Several discrete tornadic supercells have developed over eastern Louisiana and Mississippi this morning and early afternoon, with over a dozen tornado warnings in effect around the Jackson, MS area. These storms have exhibited very strong low-level rotation, and are likely producing tornadoes at this time. The VAD wind profile from Jackson shows very strong low-level shear, with 40+ knots at 850 mb. The first wind gate just above the surface shows 30 knots out of the South, with surface winds much weaker -- resulting in good speed shear in the near-surface layer. An ENE-ly storm motion is favorable for strong tornadoes with this low-level shear. Check out the radar loop below from Jackson, MS between 11:00 am and noon CST:

Given the strong low-level shear and huge uncapped warm sector, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado Watch for southeast MS, western AL, and central TN. Stay tuned for updates as this tornado outbreak unfolds.

Can't find any live feeds in Miss, Bama will be gettin hammered later. Got my bro on stand by. Looks like us in Ohio could get some action later. Currently 50 here with some sun peeking out.

Video out of Jackson, MS
TY Travis. Miss always getting bad weather.
INSANE couplet north of Jackson...I bet that storm has a strong tornado on the ground!
Thanks for the link Travis... gotta love technology.
This is rain-wrapped, violent tornado territory, here. Hope everyone's paying attention to the weather out there.
no kidding reed- im tracking the one in ATTALA county- i bet that one has a wedge with it
Yall are welcome, wow that couplet is strong. I agree Rees it has to be on the ground

Wow donny, that is a awesome copulet, I hope everyone has taken shelter, i am at work right now, so i dont have gr3, but it looks incredible on the NWS radar also!
ben thats the same storm i have been tracking- OMG this one will be long tracked and continue to be vioent- that i promise
Dual circulations again in southern MS. Looks line two supercells right next to each other near Tylertown.
Hope Tuscaloosa is paying attention its going to get real bad in Bama. Going to blow up all over the place in Bama!!
lets hope so gerb- especially when some of the warning are reading this storm is capable of strong-violent tornados
I got family down there and have warned them. At least these cells in Miss can be watched for some time before Bama.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I go away from the computer for an hour and LOOK WHAT HAPPENS!!!!
I hope JY gets to see a tornado. She's got plenty of chances down there!
as long as some of these tornados don't get rain wrapped heidi
Hello, I thought this was kind of neat, 4 mins of control over a live feed on a tower in Corinth, MS. Very far north of Jackson, but still interesting.
http://www.corinthweather.com/CAM.html
UNBELIEVABLE
STARKVILLE UNDER THE GUN!!! That's Mississippi St. University! Columbia MS too!

(posted already by travis)
Any word on where JY is, Reed?
You guys must have found the live tower cam, Because the que for control is like 10mins, Some dark looking stuff coming in the cam.
JY is now heading for the storms near Hattiesburg, one of which has an incredible hook.
She saw a rotating wall cloud with a tornado-warned cell near Buckatunna, MS, but that cell dissipated shortly thereafter.
ok, I'm back. Ant it's looking like a Bust for me (since I'm not old enough to chase I can't go after them to wait for them to strengthen)
Any chance of something building up behind this one? all I was able to see was rain, and a little lighning lol
Is that a hook by columbus?
Spotter has reported tornado is on the ground heading into Starkville, MS and MS State Univ.
Blake Michaleski has been all over the hook that just rolled over Foxworth and Columbia, MS.
I sure hope that wasn't as bad as it looked on radar.
What a huge nasty mess that is down there :(
Wow, One of those is the storm that just came out of Columbia. Geez, its too bad she wasn't over there a little while ago. I'm very curious to know what was really going on there.
Was just checking out the road system down there..
What a nightmare! There are about 3 straight N/S or E/W roads in the whole state of MS.
Thats gotta make for some tough chasing.
Major hook near Purvis headed to Hattiesburg.
Duck and cover.
PB, not to mention lots and lots of pine trees!
Man this is bad. Right now i got 10 tornado warnings on my GR3. 6 tornado reports so far today and i tell ya more will be on the way.
Hattiesburg looks like its going to get hammered in a few minutes. Need a feed if anyone has one.
Strike Im watching the same storm and the one below it to.
http://www.wapt.com/video/4906971/index.html
That one is still working, Strike. They're in that viewing area.
That cell is starting to look pretty good again
Yep, looks like I was right, it's a bust for me...
I'm so ready to get my lisense so I can go chasing lol
Thanks Heidi, I'm watching that one and was hoping something a little closer to the action since it has moved east.
I just read some stuff about the Jan 1999 outbreak and this is starting to resemble that setup alot.
yeah there looking better allright- and well even though theres tornados over there- there also getting some good rain with it to
Me thinks that there might be a tornado on the ground south of Hattiesburg. But thats just my uneducated guess.
Man Ive never got to chase in the SEast I'm gonna go next time I get the chance!
Tornado Warning in Kentucky should be near Caleb lives I do think so.
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH I'ME UNDER A TORNADO WATCH tornado warnings to my SW Huge rototing SUPERCELL this is not to far from there heading tword me!
Ya that tornado warnings has a TVS on it and its really clost to were Caleb lives.
I think Hattiesburg just took a direct hit, and if there was no tornado on the ground the rotation has/is passing over the town.
Reed update on JY's position? And is she gonna have video footage for us possibly?
Crazy day, and im continuing to watch from here at work
funnel cloud sighted lamar county bama

