The NWS in Grand Forks, ND has updated their stats on the August 26, 2007 tornado outbreak in ND/northwest MN, stating that at least 8 tornadoes occurred over this region!  More videos and photos will be added to the page below soon, but video of an INCREDIBLE 1/3 mile wide tornado from 15 miles W of Northwood was just added.  The link for the page dedicated to this event is below, along with the link to the video of the tornado.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/fgf/news/070826TORs/Aneta/RughLakeTOR_26Aug07_1.mpg

It appears that the tornado in the clip above was different from the Northwood tornado, and interestingly, had a SSW to NNE path despite a ESE storm motion.  The associated tornado cyclone must have been occluding rapidly to produce this path, and is consistent with its relatively short damage path.  A satellite image with the damage path is shown below, from the Grand Forks NWS site.  The Northwood EF4 tornado may have been produced by the storm immediately to the north of this one!

Here is a radar image that was posted on the blog that night from around 7:30 pm CDT.  I believe the rapidly intensifying storm to the WSW of Grand Forks is the one responsible for the EF3 in the video above, and the storm immediately to its north, moving ESE, eventually produced the Northwood EF4.  The two other supercells to the north also produced tornadoes, although not as large in size.  These storms may have been north of the LLJ core, and may have had less low-level shear to work with, or it could have been due to higher LCLs (cloud bases), or they did produce large tornadoes that just weren't observed.

Every year, there is a prolific tornado-producing event that we seem to overlook and decided not to chase, either because of the long driving distance or the ingredients came together at the last minute and were not forecast well by the models.  This event was one such tornado outbreak that we didn't chase, but it was forecast well by the models and was quite obvious several tornadoes would occur!  I definitely regret not chasing this event...

Meanwhile, a strong trough and associated 40+ knot low-level jet will bring a severe weather chance for the northwest Great Lakes Region today, but the storms will be in terrain not very conducive for storm chasing, with dense forest and even mountains in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Here is the SPC tornado probability map for their Day 1 Outlook:
In other news, a subtropical depression has developed in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, and is forecast to become a tropical storm in the next 12 hours, before making landfall on the MS Coast on Saturday.  Tropical storm warnings have been issued for the western FL Panhandle westward to the eastern LA Coast.  Stay tuned for updates!  It's an incredible day to be obsessed with weather.

Hey Reed!! I feel the same way!! If you remember I think I was contemplating if I should drive that far!! I think you and or Andrew told me to hold up because the models were showing much better chances in my area!! Both of your opinions I highly respect!! I'm just ticked because it did fire right in the predicted area which wasn't very big and I had a straight shot up Hwy2!! We'll get that one back!!! It was still fun cyber chasing it!!

Brady, don't feel too bad. It sounds like the tornado was rain-wrapped and you probably wouldn't have seen much, plus you would have stood a good chance of taking an air-ride in the TIV, lol.

The line that is going to erupt into the squall line later is now visible on radar in western Minnesota.

Time to go look at the models again. I like going OH MY GOSH when I see big-time shear potential. 8-O

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1999
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0134 PM CDT FRI SEP 21 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...EASTERN MINNESOTA INTO WESTERN/CENTRAL WI AND U.P.
OF MI

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...TORNADO WATCH LIKELY

VALID 211834Z - 212030Z

THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF DAMAGING WINDS/LARGE HAIL AND
PERHAPS A FEW TORNADOES IS EXPECTED TO QUICKLY INCREASE THROUGH
MID/LATE AFTERNOON FROM FAR EASTERN MN INTO WI/U.P. OF MI. CURRENT
THINKING IS THAT A TORNADO WATCH WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED BY AROUND
20Z.

WATER VAPOR IMAGERY FEATURES POTENT SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND STRONG
MID/UPPER JET CROSSING THE DAKOTAS INTO MN THIS AFTERNOON...WITH
STRONG DOWNSTREAM HEIGHT FALLS OVER THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY/WESTERN GREAT LAKES. ALONG/JUST BEHIND THE SURFACE COLD
FRONT...MID LEVEL CONVECTION HAS GRADUALLY INCREASED OVER THE PAST
1-2 HOURS ACROSS MN. WHILE SPECIAL 17Z OBSERVED SOUNDING FROM
MINNEAPOLIS STILL FEATURED A MID LEVEL CAPPING INVERSION /17C AT 775
MB/...SIGNIFICANT MOISTENING/CAP REMOVAL HAS OCCURRED SINCE THE 12Z
OBSERVED RAOB...MOST NOTABLY IN THE 775-850 MB LAYER. FURTHER
DESTABILIZATION/STRONG LINEAR FORCING SUGGEST THE CAP WILL EASILY BE
REMOVED OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS...WITH OBSERVATIONAL TRENDS AND
SHORT TERM DETERMINISTIC/SREF GUIDANCE SUGGESTING RAPID THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT/INTENSIFICATION IS LIKELY TO BEGIN BY AROUND 20Z-21Z
ACROSS FAR EASTERN MN INTO WESTERN WI. AS SAMPLED VIA REGIONAL
WSR-88D VWP DATA FROM MINNEAPOLIS/DULUTH/LA CROSSE...VERY STRONG
WIND FIELDS/LONG HODOGRAPHS THROUGH THE LOW-MID TROPOSPHERE WILL
DISTINCTLY PROMOTE A DAMAGING WIND THREAT...ENHANCED BY THE
POSSIBILITY OF SMALL BOWING SEGMENTS. LARGE HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE AS
WELL...AND A FEW TORNADOES CANNOT BE RULED OUT...EITHER VIA
QUASI-DISCRETE SUPERCELLS AND/OR LEWP EVOLUTION.

