Based on recent model data, it appears that the best upper dynamics will not eject over the instability axis until very late afternoon or evening, and initiation during daylight hours is a huge uncertainty...especially over the Dakotas and western MN.   Instability will be slightly higher than previously forecast, with CAPE values of 2000+ J/kg from the Dakotas southwestward to northeast CO.  Based on the WRF and RUC models, the best chance for supercells during daylight will be across northeast CO and western NE.  RUC forecast loops for CAPE, 850 mb, and precip are displayed below:

As seen above, instability does not appear to be a limiting factor for severe weather today, with substantial CAPE across the entire warm sector northeast of CO.  However, based on the eastward displacement of the LLJ, there will likely be substantial mixing along the pressure trough/front, increasing cloud-base heights and decreasing low-level shear.  As seen in the 850 mb loop below, the LLJ migrates back westward after 00z (7:00 pm CDT) after daytime mixing ceases, so any discrete cells will encounter enhanced low-level shear after 00z.

The main limiting factor for diurnal tornadic supercells today will be the late timing of the best upper dynamics ejecting from the upper trough over the western U.S.  Based on the 300 mb and 500 mb forecast, it looks like the primary jet streak will pass over northeast CO/western NE by about 00z, spreading northeastward from there by 03-06z.  The RUC precip forecast is consistent with this, with convective initiation limited to northeast CO and western NE by 00z.  Storms will likely fire across the Dakotas between 00z and 03z, which is coincident with the westward migration of the LLJ around and after sunset, so these storms will have a chance to produce if they can remain discrete.

The SPC has issued a large 5% area for tornadoes in their Day 1 Outlook, but this is likely for supercells near and after sunset.  Stay tuned for udpates as this severe weather event unfolds.  Good luck to all who are chasing today!

1st MSD

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE THIS AFTERNOON
OVER PARTS OF UT/CO/WY. STRONGER CELLS IN THIS REGION WILL POSE A
THREAT OF DAMAGING WINDS. WW NOT ANTICIPATED AT THIS TIME.

MORNING SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW A VIGOROUS UPPER TROUGH MOVING EASTWARD
ACROSS NV...AND STRONG SOUTHWESTERLY MID LEVEL JET NOSING INTO
WY/CO. LATEST AZC PROFILER DATA SHOWS WINDS OF 80+ KNOTS AS LOW AS
6KM AND CONTINUING TO STRENGTHEN. VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS A ZONE OF
MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES AND STRONG HEATING FROM SOUTHWEST UT INTO
SOUTH-CENTRAL WY WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE WARMING RAPIDLY THROUGH THE
60S. COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT AND STEEP LOW/MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
ARE RESULTING IN MARGINAL MUCAPE UP TO 500 J/KG. STRONG DRYING WILL
OCCUR FROM THE SOUTHWEST THIS AFTERNOON AS UPPER TROUGH APPROACHES.
HOWEVER...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY AHEAD OF DRYING FROM
WESTERN CO INTO SOUTH-CENTRAL WY. STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES MAY
ALLOW DOWNWARD TRANSFER OF MID LEVEL MOMENTUM...LEADING TO ISOLATED
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS IN STRONGER CELLS.

hello, I am wondering if we will get anything in Souther manitoba in the winnipeg area. Environment canada does not mention anything about tstorms even though the SPC has its slight risk zone spreading into our region.
What do y'all think?

@ djonur
Accuweather says: Yes
EC Says: No

Unqualified Me Says: If we do it'll be after dark which means crappy chasing anyway.

I dont agree with SPC's 2000Z Outlook,

I just looked at the meso analasis and Dewpoint recovery is well underway, South Dakota is between 61-64 now, Temps 85,

Effective sheer is about 45 knots with Brn 70-100.

LFC (I dont know much about this part) is 2400-2200.

Yeah Caleb... Your right things are looking good for oklahoma tomorrow... Although I do not foresee any tornadoes happening. Severe weather also looks quite limited. I don't know, maybe things will change. We'll see..

