A strong cold front will continue moving eastward across the central U.S. today, bringing the chance for severe storms from northeast MN southwest to the TX Panhandle.  Once again, low-level shear and instability will be limited, so straight-line winds and marginally severe hail will be the main threat.  The 4km WRF forecast composite reflectivity for this 8:00 pm CDT this evening is shown below.

http://wwwt.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/mmb/mmbpll/cent4km/v2/

The 4km WRF products (higher resolution than the operational WRF) are experimental, but have been a rather useful tool in predicting initiation and storm mode.  Check out the various precip products at the link above.

There are a bunch of reports out about tornadoes in England today ^^

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 10:55 AM #

The journalists are getting cocky over there now. A little fact-challenged too:

"England has the highest number of reported tornados per unit area in the world, leaving tornado hotspots such as Oklahoma – to which it is roughly equivalent in size - trailing in its wake."

England may have the highest number of reported tornadoes per unit area for any *country* in the world, when the US's entire area (including Alaska) is factored it, but it doesn't have more per area than just Oklahoma.

Wow!! I hope Tim can score some good pic's!!It's kinda nice having an eye over there!!

Yeah Joe, I'm waiting for the next outlook myself!! The last one said something about a lil stronger shear and instability farther north!!=) I'm hoping for a light show or some cool supercell pics!! And your right Joe!! Practice is over!! No more fun and games!! This is a mission now!!

Damn I always get the cool secret codes!! 711

Sitting here in Central IL, Under mostly sunny skies, and very humid conditions, watching some very fast moving midlevel clouds.

I like what the model shows going on, and hope i may get a isolated decent storm.

These Cumulus are moving reeeeal quick and also building/changing shape quickly.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 11:10 AM #

They probably get the little naders like we get here!! Probably mostly dust devils and landspouts! Where Oklahoma gets Wedges all the time!! They probably have a similar view to the locals around here!! " oh we never get tornado's here" so when they do happen everyone freaks out!!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 11:14 AM #

OK gets more per year than the UK does. OK needs to do something about these other countries talking smack!

Hey guys whats up today???

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 11:17 AM #

Ya but from what i get out of this is that its the number of reported tornadoes. So like 30 people could report 1 tornado.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Strike | September 24, 2007 @ 11:18 AM #

Brady, I hope for your sake that its not like here yesterday. Everything upcapped overnight, and I guess it was a decent lightning show, but overall I think for us northerners...... It's over till spring.

Sorry mang.

Im going to have to agree with ya Strike im in Ontario. Im under a slight risk tomorrow but not expecting much to happen.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 11:30 AM #

I could easily see some of that shark tooth scud I had Thursday being reported as a funnel!! I'd like to know how many reports were called in!! I imagine that stuff wouldn't be reported by Okie's!!

It's starting to get cloudy, and windy!! I was hoping for a lil more warmth!! 73f

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 11:34 AM #

Like they say later in the article, "An average of 33 tornados are reported annually in the UK." How that could leave Oklahoma "trailing in its wake" is a mystery to me! Maybe they are also adding in soccer hooligan-spouts.

Im looking foward to tomorrow. Im working until 3pm so i hope that will be able see something tomorrow.

I think we'll now for sure after this week!! looks like a little chance this weekend!! I thought my season was over 2 weeks ago!! But yeah I think this is gonna be it for the year!!
Then I'll be Brady The Nor'easter Chaser!!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 11:39 AM #

There are over 1800 tornadoes a year in the US. If my math is correct thats 36 per state. And im pretty sure Alaska doesnt get tornadoes because its so cold up there. I could be wrong. But not all states get that many tornadoes and with OK being in tornado alley im sure they probably get 40-50 tornadoes a year.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 11:54 AM #

Yep, Oklahoma gets over 50 per year. The journalist just mangled the facts. England does get more tornadoes per square mile than the US, but only after the whole area of the United States is factored in.

In fact I can see on the Torro website exactly where the journalist cut-and-pasted some of his/her wording from, before misinterpreting it.

Joe, you oughta email those guys who're spouting their misrepresented tornado factoids & set 'em straight. You got that Texas-style tornado off the Raleigh NC website & got answers from NOAA on the EF/F issue, so I say LET THEM HAVE IT!!! :D Make sure to say "bloody" somewhere in the message, too.

Remember that "novel" about the Superoutbreak that they had all confuzzeled too????

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 12:18 PM #

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By MynameisBen | September 24, 2007 @ 1:39 PM #

Im stilllll sitting at work here in Morton IL, but looking at the latest sattelite image, it appears there is a CU field building along the IL/IA border.

I am keeping a eye on this, although i think the mean storm motion will be away from me. Surface level winds 20mph+ with gusts of 30+ coming out of the S-SE and the temps are in the mid 80's, we'll have to see what happens.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 2:31 PM #

That was about the extent of the damage, so if there even was a tornado and not just a helluva gust!! I would say at the very most EF-0! I didn't miss much!
I'm gonna keep trying until I do get us a good hose!! Even if it takes til we're talking about Caleb's graduation !!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By tim jacobs | September 24, 2007 @ 2:34 PM #

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 4:07 PM #

That's a tough call... you could haul butt to Floodwood and catch it in about 30 minutes... but by then the other stuff just to the south of it could get better too

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 4:10 PM #

The thing headed toward Floodwood is the one that had the meso in it a few minutes ago, but the stuff just south of it is taller with more hail icons... that stuff is going to come right to you in one hour...

