I know this happened a few days ago, but I thought I'd post the damage survey map of the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak from the Springfield, MO NWS in case people didn't see it.  The strongest tornado, rated an EF3, was in Laclede County, MO northeast of Springfield.  It appears that this strongest tornado occurred after dark, and was associated with the same storm that produced the Monett, MO tornado earlier that evening (before sunset), which was rated an EF2 -- shown below is video of this tornado from Chris Wilburn and Bart Comstock.

Hi everybody hope I can give comments. This video nice. Just a stipid question why does the funnel at the base of the cload seem like its going bigger and smaller the whole time... Like the site its pretty cool

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By Heidi | January 16, 2008 @ 9:42 AM #

Henri - I think the answer to your question might be that because the funnel is rotating and in a way "stretching" toward the ground at the same time, it ends up varying in size during its life cycle. Every tornado/funnel goes through some process like that, but sometimes it is a lot more obvious than others. :)

That was some very close lightning, too!

Did anyone notice that the debris under the funnel was circulating clockwise (as opposed to the usual counter-clockwise)?

Hi Heidi thanks, it makes sence. lightning was pretty bad. didnt notice the movement of the debris. have a great day all thanks again Heidi

I dont know Heidi it looked like it was rotating counter-clockwise to me but i could be wrong.

Man I have to say that I'm doing pretty good write now. I haven't looked at a weather model in like 10 days. They took or my life during all the snow storms this winter.

welcome henri- so far bye my counts- overall- theres already several EF-3 tornados- there was the one in wisconsin- two in missouri- three in miss. and two in alabama already- pardon this pun- but it looks like to be the year of the EF-3 tornado

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By justin | January 16, 2008 @ 12:10 PM #

that isn't good if we gotten that many ef3 because i would say ef3 is pretty strong and isn't it bit uncommon for that many i thought would be more ef2-0

thats exactely my point justin- thats whats bothering me- with that many strong tornados already whats this spring going to bring- i mean i know its cold in the plains- but we all know with that kind of cold air locked up already- the significant hail threat increases also

Sun is out in Ohio with temps rising to around 40 having trouble melting the 2 or so inches of snow though. Tonight is cloudy with some snow for early morning and then the cold sets in with highs around 10 for Sat and Sun.

skgirl, keep that bitter air up in Saskatchewan PLEASE! But, by the looks of it, the arctic flood gates are opening up and ready to invade Minnesota by Thursday Night. ARGH!

I'm currently monitoring a band of moderate-heavy snow just west of me. The NWS has issued a significant weather advisory stating that heavy snow will cuase travel issues and quick 1-2" accumulations are likely!! AAAAAAAA!

please do that skgirl..lol.. thank you!! Looks like this bitter cold airmass is gonna stick around for a good 4-5 days once it arrives here in Minnesota on Friday. I see 30s below zero for nighttime lows happening this weekend north of Duluth, wind chills possibly down toward 50 below at times!

Hey everyone! I was out of town today, I had to make a run with my dad to Greensburg to deliver a load of ATVs, and on my way home, there was almost zero visibility. I have foot-deep drifts against my house, and only about 2" of actual accumulation. On top of that, it's only 18 degrees with a wind chill of 7. If I feel brave enough, I'll try to get some pics later.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY till 6am CST Thursday.

Snow and freezing rain are causing problems here... About an Inch of snow with Ice forming on roadways....It is still snowing!

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By caleb | January 16, 2008 @ 7:47 PM #

Henri UUUUMMM lets see here the funnel cloud is kinda like funnel in your ketichen You might be confuzed cuse of the tail. the funnel cloud is streching. just like an Ice Skater pulling his or her arms in. as it tightens up it spins faster because it's smaller. but don't think if it gets bigger it's weaker! Yes I know It dose'nt help...

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By Zack | January 16, 2008 @ 8:34 PM #

UPDATE:

light snow, and freezing drizzle continue to fall at this hour. No significant accumulation, however there is a thin coat of Ice/snow mixture on the ground. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6am CST Thursday morning for all the counties up and down the I-35 corridor. Travel problems will likely develop later this evening as the cold air continues to filter in.

Meanwhile, looking at long range models, a significant winter storm could impact the region early next week as ARCTIC air moves into the southern plains. However it is still too early to tell all the details, but I will be home next Monday to document the storm if anything happens ( I'm worried this could be another Ice storm)

I was pretty nervous, so I pulled over and let my dad drive the big company truck the rest of the way home. lol. Maybe next time I'll be more prepared....;)

thanks Donny We dont see that much tornadoes over here we have some amazing " Supercells" But I thing In our History the strongest one we had was a Ef3 and it was on open country. When that storm, I took the picture off went inland, it produced golfball size hail and thats about it. No tornadoes. You have a great night

Looks like N.VA is going see 2-4 inches of snow today. It changed from 1-3 last night before I went to bed. It is cold and cloudy now. I should be use to this, originally from Michigan, but these warmer southern temps spoiled me for the last 14 years.

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By Zack | January 17, 2008 @ 8:25 AM #

SK, was that a tornado cake? Looked like a horizontal chocolate wrapped wedge. I'd guess an EF-2 (enhanced fudge scale).

Oh yeah, sorry to hear about your coach leaving.

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By Heidi | January 17, 2008 @ 10:20 AM #

Henri - those are some awesome photos!

- Nice, Strike! "Enhanced Fudge" scale :D I think my cake might be an EF-4 this weekend, unless I go to brownies, which is definitely an EF-5.

My fam in western MD is about to get clobbered with snow. Maybe one of these days I'll get someone to send me some photos so I can send them on to Reed.

Reed,

I've always like maps myself and am also GIS Specialist for a federal agency. The thing I am very curious is how someones plot the red line on the map? How do they do that ?

Cheers from Las Cruces, New Mexico

Damage survey map from the January 7, 2008 tornado outbreak Comment Posted By MynameisBen | January 17, 2008 @ 11:22 AM #

Robert the National Weather Service sends Damage Survey teams out into the field to survey the damage, while they are in the field, they assess the type/scale of damage, along with measuring the path widths and lengths. While doing this they are able to plot GPS coordinates of the begining-end of the tornado, and also the width. I also believe there is a aerial way of surveying a tornados damage path, but im not sure. Although from flying one of the Damage Paths here in IL, it was clearly evident a strong tornado had moved through, even when flying over Huge corn fields...Some of the corn was completely uprooted, and some was just blown down completly.

Using the GPS Coordinates they are able to transpose there information onto maps.
