News DetailTropical Storm Gabrielle closing in on NC Outer Banks!

Tropical Storm Gabrielle appears to have intensified slightly over the last several hours, as upper-level shear has lessened and the storm remains over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Maximum sustained winds are still estimated at 35 knots as of the 2:00 am EDT advisory, but Gabrielle will likely intensify before passing over the North Carolina Outer Banks early tomorrow afternoon. The current NHC forecast indicates 45 knot sustained winds with Gabrielle at the time of landfall. The IR loop as of 2:00 am EDT is displayed below:

The likely center of circulation and outer bands of Gabrielle are well-defined on Morehead City, NC radar, with occasional supercells developing within these bands and near the center. Heavy rain, isolated tornadoes, and gusty winds will be the main threat as the tropical storm comes ashore, with a 2-3 foot storm surge causing minor beach erosion.

As is normally the case with recurving tropical cyclones at this latitude, Gabrielle will make a quick transition to an extratropical cyclone as it merges with the jet stream and accelerates to the northeast along the Gulf Stream. This storm will likely become an intense mid-latitude cyclone over the North Atlantic, and could cause heavy rain and strong winds several days from now somewhere in the UK.

Cool, I heard it's going to drop around 50mm of rain or more!
Also Reed, That picture I sent you of the hail, if you want put it up on the blog. Around 1 inch of hail fell and my friend got hit in the eye by one! Next time i'll try to get a picture of a Funnel.
So after North Carolina it appears that Gabrielle will track rapidly into the Atlantic Canada area...likely as an Extratropical storm. I bet Nova Scotia and Newfoundland will get rain.....but the amount they get will depend on how close the storm actually comes in proximity to land there I guess.
Dude, you mean to tell me its not raining in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland ALL THE TIME?!!?!?
lol haha. well ok...they get rain a lot there....but I'm talking rain heavy enough to warrant possible warnings....like 50mm or more (2+ inches)
:P
hey reed sorry but had gone when you got my message so sorry bout that....
my question is how does high and low pressure effect the weather because im not sure about it?

That's why flash floods are so dangerous:

@Cors: I sent you a friendship request (YouTube) several weeks ago. I recognized that you had sent me one before, but I don't recognized your request at this time.
Volker what was your account name on youtube again?
Here is a satalight look at gabralle
It's voma101. You should have a request.
We were hoping to get a little action out of Gabrielle, looks like it will won't even touch the N.VA area!

It's been so dead in here lately ahh...
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) The center of Tropical Storm Gabrielle made landfall Sunday along the North Carolina coast near Cape Lookout around 11:45 a.m., the National Hurricane Center said.
art.gabrielle.1115.jpg
At 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Gabrielle was about 20 miles east-northeast of Cape Lookout, North Carolina.
Gabrielle had top winds near 50 mph and, though its center had come ashore, the hurricane center warned that "the strongest winds and heaviest rains have yet to reach the coast and will be spreading onshore during the next few hours."
Tropical storm warnings remained in effect from Surf City, North Carolina, northward to Cape Charles Light, Virginia, including the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.
A warning means tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.
A tropical storm watch remained in effect in southeastern Virginia for the lower Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort. See the storm's projected path »
A watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, usually within 36 hours.
The storm was expected to turn north-northeastward later Sunday and to the northeast Sunday night.
After sweeping over the Outer Banks, Gabrielle's center was expected to return Sunday night over the Atlantic, the weather service said.
As of 11 a.m., tropical storm force winds extended from the center up to 45 miles.
advertisement
Coastal storm surge flooding of up to 3 feet was possible within the warning area and Gabrielle was predicted to dump 1 to 3 inches of rain across the Outer Banks and sounds of eastern North Carolina, with some areas getting up to 5 inches.
The weather service said there was also a "slight possibility" of isolated tornadoes over the Outer Banks.

Hey guys, hows it going??
Tim, You ask why or how high and low pressure effects a paticular region... Well High pressure can be cold or warm, the ones that are cold usually come from canada while the ones that are warm come out of the gulf. High pressure in the summer means a prolonged period of hot and of course dry weather. High pressure systems can cause a "mega block" which pushes the LLJ far north blocking rain chances. However in the fall and winter high pressures usually come from canada which pulls cold and dry air in from the north. On weather maps in the winter you see something that looks like an upside down horseshoe. that is a large trough that usually accompanies the high pressure.
Low pressure systems are responsible for the storms and stuff. When a low pressure enters you region you'll know. The barometer will drop considerably and usually means a storm is coming.
Now Reed may have a better explanation, but hey this is what I know. I'm only an ameuture(dunno if thats spelled right)

Sorry I couldn't respond right away... In the middle of painting a car.
Weather here called for rain so I had to wait till humidity dropped a little. Never did rain.
Up north of the city had rain for a bit Strike.. was looking pretty nasty with some convection there for a bit but it seemed to dissolve.
Found a pic of some funnel clouds in Anchorage, Alaska oddly enough. link in my tag. Sorry if someone else posted about these already.. They're back from Aug 20.
Here are my pics from last night in Edmonton...
http://damascus.gimpdome.com/funnel/
Hey Tim... Nothing here on Wall street. Looked good for a little while. Hoping for some lightning or something.
Cool pics. Snakey little thing eh.
Sarah!!! You saw the funnel too!!!?? Yay, because my bike chasing friend was like suuure you saw one.
Oh yeah, I was just on the side of the rode by the shed but more towards your house watching the funnel. Friend didn't give me his phone so I couldn't take video /picture of the funnel, I had a great shot of it too!
great pics, sarah! I think I can make out the funnel a buit in the last picture......really cool!
Thanks for the comments. Yeah Kenny, I saw it... but unfortunately missed it with the camera when it was really pronounced. Too bad you weren't able to get a shot of it...
Earlier in the morning (like 6-7 am), we also had a nice roll cloud that passed through - most likely from the cold front?
Heres the current nws grand forks site for the august 26th event. It includes tornado track maps, and a downloadable video/images.
Good morning everyone!
Look at this! Maybe we'll have some action soon! I hope...
http://www.weatherunderground.com/tropical/
And there's this...
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico...
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on recently
downgraded Tropical Depression Gabrielle...located about 140 miles
north-northeast of Cape Hatteras North Carolina.
A broad area of low pressure...associated with a tropical wave...is
located about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands
and is producing a large area of cloudiness and thunderstorms. This
system is gradually becoming better organized and has the potential
to develop into a tropical depression during the next couple of
days as it moves westward to west-northwestward at 10-15 mph.
Showers and thunderstorms over the windward and Leeward Islands are
associated with a tropical wave. Significant development of this
system is not expected as it moves west-northwestward at about 15
mph.
A large area of cloudiness and disorganized showers and
thunderstorms...extending from South Florida to the Bay of
Campeche...is associated with a weak surface trough and an
upper-level low. Upper-level winds are not favorable for
development of this system as it moves westward or
west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph over the next day or two.
Elsewhere...tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the
next 48 hours.
