TornadoVideos.net's footage of the May 4, 2007 Ellis Co, OK tornado and the May 3, 1999 overpass incident will be used on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno this evening. The video will be used to supplement the Twister Sister's appearance on the show, as they talk about their new television series on WeTV. It will be interesting to see how they use the footage -- Hopefully they will at least keep the audio as is this time! Enjoy the show tonight...
I will have to tune in to see that as I don't get the channel the twister sister's are on. I too hope they leave the footage as is......
Is it me or do they use a lot of your footage in their shows?
Also I just saw where it SNOWED in Baghdad, Iraq. They said it was the first time in nearly 60 years that it had happened.

Hi Ben: JY saw a few rotating wall clouds with tornado-warned cells, but nothing close to producing a tornado. She was on the cells near Hattiesburg, MS. Northern MS and AL was the place to be!

I hope that it doesn't end up putting them in an awkward position ... you know, in case the line of questioning/conversation seems to imply that "they were there" when your stuff is being shown on the screen. That would be tough to have to say, "Well, that's not us ..." or whatever. I guess it would be, anyway.
Maybe they (the producers or whomever) will realize that they need to get YOU GUYS on their show, since you're the ones getting the footage for the Discovery Channel show, this one, etc.

I'll be watching and if I'm proven wrong I'll make sure to apologize, but I still worry that someone might use the video in a negative context.
Btw no storms. It was a whole bunch of fog and rain for the most part today. then it suddenly clears up once more. Didnt do any cloud pictures though.

Anyway, I don't have the "Wetv channel or whatever that is... But I hope they leave the footage like it is too. It's in the 60's here in the middle of January ridicilous eh? Goodman in eastern Holmes County is given a preliminary rating of
EF3 with a maximum wind speed of 140 mph. In addition to major home

Hey Great Job on the Leno show Reed!! The only Twister Sisters footage I've seen was I think the Searles MN tornado, when they started loosing there cool in there Suburban!! I wish They could give ya guys a lil more credit!!

Sorry I didn't post yesterday. As Reed mentioned earlier, I saw a few rotating wall clouds thanks to his nowcasting skills. I wish I would have left Mobile earlier to see the action to the north, but I had to stay close enough in case I had to go into work to cover the weather.

With more than half the month left, what do you think the odds are that this month could be a record? and what are your opinions on the 2008 season? do you think it will be a busy one? I hope so! :D

sure susan, there are two types of microbursts.... there are wet microbursts and dry microbursts... They occur when a thunderstorm reaches mature stage, and strong downdraft winds pull the storm apart. Wet microbursts are accompanyed by a breif period of high winds, then heavy rain.
They are also formed when high winds aloft are dragged down by strong downdrafts or RFD. if the winds increase with hight aloft it can creat tornadoes because of the winds with hight! it makes a convective tube-like motion it tilts of an updraft. Zack there is one more Heatbirst they form when the storm dies and the main updraft falls to the ground. It happend during one of the sells during the Elreno storms
No they can form any time during the thunderstorm life cycle. when the microbirst hits the ground and spreads out that's how the winds are created. also dry microbirst USALLY form under cumulownimbus but dry microbirsts can form under severe thunderstorms. plus I said HEATBIRSTS there rare but they can cause just as much as a strong to sanificut tornadoes

Also, apparently the last two years here on the Canadian Prairies have been record breaking! According to EC the records were:
2006- 296 Induvidual Severe Weather Events, I assume as in Watches or warnings issued for severe weather events like tornado warnings, etc...while 2007 there were 410 events! That almost doubles the record from the year before! If that's andy indication, Severe Weather could be a very big concern this year in Tornado Alley, and in the prairies here too! :):):)
I'll explane Heatburst beause WTF dose'ne seem to get it
heat burst is a downdraft of hot and dry air that typically occurs in the evening or overnight hours. A heatburst is much more rare than a severe thunderstorm. Thus, the atmospheric conditions have to be just right for a heat burst to occur. Heat bursts usually happen in the evening or at night after thunderstorms are ending. Thus, a thunderstorm has a vital role. Two other characteristics are that the air must start its descent from fairly high up and the environmental air aloft needs to be very dry. Precipitation falling into very dry air aloft will cause the air to cool through latent heat absorption. If the air is very high aloft and the air is much more dense than the surrounding air then it will accelerate toward the surface. In the case of a heat burst, all the precipitation that cooled the air aloft has been vaporized. Therefore, the precipitation can no longer absorb latent heat. As this dense air accelerates toward the surface it rapidly warms at a dry adiabatic lapse rate compression. What must make a heat burst so rare is that this downdraft must reach extremely high velocities. Velocities must be high enough so that the momentum of the sinking air offsets the fact that it is becoming warmer in temperature and thus less dense than the environmental air it is falling into.
Not only is the air in a heat burst anomalously hot but it is also extremely dry. The extremely high temperatures combined with extremely dry air plus the wind can remove all the moisture out of vegetation. Just like any atmospheric phenomena, heat bursts have differing intensities. The worst heat bursts persist for a significant amount of time and have temperatures that go over 120 F, even in the middle of the night. This extremely hot and dry air can remain in place for several hours before temperatures return to normal.
A microburst occurs through the same process except that the origin of the microburst is not as high aloft as a heatburst. Thus, the microburst is not able to get as much adiabatic compression as a heatburst. Often a microburst will not lose all of it's precipitation before hitting the ground. If precipitation is within sinking air, evaporational cooling will partially offset the adiabatic compressional warming.

