News DetailSevere weather likely across Central U.S. today!

A strong positively-tilted trough and associated cold front will surge across the Central U.S. tomorrow, bringing the threat for severe thunderstorms from extreme northern KS northward through central NE, eastern SD, and western MN. Based on the model forecasts Wednesday night, it appears that most of the storms will be linear in nature given the strong linear forcing along the fast-moving cold front, with the best low-level shear southeast of the storms. If storms can remain discrete along the cold front, however, they will likely be supercellular -- but the tornado threat should be rather low given the limited low-level shear along the cold front. Selected forecast fields from the 00z WRF model Tuesday night for 00z Wednesday evening are displayed below, followed by a brief synopsis.

By comparing the WRF forecast surface field/12 hr precip (upper two panels) with the 850 mb forecast (bottom left), it can be seen that the low-level jet will exist well southeast of the cold front and associated storms, with only around 15-20 knots along the front in NE and eastern SD. The resulting limited low-level shear immediately along the cold front should limit the tornado potential there, and with the strong linear forcing along the front storms will have difficulty remaining discrete/supercellular. Further north into central MN, the low-level shear immediately east of the cold front is a little more favorable for tornadoes, but still not impressive (not shown). If a supercell can somehow develop or move into the intense LLJ in southeast NE, then the tornado potential will skyrocket. The WRF model is hinting at initiation between 00z and 06z in southeast NE at the nose of the LLJ, and if these cells will be discrete and surface-based, then they will likely be tornadic -- although I doubt this can materialize. If I were chasing tomorrow, I'd likely play central NE, and hope the LLJ verifies further west along the cold front, or hope for storms to remain discrete as they move into the LLJ after 00z. Or central MN along the cold front could be interesting, especially if the LLJ can intensify after 00z. Given all these uncertainties for tornadoes, we'll have to sit this one out since I'm trying to graduate while my hairline is still intact! Although if anyone chases tomorrow and would like to contribute their pictures/video to the blog, please email me! Stay tuned for updates.

Well... That could sound a lot worse!! I'll think about making a drive later! seeing as the seasons nearly over, I should probably take a shot! We'll see how things look later!!
Or am I gonna get another call from Joe Surfer telling me that everyone says the cap is "unmanagable"after I already pull into St.Cloud! hehe I guess Live and learn!! It was still a fun journey!!
Hey I just logged back on and already you're talking about me! Who knows Brady, maybe it'll look better tomorrow.
REED - love those forecasts, man.
Maybe there are also areas of interest in SE Arizona / SW New Mexico, and also parts of Illinois, Missouri, and northern Arkansas according to the latest SPC Day 1... hey does that green area include Izard County?
Look at this ^
"Plans call for building a tower that would be constructed of reinforced concrete with steel wrapped around it to give it the look of a funnel. The tower would have three levels of observation decks, one of which would feature a restaurant.
The development would also feature a 25-acre working farm with a petting zoo and an education center, 100,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space, and a weather station"

Hey, I'm no weather expert, but are the same storms (or front) you guys have been talking about the same ones now in MO? I'm thinking, that if they are, they've produced a few tornadoes (or tornado warnings) yesterday and today. So........... maybe in the central plains you might see some 'naders! (but then again, like I said, I'm a weather enthusiast, not a forecaster, so I don't know all the technical stuff).
;)
Sam, the tornado warnings in MO are in relation to the Low pressure system that is in the area there. The warnings are on the NE side of the low, which is the area where the winds are wrapping backaround the low in a East to West fashion, in otherwords the NE quadrient of the low is what to watch.
That Low system, happens to be pulling tons of moisture into Central IL where i am, although they are not calling for a organized severe threat, i wouldnt rule out a isolated severe storm for us in Central IL, and accordingly the SPC agrees somewhat with a 2% tornado probability. I will be keeping a eye out over my area.
On the otherhand the set up reed posted about looks prrtty good. I know Severe Studios will likely be chasing, and i believe John Okeefe from Supercellcrazy also said he would be out today.
Opps its Michael Okeefe, Not John Okeefe, i dont know where i got John...
Sorry Michael!

