Snowstorm in the Deep South!

Related Categories: Snow
An historic snowstorm will slam parts of the Deep South from Central Alabama through northern Georgia and Carolinas this weekend as an area of low pressure moves slowly ENE along the Gulf Coast.  4-8 inches of snow are likely in the Heavy Snow Warning areas shown in the graphic below in dark blue, with isolated higher amounts possible over the higher terrain.  Travel will be severely impacted in these areas, especially with the lack of any substantial snow removal equipment.

Shown below is a graphicast from NWS Birmingham, indicating the heaviest snow will fall in Montgomery, Auburn, Troy, and surrounding areas, and to the northeast by Saturday night.  If the changeover to snow can occur earlier than forecast, which looks to be occurring, there may even be slightly more than 6 inches of snow in the hardest hit areas.

The WRF is forecasting 0.5 to 1" of water equivalent precipitation south of a Jackson to Birmingham to Atlanta to Raleigh line, which is there the heaviest snow will fall (given cold enough temperatures).  This storm is then forecast to move off the East Coast, but will not impact the Mid-Atlantic northward.  If any residents in these areas happen to capture any good snow photos, we would greatly appreciate it if we could share them on the blog!  If so, please email them to reed@tornadovideos.net with the desired copyright watermark.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 19, 2008 @ 11:53 AM #

I don't know if it is falling as snow or a mix or what, but there is an area on the Alabama/Georgia line with 55 DBZ right now!!!!!!!!

Also, Paul, you asked about the GR software; it is available on what I believe is a 30 day trial and covers the entire US (every NWS doppler station). You can access it from anywhere - Cors uses it in Amsterdam.

Brother says about 1in so far just east of Birmingham. He said it is snowing pretty hard and looks to pick up about 2-3 in or so. Cold here in Ohio with a wind chill advisory for -20 tonight and Sunday.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 19, 2008 @ 11:59 AM #

Southeast of Atlanta is also 55 DBZ!!!

I have a brother who lives in Columbia, SC - they're probably freaking out. EVERYTHING closes down if they get an inch or two of snow! :D

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Zack | January 19, 2008 @ 12:35 PM #

55 DBZ!!!!! AAAAAAAA!

Yeah Donny lol, it is holding steady at 19 degrees! I don't think we are going to warm up at all today! Looks like some snow/ice is possible all next week.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 19, 2008 @ 12:57 PM #

Darn, it looks like those places in the very high DBZ are probably seeing rain and NOT snow. That is, if I am to believe the temps on weather.com!

Oh, and here is a skycam from all over Alabama; some of them have a good amount already.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By tim Duluth MN | January 19, 2008 @ 1:19 PM #

sometimes the radar will look that way with very high dbz's, usually it's bright banding with snow falling aloft, but rain near the surface...But i could be wrong?

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By AJ | January 19, 2008 @ 2:34 PM #

haha. My sister, who lives in South Carolina, called last night rather fretfully because she would have never thought that she could get snowed on out there! It's nuts. It's also rather cold up here in SW Kansas. 24 right now, with light and variable winds.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 19, 2008 @ 3:02 PM #

There is now a SLIGHT RISK for severe wx across central Florida:

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By gerb131 | January 19, 2008 @ 3:36 PM #

Kind of a bust around the Birmingham area with about 1-2.5 in of snow falling. My bro measured 1.5 in Calera looks like between Atl and B-Ham and points south got most of the snow. Atlanta looks like 4 or more which is just insane for them.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 19, 2008 @ 3:48 PM #

At this time I am going to make my very irrational GFS-based forecast and say that ARKANSAS is getting the snowstorm early next weekend (insert Howard Dean-esquq YEE-AHHHHH!!!!!!!!! here). AND, hs anyone seen the precip shown sitting in southern Oregon/northern CalEforNEah next weekend too?!?! Looks like another snowstorm intercept for Dean. How about Crater Lake this time?

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Donny | January 19, 2008 @ 4:36 PM #

lets hope so heidi but not to much cause there stocking my fishing area also next week with rainbows- and on a seperate note- i think a severe t-storm watch would be more appropriate for central florida rather then a tornado watch bye looking at the srv- a-i see no inbound outbound couplets- and b- looking at the composite- i see no embedded supercells in these lines- unless my eyes need checked

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Brady MN | January 19, 2008 @ 7:11 PM #

Why is it when the temp drops below zero, everyone and their brother needs to get their vehicles serviced??? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!! Anyway... How's everyone tonight??? 100

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By greg | January 19, 2008 @ 9:24 PM #

wow thats amazing...anyways sunday night thru tuesday another snow storm for wisconsin 5-7 inches possible but there was a forcast disscussion saying that there could be up to 10 inches!!