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 4:10 PM #

Thats exactly what I was thinking!! If I go North I'll do 53 straight north and catch it after it passes floodwood!! I can catch that good! I'm gonna wait a few more minutes!!

Tim J, NICE job with your slide show. Your footage was way better than what that online newspaper had! :D Those tornados were pretty photogenic, too!

Nice video Tim!

England is going to dominate Oklahoma in the number of tornadoes this year.

I'll be adding a blog entry this evening about the England outbreak.

Good luck to everyone chasing today!

Yeah, he drove right into the gust front but as you all saw on radar, it had pretty much died by that point... Look at how the lake is killing everything.

He said he's going to his favorite perch above Superior to watch for any filmable lightning like he did that one other time.

Look at that tornado-warned cell in Nebraska ^^^
Why can't that happen in Duluth? Huh? Huh?

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 7:08 PM #

Damn that lake any how!! A well!! When I hit that gust front I damn near blew off the road!! Leaves blowing everywhere got me a lil excited! but that was about it!!

Hwy 2 is all tore up just outta town so that took me longer than I wanted too! And yes believe it or not!! Hermantown rush hour!! Hwy 2 and 53 get pretty busy with all the rednecks heading home!! And none of em know how to drive!!

Hey guys im back did i miss anything at all.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 7:39 PM #

Well Brady, in retrospect, when I said earlier to wait for it to come to you, it didn't occur to me what a storm-killer the lake would be.

Mental note to self: if I'm ever storm-chasing in September near Lake Gitche Gumee, get away from it!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 7:44 PM #

Hey Matt!! Not a hole lot!! Not here anyway!!
Here's another pic I took!!

Great vid Tim!! I like your message at the end!! I'll take your advice!! The photos were great too!! I guess the only thing you and I can do is keep going at it!! Eventually the big stuff will come!!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 7:50 PM #

Its funny the when a tornado warning comes out somewere in there it says to if you see a funnel cloud or tornado seek shelter in a basement or small room.

Are warning when you see a funnel cloud or tornado is to get in your car and get within 1/4 mile of it.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 7:59 PM #

Hehe! Matt!! In order for me to see one I'm probably gonna have to kiss it!! Hard to get a view around here!!

I have seen a few funnels over da lake! but they're far an few apart!! Good for snow! Bad for tornadoes!!
another pic!!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 7:59 PM #

Yeah Matt, that is hilarious! I get a kick out of the videos where the dad hollers at his family to get down in the basement, but he himself hangs out upstairs trying to film it.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 8:14 PM #

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 8:19 PM #

Here's another!! ^^^
I'll tell ya Joe!! Even this lil run was fun!! This chasing chit is addicting!! I can see why Reed and Joel keep going at it!!
The more times I come back with no tornadoes, is just gonna make the first one better!! hehe

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 8:22 PM #

Ya Brady thats why im very happy about tomorrow if anything happens because my last chase was 3 weeks ago, it was also my first night chase. But ya i have to agree this chasing stuff is fun.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 8:37 PM #

I'll head back to my spot and see if I can get more lightning!!

look at how that stuff spits off of the back of that cell!! must be da lake!! hehe!!

Matt it is great, but I would have been chasing my tail without Joes info!! He puts me in the best part everytime!!

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 8:40 PM #

Even if I had my GR3 up and running That link to this place is great!! I love taking advantage of modern technology!! I really wanna chase Tornado Alley next spring, but I wanna get more prepared and a lil smarter before I make that trip!! Maybe Joe can come down and then we can tear up the planes TV.net style!! hehe

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 8:57 PM #

Really i think whats next for me is some nice stuff they call snow. Ill be out there in the middle of some nice snow storms this year.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 9:08 PM #

Man its quiet in here. I think i here crickets

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 9:08 PM #

There you go Matt, you have to practice that swing for launching a golf ball into the next tornado you find! You might get a half mile drive out of it.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 9:10 PM #

Brady what about snowmobile chasing for snowspouts? Somebody has to be the pioneer

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Matt | September 24, 2007 @ 9:10 PM #

Or it will spin around the tornado and knock me out cold

Anyways im out gottta go to work tomorrow morning

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 9:23 PM #

Lmao!! That would be a Caddy Shack moment!! Take care Matt!! Good luck tomorrow!!\

That's right... I gotta get a sticker for the SIV too! hehe

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Joe Surfer | September 24, 2007 @ 9:25 PM #

That seems only fair. If a tornado is launching golfball sized hail at you, why not launch hail sized golfballs back at the tornado?

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 24, 2007 @ 9:35 PM #

ROFL!!! Then you hear on the news about a buncha people who were injured by Golfballs raining on them!! lol

Too bad Reed didn't have a bucket of balls and a club when he captured the Manchester Wedge!! I'm sure he coulda hit that one!! I don't have any clubs, but I do have a nice Louiseville Slugger!!

Great video Tim! Very photogenic tornadoes for out there. I thought they'd be more wrapped in rain but they were high-contrast.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Reed | September 24, 2007 @ 11:54 PM #

Two tornadoes reported in NE today with that tornado-warned cell from earlier. From the lack of details in the reports I'd say they were probably not significant. Hopefully some pictures will surface.

More of the same today, but further east Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 25, 2007 @ 12:08 AM #

I had seen the warnings earlier, but not much has been discussed here about em!! Maybe something will surface!!

I've got to hand it to the SPC...if you overlay yesterdays precip over their projections, it's almost an exact match. Bueno, boys.
