La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely!

La Nina is the exact opposite of El Nino in the Pacific, with cold sea surface temperature anomalies developing along the Equator in the eastern Tropical Pacific just off the coast of South America, and spreading westward towards the Dateline by December.   The development and intensification of La Nina results from several positive feedbacks within the Pacific Climate System, including an increased surface pressure gradient between the Southwest and Eastern Tropical Pacific, stronger Trade Winds, and increased upwelling of colder deep-waters along the South American Coast.

If La Nina continues to intensify as forecast, then a cold winter will prevail in the north-central U.S., eastward through the Great Lakes Region and the Northeast.  The Southwest U.S. and southwest Plains will be dry, and likely colder than normal, and the Pacific Northwest will likely experience wetter than normal conditions this winter.  La Nina during late summer and fall is also associated with active hurricane seasons in the Atlantic Basin, which is still yet to be seen.

We're still keeping a close eye on the severe wx chances this weekend...we definitely need more moisture!

Thats awesome! I love winter weather here in Illinios. My Ford Taurus is VERY GOOD in the snow...theres been a few times i've floored into deep snow to the point of not being able go any further...and then just backed out of it no problem. I only got high cantered(stuck because the snow lifts your car off the ground in the middle, not near the tires) once last year.

And i agree the moisture appears to be the only missing ingriedient...I'll go out side and turn on 1 million fans blowing north, to try and help the flow. although i guess the fans would need to be 20,000+ feet in the air.

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By MynameisBen | September 27, 2007 @ 11:50 AM #

Opps

I meant: Able to go any further in the first paragraph*

I also meant high centered* not cantered

I think the only reason Ford built the Taurus was to plow into things.

I personally can wait a very very long time for snow banks.

Its about time we get a real winter here, been so many years that winter has been cut short by at at least a month around here. Last year could not make up its mind, lakes all froze over right on time and then we hit a warm snap that opened many of them back up. Like spring arrived in the middle of Dec.

Am I the only person who is having trouble getting to www.grlevelx.com or did they change their web address? It could possibly be I am trying at work but I am unable to get GR3 for this weekend. Any idea's ?

I love Lows!!!, A low is moving its way in and will hit me by this afternoon bringing warm temperatures and possible showers-tshowers maybe thunderstorms. So far friday looks like my best chance!

Not sure what you mean, Monty. Are you having trouble going to the website www.grlevelx.com, or having trouble getting radar data to appear in your GR3 program?

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Volker | September 27, 2007 @ 2:29 PM #

I'm back from Italy. I saw nothing special, just on Tuesday (last week) I was able to intercept a thunderstorm which barely reached severe limits (but I don't saw a tornado). Here some pictures I took: http://www.sturmjagd.de/wbb2/thread.php?postid=28350 , slightly rotating, small hail, strong gusts and heavy rain but nothing more. On the same day a strom which fired up further west looked much better than the storm I saw, but I wasn't able to chase it, because I could only ride by bus. Whatever, I'm glad to be back (it was a typical tourist region with lots of garbage and dirt, I won't visit it again).

Volker, those were come cool photos. It's interesting to see severe storm photos with the Italian countryside as a backdrop - we don't see that kind of thing very often! I especially liked the mammatus photos. :)

I wonder how Caleb got home from school today, since he was kicked off the bus! :D

Caleb, instead of trying to bloody the other dude's nose, why not just provide every detail you can think of about the wonders of mesocyclones. That should shut up any potential adversary in a hurry! Remember this for next time, okay? :P

Yeah, AJ send me a message too. Just go to that bulletin that Dick M. posted the other day about spammers & you'll see me.

I've been watching the one west of that, by Plainview. It zoomed right up and has just been sitting there. According to reports it put out a tube for awhile, now has a funnel cloud.

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 6:39 PM #

It's so stationary, they put the cell dead-center in the tornado-warning box, instead of to one side like they usually do.

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By AJ | September 27, 2007 @ 6:44 PM #

Yeah, I see that now... dang. lol. Now I wish I had seen this earlier! I"d be rollin!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 6:49 PM #

It wouldn't have given you enough lead time... it went from nothing (no cell) to tube in ~50 min

I can't imagine it was much of a tornado (but what do I know), but then again, it would have been really cool to sit underneath that thing and film all the roiling... no need to reposition!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By AJ | September 27, 2007 @ 6:55 PM #

Oh I know! That would have been the highlight of the film! And you're absolutely right, because of time, I would probably have missed the most exciting part.

Oh well.....

Hurricane Lorenzo should make landfall in just a few hours ^

I can't imagine anyone's chasing it though

Rainbow chasing?! That's too dangerous for my blood! Those things are deadly!

Nice work once again!

Joe everything just comes to me... except Tornadoes!! I'm still being patient!!

I'll tell ya a secret about me!! I've been fishing since I was 3!! My first fish was a 10lb lake trout,( except for those lil sunfish at the end of the dock!!) I was 14 when I caught my first walleye!! I chit you not!! It was a guppy too. since then I've caught over 100 my best like 6lbs!!
I'm still waiting for my first musky!!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 10:19 PM #

Mexico does seem to be hogging the hurricanes this year. I knew we never should have passed NAFTA. I wonder if Reed will do a blog on this one.