BTW if you are driving in Alberta this weekend be careful as freezing rain is possible in some localities.
We had a short but very hot summer.
The possiblity of a snowfall of more than 1" this month is 75%
Thanks, mynameisben.
Like I said, I'm no weather expert, so sometimes I might need a little help, Thanks! ;)
Joe, the SPC is leaving the 2% tornado chance at the MO/AR border. I'll still pay extra attention to anything that heads my way today, though :-D
Hey, does anyone know if Reed is out and chasing today?
I heard a lot of talk about a chase, but wasn't sure if Reed was really going to go out.
I do believe he said they're sitting this one out! I'm gonna go clean up the Dodge a lil just in case something fires up here!! I love not having to werk!! hehe
Reed says: " ... Oh crap possible BLIZZARD next week for northern praries
Early winter?
Heavy rain,snow and frezzing rain
It is a week away so maybe it won't amount to a blizzard
Looks like a lil band of storms about an hour north of me!
I'm no weather expert either, but I have learned a lot in the few months I have been bugging people here!! hehe
yesterday I was visiting my brother at his gas station. I was just kinda telling him what the SPC 2 day said about today. This one older lady asked me if I was a meteorologist!! I told her " No... But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last nite!! hehe (she didn't get it)
I don't know about any blizzards here! But it's gonna cool off after today and tomorrow! It's gonna barely reach the 60's! Booooo
Brady, that's hilarious! :-D
One of the best things about this site is that people can come here and really learn stuff if they want to.
Mike - "Blizzard for northern prairies" will probably mean severe weather somewhere in the states at some point! AAAAAAAA!!!
... Has anyone heard from Alberta Dale lately???
Reed, my husband has a cicada collection going, and he has had a HUGE (dead) dusk-singing cicada sitting on our microscope for TOO LONG ... I've been sitting here going, GEEZ, what IS that smell?!?! I just realized what it is - that thing is starting to REEK! :-x
acrording to global edmonton the temp next wednsday are forecast to be high 8C(46F) and low 0C(32F) with rain and snow.
Outside the city it will be more like high 5C(39F) low -3C(25F). With temps that low combined with Low pressure brings the risk of a severe summer snowstorm. temps for the weekend are a little better at 13C low 1C
Basicly blast after blast of arctic air will invade setting in motion a posssible historical summer Blizzard
We had a cool august meaning it ground is too cold to melt the snow if it falls heavliy
Learn the way they want to!!! That explains it perfectly!!
I haven't heard from Dale in a while!! I haven't heard from Andrew in a day or two either!! Hmm....
I've only been coming to this site since the Pipestone vid was on the local news here in Winnipeg and I personally have gained a ton of knowledge about severe weather.
Of course many thanks to everyone here for that.
But what do you all do in winter? Up here we get blizzards and potholes. Not very photogenic. or am I wrong?
Darin Brunin and I are chasing today. Just looked at the latest RUC...even though the cap is stout, I can't pass this one up. If I don't chase, all hell will break loose, if I do, I'll bust! Hopefully that dry push pans out, and the winds back up against it....or else not enough convergence will happen! No precip breaking out now at 0z. Bust potential = HIGH. NC-NW KS is where we'll be.
Out the door! Our live chase cam will be up later today....hopefully. Click on my name for the link.
Good luck to anyone else out today.
Dick
This was the best snowstorm I can ever remember^^^!!
Trick or treating on a snowmobile is fun!!
Yeah!! Good Luck guys!! Stay safe!! Bring us back a wedge!! lol
Somewhere my grandpa had a pic of his jack o lanterns in the snow! his pic had a lot more snow than this one!!
Good luck Dick, Michael, Brady, and anyone else who heads out today.
If anyone needs any nowcasting info just give me a call...I should be around the computer most of the day.
Hopefully the LLJ will verify further west...but it would be nice just to see some storms.
SNOW STORM in Alberta!!! We might have to make the trip up there for that.
REED
List of lacation known for big summer snows
Crowsnest pass
Calgary
Grande cache
Grange prarie
Hinton
Edson
Rocky mountain house
drayton valley
lethbridge
pincher creek
these places are in the foothills and wil get the most snow
for edmonton 5-10cm of snow is more likly than the 25-35cm father west
a few years back a state of emergancy was in for some area after a late summer snowstorm.
this is a week away so no idea exacly what will happen
I'm gonna go shower up and finish cleaning up my messy TIV!
Reed! If ya have any thoughts on what a guy departing from Duluth might wanna do, please let me know!! I'll check back here in 30!! I'm thinking heading to the St.Cloud area again!