My predictions: 17 high-school field goal attempts will get blown wide, 482 Friday-night fishermen will get whitecapped back to the docks, and 3500 homes will lose power.

Actually I just glanced at a couple Wisconsin newspapers and they don't seem too concerned about it yet. Maybe that'll change if that tornado watch as mentioned in the mesoscale discussion goes into effect.

Hey, a nice person at SPC responded to the feedback about the F-scale stuff that's still in the advisories.

"The EF-scale in the product is a known issue, however, since this is a decodable product, we need to follow a change management process to make the correction."

A tornado watch (SAME code: TOA; sometimes referred to as a "red box" by meteorologists and storm chasers) is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes. A tornado watch therefore implies that it is also a severe thunderstorm watch. A tornado watch must not be confused with a tornado warning.

A watch does not mean that the severe weather is actually occurring, only that conditions have created a significant risk for it. If severe weather actually does occur, a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning will be issued.

Main Article: Particularly dangerous situation

In the event that a tornado watch is likely to lead to a major tornado outbreak along with possible destructive winds and hail, enhanced wording with the words particularly dangerous situation (PDS) can be added to the watch; this is occasionally issued

I think it's a squall line Joe. I know you didn't ask me but that's what I would call it because it's caused by the cold front and it's a solid line.

C:\Documents and Settings\andrew\My Documents\My Pictures\drylinesquall line.jpg

^^Here's a really good picture of a spring setup with dryline tornadic supercells followed by the cold front/squall line behind them.

I just found that in my files. Sheesh, haven't seen a radar looking like that in a LONG time.

Squall line... that sounds about right
If you go to tinypic.com, you can upload that pic... takes just a few seconds

Thanks Andrew! I feel like an idiot when I don't know the right vocabulary.

"Squall Line - A solid or nearly solid line or band of active thunderstorms."

PS, what I meant about uploading that pic is that since it's on your C-drive we can't view it yet

Ooops.

I suck at computer stuff. Sorry.

I guess I don't have the pic anymore, at least it won't open any more for me.

I found more good radar images of a dryline/squall line event though. Click my name. This is from Mike Hollingshead's site (incredible photography). If you scroll down about 3/4s of the way you'll see a great radar grab of dryline tornadic thunderstorms and a squall line behind them. A lot better than the pic I had.

Tim, tv.net allows a maximum of only 100 characters in the "Web Address" field... so your link got cut off and that's why it doesn't work! :-(

You could always use tinyurl.com to convert it to a shorter link and then post it again

Ah, got it!

I think you're right. Obviously I'm no expert but when everything is lined up so perfectly in a squall line it makes it seem unlikely for a tube to fall out! So far anyhow.

WOW that is a TEXTBOOK squall line.

Hose potential now shifts to the Gulf Coast. It looks like the center of the TD is moving right along the coast, with a little flare-up of convection around the center. This thing could be a prolific tornado producer...the breaks in the clouds in the outer bands are allowing good destabilization. We should be chasing this monster.

That was the extent of the damage I seen there! lol
Two cones tipped over!! when I went through Pine City the first time there was lots of leaves and small to medium branches scattered all over town!! There was also a decent tree split in half with a city worker picking it up (wonder if it was AJ) jk . next to that there was a few emergency vehilces at a house with there Cherries flashing, It made it kind of intense. I didn't see damage there so I bet it was irrelevant, but still intense!!
The people seemed to be moving around like nothing happened!!

Heres a pic I took this morning at work!! I'm uploading more!!

Hey guys..... Havn't been posting in awhile! Been busy w/ school:-D!!

Anyway, where is fall!!?!! It got up to 93 degrees today! It will be 91 tomorrow!! As a matter of fact, I don't see any true fall weather for quite some time....figures.

Weather notes: TD #10 has finally developed though unorganized. Expected to become a weak TS Jerry in the next 12 hours before making landfall. Jerry could influence oklahomas weather by the begining of next week.

TS Ivo continues to weaken of the west coast of Mexico.. If it holds together its moisture could make its way into oklahoma some time late next week..

Well that sums up my forecast. So whats going on in your neck of the woods??? Did I miss anything interesting?

I just dug out my old Fuji digital cam, loaded fresh batteries in it, planning to take some pics of the rainy mountains and load them in here, but the camera doesn't seem to be working. Doesn't surprise me since I haven't used it in a couple of years. Oh well

The part I don't understand about that story is that in her note, she said she was "out of water" (and food) and that when they found her as she was headed downstream, she was dehydrated. Excuse me but there is no shortage of water in the Cascades and by her own account she was headed "downstream" along water so there's no reason to be dehydrated. Maybe she only drinks bottled water even when dying of thirst or something.

Love those cloud pics, we don't get those around here. I'm charging up some new batteries just in case those last batteries were the problem, but even so now it's too dark. If I can get the camera going I'll see what I can do. If not, then that's that..

Wow Joe!! that really makes ya wonder!! You would almost think the water in the mountains would be healthier than bottled!! I heard somewhere that the water bottling companies are gonna have to start putting on the labels " this product comes from a municipal water supply." Aka Tap water!!

Here's one for Reed and AJ!
