Hey Reed and T-Vids crew!

Thanks for the blog update. I'm in position in Wenzhou now and expecting landfall in about 9 hours. Agencies all going for more or less a direct hit on my location. It's gonna be middle of the night local time which sucks but hopefully I'll still be able to film the windows buckling and the winds roaring!

More updates to come.....

Hold on tight, James! 8-O We look forward to seeing your footage!

Here's what the AP is saying:
SHANGHAI, China - China evacuated 200,000 people on Tuesday and closed schools in its largest city to prepare for what forecasters say will be the most powerful typhoon to hit Shanghai in a decade.

The fringes of Typhoon Wipha lashed northern Taiwan, where schools, offices and the stock market closed. A construction worker was killed when the storm's winds — projected to reach 180 mph at the storm's height — knocked down scaffolding, Taiwan's Disaster Relief Center said.

City authorities ordered schools closed Wednesday in Shanghai, a city of more than 20 million and China's financial hub. Chinese state-run television showed families being evacuated from their fishing boats and other vessels. Shopkeepers stacked sand bags to prevent flooding as drains clogged amid torrential rains.

The typhoon, whipping up waves up to 36 feet high, was moving northwest toward the Chinese mainland. Weather reports forecast it would make landfall south of Shanghai early Wednesday morning.

Wipha, a woman's name in Thai, was upgraded from a tropical storm Monday.

"The typhoon is very likely to develop into the worst one in recent years," said a man who answered the phone at the city's meteorological bureau. As is common with Chinese officials, the man identified himself only by his surname, Fu.

Shanghai and the coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian to the south issued typhoon warnings requiring all vessels to return to shore or change course to avoid the storm, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Some 200,000 people living in coastal or low-lying rural areas of Shanghai were being evacuated, as were parts of Zhejiang, Xinhua said.

It said nearly 30,000 fishing boats in the province had taken shelter in port by late Monday and ferry service with outlying islands was suspended.

The deadliest storm to hit the China coast in recent years was Typhoon Winnie in 1997, which killed 236 people. Typhoon Rananim, with winds of more than 100 mph, was the strongest typhoon to hit the Chinese mainland since 1956, killing nearly 200 people.

The Elie tornado was on the ground for about 35 minutes, and traveled for a distance of about 5.5 km. Damage occurred in a swath up to 300 metres wide. Wind speeds are estimated to have reached between 420 to 510 km/h when the tornado was at its most intense.

insane! you knew it was intense from the insane ground circulation in some of the videos on you tube.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 4:34 PM #

And the thing is that tornado wasnt that big in size. Just proves they dont have to be 2 miles wide to be powerful tornados.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Strike | September 18, 2007 @ 4:36 PM #

I guess Canada doesn't particularly read David Reimer's posts at all.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 4:39 PM #

Yeah!! Andrew!! I'm still a little ticked I didn't chase that night!! I had got some ok lightning vid of that storm as it passed over at about 4:30am!! Here's a crappy screenshot I got from that night!!^^

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 4:41 PM #

I just read the first link Gus posted, and I have a question for you Canadian folks: What does it mean to say "When the hydro goes off?" Is "hydro" electricity? an alarm? a siren? Somebody tell us?

(I'm having trouble with tags in my text, so sorry if this ends up looking funny.)

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 4:42 PM #

Hehe!! And another while I'm at it!!

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 4:42 PM #

Ya Heidi it means electricty

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 4:44 PM #

Thanks Matt - that was my first guess, but I wanted to make sure. I had never seen/heard electricity called hydro before. (obviously) :D

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Strike | September 18, 2007 @ 4:46 PM #

Heidi: hydro = hydroelectric power

We harness our rivers for electricity.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By tim jacobs | September 18, 2007 @ 4:49 PM #

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 4:50 PM #

Yeah, Strike, I kind of suspected that! :D We do that sort of thing here too (especially in Arkansas) but we still use way too much coal power.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 4:53 PM #

Ya to bad the houses are in the way thought. If i had my car at that time i would have chased that storm. But didnt get my car until the end of July.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By tim jacobs | September 18, 2007 @ 4:55 PM #

ohh just a bit late then....did anything come of that storm do you know?