Good thing it's only a test!! that sounds kinda scary!!
Summer snowstorms are not that rare in Alberta.
A few years ago we had all the tops snapped off our trees by a heavy snow on August 5.
We get a good one every few years.
On another note, a thunderstorm rolled through around 9 this morning with temps of 9C(48F). Brrr.
Reed, how about now-casting my laundry chores?! :-D I am about to hang the clean clothes on the line (WE DON'T OWN A DRYER, OKAY?!?!!) and I would appreciate support from everyone, with well-wishes that the rain holds off until the clothes are dry! :-D :-D Live on the edge, I tell ya.
Nice line of storms(for this time of year) along a front moving SE through srn Alberta. Temps 10-14C (50-60f).
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/index_e.html?id=XSM
Somebody down the line is gonna get it when this little package gets somewhere warmer.
Let me get this straight, Heidi... you want us to root for it to NOT rain there??
Hey Dick M., I didn't realize you guys had a live cam! THAT will definitely be worth watching! (If only there wasn't a good NFL game on tonight) Thanks for the link!
http://tornadolive.com/live.html
If you don't want it Heidi! I'll be glad to take it!!
I'm afraid we're gonna be lacking in snow this year as well! =(
Looks like there is some storms beginning in SD and northeast Nebraska...Good luck on the laundry Heidi :)
Speaking of rain, Tokyo is about to get its share! ^
Typhoon Fitow
I just found a place on 70 acre's about a half hour north of here!! It's less than a mile from my old family cabin where I grew up!! I'm gonna go look at it Sunday!! I need a house in the sticks! This town is driving me crazy!
Brady: I was just looking at the IR loops and St. Cloud looks good in a couple of hours, but I think the big show might be south of there.
Just my 2 cents.
Make sure you build a lot of old barns on those 70 acres. Those will attract the tornadoes for sure
Anyone want to see what ruined laundry looks like? Here's a hint: look for the color RED!
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/laundryruined.png
Oh well, at least everything will be extra soft...
Gotchya Strike! I was thinking on starting there and seeing what happens, I should be able to deploy myself better from there!
Maybe I should build a trailer park!! Those seem to attract em pretty good! hehe
Okay the weather guys are runinng around like chickens with thier head cut off when it comes to the blizzard.
On EC it looks like the blizzard will be pushed into N manitoba by warm air in alberta
TWN say it will not be as cold but still stormy
Global shows rain snow mix in edmonton and snow in the rural areas to the west wednsday
Accuweather says the storm will hit sooner and bring frezzing rain insted of snow on sunday
That the accuracy of weather 7 day in advance LOL
Brady: Only reason I say that is cuz I've been down there a bunch of times and as far as I know is great for heading any direction. I have to say your highways sure are chase friendly compared to ours. Unless you like washboard of course.
Heidi... Your luck must be about as good as mine!! hehe
This is weird! These guys are talking about snow and it's 83 in Duluth! Only in Duluth could it be 83 one day and snow the next!! I'm scared!! Our summer just started! =(
haha Mike
They have no idea whats going to happen in a week. Long term forecasts were pretty bad this summer. As usual :)
Lucky for them they had the monster ridge from hell to help out with the percentages.
Now that they say snow, it will probably be 25C and sunny :P
Heidi, so the monster dusk-singing cicadas are inside the house, and the clothing is outside the house... something seems backwards there!
Something seems backwards? in Arkansas?! SHOCKING! 8-O
I have my eye on saskatoon.
If it shapes up just right they are in for a day from frozen hell.
I have a feeling this laundry situation is not going to improve any time soon. Look at the line-up of pop-ups heading my way! Training pop-ups storms! They must KNOW my laundry is out there. asdfghjklgfb;ffvdf;s
