Tornadic Supercell raging in NE!

Related Categories: Tornadoes

A persistent tornadic supercell has developed in extreme southwest NE and has moved northward across I-80 this afternoon.  So far, no confirmed reports have been received from this storm, but it has looked incredible on radar...absorbing every cell that develops immediately around it.  A severe thunderstorm watch has been in effect this afternoon for northwest KS and western NE, as a jet streak is ejecting out ahead of a large trough over the Western U.S.  RUC analyzed 0-1 km EHIs (below right), are in the 2-3 range ahead of this storm, which is barely sufficient for tornadoes.  EHI is a composite index involving both CAPE and helicity, and is a good measure of the instability and shear in the low-levels of the atmosphere.  Sorry for the late blog update!  I've been away from the computer all day today and just now returned to this insanity!

Those are really high-based, according to the reading on the meso icon. Reed said something like that he guarantees a high-based hose this weekend, so ... does this count as the weekend?? ;D

AJ - click the smoothing box on the right-hand side of your radar. It's by where it says "range rings". (Unless you've already determined that your machine won't allow smoothing.) :P

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 28, 2007 @ 8:13 PM #

If AJ is going commando (no radar), he may have a hard time discerning what's going on, trying to get through all that storm to the south of the tornadic cell

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Heidi | September 28, 2007 @ 8:17 PM #

That's exactly what I was thinking, Joe. Hopefully he's just pulled over somewhere being awed by the lightning & structure. The cell near Scott City could cause a lot of problems for anyone coming north from Garden City.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 28, 2007 @ 8:20 PM #

I shoulda seen if he had a cell# I'd hate to see something drop on him in the dark!! It is kinda comforting knowing someone will call if things go hay wire!! That's a real big help on the road Joe!! especially around here where ya can't see very far day or night!!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Strike | September 28, 2007 @ 8:20 PM #

Hey all, I see there is some action finally.

Or did I miss the best stuff already?

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 28, 2007 @ 8:24 PM #

Yeah, that Scott City cell could be putting down some hefty hail, too. That original cell that Mike U. was on seems to be falling apart.

It looks like he's trying to get to the right flank of the thing.. probably sees a hail band coming towards him and doesn't have a baseball bat as standard equipment in his chase vehicle.

Mike most of us are watching this on a program called GRlevel3, which is a radar program that displays current weather conditions... and also shows the position of some storm spotters that are on the network. The program costs $80 but there is a free trial for a few weeks

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 28, 2007 @ 9:44 PM #

I suppose it's a lil flatter around there Than I'm used to!! hehe

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 28, 2007 @ 9:46 PM #

Looking at Mike's photography, it looks like he may be more into skyscapes and lightning stuff instead of crawling right up the elephant's trunk like Reed does, so maybe that's what he's up to

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 28, 2007 @ 9:50 PM #

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Tom | September 28, 2007 @ 10:24 PM #

So it's not just me. Thanks, Joe!

How come Reed hasn't fixed it? I mean, what else does he have to do? Other than chase storms. And take classes. And work on his thesis. And do interviews. And... :-)

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 10:24 PM #

Hey everybody!! Thanks for wishing me luck, I realized I needed a heavy dose of it after going "commando" (thanks Joe ;)

I pulled up about halfway between Scott City and Garden City, parked in the ditch and watched the storm roll off to the NE, and oohed and awed over all the lightning. There was some intense lightning in that thing! I managed to get a few photos while driving (tricky, I know), and a short film, when I edit it, it should be about a minute long. Hopefully, my equipment is up and I can get it online soon!!

I got home about an hour ago... I actually stopped spotting before that. I went to go check on a friend out in the country, that had hail an inch thick in his driveway!

The last successful chase of the year methinks...

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 10:29 PM #

I don't know, knowing my dates, they'd want to drive into the tornado!! lol Most of them like it when a storm pops up... if you live in Kansas, and hate severe weather, there is something wrong with you! lol

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By JY | September 28, 2007 @ 10:32 PM #

Tom,

The Live Tracker doesn't work while Reed isn't chasing. I'm not sure if he is chasing tomorrow. I would say no, but it could look amazing tomorrow morning.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 28, 2007 @ 10:38 PM #

Congrats AJ! Just so you know, right after you left, the cell over Scott City put out a tornado warning, so you were watching the right thing!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 10:40 PM #

Ooohh yeah! I saw some rotation, possibly a rain-wrapped tube. It was so thick I had to pull over and get my bearings, and make a few calls to local farming buddies ;)

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Kenny | September 28, 2007 @ 10:51 PM #

AJ!!! I'm so jealous of you!!. Grats on the chase, I think bike chasing that would be a LITTLE*ahem* to much for a kid on a bike to handle...

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 10:52 PM #

I was sitting in the Dodge (yes, I have a red Dodge pickup now :D), in a ditch near this dairy outside of Scott City, wondering what was hidden inside of all that rain and hail. Apparently, there was a tornado! I saw it once, when I took a dirt (now thick mud) road, parked again a few miles in, sat and waited.

Unfortunately, now that I look over the video and pics, most all of them I took after it started to hail on me aren't worth a crap :( There might be some salvagable ones... hopefully.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 10:53 PM #

Peaceful and quiet is half right. Not too far from that I think now there's going to be another dairy or something... I don't know, we're growing ag-related leaps and bounds out here. What needs to grow is our high school: 1900 kids and the halls are THICK!

yeah Brady, one thing's for sure, you haven't missed out on anything.

Or something like that. When do we find out if Reed is chasing tomorrow or not?