P.S. Reed lives in Norman Oklahoma.. I live in south oklahoma city in oklahoma!

It was awful hard playing paintball in 35 mph winds today... ;)

LFC NOW AT 2000 IN SOUTH DAKOTA -

I dont know what SPC was thinking, only problem will be getting the storms going, if they do that, and stay discrete, or a MCV, TORNADO

Poor OU fans. :'( I wanted to see them vs. USC for the BCS championship. WVU lost too, though, so maybe there's still a chance for OU ... unless, well, nevermind. I just wanted all you guys to believe OU still has a chance. :(

-200 CIN in north-central SD right now...although there is a lot of convergence along the front right now...200 CIN will be tough to break, and we're past peak heating. I think the SPC was right-on with their outlook...convective initiation being the main question, as well the late timing of the good upper dynamics. Maybe there will be some nocturnal action.

Severe weather likely across Central/Northern Plains late this evening Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 29, 2007 @ 6:16 PM #

Not so much, Tim. Where I live (Seattle) our severe storms are usually in the form of windstorms or heavy rain. Last November, the storm that gave us record rainfall and killed two people here was also the same storm that swept across the country and spawned 20 tornadoes and killed 8 in North Carolina! (click name). I'm sure Reed remembers it.

Severe weather likely across Central/Northern Plains late this evening Comment Posted By David REimer | September 29, 2007 @ 6:18 PM #

Volker, They put that into effect 2 days ago, aroudn 4 PM CST, At least for the county maps, it has the warning path only now.

Hey Reed,

Did you see the latest run of the GFS? It is showing next Saturday a nice low and trough along with good moisture and instability in W Oklahoma. Maybe another Oct 9 2001 or something. All I know is it got my attention! I sure hope its right.

As for Tuesday the WRF was showing a low directly over my house with good SE winds and decent instability, but CRAZY tds exceeding 70F I think they may be overduing those quite a bit.

Anyway happy to see things starting to change.

Y'all watching the USC-Washington game (you especially, Joe!)?? I can think of nothing better for OU than if USC loses too...

David, I might be wrong, but I think that there were some areas that started doing the path-based warnings even before 2 days ago. Whatever the case, Volker was obviously referring to what the NWS has in their official announcement: "... The NWS currently issues and disseminates warnings for tornado, severe thunderstorm, flood and marine hazards using geopolitical boundaries. Realizing the continuing need to improve the specificity and accuracy of warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, floods and marine hazards, the NWS will implement Storm-Based Warnings on October 1, 2007."

Good catch there Sk. I was expecting some stuff around midnight to roll in here if we got anything.. I didn't even catch that.. it's like a single county on the national map and right on the line haha

Severe weather likely across Central/Northern Plains late this evening Comment Posted By Tim | September 29, 2007 @ 11:33 PM #

Someone asked why we didn't have anything happen today.. I think there was a pretty strong cap.. but more importantly we had (and are still having) wind gusting upwards of 70km/h which was blowing the tops off of TCUs earlier.

Severe weather likely across Central/Northern Plains late this evening Comment Posted By sk | September 29, 2007 @ 11:35 PM #

Why didn't EC issue a svr tstrm warning on that cell around emerson? NWS did, and said they only ended their warning because it moved out of their region

Can anyone say "Positive day 3 outlook"?

Is the TV.net vehicle tuned up? It's been so long since a video it seems like you guys are semi-retired! You might not have to drive far on Tuesday.

Looking forward to an update.

Severe weather likely across Central/Northern Plains late this evening Comment Posted By Reed | September 30, 2007 @ 10:29 AM #

Cors you're back!!! great to hear from you.

Andrew: we'll definitely be chasing when the chances look promising...as it does next week! The problem this summer and fall is I have to work on my research and dissertation because I'm set to graduate this spring, and I need to make up for lost time since I was storm chasing non-stop during the spring. Once my dissertation is done, I'm storm chasing every event full-time!
