Video showing the devastating impacts of Hurricane Katrina's cat 5 storm surge

Related Categories: Hurricanes
This video was shot by a family in Chalmette, LA, showing how devastating a category 5 storm surge can be.  The water rose from ground level to the roof in only 3 minutes!  Sadly, everyone in this neighborhood lost their homes to the 20+ foot storm surge of Hurricane Katrina.

Similar, if not much worse conditions are likely being experienced in northeast Nicaragua and eastern Honduras after cat 5 Hurricane Felix made landfall last night.  To make the situation worse, 20+ inches of rain fell over the mountainous terrain of Nicaragua and Honduras as Felix weakened over land on Monday, creating devastating mud slides and flash floods.   Below is a link to an article with photos from ground zero:

WOW! I wish Nicaraugua and Honduras luck with Felix! You don't really realize how bad a storm surge can be until you see a home video of one!!!!!!!
Also, as a side note: Most of you may not know, but Hurricane Katrina caused devastation in other places that New Orleans. In Bowleys Quarters, Maryland, neighborhoods were flooded by a storm surge from Katrina too (and I'm pretty sure that they were flooded up to there roofs too).
I guess it's a risk you take when you decide to live near the water (Bolweys Qarters was right next to the water).

WARNING:did you guys know that hurricane felix is taking the same path as mitch in 1998? mitch killed over 11,000 people due to damages and floods because it stalled over the Honduras and Niguaragua(pardon the spelling) hope that Felix doesnt do the same as Mitch but it would make a good story huh?

Doug, he said he would never stay for another hurricane again, that he would run.

That was very powerful. ... Now I'm going to watch the video Cors has linked to.

f5 you mean? F stands for the fujita scale and it measures tornadoes, anf cat 1,2,3,4,5, measures speeds for hurricanes

A catagory 5 is a strong Hurricane, ive never heard of E5 but an EF5 is a very strong tornado, sometimes 1 mile to 2 miles wide.

Video showing the devastating impacts of Hurricane Katrina's cat 5 storm surge Comment Posted By Karen | September 5, 2007 @ 10:35 AM #

tornadoes r measured by their speed destruction and size on a thing called a Fujita scale some weird guy invented it anywayits f1,2,3,4,5 and sometimes f 6's. Hurricanes are measured by their wind speed by categories 12345 and the stronger they r the higher up they rank got it now?

Katrina was a cat 3 at landfall, but the storm surge was that of a cat 5. Even though the winds decreased abruptly just prior to landfall, the surge built up by days of cat 5 winds did not. I heard reports of 25+ foot storm surge from Katrina.

I think that was Simon's car!!!

Felix sure came & went like a mayfly.

First it looked like it was going to cross the Yucatan and strengthen again in the Gulf... then it looked like it was going to pummel Belize... then it looked like it was going to rake the entire coast of Honduras... looking at the final track (pic^) it's just petering out down in Nicaragua.

I sure hope the Miskito villages did okay!

Looking like North or South Carolia may be dealing with a Cat 1 or minimal Cat 2 for the weekend. With that high building in it should push a developing system onshore. Wouldn't be a bad thing as they need the rain in the worst way just not the wind.
Currently in Buckeye Land aka Columbus Ohio it is 93 and sunny.

Susan, Joe has pointed you in the right direction about the asdfghjkl;bgfdjvbi, but it can also mean extreme excitement, not just that one is ticked. Reed owns the copyright for saf;dbgfvb;dfg;b so if we have misinterpreted it in any way, I am sure he will give us what for. And then he'll say AAAAAAAAAAAAA asdfghjkl;fv;d;
