Here is a video shot by locals in Cape Coral, FL of a water spout that developed over the Gulf of Mexico and came ashore, causing damage to residences and resorts. An associated press article concerning this tornado is shown below. Meanwhile, the SPC issued a slight risk for severe weather for today across parts of the Northern Plains...I'll be adding a blog update as this event unfolds.
CAPE CORAL -- As many as 150 homes were damaged by a powerful tornado that swept off the Gulf of Mexico and plowed into this southwest Florida city, officials said Monday. Only one person had minor injuries from flying debris.
At least 12 families were displaced after the tornado tossed cars down a street and damaged buildings at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Daniel Noah at the National Weather Service said the tornado started as a water spout over Fort Myers Beach and moved north into Cape Coral. He estimated the winds speeds were between 90 and 110 mph.
Cape Coral's chief inspector, Bill Selvia, told the News-Press of Fort Myers on Monday that the final damage estimate could be in the millions of dollars.
The twister ripped part of the roof off Jessica Gibson's apartment building.
"Water was pouring in through the windows, it soaked everything, everything will be ruined," said Gibson, one of the displaced residents.
At the Silver Sands Resort, the tornado toppled the 1,500-pound tiki bar, knocked over fencing and tore the roof off two units, owner Tom Groves said.
"It threw all the chairs into the pool — just made a general mess," Groves said.
About 3,500 Lee County Electric Cooperative customers lost power in the thunderstorms that spawned the tornado.

hey first comment lol finnaly :D:D anything look worth chasing at all then reed?
That's a great vid!! WoW!! They need a WIV down there!! hehe
Hey Reed,
My dad and I are chasing today! We are on our way to SD now. Looks pretty good for some tornadic supercells if the cap can be broken which I thought it should be able too.
great video reed!!
Whatre the chances of anything sever makin it to the mankato area, id so want to head out after this storm but itd be like a 4 hours drive :( and i have a few classes today..
Nice!
The RUC definitely looks very interesting. It has two intense cells firing just before 00z in extreme southeast SD, northeast NE, and southwest MN.
The shear is impressive too.
Good luck chasing! I'll be adding a post about today soon...I just had to get that video up!
im out guys will be back on leter hope it goes well for you and hope somethings happens see ya!!!
Hopefully somethng can happen near the middle of the state!! Like always, I'll be running on limited fuel again!!
...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 100 PM EDT FOR
NORTHWESTERN NASSAU COUNTY...
AT 1212 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR CONTINUED TO
INDICATE A TORNADO HEADING FOR THE JUNCTION OF COUNTY ROAD 108 AND U
S HIGHWAY 1 NEAR HILLIARD. THIS TORNADO WAS MOVING NORTHWEST AT 10
MPH.
ALL INDICATIONS FROM WEATHER SERVICE RADAR ARE THAT THIS IS A STRONG
TORNADO CURRENTLY MOVING TOWARD MORE HEAVILY POPULATED AREAS.
SEEK SHELTER NOW! USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO COVER YOUR BODY AND
ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.
UMMMMM NOT GOOD!
wow!! The severe stuff is starting to take aim on us!!
Good Luck Michael!! Hope you and your dad stay safe and can make your trip a sucess!!
OOOH!! I hear thunder!!!
Hey Ryan, that tornado warning got canceled one minute before you posted it. Figures, huh?
1242 PM EDT THU SEP 20 2007
...THE TORNADO WARNING FOR NORTHWESTERN NASSAU COUNTY IS CANCELLED...
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR NO LONGER INDICATES THE
POSSIBILITY OF A TORNADO.
WOW, been watching this storm since 7am and its still going strong. The tail of it looks to be hooking towards the SE, I might be getting a look at the clouds from it real soon by the looks of the radar imagery.
This must be why they issued that Florida warning ^
There was a brief -45kt/+45kt couplet along with a TVS signal.
Hey Joe!! How are things??
I'll be leaving work in an hour or two!! let's pray this stuff don't crap out this time!!
Whur ya headin? St. Cloud again? You ought to just move there.
I forgot to post this screenshot of Hurricane Humberto coming ashore last week ^^^
Is it just me, or does anybody else see a buffalo-like "monster" in there? Two mesos for eyes; nostrils; a big smile on its face; and you can see its two front legs stepping forward. BRRR! I forgot to alert the authorities at the time, though.
I'm willing to bet I'll end up there!!hehe It's probably as good of a place as any to start from!! this stuff coming to me is getting uglier!!
Back...just got back to my house...yea joe gotta love it right....i just saw that wording and i was liwk wow...all i know is hopefully this mcs...that dreaded word...didnt ruin all the tornado chances....i kinda think brady might be outta luck in MN...but SD is the place to be
It looks like the southern end of that storm system might pass right over Andrew in an hour and a half, if things hold
Yea doesnt look all that horribly bad though...just your common severe warned cells....like i said...hopefully this thing wont ruin our show later on
hey guys im back wow brady seems as if your luck might be in today and joe yeh i can see that in hurricane humberto aswell lol :P
Joe ... you might want to seek professional help next time you have a buffalo sighting.
...
;-P

