At least 11 tornadoes were reported yesterday in the United Kingdom, in association with a massive squall line that roared across the country during the early morning hours. There tornadoes were either non-supercell tornadoes associated with the "book-end vortices" of bow echoes, or were embedded supercells in the line. The towns of Farnborough (location of above picture), Nuneaton, Northampton, Luton, and Nottingham reported damage to homes and overturned vehicles, but thankfully, no injuries were reported. Shown below is a map showing the locations of the reported tornadoes so far, from the London Telegraph:
The links to various news stories concerning this tornado outbreak our listed below, along with a link to the severe weather research group of the UK: Tornado and Storm Research Organization (TORRO). 33 tornadoes are reported annually in the UK, but most of these tornadoes are very small, brief, and weak. In November of 1981, 105 tornadoes hit the UK in under 6 hours!

A frequent participant in the blog from the UK, Tim Jacobs, posted this great video of the storm yesterday from Lincolnshire, along with some pictures of the tornadoes.
Quite an event - and very cool that we have first-hand accounts from Tim! ... 105 tornados in 6 hrs!!!! 1981 must have been off-the-charts for Britian's tornado tally! 8-O
Wow cool shots and thanks for posting them. Must have been pretty active. Does England have tornado sirens? Stay safe across the pond. Record high 93 yesterday and low 90's again with some storms here in Buckeye/Bengal country.
hey guys im only here fo school....
i may be coming over there for university hopefully and i may be coming over next summer for a few weeks if my science teacher can sort something out for me :D cant wait....
thanks alot reed for using my video :D
sorry was ment to say im only here for this because i have to go back to school and help!
Sitting in Morton IL, getting ready to activate, i have two decent looking cells heading my way
I would say exciting event except for the two deaths & injuries that is sad, I guess they avg. 33 a year. over there. Reminder why we have doppler radar every 100 miles or so.
Looks like they're crapping out on you, Ben. :-(
hey guys back from school....
ben looking good at the moment i dont know what the lake could do to it though.....
they have just posted another svr thunderstorm warning out on it now....
Ben's down in Morton though, Tim, ~125 mi southwest of Chicago.
Yesterday Paul was asking if Chicago might get a little something... looks like they might get a little bit in 15 min or so
Hey guys how is things going today.
There are some cells coming over the The Lake from Michigan that look good im hoping they make it over the lake.
ah ritgh lol sorry.....
Yeah thay talked about that on AB looks to me that was inflow winds.... STORMS HEADING MY WAY
Yeah Matt, that stuff sliding over from Michigan is sorta heading in your general direction, isn't it.
Yup it is.
Man what a day at work today. My boss freaks out on my for one reason today. So now im pissed off and everybody from Hockey Night In Canada but Don Cherry show up at my work for a golf tournament.
Matt or joe can you tell me what the heck this is? I found it on winkapetea ben franklen made it. He was the first storm chaser
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/BenFranklin_Waterspout_1806.jpg
Caleb im not sure what that is. But from the looks of it on the bottom it looks like water so it could be a waterspout but i have no clue.
Hey all.... Got back from school 2 hours ago. Had a stupid and easy 6 wks math test! Any way that was an awsome video Tim, and great pics too...
Now for the weather down here it is COLD!! Well not like 40's and 30's cold but 50's and 60's. The front came through at about 1pm and the temps dropped nicely afterwards. Hey I'm enjoying this fall weather, the 80's and 90's were getting to be too much for me ya know. My pool is draining nicely but slowly especially since it rained this morning adding more water to it.
I'm looking forward to Halloween, what about you??
Ya i really dont do the Halloween anymore. But there are some storms in Michigan that look to be coming my way hopefully tonight.
hey zack!..... thanks....
still i would say reasonably warm there then well not if you have been getting 90's over the summer....
lol even though im 15 ya gotta love halloween lol....
Winkapetea? LOL
Caleb, you're right, Ben Franklin was a severe-weather buff. That was his attempt to study waterspouts (click name)
I didn't meen doing trick or treating, I'm 15 Matt a little to old for that stuff.. I just like scaring the little ones off w/ my spooky decorations.. hehe
Yeah there are storms comming your way Matt. Is it cold over where you are??