Maybe it will snow here too. Then everything will be stiff as a board, and we can "break" the bath towels!
I hope you guys get some decent storms to chase today!
Wow! 86 now!!
Yeah, it's hard to say where to go. I'm probably not gonna have enough time and gas to venture out of the state!
I'm kinda holding up a lil here to see if Reed has anymore tid bits to share!! I'm also hoping to get back in time to get some more lightning over Wisconsin!!
Just got home from school there is a 2% chance of a tornado... I have a feeling that will change.
I hadn't even re-checked today's convective outlook yet until you mentioned it, Caleb. Notice, also, how the southern part of the slight risk has been extended further south. I can here AJ screaming for joy now! :-D
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
Man Caleb, when I was your age the first thing I did when I got home from school was turn on the TV to cartoons and eat two bowls of cereal. You kids are sophisticated nowadays!
The tornado in Missouri this morning even made USA Today ^^
LOL yeah Joe Ive been liking tornado sence i was five and that was 6 years ago!
My money is still on central Minnesota.
^^^ This is what happened when I was Calebs age!
I'd usually go outside after school unless it was crappy out!
then it would be Nintendo time!!
If there was a Tornado out ITS MY MOMS CAMRA AND A BAG FOR HAIL. AND I'ME 10!!
Those pumpkins look cold, man.
Maybe those aren't pumpkins, maybe that's a shot of Brady and his buddies. You the one on the right Brady?
Tornado warning :p
* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
NORTHEASTERN JERSEY COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS
WESTERN MACOUPIN COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS
* UNTIL 315 PM CDT
* AT 223 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH STRONG ROTATION 8 MILES SOUTH OF KEMPER...
OR ABOUT 7 MILES EAST OF JERSEYVILLE...MOVING NORTHEAST AT 20 MPH.
A FUNNEL CLOUD WAS REPORTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AT NEAR THE
MACOUPIN JERSEY COUNTY LINE AT 225 PM.
Lol! It does kinda look like me!! hehe
That tornado warning looks very strange, if not unwarranted, at least as far as what I'm seeing on GR3. ??? At least it says that it was a doppler warning, not someone who got excited & reported a scud as a funnel.
Do you guys think these storms will hit the Southern MN, Mankato Area, im hopin for somethin before dark but im getting that feeling its gonna all go just north..
Yeah that might be a landspout.
Heidi you took the words right out of my mouth! I was going to say the same thing, until I read the warning again and saw the funnel cloud at the bottom
JOE dr. greg forbs says tornado report w of a ST. Louis
I'ME IN A 2% OF A TORNADO!!!!!
Geez, they changed that 2% area again. Hmm... Caleb, is Paducah your closest NWS center? Somehow I thought you were more in the central KY area?
Reed, why does the Storm Prediction Center insist on typing everything out in all-caps and using so many abbreviations?
Example... why can't this,
"ADDITIONAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT IS LIKELY ACROSS WRN NEB AND POTENTIALLY
INTO WRN SD AS STRONGER FORCING SPREADS EWD."
...be mellowed out into this,
"Additional thunderstorm development is likely across western Nebraska and potentially into western South Dakota as stronger forcing spreads eastward."
I once read that using all-caps instead of initial-caps decreases reading speed by 30%!
Maybe they think it looks more official if it's in ALL CAPS? AS IN, MAYBE IT WILL BE TAKEN MORE SERIOUSLY? BUT WHAT DO I KNOW?
I THINK THEY SHOULD START PUTTING AAAAAAAAAAAA!!! AT THE END OF THE HIGH-RISK STATEMENTS, IF THAT'S THE CASE ;-D
LOL!!
It would make sense if they were sending the alerts out by Morse Code or something, but you would think by the year 2007 it would be better!
I just looked at those Jack-o-lantern photos - HA-HA! (Don't know why I am just now doing it?!)
If nothing significant is going on at Halloween, Reed ought to have us send him our Jack-o-lantern photos to post! The Canada folk might have snow on their pumpkins anyway!