Yeah!! Figures the tornado outlook would keep getting smaller and smaller! It looks like this strong stuff is gonna go south of me! =( there's a little thunder here now!!
wow quiet night well is at the moment....
Flood watch just north of me!! bout time it gets wet around here!!
I think these hail signatures are gonna go just south of here!!
Yeah Ryan I think your right!! I'll see what these guys say before I head out!!
Ha-ha Tim, it's only early afternoon here! AJ, Caleb & those guys are still in school, and most everyone else is at work. It always cracks me up how you & Cors (who is in Amsterdam) have to put up with the time difference. Everything is usually just getting started here when it's waaay past bedtime in Europe! :D
That waterspout/tornado video is pretty cool, by the way. It is always interesting to see/hear how other people react when something like that is going down, especially if its the first time they've ever seen one before.
Like that idiot in Chicago Heidi, " It's just a tornado. That's what everyones worried about. It aint nothing!!" or what ever he said!!
This MCS is moving well too slow.... It is definitally killing the tornado chances for this afternoon. Cloud Cover is still very prevalent over the eastern Dakata's. Not looking good. :(
oh yeh never thought about the time difference lol....heidi you have no idea how tierd i am im falling asleep in my classes lol but wouldn't miss this for anything i think this is great:P
Agreed Travis, except check out the southwest corner of MN. If I were a chaser I would be parked at the Iowa/MN/SD point. I think we might see some stuff down there before dark.
My dad and I agree with you Andrew we are going to head to Sioux Falls and hang out there as up north it doesn't look to good at this point. Conditions are extremely favorable in that area right now and we are just south of Sioux Falls and it is sunny, humid, and we have SE winds screaming in.
How are things in Anoka Andrew??
I'm gonna head home now and get ready 2 roll!! I don't think I'll be able to go that far!=( Tomorrows outlook looks better for me. No way in hell I can get out of work!!=( Figures!!
Hey Andrew, yes that may be possible, but I think the problem with extreme SW MN, & Iowa, is it being too far south of the warm front, with less wind sheer and not being near the (spc term) triple point. But who knows Im no expert. Reed, you have any imput on this?
Triple point (I love that term)
Michael I know things can get rather busy and exciting during a chase but if you could it would be really cool to update us on here on what's going on.
This reminds me of 9/16/06. But not as big of a set up. Have you guys noticed all the gravity waves over South Dakota on satellite? Cool stuff.
Brady we have a nice roll cloud off to the west but according to radar there's nothing behind it. Everything is north. There's what looks like a nice bow structure between us and Hinkley and on velocity it looks like it is kicking up some dust.
If you guys think I shouldn't waste my time, let me know!! Keep in mind the last time I got talked out of going was the night of the Northwood storm!!
Great target Michael.
Have you seen the new RUC? It's going nuts with firing convection from central MN SSW to southeast SD. If that verfies things could get very interesting this afternoon.
Brady, if you can I'd head southwest...even central MN has a chance if things recover as forecast by the RUC. Stay safe out there.
the cell going over MN looks amazing on gr3 !!!
Ya if I was going to head out I think I would head towards the Montevideo area.
Slight risk of me seeing storms today and possibly saturday and sunday! Doubt I will thought.

