Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi

Related Categories: Snow
A potentially damaging ice storm is underway across extreme southeast AR, northeast LA, and central MS, as a shield of moderate freezing rain and sleet is moving through the area.  Of greater concern is an area of heavier precipitation further west into northeast TX.  As this area of heavier precipitation moves over the shallow, sub-freezing airmass at the surface across the ice storm warning area, significant ice accumulations are possible.  The winter storm warning/advisory summary is displayed below:

The regional radar loop for the ice storm zone is shown below, with green coloring indicating rain, and pink indicating mixed precipitation (freezing rain or sleet).   The band of heavier precipitation can be seen upstream moving east of the DFW area in Texas, and the large area of moderate freezing precip can be seen in southern AR.  While there shouldn't be quite enough accumulation for downed trees and power line here, roads will definitely become treacherous, and residents are not very accustomed to this type of weather!

Here's a map of the Arkansas Highway Department's road conditions; most of southern AR has icing on the roads, including around Little Rock. We've yet to see any precip today.

Potential blizzard for late Monday and Tuesday...A large weather
disturbance off the west coast is forecast to move inland over the
weekend. It is expected to produce a significant low pressure
System in Montana on Sunday. The "Montana low" is currently
predicted to track just south of the international border on Monday
and into northwestern Ontario on Tuesday. A swath of snow will
accompany this system with most of it falling over the southern part
of the Prairie provinces. The amount of snow remains uncertain
Though early indications that 5-10 cm will be widespread. The
southernmost part of the Prairies may even see some freezing rain
prior to the snow. In the wake of the low pressure system very
strong and cold winds will blast across the Prairies producing
widespread blowing snow. Depending on the location and
Amount of snowfall, there is potential for widespread blizzard
conditions over the southern prairies. Currently for Manitoba, snow
should spread into the region on Monday with the strong winds
And potential blizzard conditions sweeping through the area
Overnight Monday and for Tuesday.

This is an alert to the potential of a major storm for parts of
Manitoba early next week. A fair bit of uncertainty remains
On its track and intensity. Please monitor Environment Canada's
weather for further updates and potential warnings over the next few
days.

Further details follow in the next regular public forecast
At 4.00 PM CST.

Ahhh, so that's what passed through last night... cool. Heidi, I'm not expert, but I bet it's been a long time since Arkansas has seen weather quite like this! haha

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By sk | January 25, 2008 @ 5:53 PM #

Reed just a heads up...
As Jon just posted a Major Blizzard is forecast to impact the southern prairies and northern plains Monday and Tuesday. I thought you might like to do a "post" on this as it will likely be one of the most major winter storms for the prairies of Canada.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 25, 2008 @ 6:12 PM #

low looks very deep, possibly down around 975 mb early next week! Gonna be alot of wind with it, and should see quite the snow event up in Saskatchewan/Manitoba based on the projected storm track. Still looking for a mix of precip here in Duluth with this storm next Monday, track of the low is too far NW of us to give us a significant snow event..argh!

Hey guys how is everyone?

that looks bad from the radar loop you got on there...

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 25, 2008 @ 6:49 PM #

Sleet and Freezing Rain is causing accidents on Arkansas highways.

Arkansas State Police say one person has died in a weather related accident Friday.
It happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday on I-30. A man in a pick-up truck lost control on a bridge near the Hot Spring and Clark County lines.

Police say 18-year-old Taylor Roark of Sherwood collided head-on with a tractor trailer, and died at the scene. There were no other injuries. Officials say that bridge was covered with ice.

Arkansas State Police also say there have been several weather-related accidents on Interstate 530. We're also hearing about accidents on Interstate 440 and Interstate 430 southbound at I-630.

and you wonder why travel isn't recommended when theres ice

Winter storm watches and weather statemants here in alberta too. The worst thing about the blizzard is the -35C temps behind it.

BLIZZARD!!!