Hey Tim..lol. How's it going?
No its steaming hot where i am. 30C with the Humidex at 38C.
Where do you live Matt?? Canada?
Ya im in Southern Ontario.
going great thanks zack....
how are you then??
Oh... Well thats weird, usually Canada is pretty cold this time of year...
I'm doing great myself Tim... Took a 6 wks math test in school today, and a detention to serve for bieng late Friday...ugh!
No kiding. 2 weeks ago in was freezing with temps and about 11-15C and now its back up in the 30C area. But after today its going back down to the low 20s
Matt, do you mean 20 degrees celcius or 20 degrees farienhieght(hope thats spelled right)??
ah maths cant stand it .....good to hear your ok..... i guess its your last year aswell then??
Yeah it is.. I'm in the 9th grade.
so just a few more tests and then its over..... lol if that is a good way to look at it if ya see what i mean....
Celcius Caleb.
Shut up Matt thats a hard word to spell jeesh.
I live in the u.s. and we go by F.
Yeah I see what ya mean Tim. You said it was boring where you live not too long ago.. Mother nature proved you wrong didn't she hehe..
HUH LOL what do u mean?
lol yeh she did zack with a great big sucker punch lol....i wonder if i say its boring again we could get summin again lol ;)
My bad i said Caleb sorry zack
Hey all!! Nice job Tim!! I thinks this means your Reeds English connection!! hehe I just got home from work!! Fun stuff!!=(
I hope Ben can score!!
calleb i think matt ment zack lol....

how was your day??
No worries Matt..
Forget it Caleb we messed up on a word..
Yeah I wonder too Tim.. Say it again...hehe.
Sup Brady!
ah not just yet zack save ir for a rainy day lol ;)
It is now 61 degrees and still dropping!! Time to break out the hoodies!
Boring!! I'm sick of cleaning up after dummy's at work!! I just can't understand why some people can't figure out how to put tools back when they're done with them!! =( The weather absolutely sucks here!! but I won't complain after this last week or two!!
We all feel your pain Brady...lol.
Fixing to pour over here.. Clouds getting heavy and by looking at radar a storm is comming.
No advisory on it yet, but TD-13 has formed in the gulf! Here's hoping it hits me here in Texas.
Well guys I gotta go eventhough I don't want too. Got stupid math homework to do and some chores around the house.. See ya'll -P!
lol you've had a few good weeks i guess then lol.....
cool zack hope ya get a decent storm then if its heading your way
I gotta go eat dinner im out but ill be back
cya Zack.
Yeah connor, I knew something was developing out there long before they issued that advisory!! I'll do some research on it later..
This time I'm REALLY gone, see ya!
see ya zack have a good one!!
Sorry guys, I have one more thing..
Connor, TD #13 is actually moving SW.. Which means it will hit central america shortly.. BUT TS Karen has developed out in the Atlantic and is heading WNW which could effect the New england states eventually...
This time I'm gone for real!! Bye!
This is the first time in a while the SPC outlooks have nothing to good to say for me!! Maybe a possibility on Saturday, but that looks like it's gonna go away!!
It's only 52F here!! Fall is in full force today!! Who knows!! Our seasons have been late for the last few years!!
brady....how long do your seasons go on far then cause i know the tornado season is spring and summer but what goes on now then??
here is somemore pic from that tornado from englend^^^
Yeah I see that now Zack. When I wrote that comment the advisory hadn't been issued, so I didn't know where it was supposed to move.
There are five active stormchasers hanging out just west of Toronto, waiting for that stuff that's streaming over from Michigan. They look like a bunch of hungry trout waiting for something juicy to float over.
Well Tim... As summer goes away! We start to get the Nor'Easters!! I think I spelled that right! That's when the winds and storms come in from the north east right off of Lake Superior!! Long stints of Very windy, cold, sleet, snow, and Freezing rain is regular! Not to forget HUGE waves!!