OMG! I just talked to my mom, she is with her work team driving through the down of St. Josheph just north west of St. Cloud. She says it is not raining right now but the sky is just BLACK with alot of cloud to ground lightning, and she said there driving right into it... crazy Im actually kinda scared for her... and kinda jealious at the same time.
Here comes the lightning!! I won't be able to catch that if I wanted to!! I'll be outta internet on the road!! would someone wanna call me with info?? Joe??

Hey Reed!! Joe gave me your cell# last time I was down there!! I think I threw it out on the receipt that I wrote it on!! If anyone wants to help me out!! 218-269-0657!!
She is definitally within 10miles of where that funnel cloud was spotted. She doesent have a camara, that was the second thing I asked her, you can only guess what the first was.
Brady, go soon cuz its getting crazy!
Yeah tell your mom that i said GET IN A DITCH!!!!!!!
There's another tornado warning near Willmar.
Brady, I'll call ya if I can! You can get Reed's cell number from the Media link at top.
Yeah I think this may happen afterall. I am with you Heidi I am very surprised there is no MD up yet for this area, I think they will have to issue one shortly. I would keep my eye on this new cell forming near Montievideo heading towards Wilmar.

The new outlook just came out, doesn't look much different than the last one...
Travis! Have her call it in! I haven't seen anything on the warnings except doppler indicated. Someone might want to know this!
Travis: Which storm is she watching? East of St. Cloud?
What the heck...i lay down for like an hour...and now we have warnings out...lol...are things starting to initiate? Or just a small area...

That cell looks fairly weak compared to the ones east. No TVS or anything.
True, but even the popcorn showers are going to want to rotate bad today, lol.
I cant believe SPC hasent put anything out... somebody must have fell asleep at their computer or something LOL :)
Travis I'm just wondering if these storms aren't still a bit elevated, and that's why SPC is not putting out stronger outlooks. It's seems that way to me when I look at base and composite scans. But I don't have grlevel anymore so what the heck do I know. Even the elevated storms have a shot today though.
Notice how they keep developing on the SW tail of the storms. Out flow is going to fire off more storms and fast
since the dewpoint has really jumped here, up to 70 and the
has climbed to 85. Winds out of the south are really blowing here.
Finally! An MD. Looks like southern MN could see the roughest stuff. All I know is that it is still in the 60s here (it's almost CHILLY) in the north metro and in the mid 80s down there, so the boundary is somewhere between here and extreme southern MN.
AREAS AFFECTED...SRN MN
CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE
VALID 202016Z - 202215Z
SRN MN IS BEING MONITORED FOR SURFACE BASED THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT. POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING VERY LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED TORNADOES. TRENDS ARE BEING
MONITORED FOR A POSSIBLE TORNADO WATCH.
CLUSTER OF ELEVATED STORMS CONTINUES PROGRESSING EWD THROUGH E CNTRL
MN CAPABLE OF MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL. AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY EMANATING
FROM THIS ACTIVITY HAS SHIFTED SWD INTO SRN MN REINFORCING THE
BOUNDARY ALREADY IN PLACE OVER THIS REGION. NEW STORMS ARE
DEVELOPING OVER CHIPPEWA COUNTY APPARENTLY ALONG WRN END OF THE
OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WHERE LIFT AND THETA-E ADVECTION ARE MAXIMIZED
ALONG 60+ KT SWLY LOW LEVEL JET. THE WARM SECTOR CONTINUES TO
DESTABILIZE WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING INTO THE 80S AND DEWPOINTS
RISING INTO THE 60S CONTRIBUTING TO MLCAPE FROM 2000 TO 2500 J/KG
OVER SWRN MN. STORMS DEVELOPING ALONG THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ARE IN
CLOSE PROXIMITY TO FEED OF UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER AIR AND MAY
INTENSIFY AS THEY DEVELOP EWD. DEEP LAYER SHEAR AND LOW LEVEL
HODOGRAPHS ALONG THE LOW LEVEL JET AXIS OVER SRN MN ARE FAVORABLE
FOR SUPERCELLS WITH LOW LEVEL MESOCYCLONES CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE
HAIL AND TORNADOES WITH ANY SURFACE BASED STORMS THAT MANAGE TO
DEVELOP. SPACIAL EXTENT OF TORNADO THREAT WILL LIKELY BE LIMITED BY
SHARPLY COOLER AIR NORTH OF OUTFLOW BOUNDARY...SUGGESTING BEST
TORNADIC POTENTIAL WILL BE WITH STORMS THAT CAN MOVE EWD ALONG THE
BOUNDARY
Yeah travis.... is your mom still on that tornado?
She believes the Tornado has dissipated and moved to her east beyond a tree line.
You're going to buy her a CAMERA phone for Christmas, right?
Unbelieveable I drive for hours looking for these things and she just happens to stumble upon one on a business trip of all things. Crazy
LOL travis, thats the way things normally work....i got a funny feeling MN isnt gonna be the only game in town...i think where michael is right near the borders of MN IA and SD is gonna blow up anytime soon now...
Guys, if the models are right, things are going to be getting VERY interesting in SW MN and SE SD in a few hours. Check out this site and look at the RUC Precip. for 3 hrs, and also the winds - LOOK AT THE SHEAR!!!!!