actually caleb good question- that for the past few days gfs has been trying to develop a low on the western gulf and treak into souther albama, southwestern georgia and the florida panhandle bye thursday- and should enough instability develop- that could be our next severe weather make- especially in the northeast quadrant of this low there oculd be some tornados

Looks like they are keeping audio in, though I'm not sure they are crediting who filmed the roof lifting off the house video though. Didn't know they had actually gone back to get their degrees in meteorology. Jay is asking them questions, like what is a tornado? and can tornadoes hit major cities?

I didn't see any of our footage on there, but they did have the credit.
Weird...I just talked to the producer about 3 hours before the show and as of then they were using it.
I thought they did a good job with the show...the weather radio deal was huge.

I was disappointed not to see T.V.nets footage on there, but they do their own. I guess I just don't understand why they just aren't pushing thier own product. I did go to the twister sisters website and Mel has some fantastic phots there.
After Waking down and getting some coffee and crunching numbers- that the new tornado outbreak stats look like this- 55 tornados touched down on the 7th, 13 touched down on the 8th and now 32 is the number for the 10th- all in all added up- the count now stands at 100 tornados now
Slept right through the show, but it looks like NBC airs free replays.

Josh, there's a link to the GR products. They're available on trial version. If you're wanting to do the trial, I would probably wait until it's "real" storm season, or for the next event, before downloading it. That way you will really be able to use it in the best kind of real-time situation. That's what I did last year, anyway.

That, is what we like to call a dust devil. The best way to tell? The lack of clouds in the sky. The basic differance is that dust devils are formed by convection from surface heating and air aloft. tornados are a direct result of the meso cyclone and would take more time than I wish to spare to describe it.
I thought that aswell Dan, i wasnt sure though to be honest didnt really know so thanks for letting me know :), still thatsa pretty big dust devil and still for something like that too close for comfort...

In case anyone saw the Packers game tonight, it's a veritable snowstorm! Two inches on the ground now and it's still falling... Think they said it'll let up by morning, but it's getting very snowy again in Green Bay.
Though actually I feel bad for those in SW Wis who had the tornado destroy their homes and now snow is falling on top of the wreckage...
Yeah Tim I've seen that move of the dust devil like 100000 time anyway Dust devils form when hot air near the surface rises quickly through a small pocket of cooler low pressure air above it. If conditions are just right, the air may begin to rotate. As the air rises suddenly, the column of hot air is stretched vertically causing intensification of the spinning effect by the scientific principle conservation of angular momentum
I saw a huge dust devil like that once when I was driving on the interstate through Pueblo, Colorado. It was going through a salvage yard and was doing some real damage - there was stull flying everywhere and it was only maybe 20-30 yards from the roadway!
I did not call the National Weather Service and report it as a tornado, however.

hey guys im all hyper today cuz chance of big storm sound like i will be gettin least 3 in of snow most 10 and this is funny most weather station which are 3 are sayin 3-6. 2 have sayed 5-8 and 2 lol have sayed coating to an in but goin on my prediction i think we will recieve 4-7 in

I don't mean weather.com either. I'm talking noaa.gov and such.
Their forcast discussion, I have been finding, has been a really usefull tool though for the region I'm at, its a little disconcerting to find little personal memes in there such as "I can't believe I got to wear shorts today.." and so on.
But meh, even the weather channel has been like that. Especially morning edition where some guy was using his cell phone right there on air.
I think they canned him for that.
I hope so at least, I thought that was incredibly unproffesional.

Go to the GFS US VIEW, and scroll down on the left-hand side to where it says "SLP/6 hr Precip". Click on the numbers under that (those are 6-hour increments) and see what you think about the amount of precip. ... Then, right under that chunk of stuff you'll see "Sfc T" - That's the "surface temperature." Check that against the same hour as the precip (right now it's the 48 hr. one, or 12Z) and see if you think it'll be liquid or frozen precip. I just looked at it and I think you could see a fair amount of snow, if you want to trust the models!
After that, you can go back to the main page, and check the same kinds of stuff on the WRF, etc. Make sure you click on the "Wintertime: Thickness Data." That will show you the "snow line." (You'll see what I mean.)