If you ever heard of the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald!! you'd understand what I'm saying!! If you haven't, look it up!!
BTW... Gordon Lightfoot's comin to town!! =)
ah right brady thanks :D...... i cant say i have ever heard of it i will look it up now .....
Im looking foward to winter. Be better weather to film.
Look at all the stormchaser icons in your area right now Matt ^^^
They seem to be starved for action!
I'll get some vid from downtown when the gails come!! Watch the 12 footers pound the piers and the ships!!
I would be two it wasnt rained or had a good storm in about 3 weeks
I dont have gr but what does the green triangle mean Joe?
Now there's seven of them. It's a feeding frenzy
wow brady no i didn't know that......
Like you said Joe!! Trout!! just waiting for a bite!!
Green triangles are hail signatures, they get bigger if the hail signatures get bigger. Those ones there are just 0.50" and 0.75"
"The Gails Of November" Tim!! Some crazy stuff!!
They Say the Arthur M Anderson( which was behind the Fitz a few miles back) recorded waves over 30ft!! That's insane and then some!!
I need to figure out how to set that up! I haven't even tried yet! I need a gps and some mobile service too!!
cool well hope ya have a good season in the winter and waves of over 30ft thats mad...... how can a ship withstand that :O......
will be back soon guys got to reset my comp cause it is messin around and gunna go get summin to eat see ya!!
Which radar site are ya watchin Joe??
Were did everybody go????
No idea!! It just got real quiet!!
BREAKING NEWS!!!!
It rained a little bit here, and as soon as it ended, THIS happened!!!!!!!!!
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/_-43.jpg
So I HAD to do something!!!
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/_-45.jpg
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w226/thefurmouse/_-47.jpg
AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
:D
im back guys....wasn't realy gone long lol....
Hey check this picture out. Not sure if its faje or real.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l14/cgogin/multiple_tornadoes.jpg
Heidi that has to be the funniest thing i ever saw OMG!!!!!
I KNOW!!!!
I was going to punt-kick it but it got into the high grass before I had a chance! This is the same one I got after with the shovel that one night!
LMAO!.....Nice one Heidi :D
poor guy thats all i have to say poor guy!!!!!
LOL Heidi not trying to be mean or any thing......
MY UK BEAT YOUR RAZERBACKS I was right I bet ur doing this richt now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Qo1eaWF8c
Matt id probably say that tht is fake, but even so nice pic :D
im off now guys have a good one see ya!!!
Heidi!! That was so funny! I was wondering if you had kicked it! was it lying on its side?
Also-that tornado picture-someone sent a picture like that in our area a couple of weeks ago when the Chicagoland area had bad storms everywhere!
Caleb you are such a meanie! :(
(Just kidding ;) Arkansas is an annual disappointment on the gridiron. I'm happy for you that UK is having a great season, since you know what it's like to suffer through the bad ones.
I think Reed needs to make a new blog entry about my armadillo issues! :D
Matt, that has to be fake, but whatever, it looks awesome!
Matt that is a waterspout famly.. tornadoes can do the same thing. tim it is not fake
Sorry Brady, I had to make a milk & cookie run. Been watching KDTX (Detroit)
Susan, it had kind of slowed down & was turning to the right so it looks a little flattened compared to the other photo. I SOOOO wish I had punt-kicked it. That would have been the funniest-of-all-time photo for me!
LOL Nice Heidi!! I'm glad we don't have them here!! they're ugly!!
Heidi heres a tribute to that armadillo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afuJnsWRkwE
Joe what do thos storms look like that are coming towards me???
Gnite Tim!! Great journalism!! I'm gonna make a quick coca-cola? fried chicken run!! I put mine on GR!! brb!!
That was to bad you didn't kick it and get a picture of it! I would've then gotten letterhead paper with that picture on it to use! That woud've been hilarious!!
on a side note-those storms that are in Michigan went thru my area this afternoon-they are reporting a possible microburst! To bad I was at work!
Susan I'm waiting for those storms to come to southern Ontario maybe tonight cause its starting to lose light. But it could be a good light show.