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 4:56 PM #

Great pic Matt!! Is there any lakes or water near that cloud?? Sometimes after a quick rain, clouds like that lift up from the bay and the lake just south of me!!

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 4:58 PM #

were the clouds lifting or rotating at all??

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 4:59 PM #

Tim- Im not sure if anything came out of that storm because when i took that pic the storm was about to end for my area anyway.

Brady- No the closet lake to me is lake simcoe which is about 30 minutes away.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 5:00 PM #

Brady i could tell if they were rotating from were i was and the lack of experience that i had then and still do wasnt the greatest.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Matt | September 18, 2007 @ 5:01 PM #

Oh and i forgot to mention lake Ontario which is about 1.5 hours away

Very cool Brady! To quote Dick McGowan, the chaser in Olathe, Kansas, I am such a "structure whore". lol It doesn't have to produce any rain or wind, but if it looks extremely cool, I'm enthralled anyways. ;)

For those of you with GR3, play the loop on the CR 248 out of Duluth - you can see the rotation. This is EF-0, EF-1 type stuff, but still, Brady is DESPERATE!!! :-D

Since this mean the elie tornado was an F5 this should be put up on the main page.
Just think tornado videos.net chased the strongest bunch of twisters in Canadian history.

Ryan, you should write down your password and then when you go to "the fiancees house" you can permanantly download it there. :D

The major news networks are basically not covering the typhoon. I just tried to get an update by checking CNN, etc., and they still have the same AP story up that was on there early this morning. Sheesh. :-/

NEARLY STATIONARY

That's always some wordage that worries me, especially when there's lots of rain involved. It floods down here too easily, like it did last nite with that gully-washer we had.

*chirp-chirp

So does anyone know where braddddy is?

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 9:20 PM #

Yeah AJ, they have flash flood warnings out for that area now too. The tornado warning has been dropped, almost as soon as I posted it!

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 9:22 PM #

I think we were left to assume that he had taken off after the tornado-warned storm to his northeast. How he accomplished this without gasoline funds remains to be seen, however.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Heidi | September 18, 2007 @ 9:23 PM #

that should have said northwest, not northeast. :P

the code is VERY close to my last zipcode this time - 85642 :D

I was just watching bradys video and my video buffered on a awesome lightning shot...i got a print screen...and saved to to windows clipbook...showed i edit it out and save the pic for him? and if so i kinda suck with this type of shit.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Strike | September 18, 2007 @ 9:42 PM #

Anyone watching that line in Kansas right now?

Looks interesting.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By AJ | September 18, 2007 @ 9:46 PM #

Yeah Strike, I saw it. It went off on my SwiftWX. There's some flood watches and the sort, but nothing really serious, like rotation or a gust front... lol

Hopefully Brady isn't stuck with an empty tank somewhere. hehe

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Strike | September 18, 2007 @ 9:48 PM #

He always seems to have fuel issues.

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By AJ | September 18, 2007 @ 9:56 PM #

Well, hope he gets back soon.

I'm out for the nite guys, laters!!

HEHE!! Yeah! It's a lil wet here!! I was hoping there would be some lightning! Not the case!!=( I just went passed Floodwood a little bit!! I know I would have never caught that storm!! I seen a cloud that was straight verticle, Huge as hell and almost all the way to the ground!! It's scared the S@#@t outta me!! The wind picked up for a min then it just kinda went really horizontal and just spread out !!Could it have been a funnel?? I've never seen a cloud like that before!!

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 11:43 PM #

Hey! Great job on the pic Ben!! I wish I coulda done a little better on the lightning ( some streaks woulda been nice)!!
I was perfectly between 3 storms, one to my north, one west, and one south so I didn't wanna move!!

I don't know what that was I just seen, but it was freaky!!

Typhoon Wipha closing in on China -- James Reynolds planning intercept Comment Posted By Brady MN | September 18, 2007 @ 11:48 PM #