I'll definitely add a post about this tonight. We'll have pictures from Alberta to Manitoba!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 11:36 AM #

You might also want to watch February 1st as well Reed. Looks like Oklahoma might be in for a significant winterstorm. This also appears to be the same storm that Donny is watching for the potential for severe weather...hmmm.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 26, 2008 @ 12:49 PM #

yeah sure is zack- but im kinda confused our local lzk noaa have a 50 percent chance of t-storms monday-but if you look at the namm model and the gfs model- it doesn't even show anything for monday- but it does on tuesday- but it shows tuesday dry- please explain this to me

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Kenny | January 26, 2008 @ 12:58 PM #

Hello everyone! I issued a Winter Storm watch for Alberta. It's on the site. EC doesn't include Edmonton, but I did. Wind's of 30 kph mixed with 5 cm of snow falling, and blowing snow will result in my book a WSW.

On another note, It's my birthday tomorrow!! :D yay!! I get a Snowy cold Wintry birthday!! I'm also getting my new camera tomorrow

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 26, 2008 @ 1:01 PM #

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 1:05 PM #

Well Donny the one I'm looking at is for this comming Friday.... It also shows the potential for severe weather in the gulf states as well... Check out the day 7 SPC outlook. I do see a chance for thunderstorms in your region Donny.... Although it doesn't look two impressive.. I'll check it out just to double check.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 1:10 PM #

I just checked it out, and I don't see anything major happening as far as severe weather goes.

Oklahoma is bound to have a significant snowstorm either this Thursday or Friday... AAAAAAAAAAA!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 26, 2008 @ 1:15 PM #

maybe i just been looking to hard into it zack ya know sometimes i just hype it out to much- theres no doubt on tuesday when the models show the precip- that the winds are jsut incredible- no doubt on that- liek i was telling yuou in yahoo yesterday- it could be a low cape high shear situation

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 1:24 PM #

lol Donny thats ok... Sometimes we ALL tend to overlook models. Hey you never know maybe you know something that I don't, or maybe you might be right? who knows.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 1:33 PM #

Wait a minute.... I think I see what Donny is talking about... I'm freaking out on this snow event for Friday... but when I look at forecasts it shows a chance for snow on Thursday not Friday!....hmmm. something weird is going on!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 26, 2008 @ 1:38 PM #

well i thought it was just me- i guess what maybe happening is that theres some confusion on when the big storm in cali currently will make it's apperacence and thats skrewing up timing

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By AJ | January 26, 2008 @ 1:58 PM #

Hey guys! Like Monty said earlier, it's going to be an awesome weekend in Kansas, with temps in the 60s. I'll be spoiled for warmer temps by the time Monday rolls around. haha.

By the way, Happy Birthday Kenny!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 26, 2008 @ 2:50 PM #

AJ, send those 60s up to Minnesota PLEASE! Will probably only warm into the 20s/30s up here thru Monday, then the next arctic blast comes roaring in the rest of next week!!!!!!ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Kenny | January 26, 2008 @ 2:56 PM #

Thanks guys! AJ I could really use temps in the 60's!! Come Tuesday, our temps are going to be sitting at around -10 or -15F with wind chills of -20 or -25F. Brrr Winter always has its taste on us around Febuary..

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By AJ | January 26, 2008 @ 3:06 PM #

haha. I'll try to get a south wind to send it up there. ;) Unfortunately, this nice spell won't last past Monday, as that CA system is supposed to be here by then, and like Donny said, it'll royally screw up the weather for the central US.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Zack | January 26, 2008 @ 3:14 PM #

60's? how about warm comfy 70's! Thats what we are dealing with this weekend!

However, the warm up appears to be brief, as the next arctic airmass comes down and takes Oklahoma in it's grip. With a snowstorm possible here by Thursday or Friday of next week.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Jon | January 26, 2008 @ 7:39 PM #

The more time that passes, the more confident I get in this blizzard happening! EC currently says upwards of 8 inches of snow, along with strong winds could result in a widespread blizzard. Lucky for me, I don't have to go anywhere that day, so I will definitely be outside in this blizzard with my digital camera Tuesday! :D Hopefully I can get some great pics!