It was a pretty good show-got night-time dark/windy/really good lightning show for a while. But I was so busy at work-couldn't go out and video tape it. But it went thru quite fast-hope it works out better for you!
Man it got quiet again. Going to make myself some alcoholic drink. ill be back.
Heidi - huge coincidence. Look at what I was wearing when I read your post ^^^ The pic is blurry because I used the wrong setting but you get the idea! How bout that.
PS: those things sure are ugly, they look like something that should be living on the bottom of Puget Sound
HAHAHA Joe! What are you doing wearing a D-backs cap in Mariners land? I gots an excuse - I lived in AZ for 6 years and was there (in the state, not AT the game) when they won the World Series. My husband had a 5K race in Phoenix the week after they won, and the race finished in Bank One Ballpark (or whatever they're calling it these days) and the field still smelled of stale beer (everyone was allowed down on it).
And, remember I was there when Randy Johnson hit the dove! ... So yeah, I wear this visor pretty regularly!
I never told ya all, but I have a terrible coke habit... I buy about a 12pk a day!!hehe I haven't had one since about noon so I had to fly to the store quick!! hehe
Matt, that stuff is still heading towards you but it looks like it's going to be ~4 hours until it gets there as far as I can tell! Better get comfortable.
Heidi, I went to a game in Phoenix a few years ago, and it was "hat day," and some of the others didn't want theirs go I got several of them! It's a great design! My favorite cap as a matter of fact.
I dont have to go to work until 3 pm tomorrow so ill be awake.
What town do you live in Matt, so I can plug it into my GR.
Tottenham, Ontario
I haven't looked up Tottenham yet, but if it's where I think it is (just west of Newmarket), suddenly these small storms just built up close to you, with a hail icon even ^^^
You could see a little lightning any moment perhaps
Dose any one know what the life-cycle of a tornado is? well here it is
http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp-qKuKf5GM
Ya Joe im just west of Newmarket. And im currently looking for any lightning right now.
I think i put to much Crown Royal to my drink man its a strong one.
Hehe!! It'll put some hair on your chest Matt!!
Now which site Joe??
Yeah, Matt, these two small storms just built up and will be over you in about 30 minutes.
Brady - that shot's out of Buffalo
Joe i added an + to your GR photo to show u about where i live.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff207/ontariostormchaser/902cts.jpg
Nevermind my post.
Hey but i was pretty close.
It looks like they're sliding to the south of you now ^^^
They're pretty small but who knows if you look south maybe you can see some lightning or at least some clouds! You get what you pay for
Im starting to here thunder im pretty sure. The thing is i have a huge house blocking my view south.
Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 9:25 PM #
That seems only fair. If a tornado is launching golfball sized hail at you, why not launch hail sized golfballs back at the tornado? Ihope you don't mind Joe, but I had to put that on my myspace page!! I'm still laughing!! hehe
Ya that has hilarious. Man i should use that to somewere.
Joe has left i think.
Nice lake trout!!
He'll be back!! I still got a lots to learn about GR3! Hey Joe, Whats the trick to getting the canuck cities to show up??
TY!! Joe!! It woulda looked nicer if it wasn't dark, if my drunk mother didn't take the photo, and if the fish hadn't been on ice all day!! hehe!!
Hey Joe where are those storms at im starting to see the lightning
Okay Brady, do this:
1) create a text file on your computer somewhere (such as going to your desktop and right-clicking anywhere and then selecting "New" and then "Text document"). Name the file something like Canuck Towns or whatever.
2) Then copy/paste the above data into the text file ^^^. Make sure you copy everything inside that post, starting with the word color. Save and close the text file.
3) Go to GR and select "Windows" - "Show Placefile Manager." Then click on the folder button. Then click on the button that has three dots on it... after clicking that button, use the window to navigate to the new text file you just made, click on its name, and then hit okay. Close the placefile manager.
That should make them appear
3)
Thanx Chief!! 9911
Did it work?
This mass of storms is really holding together well, but it's probably gonna be doomed by the lake. At least the southern part of it anyway. I hope you get to see some good lightning action though, Matt
U know I hope so to Heidi and im still laughing at those pics u posted earlier.