Heidi it def. looks insane..just if everything can come together....we could be in for some big time trouble...
Hey everyone I am in Sioux Falls at a Flying J and this a very nice cu field now to my west and there have been a few tries at towers but the cap is still strong. We still have a few more hours before ths show! I'll keep updating as frequently as I can!!
Eek that big cell is bee-lining right for ME.
Andrew, where are you again?? I gotta keep my Minny people in order! :D
Hey Michael O., what service do you use for internet access while chasing?
North metro near Anoka.
Is it ok for an Okie to eat okra in Anoka?
That thing might get pushed north of you and peter out like the last one did, Andrew.
Hey Michael-
Good luck today... you're in the perfect spot. I just started a NOW thread over on ST, keep us posted. There are some insane shear values out there right now, if anything can remain discrete, it could definitely yield a powerful tornado.
- Chad
ps- when the tube drops, make sure you tell your dad that this is his bday present from you :)
Joe, I think it's rooted in the boundary. I don't think it's gonna peter out. I think it's gonna get more nuts. Just my opinion.
Anyone talk to Brady recently? If he takes his usual route, he should run right into some fun.
Andrew, I think this cell might miss us to the north and west.
Yeah, I just called Brady. He's heading south, going to try to intercept that tornado-warned cell that is aiming for Hinckley, then will try to catch the next one coming out of Willmar.
Andrew - duh! I knew that because of the night when everything went over-top of your place. I can't believe I asked you that! :D

You guys think any storms are going to initiate more south of the current storms? In Mankato i can just see the strong cloud build up of that southernmost storm but its just too far to go..:(
wow MN seems to be getting a lot tonight im sure brady will get something .....
Ah,,, Travis.. if you haven't gone anywhere yet don't go too far. Check out the new convection to the south.
heidi your right all the good stuff does happen to late for me and cors.....im off now getting to tierd :( hope it goes well for you all see ya!!!
Tim you can always catch up in the morning. Maybe we'll still be talking about it then! :D
Andrew, Can you see that cell approaching or are the low-level clouds messing up the view. How about your current conditions - wind, temp. etc.
Joe in Mankato - it looks like the models are indicating that the storms are most likely to be forming in the same areas where they have already been, and southwest toward Souix Falls. That doesn't sound too good for your chances, but you'll no doubt have one heck of a light show as soon as it gets dark (if that's any consolation!).
If only Brady had left 10 minutes earlier he would have been closer to this one