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By AJ | September 28, 2007 @ 11:54 PM #

Joe, I just discovered this! Did you mention the tornado in the Northwest today? I know it is nothing like what other areas of the U.S. get … at least the NW got something.

I just read a local TV blog, and the TV station’s chief meteorologist mentioned it. If you would like to see two pictures of the tornado –

There are two reports (for 9/28/07) for the Lebanon, Oregon area according to the NWS.

ROOFS DAMAGED ON SEVERAL FARM BUILDINGS OFF TENNESSEE SCHOOL DRIVE DAMAGED BY TORNADO. SEVERAL TREES UPROOTED AND 1 TREE SNAPPED OFF. (PQR)

TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN BRIEFLY. NO REPORT OF DAMAGE. (PQR)

Ha ha ha, I just logged on to the Seattle radar, and lo and behold, there is actually a storm spotter there!

Somebody named "truckerweatherwatch." I had heard of them before but had to look them up. They are truckers who are also stormspotters. How cool is that? I'll have to meet the guy, it looks like he lives around here.

He actually installed a Vortex anemometer on his big rig!

Hey guys...we decided not to head out because of the low moisture. We'll be coming out of retirement for sure next week.

The shear looks amazing tomorrow..if it were closer to home we'd be all over it

Tornado Warning!! Brevard Co. FL!!

Wasn't it that earlier this summer, you guys weren't impressed with the shear, but moisture was good?? I thought that was the case a few times!! Now the shear is incredible, but lack of moisture!!! hmm... Sooner or later it's bound to come together!!!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Strike | September 29, 2007 @ 9:30 AM #

Brady, are you actually up this early or still up? haha

Looking like battery charging time for me. Think I will cross the border if things look good to the south later. I know you are going out!

Its kinda hard to believe that I can talk about chasing anything but snow squalls at the end of september.

Yeah, I saw on the radar some leftovers headed your way.

Forecast for us is 30% chance of showers from EC. I'm hoping for more than that. Obviously!

Guess I'll do the usual... Work all day until I see something happening then drive like a madman.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Heidi | September 29, 2007 @ 9:50 AM #

I was just checking the models and the ETA is showing a pretty generous area of 60s dewpoints (ON THE 6-HR), basically in the same place where the SPC has the slight risk. The cape is not *that* bad in those areas, especially through the central Dakotas. It looks like mid-to-low level shear will be pretty huge, but upper-level shear is a bit more to the east. Don't ask me what that means in terms of storms though! ... The models for late Tuesday-Wednesday are causing me to feel some anticipation for severe action, but it's still pretty far out and a little too far north yet. Something has to happen here sometime, but I hope I don't have to wait until November - cruelty! :D

Here's the site with the models, if anyone is intersted and/or doesn't have it.

We're off to go pick up our truck from the Dodge garage. There was a recall with the ball joints on the front end & they were worn out pretty badly, so HOPEFULLY that solves the mystery. That was some scary stuff last weekend! 8-O

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Strike | September 29, 2007 @ 9:59 AM #

Heidi, recall on ball joints? Thats a first. Usually they chalk it up to wear and tear. Good for you.

I didn't have that link. Thanks.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 29, 2007 @ 10:03 AM #

I werk on cars all day and let me tell ya!!! They don't make ball joints like they used to!! I'm seeing more and more plastic every year!! =( I lost my love for Chevys 5 years ago!! Never loved Fords!! Dodge is heading in the same direction!!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 29, 2007 @ 10:18 AM #

Too bad it wasn't night here!! I'd probably have a good lightning chase over the lake!!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Strike | September 29, 2007 @ 10:28 AM #

Brady, I own a little customizing shop here in Winnipeg so I totally know what you mean. I also do normal repair work to pay the bills and I can safely say the big 3 have nothing but big problems nowadays. Big horsepower is my passion. Better for chasing too! haha

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 29, 2007 @ 10:32 AM #

Hehe!! Nice to see someone agrees!! It's just sad!!
At least there is less rusty crap on the streets!!

It looks like another lil storm has takin aim on me!! I might have to go for a lil Saturday drive!! hehe

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Strike | September 29, 2007 @ 10:35 AM #

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Matt | September 29, 2007 @ 11:44 AM #

Hey Brady i pretty sure i know what your doing today. If anything comes your way.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Kenny | September 29, 2007 @ 11:44 AM #

Don't worry Brady. All of the good stuff will happen later in the day and moisture should come in later in the day too. I'm sure you'll get to chase something today/tonight! I'm just sitting here in the cold weather bored.

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Reed | September 29, 2007 @ 12:09 PM #

It seems like this year for the Southern Plains all the severe weather happened early in the spring season, and will be late for the fall season as well. GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tornadic Supercell raging in NE! Comment Posted By Andrew | September 29, 2007 @ 12:15 PM #

Reed I know it's WAAAAY to early to be talking about this, but what do you think of Tuesday?

For that matter, every couple of days for the next 10 look interesting, lol.

Only thing I see on Tuesday's model is the high dews might stay south of us up here.

Hey guys... It is once again Saturday, and you all know what that means.... COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!! OU is playing Colorado today, should be a breeze. Anyway my stubborn pool wont drain all the waterout so I have spent most of the morning w/ a bucket filling it with water and emptying it.. And let me tell ya it wasn't fun!!

Despite the pool problems, the weather is very nice this morning! It may be 82 degrees but there is no humidity and add a breezy wind and it feels wonderfull!! It looks like we COULD see some roudy weather on Sunday when a cold front comes through. I'll definently be watching the situation!

So is anything happing where you guys are at??
