Unfortunately, we have been facing significant problems with "spammers" and others with negative intentions on our new live chat feature over the last few days, so we have been forced to temporarily disable our live chat community until we implement a membership system next week. The membership system is the only viable option to maintain a professional community for weather enthusiasts, meteorologists, and storm chasers. The membership system will also be in line with our plans of implementing a forum in the very near future, as well as many other networking features that will enable members to share their weather photos, experiences, and knowledge with the world!
Members will have the option of posting on the blog, participating in the live chat and forum, and other advantages. This system will act to filter out spammers, those looking for a platform to spread misinformation and threats, and anyone else with negative intentions for our community of weather enthusiasts.
Stay tuned for the membership access this week, as well as the many additional exciting features we plan to add in the near future!

Personally I think the membership idea is the best way to go. I think the plans for this site are awesome and welcome them with open arms. It's not really a hassle at all this day in age to have a username and password.

Good deal. People usually behave differently when their IP can be banned. It's a shame we can't place a spammer at ground zero when the F5 comes by.
As expected, the cells in northwest IA have congealed into a linear MCS rather quickly...not having a chance to produce.
We'll see if a supercell can develop on the south end of the line. The shear might be good enough for them to break up.

My backyard is in Western Kansas, and it's looking pretty nice over here. There is a lot of lightning with this storm, which is always nice opportunity for stills ;)

Yeah the membership setup will be a lot easier to regulate. We want to have a community maintained extensively by the users...so in order to do that we knew we'd have to move towards a membership anyway.

I don't understand. I didn't see all the "crap" in the chat because I haven't used it (yet) but I just don't get it.
If they are enthusiasts and TV.net is full of enthusiasts then should we (they, whatever) be sharing ideas and info etc? Isn't the overall goal of all of us (well, I am a novice, but weather entusiasts in general) to make better predictions and help people survive extreme weather (as well as get some really, really cool video)?
Why would a group like OWS "spam" anything here? It is illogical for any groups like this to be "fighting" each other in any way. If two parties disagree on a model or something should they not just explain why they disagree and have a discussion about that?

James it was childish insults, vulgarity, physical threats, and intentionally trying to ruin this blog and chat room for others.
There is no "fight" or "disagreement" as that would imply two parties on somewhat equal footing. It's a couple of weirdos who have a history of getting kicked off every storm forum on the internet. They just happened to target tv.net because tv.net is popular.

This is hard to explain Avery. I have afriend named Avery as well. So cool.
But I don't use the traditional model stuff you all use.
This is the story.
June 15, 2003 I was hit by lightning in San Antonio,TX. A week after that I began seeing satellite images, realtime obs data, and recognizing a flow pattern. This allows me to create my own model in my head like a super computer. The doctor says I am a Savant as my brain does compute 3x as fast as a normal person. Many Savants out there do different things, but I am in tune to the weather.
I can take satellite/radar, etc and spin them ahead to figure out what is going to happen. Almost like my brain produces it's own weather model aside from the ones you guys use. I do this all the time in my website for forecasting, and it seems some areas really work.
Other than what happened to me being struck by lightning, and having a very fast brain because of it, I don't know what else to say.
It's fun, but trust me, it's not easy for me. I refuse to go to school and learn the way traditional Meteorologists forecast. I do my own stuff, and it seems to be a steady incline up. Therefore, i'll never get a degree in this field, but will continue studying it, and hopefully showing one is not needed.
Meteorology is not understanded fully, and many closed doors that need to be open. There is no such thing as a Professional Meteorology, or to be called a Meteorologist you need a degree. That just doesn't fly with this kind of science. I am a Meteorologist, but of a different kind I feel.
I am a Meteorologist Savant.
I learned by myself, and some of these pop in my head. I can't think faster than my brain at times, so yes, weird stuff comes from it, but it seems to work.

I still think the 2% tornado in the Western TX Panhandle is overdone , and my maps show nothing of the sort.
Hope this explained a bit more about how I do things.
I'll refrain from posting the really incriminating threats since much of their verbage is highly inappropriate for our younger audience, but since you asked James...and to avoid any confusion...Below is an example of one of the conversations on the OWS chat. "Meteorologist" being Kevin Martin.. He has sent similar threats to several well-known meteorologists and storm chasers on other popular forums, and has even related what he plans to do to Columbine! While no one takes this guy seriously, these types of threats cannot be ignored.

This is not someone we want to associate with, and I'm hoping that by implementing the membership system we can move on in our development of a safe and informative weather community, and not waste any more of our time protecting our website from spammers and lunatics who have nothing better to do with their time.
To fill it in a little more, James, on another forum he once claimed to have a masters degree in meteorology, even though he has taken only a single class (Met 101) and it was through an online university.

Ive been a longtime and regular visitor here - havent posted lately but I have been reading the comments. I have not, however, been on the now pulled chat.
This whole OWS thing is pathetic. About a month and a half ago when "meteorologist" Kevin Martin freaked out and had all of those weird dellusions of grandeur, claiming to have predicted Reeds Manitoba tornado etc etc, I decided to go look at OWS to see what it was. Here are a couple of observations:
First of all, the site itself appears to have been written by a first grader. If anyone wants a good laugh dig around and find his biography on there.
Second - has anyone seen all of the self assigned titles Kevin Martin has put on himself? Here they are, and Im sure you will get a laugh out of them:

Third - whats with all of those weird pictures of the OWS "storm chasers" and crew? Kind of creepy.
The internet always has a way of bringing people like this out of the woodwork. It is too bad that someone like Reed who is a highly educated meteorologist and very successful storm chaser has to constantly lock horns with someone like Kevin Martin, who has arbitrarily assigned himself the title of meteorologist and has absolutely zero credibility.
Reed at this point I would consider reporting KM to his ISP for harassment, and unfortunately, banning his entire subnet. Sometimes innocent people have to suffer for the bad behavior of bad apples like Kevin Martin.