Woodford county he would tell us what town.
*he wont tell us what town he lives in
There we go thats better.
He is going to lose power i would think from this storm so we probably wont hear from him for a while after this is over.
Versailles KY. SPRINGFELID KY MAY HAVE A TORNADO ON THE GOUND
It looks like you're about to be getting some pretty intense wind, Caleb. Make sure you're not by any windows & all that stuff ...
Carrollton AL now under the gun.
SKY IS GENNIN GREEN not rally windy but it will get that way!
I am led to believe that Caleb has either suck shelter by now, or he may have lost power already, due to the lack of posts from him now.
I see that one Cors. Lots of rotation on the velocity scan.
This guy's maps were right on today. He is posting at talkweather forums, and they linked it up. Most accurate I have seen. Even got the Kentucky action.
http://www.ontarioweatherservice.com/outtw.html
Nah haven't got that yet you think that because I'me keeping my eye on the sky. ONE CO SOUTH OF ME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Caleb meant that the storm is to his west, MOVING east, I'm sure.
I'd like everyone to realize that Caleb's storm is keeping me from going to The Wal-Marts.
AAAAAA!!!
Do you have a basement, Caleb? If you guys use a closet, make sure it is ready to get in NOW - don't wait until the last minute. And make sure you have your pets rounded up before hand, too.
no but I do have a small bathroom that's a big hook but Im going to keep you updated until the warning is over my house. Thanks Heidi
It looks like it is weakening a good bit, at least on the base reflectivity scan. There will probably still be wind though.
Ya Caleb id be in the basement right now if i were you. Either that or he has convinced his dad to go chase with him.
Heidi go to LEX 18 because thats my local news
Caleb this storm might miss you i think. Looks like it making a move to the north but you might see the southern ned of it.
NO I'M UNDER A TORNADO WARNING
You know, I thought that too Matt but the next update put it right back on the same track toward him. I really think this is going to be more of a wind event though, but that could be just as bad. It will be interesting to see if they hold the tornado warning as it moves ne.
Yeah, okay now it looks like the worst of it is missing his town.

A near-miss, Caleb. Keep alert though, there's still all the stuff to the south you'll have to deal with. I bet there will be a bunch of rain.
Caleb i dont think that there is any need right now for a tornado warning the worst of the storm is going to miss you to the north.
Oh, and don't forget to take some photos if you get any hail or wind damage or anything.
Yeah I took some I won't post them until the storm has passed because I Don't want to Take a photo and post them then get more takes too long! It's really windy out there lots of rain!
well just say safe thats all we ask caleb
Dude it's gone now I'll upload them
I heard on the news that there was a tornado near Portland Oregon Today! Not sure if it caused any damage or not, but WOW! A tornado in January in OREGON? hmmm
Anyone know Blake Michaleski? That guy must have some good pics with all the storms he caught today.
And he probably spent a hundred bucks on gas.
sorry caleb- i guess i am just a worry wart lol- and i been gone from the computer for awhile and just now getting my radars re-fired up
Yeah I was almost in a tornado warning want prrf? look at the posts up there