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Zack | January 19, 2008 @ 10:26 PM #

Yeah tha is very cold Brady. Thing is, is that I live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. So whenever the temps drop down to the low 20's and teens, we consider that very cold. Lol lucky you Greg, here in Oklahoma we'll be lucky if we saw an inch of snow!! The most recent time that I can remember OKC having more than an inch of snow was back in November of 2006, when we had 8" of snow.

There is a possibility for a few rounds of snow/ice here in the sooner state Monday through Thursday. We'll see how that pans out though.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By caleb | January 19, 2008 @ 10:35 PM #

Yeah it's 13 here in Ky! I think the wind chill is 9

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Zack | January 19, 2008 @ 10:39 PM #

COLD stuff huh Caleb.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Brady MN | January 19, 2008 @ 10:55 PM #

I hear ya Zack, but when it comes summer time everyone around here starts whining about the heat and humidity and it won't even be 80!! I love those hot as hell days!! High teens and low 20's is perfect for this time of year!!

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Donny | January 20, 2008 @ 12:11 AM #

the truth of the matter is- you get the heat- and humidity people complain- you get the cold- people complain- its a lose/lose situation lol

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Brady MN | January 20, 2008 @ 1:19 AM #

I think folks in these parts just like to complain about everything anyway!! I'm always cussing and swearing at work!! hehe
I mentioned in the last blog that seems to still seems to be getting posted it! it's -16.5f ,-33f wind chill at Hermantown MS just a lil over a mile away from me!!

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Wes | January 20, 2008 @ 2:46 AM #

After being out tonight in OKC with it being 22 without the wind chill, I could really go for temps about 75 to 80 and some 65 degree dew points right about now.

Created a new game last night while watching Storms of 2007. We were going drink anyways but I used it as an excuse to watch So2007 again. If they say "tornado" - one drink, "Texas" - 2 drinks, "tornado on the ground" - 3, and "wedge" gets 4 drinks. We only watched a couple chapters and it was getting pretty rough. You have to pause it a lot to stay up with it. March 28th chapter was really rough and we didnt even attempt May 4th or 5th. Only try this with 5% or less or you may end up in the hospital. It helps the SDS.

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By Gentleman Chaser | January 20, 2008 @ 4:01 AM #

LOL, that's hilarious Wes.

Congrats on the documentary guys, it looks amazing!!! That was pretty cool seeing Ken film you guys during the May 4th tornado. I'm not sure you guys could have had a better year to do that either!! What a season you guys had.

It looks like Officer Fred Asparagus sort of approved in a round about way. Don't let him fool you about the "professionalism" part, even the great one has let a few slip. It's just another way to separate themselves from "others" and to maintain their respect for one another and to lick their wounds for the lack of success they've had compared to you.

This website is great, you put a lot of work into it each day and are helping to educate new (and old) chasers who share the same interest we all have, which is very noble of you guys. Maybe Fred should take notes ;-). It certainly takes a lot of dedication to post at least once a day!!!

How many days left until March??? Seems like years away with this cold weather!!! I think you guys need to plan a south of the border chase in late February or Early March and see what tubes look like near Zaragoza.

Hope to see you guys in Pratt in a month or so for "Project Greensburg," those residents still have a long ways to go yet.

PS:, I have no idea what a gentleman chaser is, although I've heard others say it. Maybe on horseback with bird dogs and a Sherlock Holmes style pipe? lol.

Goooood morning everyone!

Man, I know I keep saying this but I can't help it! It's COLD outside. I was just out there and nearly froze....lol.

19 degrees right now, with a windchil of 2 degrees due to the gusty south winds. Suposed to warm up to near 50 degrees, but I still expect a significant windchill due to these winds...ugh! When does spring start again?;)

Snowstorm in the Deep South! Comment Posted By jeri | January 21, 2008 @ 11:57 AM #

Yeah, there's a sort of general depression in the air here in Green Bay today. It was very cold last night, though not as cold as Saturday night. But I'm not really much of a football fan, more into a few other -warmer- sports, so I'm not sharing in the feelings this city is in today.

But it's still cold, low this morning was -8, though it's warming up slightly as the snow approaches NE Wis. I think the forecasts are calling for 5-7 inches of new snow on top of the stuff we already have. On Saturday the temps never broke zero, since the high was -3 with wind chills of -35. It's actually supposed to be warmer this week, with temps from the single digits to the teens.
