Another Nor'Easter heading for New England!

A slow-moving surface low will rapidly intensify just off the coast of New England on Monday, with very heavy snow falling in the deformation zone from Connecticut northeastward through Coastal Maine and the Canadian Maritimes.  The WRF forecast MSLP for 00z tomorrow evening is shown below, along with the watches and warnings across the Eastern U.S.

The winter weather product statement from the NWS office in Gray, ME regarding this winter storm is displayed below.  While official NWS forecast is 4-12 inches across eastern New England, I wouldn't be surprised if there are many reports of greater than a foot of snow because of the slow-moving nature of the system.  This part of New England has been absolutely pounded this year by snow, with over 3 feet reported over most locations during December alone.  If any of the blog participants from this area capture any good photos/video of the snow, please email them to me so I can post them on the blog!

Good, have to say they can have this stuff and hopefully out of the Great Lakes area. It's _still_ snowing in Green Bay, though luckily only flurries. Bad thing is that since it's expected to float above Lake Huron, the low is supposed to rotate more snow into here again tomorrow night and early Wednesday.

It finally gets pushed fully out of the area by next weekend, but then lows will dive into the below-zero temps in time for the Packer game in town.

Justin, I didn't see the water vapor image at the appropriate time, but judging by how things look right now, I would say that the reason you didn't get the snow that was forecast was because of this:

The "force" responsible for bumping the off-shore moisture over onto NJ/NY did not reach you in time. Or, put another way, by the time it DID get there, the moisture was already well north in the Massachusetts/Maine area.

As far as timing goes, the models were off by about 12 hrs. Last night both the GFS and WRF were showing the heaviest amounts of snow occurring between 6PM and midnight in eastern Maine, but they've already received that heavier amount by now.

- I have really been unimpressed (for the most part) by the GFS/WRF's timing and placement of precip. over these last few weeks. I think my plan from now on is to "believe" the wind profiles but let precip placement and timing to the water vapor image.

We've been lucky with these Noreasters in southwestern Connecticut. They were forecasting several inches and we got...a dusting! Which has since melted. Other parts of the state got nailed though.

i am going to agree with heidi on the gfs and wrf- i mean i don't even remember seeing the models put down ant precip over southeast wisconsin on the 7th when those tornados touched down- but heres the current reports of tornados i have and the dates they occured: 01-07-08-71 reports of tornados 01-08-08-15 reports of tornados 01-10-08-35 reports of tornados

We had a lil lake effect the other night! Nothing big, only maybe an inch at the most, but it looked nice!! Still plenty on the ground from December!!
Kinda funny how last December was near record snowfall for the month, now January has had almost no snow at all!!

More like 35" to 38" depending on where exactly you were!
5th snowiest on record!! I'm sure we will get more!! Probably in March again!! hehe Another 4" to 6" would freshen up the trails though!! We could use that!! But I don't see it coming anytime soon!! The models have been so crazy lately I would swear Mickey Mouse was making our forecasts! ( not to offend my weather buddies, you know what I mean though)!!

Hey Everyone!

I'm so happy to day.... It is gonna SNOW on Wednesday into Thursday here!!!! The models are also showing some pretty cold air moving into the southern Plains by Wednesday as well... perfect timing!

Hey Tim... How are ya!

Another Nor'Easter heading for New England! Comment Posted By Heidi | January 14, 2008 @ 5:15 PM #

Okay. I'm back. No speeding, but I did literally almost run out of gas (after putting a couple gallons in at the station, it sputtered a bit when I turned it back on!)

I'm going to try to post my earth-shaking stuff again (I saved it to draft in an email so it would not be lost :P) Here goes ...

Attention classically trained meteorologists:

Can we have an assessment of what is going on with this system from an interpretive standpoint? I don't get it.

The RUC (as of 2:00 PM CST, when this was written) is showing minimal if any convective precip in Maine. Total Precip amounts are unimpressive as well.

The water vapor satellite image is showing the bulk of the precip well off to the NE of Maine, with what looks like only snow showers coming in off the coast.

At the same time, GR3 out of Portland, ME looks like it has pockets of convective precip at this time, just south of Augusta, with a wide area of 35 DBZ and spots of 40 DBZ.

On top of all that, the GFS is now seeming to be (shudder) RIGHT ON based on the report I just got from Marc in Bangor ... 4to 5 inches since 11AM!!
Can anyone make sense of this, or is it impossible?!

I'm about to go pick up my new glasses in a little bit. Maybe that will help.

Wow my NWS office, called and told me the pretty much dont know whats going to happen/going on this morning.