Yep!!! Werkt!! While I'm at it!! How do you get the chaser icons??
Well im out guys
We're kicking ourselves here right now because we didn't make a video! It would have been crappy though because our only video is what our little digital camera can do, and it doesn't even have audio. We have big, big plans for the next time one of those little buggers comes into the yard during daylight! But hopefully we have a better camera by then. :D
Open the placefile manager again, and in the empty box, copy/paste this in there:
http://www.spotternetwork.org/grlevelx.txt
Hit okay, close the PM, and voila
Have a good one Matt!!
I can't believe it's only 8!! gettin darker earlier!!
Oops, I forgot to add,
After opening the Placefile Manager, click on the new folder button, THEN copy/paste that URL in that blank box (then okay, etc.)
Thanx again!! I missed em last time this was discussed!!
I don't think I could live without GR!! Like I'v said before... This is what I was looking for, for the boat!! Oh yeah!! And chasing!! hehe
Make sure you just copy/paste that URL into the blank box inside the placefile manager... you don't actually have to travel to that URL and copy/paste that huge text file.
(For the Canadian towns you had to create a text file, but for the Stormspotter icons, all you have to do is stick that link into the placefile manager)
It works!! hehe I can't wait til my icon is on there!! =)
I hope this thing works to track snow storms!!
The other cool thing is to use the GIS - Settings - Show Always List, to "force" certain cities to always appear at whatever radar site you're using. For instance you can go to the Duluth radar and make Hermantown always show up no matter what
lol!! I was just looking at that!!hehe I'll have to set Ogilvie too hehe!!
I was trying to figure out why it wouldn't zoom right on mine and my bro's laptop's!! Here they were set at 5000 steps!! lol
I want to move to Minnesota or something this winter. Only for winter though. The most snow I've ever seen was 3 inches when I was in second grade. :(
Anyone up north willing to take me in this December??? :)
Hard to say, but if they're older laptops it could be the graphics cards... GR3 requires graphic cards that aren't too ancient
Awesome pics Tim! That video reminded me of some of the storms out here (Manitoba, Canada) this summer.
I never realized UK must get more tornadoes then we do in Canada.. I don't think we've ever had an outbreak of more then 6 or 7 at once... 105 in 6 hours would probably be approaching my threshold of "Ok.. this was fun.. where do I hide now?" when I had to keep track of 5 or 6 on the ground at once hahaha.
as a matter of fact Connor!! I will be buying a place soon and probably will need a lil help with the bills!! Of course last December was like this^^
Halloween night 1991 we got like 36 inches here!! that was fun cuz I was 10!!
I got them working!! I set them to 5 steps!! My laptop is only 2yrs old and my bro's is a brand new HP with Vista!!
Mine is set at 1 step and the zoom amount is 1.200... with a wheelmouse and by using "Pan" mode that allows for some sweet smooth zooming!
Thanks Brady, but I wouldn't be much help with the bills. I mean how much money did you have when you were 16?
60 degrees in December? Wow, that's cold!
Now that I think about it, my parents might be willing to pay to get rid of me for a few months...
Brady's Winter Camp for storm-troubled teens?
LOL Joe! Brady should definitely open that up. Me, AJ... sorry Caleb, you're not a teenager yet!
Cold!! It should be like 20F in that pic!! 60 in December here is unheard of!! We usually get our first snow that sticks to the ground in mid November!!
I think it was Christmas eve 2004 we had -24F when I left for work!!
Crap I misspelled my own name up there!
First snow in November?!?! I haven't seen real snow in 2 years!
First snow that stays!! I've seen it snow in September!! My bro says when he went to work a few weeks ago he seen a few quick flurries!!
that is smooth Joe!! Thanx again!! hehe!!
I have to take back what I said. This year we had a flurry (no accumulation) in April of all months! But it has been years since I've seen accumulation.
40-50% chance for either rain or storms on friday for me!
Heres a vid my mom took from her place last March!!