Mike, I agree. This is an unfortunate thing to have happen, but it is expected when you have an online chat room. These OWS guys will pay for their immaturity and selfishness. And to quote Dale earlier, that was written with class :)

I have read the posts and while I can't disagree on all of them nor agree, I will put my two cents in.
Mike - Please stay out of publically calling in the laughing mobile on Kevin's site. His site hits over half a million hits each month and he is good at the weather and forecasts. I will also tell you never to comment on the OWS storm chasers as I am one of those chasers you are talking about and you are no better than Kevin if you will make accusations like that toward one's you do not know. Out of the four people, the one's who have no problems with Reed or the TV.net team is Myself (Brian Martin) and Nick Mitchell (Storm Chaser). We are two out of four people on that page who accept this website for what it is and the people in it. So please, in the future, do not let me or other people who DONT deserve it; see your trashy typing it was very unecessary thank you.
To AJ, OWS Guys you should be referring to makes it sound alot like ALL of the OWS guys and it is very hard to figure out who you are talking about. If you are referring to Kevin Martin and Joshua Young, this is fine. Brian Martin and Nick Mitchell have been very nice about this whole thing and professional.
To everyone - Even though I may have slipped once with TV.net and Reed, I have already stated the obvious that I feel bad enough for being a jerk at one point but we are all human and mistakes can be made up as long as they are forgiven and not done again. I have chosen in all professionalism and faith from God what I have chosen and to hate is to judge and honestly I dont hate anyone on the team at all. I regret saying ONE bad thing, but I floated that sin down the river of forgiveness and was forgiven.
To Don G. - You may not have a good impression on OWS, but I would appreciate you evaluating what you say and do to other OWS people. Myself and Nick were banned from the chat for no reason and this set off a very alarming issue.. one issue such to why other "kids" from the OWS are flaming this web site.

Mike, it is alright. I love weather as much as the next person. But of course now being a part of the OWS, its getting to be really hard to enjoy it. I will have to deal with it but I am moving to Texas shortly where I will become a solo chaser until I can join a team or just enjoy chasing with friends I can make here :) Nick and myself were very upset but we kept very cool about it and are letting things blow over. I do agree that chatters from the OWS are at fault for everything, it was unfortunate to see it and it is sad to be a part of a weather name "OWS" company that carries such a rep. I wear my OWS Chaser shirt with me on all my storm chases and the logo is on there.. Now I am not sure because I don't want to be identified and a target for prairrie dog hunting in the plains.
Brian, I had no intention of chastising you in public, and I apologize. I forgot to do my research, as any good chaser would do :) I am sorry that you were under the gun during this. I am sure Reed and others had no intention of making you seem at fault. Your apology is accepted, and at least I forgive you. And for the record, I think you're too big to be a prairie dog target ;)

Dis-associate yourself from ows. Don't ever go on the chat again. Burn your ows logo. Cause that's the only way anyone with a brain on this green earth is ever going to think about taking you seriously. And please for the love of pete, don't bring god into this. I'm sure even he would be running away from this mess as fast as he could.
Actions speak a lot louder than words. In your case, all you and Nick have to do is go out and prove what you just said about yourselves by how you act and who you associate with. How can I or anyone else possibly believe what you just said about yourself when you are still associated with the crap on that site? You expect people to just let that junk slide? Hey Conor! Texas is coming fast and from California to Texas, this should be a big move! I'll be in Spring, TX in the Fall of 2007 finally moved and ready to start fresh. Spring, TX is a nice little town North Northwest of Houston :) Cant wait! Safe from a tornado ripping my house up but CLOSE enough for the action!!! :) I know i'll be seeing many chasers out there so I can't wait to get in on the action. Driving from Cali to the midwest is never fun.. and the drive back is horrible cause the excitement is all gone. thanks for the welcome Conor! I can't wait for the move!
No way, Spring? I have a friend that just moved there! I'm up by Dallas, so maybe I'll get to se you out there sometime next April.

Wow no way man, that is cool! Thats like the fourth person I know now that has moved to Spring. Must be realyl really nice everywhere! Sounds exciting. Yeah I will for sure be seeing a lot of people. Right now my fiance wants to learn about storm chasing and the weathr so when we both go out on the field and do our photography and taping, she knows what she is looking at. I'd teach her but its better a video she can watch will help her learn. If anyone has the perfect Newbie Video in mind please let me know! :) Im talking a real newbie video explaining rain, hail, updrafts, wallclouds, mesos, thunderheads, anvils, winds, etc. Thanks again!

Hi Jackie..the membership will be available to anyone! The only negative now is that a person who just wants to stop by the site and post a single comment can no longer do so without applying for a membership. But it's the only way to maintain a secure chat/blog and eventual forum.
Don't worry Reed, you'll get 100s of sign-ups.