I woke up this morning to snow flurries and light snow showers, with a forecast for lots of cold(sorry dont know the temp), and windy. As i was working i noticed that the snow intensity was picking up, and receding a little bit, at times...It was about this time that a number i was unsure of calls me...And i answer...and hes like "Hey Ben, This is (Not to be Named) from the NWS, and i have you as a CoCoRAHS member, and also a trained spotter? I was like thats correct, At this time i thought he may have been calling about my Storm Reports from the 7th or some post summary thing, Instead he goes, "We have some Echo's showing up on Radar near your location, we were wondering whats your observation?..." I was thinking DUH its light snow! Instead first explained to him i was about 3-4miles North of my Station Location, and he asked what side of town i was on(South side of town)...Anyways he said PLEASE CALL ME BACK IF ANYTHING CHANGES, and about half hour later i was watching the flurries, and i noticed it mix in with some more bigger more Vertical Flakes than Horizontal Flakes...until finally it came down with a quick burst of heavy snow taking visibility down to less than 1/4miles. for 1-2 minutes.

I think it was awesome that CoCoRAHS will actually contact you and stuff, but the way this MET seemed dumbfounded and horrifically concerned about his was weird to me. They were concerned that it would train on the same areas.

I've noted that This was caused by a Convergent Zone located inbetween PIA(Peoria) And BMI(Bloomington), and that also some radar loops really looked like this was a "Lake Effect Snow" Event(much weaker)...which i theorize to be the "River effect", When i mentioned this to the MET He immediate tried to treat me like i was dumb, but i still have my theory. Said a river is to "Narrow" of a body of water. Which made me NOTE: How localized of a event this was....I was at a 4way intersection, and couldnt see 1/4 miles...drove 50-100yards and could see 5+miles in front, looked behind me and could see 1/4 or less.

Another Nor'Easter heading for New England! Comment Posted By Zack | January 14, 2008 @ 7:50 PM #

Yeah tell me about it AJ, we got up to about 56 today...very mild for this tiome of year... Although not unsusual in OK cause we are known for some wild wild weather:P

However, looks like winter is going to take revenge by Wednesday. Looking at the latest models, some very cold air will be dropping southward, with mid 30's as far south as Oklahoma! On top of that a fast moving but vigorous system will arrive possibly producing a bit of snow. Right now 1 to maybe 2" is the best I can do.

I would have to agree with AJ it's been pretty nice here. Snow in the next day or two but probably not too much. Should be around 55 here tomorrow with sunshine but then cool off to around 30 for the next five days or so. The weather has been pretty interesting so far this year.

Hi everyone! How is it going? We've recieved 10 cm of snow today near Montreal and we may have another "snowstorm" for thursday-friday. To bad that all the snow we had since december has melt down (105 cm of snow melting in less than a week...we were "under water") At least it's white again outside and it looks more like winter. I hope we will really have this snowstorm by the end of the week!

I will hard for me to sleep tonight.

Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler
9:41 PM MST Monday 14 January 2008
Wind warning for
Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler continued

Strong winds expected this evening and early Tuesday.

A trough in southwestern Alberta is producing strong winds of 70 gusting to 100 km/h this evening. Winds will drop below warning criteria near midnight as the trough moves further east.

In addition a low pressure system currently over east central Alberta is moving rapidly eastward into Saskatchewan. A cold front associated with the low will drop quickly southward reaching Calgary near midnight and then move into Montana by early Tuesday morning. Strong gusty northwest winds behind the cold front will reach speeds as high as 60 gusting to 90 km/h in many areas as the front moves southward. The strong winds will last only a couple of hours or so in the wake of the cold front. These winds may also combine with fresh snowfall to give reduced visibilities in blowing snow.

Anyways :) We ended up with about a foot all and all. I would like to see marcs pictures too.. Unfourtunetly pictures don't do justice in a heavy storm.
In the time of my first post(3:20pmEST) to about 2hrs after that we recieved about another 4-5. I think that was the heaviest time of the storm for me personally.
Take care everybody.

Thanks Mike. It sure appears to be more of a wind storm now than anything, like they warned about. Its 63 km/h NOT including gusts!! Maybe I'll try for another video before dark...

Hey everyone! Sounds exciting up north there SK. I'm in the running for some snow tonite, and with winds gusts supposedly up to 45 mph, it has the potential for blizzard conditions. I'll keep updating as often as needed. The NWS has issued a blowing snow advisory, so I guess I better keep an eye on it.

Have fun up there! :P

Another Nor'Easter heading for New England! Comment Posted By Zack | January 15, 2008 @ 8:34 PM #

Lol Donny.... I think you might recieve some accumulation....trust me:)

As far as Oklahoma's weather goes, winter makes a brutal return tomorrow. A cold front will bring a mix of Pacific and Canadian air down here with temps dropping into the low 30's. Snow will break out across the state with an inch or two of snow possible. Looks like this cold air will stick around for at least the rest of the month the way it looks right now.