That's a big first fish! My first fish was a 16" northern, caught somewhere in Minnesota on a bobber & worm. "Marblehead Lake" or some place like that? I think I was 4. I was hooked after that! (no pun intended)

Ahhh good ole Minnesota... searching for agates in the gravel... getting stabbed by horseflies... and what's with those trees you have with those bubbles on pitch on them? Did you ever pop a few of those with a small twig and then drop it in the water... the twig jets forward as the pitch spreads out backward!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 10:24 PM #

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 27, 2007 @ 10:28 PM #

I've heard of Marblehead Lake!! U gotta love them crazy northerns!! I've caught more of them things than anyone could count!! Never really big ones though!! The horseflies make ya not even notice the skeeters!!=( and speaking of sap bubbles. There's a tree just down the road that has the largest sap bubble I've ever seen!! I'll get a pic for ya tomorrow!! It's way bigger than my head!!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 27, 2007 @ 10:31 PM #

Yeah!! I took them after work tonight!! I wasnt expecting to get sweet photos today!!

I wouldn't doubt if you were still trying to get that sap off of your hands!! hehe

Does anyone know where I can find a radar loop from earlier in the day? I don't think I can go on living without seeing the DFW radar from like 5:00 - 8:00.

Check out the storm reports from today. HUGE line of wind/hail going down east Texas. I was probably a hundred miles away, but from where I was I could see every single feature in the (super?)cell, and it was even better when the sun went down!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 10:48 PM #

Marble Lake! Not Marblehead. Not too far from you... Lake County.

Connor, there's a Level III archive site somewhere where you can request old loops, they email them to you, then you uncompress them and drag them into GR3, but I've never done it.

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 27, 2007 @ 10:55 PM #

This site Connor, but it's unavailable right now

http://hurricane.ncdc.noaa.gov/pls/plhas/has.dsselect

I've never done it.

Yeah Brady that area north of you would be ideal, if only it had a few more tornadoes. I guess you can't have everything.

How many tornadoes have there been in Minnesota this year anyway? Seems like not very many

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Connor | September 28, 2007 @ 12:36 AM #

I just checked the satellites to see Lorenzo landfalling as a Category 1 or 2 (we'll find out soon enough). And some models are putting Karen as a hurricane in 5 days, once the shear lightens up!

I can only think of what ever came down the night Northwood got hit, Grand rapids, and whatever was reported last Thursday!! I think there was some in southern MN earlier this year!! That's it!!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 28, 2007 @ 1:04 AM #

That's a pretty neat link!! I don't see a marker for Grand Rapids!! We sat here and watched the whole thing on GR3!! And yes there was reports!! Hmm...

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 28, 2007 @ 1:17 AM #

I don't know, but it seems like there is a far cry between what comes out in the alerts and what is actually confirmed. Even that one in Texas tonight that shouted, "A TORNADO HAS BEEN CONFIRMED!"... I'll believe it when I see a pic or article!

La Nina intensifying in the Pacific...Winter extremes likely! Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 28, 2007 @ 1:27 AM #

I didn't see what you guys were watching in TX! I wish I did!
I remember watching the Northwood Tornado, you could see the couplet just tearing along!! I think a northeast motion!! That was awesome just to watch on radar!!

The GFS and NAM are in agreement that Sunday looks like garbage. WTF happened?
The NAM is usually the one that is too fast with things. But the GFS is saying the same.

Chance of chasing on Sunday: 20 %

Chance of UT kicking KState and OU's a$$e$ in the next two weeks.......... 90%

Hi cors, I was there for my vacations. I never have been in this region (Adriatic coast/North Italy) before, just further west in the Alps (South Tirol) and at the Lake Garda, which are much better targets. If I wanted to chase there seriously, I would have needed a car.

SYNOPSIS

DISCUSSION

...Parts of the Czech Republic, parts of Poland and NE Germany...

An upgrade became necessary due to increasing confidence of an enhanced tornado risk !

A well developed occlusion ( now over southern / central / northeastern Germany) with a large area of quite intense stratiform rain is forecast to constantly shift towards the north / northwest during the next few hours.
The airmass behind this front is characterized by dewpoints in the lower tens over the Czech Republic and mid-tens over Poland. Atmosphere now starts a gradual cool-down with rapidly steepening mid-level lapse rates and a broad area of low to moderate instability release will be the result.

The main concern will be the activity, which now develops just north of NE-Austria and over the Czech Republic in the prefrontal airmass just in the left exit region of an intense jet. Shear especially at lower levels remains strong (SRH-1 values at or above 200 J/kg, LL shear of 10-15m/s ) and in combination with low LCLs, an enhanced risk for several tornadoes will be a distinct possibility and even a strong tornado cant be ruled out. This threat is forecast to spread northward during the next few hours.
In addition, hail could reach our criterion in the stronger cells, especially where enhanced DLS and SRH-3 values of more than 200 J/kg overlap next to the front.

Some marginal modifications were done to the rest of the outlook area.

But I live in Western Germany. So nothing for me :-( .

Still waiting for your first musky. Man i took care of that 10 years ago. actually i have caught 2. One was about 15-18 lbs and the other was about 20 lbs i think. That same day i had another one on that was probably more than 20lbs but it got away.
