesterday's high of 68 degree's. This morning it's 22 degrees with a 4 degree wind chill.
Pretty soon Reed is gonna need a blog that says significant snow for Oklahoma Thursday!
Monty thats almost as bad as the time this year when it was 40C one day and the next day it was below frezzing in the morning than later warmed up to about 3 or 4C.
Uh Oh Heidi it looks like southern AR is currently having a Mesoscale Discussion for today :)
MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0102
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0757 AM CST TUE JAN 29 2008
AREAS AFFECTED...CENTRAL/SOUTHERN AR AND NORTHERN LA
CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE
VALID 291357Z - 291530Z
AT LEAST AN ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT SHOULD GRADUALLY INCREASE THIS
MORNING FROM THE ARKLATEX VICINITY ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL/SOUTHERN
AR AND NORTHERN LA. AS SURFACE BASED STORMS BECOME MORE LIKELY...A
WATCH COULD BE NEEDED A BIT LATER THIS MORNING.
lol monty- that discussion includes where i live- and my camera and everythign are ready willing and able
Could be interesting with all the wind. The storms will probably be moving very fast so keep an eye out and good luck. :)
Indeed being a very active day, this has several NWS offices springing to life with the threat of severe weather, and dozens more springing to life with the threat of heavy snow/blizzards/collld temps.
Keep an eye on that book end cell almost directly West of KLZK. Has a Meso, Base = 2400 ft, Low Top, and originally wasnt showing rotation, but now is showing very weak minimal rotation.
Anyways guys im out for a little bit but ill be back later to virtual chase this storms. Gotta love virtual chasing.
oh yeah monty these will be fast movers i can promise you that- and these low clouds are moving so fast theres been a few peaks of sun here- i'll tell you this- im watching my radar frantically
Caleb I remember that tornado! I was in school at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford. That was the first good tornado taken with the MOAR radar. It went right over NEWS 9 in OKC. Gary England (local weather legend) was like ok we'll be right back if we go off. He sent everyone to the shelter and stayed through it. It wasn't a direct hit but it was still pretty intense.
I take a shower and get ready for work and bam...MOD risk!
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
I almost feel jeleous of those of you lucky enough to get the warm temperatures needed to form tornadoes! (well....not for those in the damage path, but you know what I mean...). I'm up here in Regina, SK, and though the snow we saw wasn't much (at least I didn't think so), the recording of lows around -52C/-61.6F with the windchill were, to say the least, a little extreme.
Here is my video of the blizzard in Alberta Sunday.
Hope it is worth the wait.