Hey guys, whats going on??
why does all the good things, well apart from the damage if there was any, happen when im away.....
Hi Tim I was almost in a tornado warning
Holy crap. It's too early in the year! This is insane! By the way, very cool Caleb! Just as long as everyone's ok.
Hey Caleb, wow, just reading the previous posts, close call i guess, glad you ok!
Ah another short stop, im off guys, too late here, have a good one guys and have a safe one see ya!
Hang on Caleb! Don't drop the camera! lol
Dude I got some pis but I'll upload them in a little
Ok, cool deal. You just stay safe out there, these are dangerous storms. Respect for nature, remember? ;) I gotta leave for a bit, be back later.
i just crunched some numbers on severe weather reports so far this year- including whats happened today-so far 83 tornados, 270 reports wind damage, 210 reports of large hail
Warning - Im Back.
Some of you I think are a bit mental for wanting a tornado in your backyard, or house. You DO NOT WANT a Tornado on you, heck, Im sure we would hear about being killed because of "taking pictures".
Looks like the event isnt over either, Model is showing that it may ramp back up again later tonight, the UJEAS Model.
Reed: whats your take on the weather thus far?
Got scattered thunderstorms to be rolling through tonight. I doubt anything worthy of note will really happen here, but heck, its still something worth note.
Woulda stopped by earlier but I got held up at work today.
So whats the main developments so far?
Got any hard numbers on the amount of funnels dropped yet?
new counts are 20 tornados dan- 2 of them were in the pac. northwest
Uh oh, the storm over me in Campbell Co., TN had shown a meso, it looks like a strong bow echo. NE of Birmingham, AL is getting again
Holy crap. I just saw something on the channel about vancouver getting a tornado and somewhere else.
So much for it being a 2 day only outbreak huh? Looks like its gonna turn out to be like 1999 all over again.
By the way, I got some pictures of that cold front that was giving you guys so much tornadic fun the other day it wasnt anything more than just wind and a bunch of clouds. But this is my first time using a high quality camera to catch my images, So pardon my whoring for a moment:

I was just going for "Oh, so this is the ole front which gave everyone an intresting couple of days." It clouded up a few hours before daybreak (I know, I was up at that point -_-) and was sunny again by noon.
So, Just gimmie some feedback, these are some of the first serious cloud pictures I took.
There was also a video showing the speed the clouds were moving at.
These were all taken from my barracks complex at fort meade.
nice pictures dan
Good job Dan! First time taking serious cloud pics you say? Not bad for a rookie ;) Course, I'm a rookie also, so I can't give you any real constructive criticism. lol.
It looks like these could die out into a big line... anyone for derecho events later tonite?
AJ-can you explain again what a derecho is? Did we have one this past week?
I forgot and I am having a glass of wine right now-so speak easy English!lol!!!!
A derecho is a straight-line wind that creates the classic bow shape on radar. Wind speeds can get up to 100 mph in some rare cases, and it can be rather destructive. It's really impressive on radar...
good job aj- but one minor detail- derechos also mover very fast
Ahh, true. Thanks Donny. Here's a good pic of one from NOAA.
http://i13.tinypic.com/85ors75.jpg
The wine isn't effecting your ability to see pretty radar colors is it? lol jk
happy to help aj ;)
Those were pretty colors! Thank you! did we have one this week with all the excitement?
I would gather from them going 100mph that they would be moving very fast!!-what is the difference between a microburst and a drecho?
I'll let Donny take over that one. lol. I've done my explaining for the evening. haha
**hiccup** i mean derecho//lol!!
ok-Donny!! What is the difference between a microburst and a derecho??
ok-Donny!! What is the difference between a microburst and a derecho?? Thanks AJ!!
susan- A microburst is a small, very intense downdraft that descends to the ground resulting in a strong wind divergence. The size of the event is typically less than 4 kilometers across. Microbursts are capable of producing winds of more than 100 mph causing significant damage. The life span of a microburst is around 5-15 minutes.
When rain falls below cloud base or is mixed with dry air, it begins to evaporate and this evaporation process cools the air. The cool air descends and accelerates as it approaches the ground. When the cool air approaches the ground, it spreads out in all directions and this divergence of the wind is the signature of the microburst. In humid climates, microbursts can also generate from heavy precipitation while a derecho is more widespread and moves very fast and more long-lived
So would a derecho still happen from when a cold front and a warm front hit each other? or from other things going on?
AND-did that happen this week?
Mind if I drop in on this?
A microburst is a small scale, damaging downdraft (think of it as a jet or column of downward moving air). By definition, it generates a damage area no larger than 4 km (2.5 miles) across... some can be less than a half mile.
A derecho is a massive storm complex that can generate dozens if not hundreds of individual microbursts and macrobursts (that's a microbursts bigger brother).
I know you didn't want too much weather gargon, but there's a website that has tons of info on the subject...
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm
But it's a little involved...
Hope this helps.
Woops, didn't type fast enough!
Your welcome Susan. I just had Donny answer that one because I wasn't too sure on the definition of a microburst. lol. I'm pretty sure there were a few of both over the past couple of days, but I haven't been watching the radar so much...
haha. All's good Simon. Got to get quick with the typing fingers on here sometimes. lol
progressive derechos form on the cool side of a pseudo-stationary front
Serial derechos, unlike progressive derechos, form under conditions of strong synoptic and dynamic forcings. Generally, serial derechos are associated with low-pressure systems, where the dynamic lifting caused by the low, and associated fronts, produces an environment conducive for the genesis of MCS
as far as this week- i would say it was more of a regualar bow-echo
Thanks for the feedback. The only really special thing I did was zoom in on some features of the cloud, kept the camera on a tripod then took the picture.
ok! Thank you very much! In the past few years of my fasination of tornadoes-I had never heard that term before! Very interesting.
I will print out that article Simon E. and read it later-I have had my first glasses of wine in a few years-(went great w/my garlic shrimp and spaghetti dinner)!!so I will read it later-but what I have seen it looks very interesting. Thank you to all who have answered my question-time to go sit down for awhile!!lol!!
happy to help susan and jealous of your super- i havn't had supper yet
(it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good.)
well im nuking some meatloaf and potatos now- a mans meal while watching these storms- i'm 10-10 on the side- you go the one and only donyn and im east bound and down
Both microbursts and derechos are fun to experience, if you're kind of crazy like me :P, but I don't recommend you go drive into either one. I've been injured by both, and respect both's power equally.
Aw darn, now you've made me really hungry! Now I have to go see what I'm eating... I think supper is now. lol. Be back later guys!
Glad to talk weather.
Actually, a glass of wine sounds like a good idea right about now...
p.s. Any more news on what happened out in the SE today?
So.....can anyone explain the tornado reports from Washington (state)????