Jon

Yup, it is quiet Brady. You beat me again lol...4.1 F here. Still feels warm compared to last weekend! Tomorrow could get up near 30F here! I'm lookin forward to this warmth before the storm!

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By sk | January 27, 2008 @ 12:25 AM #

Nothing much has changed with the 00Z run of the GFS, still 5-15cm of snow, with up to 20-25cm possible for Southern Manitoba. Winds look to be slightly stronger than previously forecast with 50km/h G 70km/h easily achieved.

I would imagine EC will issue Winter Storm Watches for Saskatchewan tomorrow morning and Manitoba tomorrow night.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Donny | January 27, 2008 @ 12:32 AM #

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By Kenny | January 27, 2008 @ 1:11 AM #

Sooooooo...I got my camera a few hours ago. I just need some snow to film and take pictures of which will happen tomorrow, and then thunderstorms.

Reed make sure to check your email tomorrow, I'll have pictures and video from the nasty "near blizzard" conditions tomorrow. I say about 5-7 cm is possible, along with winds 30 gusting up to 50 kph.

Ice Storm pounding parts of Central Mississippi Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 27, 2008 @ 7:54 AM #

TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR AN INCREASING SEVERE THREAT AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF A WW.

ONGOING THUNDERSTORMS...APPROACHING COASTAL AREAS NEAR/SOUTH OF
MONTEREY...APPEAR TO BE OCCURRING WHERE A MID-LEVEL CYCLONIC
VORTICITY CENTER CONTRIBUTED TO UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION AND
DESTABILIZATION NEAR THE POINT OF OCCLUSION OF A WEAK OFFSHORE
FRONTAL ZONE. AS THE OCCLUDING PROCESS CONTINUES...AND THE
MID-LEVEL CIRCULATION WEAKENS/LIFTS NORTHEASTWARD...THE STORMS
PROBABLY WILL WEAKEN AS THEY SPREAD INLAND DURING THE NEXT FEW
HOURS.

HOWEVER...DEEPENING CONVECTION IS EVIDENT IN AN ARCING BAND
SOUTHWARD ALONG THE FRONTAL ZONE...TO WEST OF POINT CONCEPTION...ON
INTO THE PACIFIC. WHILE MID-LEVEL SUBSIDENCE IN THE DRY SLOT
BETWEEN COUPLED POLAR AND SUBTROPICAL JETS IS LIKELY SUPPRESSING THE
DEVELOPMENT OF STORMS NOW...IT APPEARS A SECONDARY CYCLONIC
VORTICITY CENTER...ROUGHLY 200 MILES SOUTHWEST OF VANDENBERG
AFB...COULD ENHANCE DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE FRONT AS EARLY AS 19-21Z.
THIS APPEARS MOST LIKELY ALONG COASTAL AREAS NEAR/EAST OF SANTA
BARBARA INTO THE OXNARD VICINITY...BEFORE SLOWLY ADVANCING TOWARD
THE LOS ANGELES BASIN LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

BREAKS IN CLOUD COVER ACROSS THIS REGION SHOULD BECOME SUFFICIENT
FOR WEAK BOUNDARY LAYER BASED DESTABILIZATION WITH CAPE ON THE ORDER
OF 500 J/KG. IN THE PRESENCE OF STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR... THE
ENVIRONMENT IS EXPECTED TO BECOME SUPPORTIVE OF ISOLATED SUPERCELLS.
AND...OROGRAPHICALLY BACKED WINDS SOUTHWEST OF THE COASTAL RANGES
MAY ENLARGE LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS SUFFICIENTLY FOR ISOLATED
TORNADOES.

Why won't it let you download GR?? The biggest reason I bought my laptop was having hopes of finding a program like GR to use in my boat when I'm miles out on Lake Superior! I would be lost if it wasn't for GR3!!