Here's a guy who ain't no noob to snow storms!! How's it goin Kenny?? 700
There was practically nothing on the ground just a few hours before she took that!!
Matt, you're in Tottenham?! Cool! I'm in Beeton, just 10 minutes north of you!
Small world. Small windy world. But not windy enough much of the time. :)
I'm good Brady. I hope to bring in some nice footage on friday if theres anything that can push out. Snow.. hmmm I can't wait for a snowstorm!
Heres another of me try to get out of the house!!
Hehe!! I hope you can get some good shots!!
yeah!! I hope to get some good snow this year!! the last few years it's all come late in the season!! Hopefully I can get some good snowmobiling in!!
Brady, that's gotta be the coolest thing I have ever seen!
I want to see that snow in real life :(
Hehe!! That's sweet Connor!!
We got hit by another blizzard the day after that too!! The roads were covered so bad they pulled the plows from clearing streets to helping emergency vehicles only!! It was pretty fun driving my snowmobile down the freeway right through downtown!! Somehow the bars manage to stay open!!
That's it, I'm getting a winter house up north. And first thing i'm doing once i do is gettin a snowmobile!
Can you imagine snowmobiling through downtown Dallas? That would be awesome.
Here's a lil longer one!!^^^ That would be a blast!! Just as long a traffic was none existent!! There is a groomed, maintained state trail from here right to Minneapolis!! you can get anywhere in the state when the snow is sufficient and the lakes are frozen!!
That's a crazy video!
And snowmobiling anywhere? That's also crazy!
And the accent on whoever is taking in that video? Also crazy! Sorry, just not used to hearin that down here. :)
Reed, next year when you chase up here, you should come meet me :)
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Brady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never heard anyone else EVER that said rabbit rabbit on the first of the month!!!!
I feel complete now knowing that my mom didn't just make that up when I was a kid.
Crazy accent? I don't hear much of an accent. :-)
(I'm in Southern Ontario, so I probably speak with a very similar accent. Where are you, Connor?)
Tom, I live way down in Texas. We talk a little different from yall. :)
Brady, I'm still in shock. Rabbit Rabbit has been a tradition in my family for a long time, and I have never heard ANYONE say it besides us.
HAHA!!! That's funny!! I thought my mom was the only one who said that!! She says it's good luck!! We're all a buncha nutz up here!!
Accent?? what are ya talkin a boot??hehe
Connor ^^^
My sister used to say that too
I do love how y'all speak in Texas. We drove down to your neck of the woods (generally) this summer. Was a beautiful trip!
I was really, really hoping to see a tornado! (I'm not a stormchaser. Just a wannabee.) No luck though. We were on the road during the Greenville (Greenborough?) tornado, but nowhere near it.
That particular tornado I would not have wanted to see. Besides, it was at night.
My dad lives in Texas and we visit every year. Maybe one of these days I'll get lucky. Once I figure out what this GR3 thing is that y'all keep talking about.
I have always thought my mom made the whole rabbit rabbit thing up. She also says its for good luck. I just told her that I heard yall say it and she was goin "I told you I didn't make it up!!"
That's awesome...
What am I talkin a boot? (forgive me for this, i'm tryin to type a southern accent) Ah aint got no ah-dea where all yall coulda learned to talk like the woman in that there video. But shoot, yall sure got a lot o snow way up yonder, dontcha?
Ok that was stupid. i'm goin to bed now. Night yall!
That's Great Joe!! They're gonna have to change the name of that to Joe Surferpedia!! Lol My Mom says she seen it on a tv show!!=( WTF I thought it was something passed on to her from her mother!! =(
OK, I can wait a minute before I go to sleep. Where in Texas does your dad live?
BTW Tom, its Greensburg :)
He lives in Streetman, about 2 hrs south and slightly east of DFW.
(Cool, I just briefly lost power with a passing storm.)
Whoa.. here comes the rain!
(Sorry .. Greensburg. Scary storm, that.)
ROFL!!! OMG!!! The worst part is I had no prob reading that!! hehe WOW!! OK Gnite Connor!! I gotta run out too quick be back in a half!!