i am pondering that myself chris
Here's the storm report from NOAA. It doesn't give much more info than this.
2030 HAZEL DELL CLARK WA 4568 12265 TORNADO WITH PRELIMINARY RATING OF EF1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE WITH ESTIMATED WINDS OF 90 TO 110 MPH. TORNADO PATH LENGTH WAS APPROX. 2 MILES LONG AND 1/4 MILE WID (PQR)
Rare January tornado blows through Vancouver, Wash.
http://www.komotv.com/news/13683607.html
Images: Tornado touches down in Vancouver
http://www.oregonlive.com/weather/index.ssf/2008/01/photo_tornado_blows_over_truck.html
Vancouver is the site of the only deadly tornado ever to strike either Washington or Oregon. Six people died and 300 were injured on April 5, 1972 when a tornado moved through the city.
Both Washington and Oregon average about one tornado a year each somewhere in the state. For Washington, 2007 was the first time since 2002 that no tornado was reported. This is only the third time since 1950 that a tornado was recorded in Washington state in January.
wtf i see u posted kevin martin website i used go on there alot but always caotic thhats one reason why i like this bit better now
..PRELIMINARY STORM REPORT FOR VANCOUVER TORNADO
A STRONG THUNDERSTORM MOVED THROUGH CLARK COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST
WASHINGTON EARLIER TODAY. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN SHORTLY AFTER
NOON NEAR VANCOUVER LAKE THEN MOVED NORTHEAST INTO HAZEL DELL WA.
PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES PLACE THE STRENGTH OF THIS TORNADO AS AN EF-1
ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE WITH ESTIMATED PEAK WIND SPEEDS OF 90
TO 110 MPH. THE TORNADO WAS APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE WIDE WITH AN
INITIAL PATH LENGTH OF TWO MILES. IT APPEARS THAT THE TORNADO
LIFTED UP AND TOUCHED DOWN MULTIPLE TIMES...WITH THE LAST REPORT OF
TOUCHDOWN NEAR HOCKINSON WA AROUND 1240 PM.
DAMAGE REPORTS FROM THE INITIAL PATH INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- 200 TREES DOWN....MOST OF THE TREES WERE 12 TO 24 INCHES IN
DIAMETER WITH APPROXIMATELY 6 TREES IN EXCESS OF 30 INCHES IN
DIAMETER. THE LARGEST TREE TOPPLED WAS 50 INCHES IN DIAMETER. SOME
OF THE FALLEN TREES RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO HOMES AND VEHICLES.
- 12 HOMES WERE DAMAGED...PRIMARILY ROOF DAMAGE.
- 4 POWER POLES WERE SNAPPED OFF.
- A SEMI TRAILER WAS TIPPED OVER.
http://kamala.cod.edu/offs/KPQR/0801110113.nous46.html
Dang. That's insane. I wonder how often that happens in Washington state...
1/4 wide isn't that kinda of big like a wedge look or no?
It's close enough for me to consider it a wedge. Any more than that and it would definitely qualify, any less and it would be considered a stovepipe maybe?
It looks like there is a small line of storms forming for me in southern virginia, Can I get any kind of confirmation from anyone else present? I know it's been forcast, But I dont have access to the atmospheric models that would help me there.
So any links to them or even a quick rundown of what you guys have in regards to virginia would be helpfull, they are moving north by northeast presently.
aj i storngly suggest you take a peek at the gfs precip type ahhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ohh and yes i do think it would be a wedge
haha. Whoa, if it makes you do that big an "ahh" than I need to see it. lol. You wouldn't happen to have a link would you?
Dan: Are you at Ft. Detrick? I noticed the buildings look the same if it isn't.
We made our trip to The Wal-Marts a little later today. Caleb's weather is impacting our lives. :D
I have to check out this Vancouver/ Washington stuff now. AAAAAA!!!!
I just checked the radar and there is some precip but I'm not sure I would call them storms at this point. What's the temp. there, Dan?
Wait, I found it Donny, and I agree: AAAAAAAAAAAAAHH! lol. If it couldn't have gotten more nuts than it has...
It's fort meade and the temp is near 50 right now. It had been raining for some time but then calmed down. I've been monitering the radar and it shows at least some kind of line moving right towards me.
Either way, if its just rain or actually a little thunderstorm I'll get back to you. I know its supposed to storm at least sometime tonight
Yeah, just going by the looks of those little cells, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little bit of thunder & lightning.
Ft. Meade has the same-kind-of-looking buildings as Ft. Detrick. My dad used to have to take us there to get our ID cards (he is retired AF). I grew up in western MD.
Those were some cool photos. I like how the dark cloud bank was on the top and then you could see the other line in the distance.
SE MD usually gets some pretty decent severe action in May-July. If you're there long enough you might not be too disappointed.
... Man, I wonder what JY ended up with today down there!
I'll be here untill October of 2009 easily. Then you guys can pretty much count on me getting on down to oklahoma. But I can't really wait. I was over in korea and the biggest bit of weather we got there was like...monsoon season. Dull Real dull weather.
i wrote ken clark and see why this tornado happened- and heres the response i recieved:
I have been trying to find out details about the twister, and it indeed was one, but meteorological data is scarce on this so far.
There is actually no mention of the event on the NWS Seattle web site. It sure was not the optimum weather conditions with
temperatures in the 40s and not a lot of shear. But I saw the radar and it sure was one. If I find out anything I will let you