Caleb, I have special powers. :-P
Okay, okay ... you said you're in the 2% tornado risk area, and that's the only part of Kentucky included in that. So I just took a guess. But I used to think you were closer to Louisville though.
Go sw of where you are currently, Brady. I know, loads of help, aren't I? And don't forget your charged-up camera, and cell phone. What would you do without me, huh?
Joe, it's most likely because the NWS is absurdly resistant to change and modernization.
Just remember Brady... LARGE HAIL CAN HARM YOU.
Also, only you can prevent forest fires!
Heidi I'me an hour from Louisville. I can remember being right accross the river. And on May 30 2004 A live tornado was on tv. here is a Vid.
Click my name
Thanx Heidi!! everything is charged up and I'm brining the chargers with!! I finally gots me a power inverter!! Hopefully I can steal someones internet on the road!
Hehe Joe!! I'll bring my bro's bike helmet!! lol
Hey Joe!! Do you still have my cell#???
Corey, the only thing I can think of is maybe they're still sending out the notices by radio signals in some parts and don't want to burn the bandwidth for shift characters and extra letters. But even if that was the case... if it's on the internet for us to read, why not make 'em more readable!
I've still got your cell number. The question is, does a supercell have your number? Whur ya goin, anyway?
Brady, you can borrow this one if your brother says NO WAY!:
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/bikehelmet.jpg
I'm going to go watch your video now, Caleb.
OMG i love tonadoes just not in real life and i love the weather i am only 12 almost 13 kk BYEBYEZzZzZ
This is Brady's helmet ^
Got one just like it myself
hey guys what been going on?.......caleb just watched that video nice one lol
Hey everybody! Looks like I missed a few things, like usual ;) Hope Dick M. and Darin B. are having some fun... is there anything out here in Kansas, or anywhere close to Kansas? My stupid computer won't let me into my programs.. grr.
HAHA!!! Great Pic Heidi!!! I should be good!!
Yeah Joe!! I'm gonna head down there again!! If anything goes down that I should know, would ya wanna relay to me!
I dropped Reed an email too!! I'm out in 10!!
Yeah, cool video Caleb. And Joe, I have a helmet like that for HS football games, except instead of alcohol, I have Mountain Dew ;)
Brady, where are you headed in a bit? Anything going on right now?
I'll definitely call ya if I can... good chance I'll be gone for the game, but maybe not... make sure you take Reed's cell number with you!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!! Severe weather!! If only it could drop further south into the southern plains..... The weather down here is crazy! yesterday we barely made it into the 80's and today we are near 90 w/ thick humidity! But thats just because mid level moisture is arriving from the SW due to the remnants of former hurricane Henrietta. Boy does tomorrow look WET w/ Henriettas moisture interacting w/ the front producing widespread and HEAVY rain! Flash flooding could become a problem...
Well I gotta go for now, got loads of homework to do=)
I'll definitely call ya if I can... good chance I'll be gone for the game, but maybe not... make sure you take Reed's cell number with you!
That's super classy, Joe! :-D Although, I'm not sure the Minnesota highway patrol would be very impressed to see a tornado chaser oat and aboat using one of those things as his chapeau. :D
I wonder where AJ is? I am shocked he hasn't been on here going all WoO-hOo on us?
Oh yeah, Caleb, I'd actually seen that tornado video before. Can't see much, but ya can hear the roar at the beginning, while the siren is going off.
See what happens when I take too long to write an email?! Hi AJ ... oh, and Hi Zack, too. :p
I'm off towards St.Cloud and I'm out the door now!! Wish me luck!! please don't mention hwy patrol!! lol jk!!
Sup Hiedi! Just doing homework as usual:-D
Hey there Heidi. Yeah, I hate my homework. I have to write a paper in English... grr... oh well.
Good luck Brady! Don't get a ticket!
Good luck brady!
This time will be better than the last!
good luck brady....hope you get something
Good luck Brady...lol.
And yeah AJ! Try 3 Alegebra 1 papers and a history assignment!! I'm gonna SCREEEEM!
Sorry... Anyway the OU v.s. Miami game is giong to be a wet one...
Could anyone check up on the remnants of Henrietta?? Thanks..
Hi everyone! I'll be original...as everyone says: GOOD LUCK BRADY!
My cat is doing stupidities...I'm coming back in few minutes

OR BUSINESS. HEAVY RAINS FLOOD ROADS QUICKLY SO DO NOT DRIVE INTO
AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROAD.
Sorry, my brain was not in gear - I thought that was a tornado warning at first!
Well, now you know how I feel a lot Heidi. lol
Hmm... there's ILC's building to my SW... I wonder...
AJ, those cells look kinda nice on radar. Get some shots of them in case on one else gets anything!
Dodge City radar isn't working right now. :( ...
Dick & Darin from tornadolive went to NE, right? I wonder where they are. Their livecam isn't up now either.
I was just a little early on that severe warning I posted!

AJ that is down on the MO IL border...my grandparents live in randolph county...they arent in the path though.
Just called Brady to find out WHAZZZUPPPPP.
He and his brother just exited off I35 at Hinckley, and they are steaming toward St. Cloud. Told him he would cross that little line of thunderstorms pretty soon. He's got a radar with him this time too! But they need to find a free wireless point.
Wish him luck Joe! He needs some action I think...
Thanks Ben.
See ya guys! I'm out for a soccer match!
Hope those who are chasing will bring us great footage! Good luck everyone!
Gents, and ladies, I have some errands to run, and a storm to explore :) I'll be back on later.
Peace!
Hmm... Caro and AJ leave at exactly the same moment... hmm... :-D

Oh well keeps the RENT low
MynameisBen its fine, John is my dads name.
Anyway I opted not chase because I won't miss a day of school for a setup like this. I wasn't impressed with it when I woke up and I might as well wait for later in the month.
I've been trackn a lineof storms near ST louis and it looks Tornadic. the public reported a tornado. maybe a small EF1 tornado.
Good call Michael...classic plowing front setup with the LLJ way too far east.
It was still exhilarating to see the low clouds streaming north this morning. OK is about due for a big October severe weather outbreak.
Has anyone heard from Dick today? I checked his cam earlier but it looked like it was down.
OK guys-just took some pictures of some nice thunderheads-how do I get them downloaded for you to see??/from Northern IL
Reed there is a storm with strong rotation. I've been trackin it on live tracker
I can see this storm from my house! :-D

Poor Brady. He probably turned around already. Hope he didn't waste too much gas. Or maybe he got some nice back-lighting on that squall line moving east of St. Cloud? :-/
Heidi-didn't you forget to mention AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhh!!??
Sorry .... asdfghjkl;lkjhgfd;. Is that better?! :-D
Joe, I just finally read the story about the tornado tower you posted w-a-y up near the top. I hope they put a doppler on the top. They'd almost have to if they want to be legit!
There we go!!LOL!! Thank you!!I wanted to make sure when I get that lucky-I remember to post it like that!!:-D
Reed, i see you ask about Dick and Darin, i would be happy to say, they are/were on a the tornado warned cell that is in extreme NE Kansas, From the looks, i only see two spotters from SN near there, and two Spotternetwork reports...One of a rotating wall cloud, and the other of flooding...Both are within 20miles of where they are...so it may be them...hope they got something exciting!
Anywho, had a brief spin up in the county south of me...happened so quick i would have had no time to get on it...However it does appear a tornado touched down near Williamsville IL.
Hey guys and gals, I'm back. Looks like an exciting night ;) Yeah, I hope Dick and Darin got some action. I had a brief svr warning to my NW, in Wallace Co., and an even briefer sign of a nice hook. It never did anything after that though :( Oh well. Maybe someone else is luckier than me tonite.
*chirp-chirp
I'm out guys, I need my sleep. G'nite! Hope all the chasers out there tonite get some action!
Peace!
Well I just got back, We got some tiny hail here in edmonton today.
If Alberta does get a snowstorm, I'll be sure to get some pictures/video!
Chance of T-storms tomorrow!
Anyone keeping a eye on Dick?(sounds wrong lol) They are on a awesome cell, and its been showing a decent copulet...the spotternetwork reports i mentioned in my last post are from them.
Hey I'm back! Didn't see anything real good! just a lot of rain and a lil lightning! This is the only decent pic I got!!
