A lunar eclipse will be visible tonight across the entire U.S., with the central U.S. experiencing the greatest shadow (thanks to Dick M for making us aware of this!). While I'm not familiar at all with the science of eclipses at all, it appears from the diagram below (from Spaceweather.com), that the eclipse will be visible from the eastern U.S. between 9:52 and 11:22 UTC; from the central U.S. between 11:22 UTC and 12:23 UTC; and along the West Coast shortly thereafter. Dick McGowan will be photographing the entire evolution of the eclipse, and will be submitting his photos to Spaceweather.com. Good luck to anyone photographing this!
Here is a time sequence of photographs of a lunar eclipse in October 2004 in Northern California, as seen on Wikipedia. Clearly, lunar eclipses pose some incredible photo opportunities!

I just wish it wasn't cloudy here :(
this system passing over minneapolis is intense!! the bass of the thunder makes me think my windows are about to go.
I think my building just got hit.
Brrr
34F here and the show is just getting going.
It's a long process to photograph and I have decided sleep is better than frozen nads :)
Zzzz
ok maybe not
This is an interesting page

A live eclipse photo submission map!
haha
I saw it at 4:30 this morning. It was orange. :) Nice link to the photos, PB. - It'll be cool to see what Dick gets.
Here's another cool link about eclipse news:

Northwood tornado damage - there is an awesome gallery here from the local paper that PCM linked us to the other day. The town was clobbered, with damage on every street. Especially see "Tornado damage in Northwood" on the upper left

Interesting article today!
"National Weather Services changes warning system"
The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, August 28, 2007
This fall the National Weather Service will change the way it issues severe weather alerts.
The agency hopes its new "storm based" warnings will promote safety by only alerting areas that lie directly in a storm's path.
Currently, if a tornado, flash flood or severe thunderstorm is threatening just one corner of the county, even residents in the opposite corner get a severe weather warning.
With advanced radar and digital communication, meteorologists can now track a storm's path over a much smaller area.
The weather service says warning only those in the path of the storm means there will be fewer warnings for everyone in the county, thereby increasing awareness.
The new warnings will include well-known landmarks like highways and rivers in targeting an area.
Here is a page from NWS that shows the new storm-based warning system that goes into effect on October 1st... look at the comparison from old to new...

Some minutes ago a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for portions of Wisconsin
Hey guys i have a question. I have a old video camera andwas wondering how to i tape something and put it on my computer if somebody can help my out.
Thanks
I didn't think the Eclipse was all that impressive, it was just a shadow here, didn't even get the red-orange color :(
Not really worth waking up at 4:00 am lol
Good pictures on Northwood Joe.
Matt what you might be able to do is find an older Video adapter that allows a VHS type hookup that would allow you to connect you camera and transfer video. You will also need a program that will work with the older video stuff.
Ok can you suggest a program that might work. Because i dont want to waist my time downloading stuff that doesnt work. Anyways thanks for the info Monty.
Me and my friends set up a tent in my yard and watched the whole thing..from 2:30-5:30. I got pictures of a tiny white dot lol and video of the moon when it was dark and turning red.
I think what actually happened last night was a cloud of leaking red fuel from the space shuttle finally made its way over north america.
What. Its possible.
Nasa has lied before.
haha
NOAA experts rate Northwood, North Dakota tornado an EF 4
Grand Forks, N.D., Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007 – After conducting a damage survey, officials from NOAA’s Eastern North Dakota weather forecast office in Grand Forks have determined the tornado that struck Northwood, N.D., Sunday evening was a low-end EF 4 on the Enhanced Fujita rating scale.
“The survey crew estimated winds to have been about 170 mph in the tornado at Northwood,” said Jim Keeney, weather program manager at Central Region Headquarters in Kansas City. “In the area where the strongest winds occurred, cars were lifted and thrown nearly half a mile.”
The Northwood tornado was one of several reported Sunday to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., and was the only one to hit a population center. The tornado tore through two Northwood mobile home parks, killing a 57-year-old male and injuring 18. Officials said there was damage to nearly every building in the town of 1,166 residents. Grand Forks surveyors said the tornado was on the ground for about 5 miles and reached a width of about ¾ of a mile wide.
Additional information is available on the Eastern North Dakota web page at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/crnews/display_story.php?wfo=fgf&storyid=9922&source=0.

Thats the latest on the Northwood tornado from the central region headquarters.
DAMN!!! I was planning on watching the eclipse and even capturing a few photos!! But as usual I always fall asleep and STAY asleep. Thats why I miss out on a lot of things. I woke up at 7 am but it was about over then.

Now there's a great name for a meteorologist. Greg Gust.
Hey Check out this time lapse video I found on the lunear eclipse. This video isn't the best but its a little something for those of us who missed out like me. Here is the link.....
http://www.koco.com/weatherblog/index.html
When you get there scroll down until you see the title that says lunear eclipse time lapse.
oh its spelled lunar not lunEar my bad.
Thanks for that info Ben...From the photos I've seen it looked like it was wrapped in rain. Does anyone know how much lead time they had on the warning? I'm assuming a substantial amount since it was such a long-lived supercell.
nobody is talking to me so I'm out!
Sometimes you people can be so unfriendly...ugh.
Reed, click where it says "Sunday Storm Timeline"
http://www.grandforksherald.com/
Hello? Is ther anyone here? I'd like to know, so I don't waste my time talking to air... lol
hey AJ whats up lol! I was asking myself the same thing
Well from reading the timeline, it was quite a active night...
That timeline suggest that there was just 9-11 minutes warning...but i would estimate anywhere from 10-15minute warning...seeing as how it was a ongoing severe weather event, if anyone understands what i mean.
Hey Zack! How's it going in your neck of the woods?
I've got some nice clouds building all around me, would you mind checking out SW Kansas, because my programs are down :( Again :(
Sure AJ I'll check for ya! Clouds are building over here too I think we both may be in for a few storms.
Northwood had a lot of warning, judging by the items in the timeline. In fact, according to what PCM said the other day, the one person who was killed knew there was a warning but he refused to go to the shelter... even though his wife tried to get him to come with her
That's a double whammy... ignore the NWS warning, then ignore your wife's warning!
WOW!! AJ, I believe you live in Garden City. If thats true you have a nice little line of storms heading your way. I'll keep you posted.
:D:D Best news I've had since Sunday! Thanks Zack!
And yes, I live in garden city. lol
Are you still here AJ??? Well I gotta go for now.
AJ,
To my understanding there is a cold front around your area which is generating scattered to numerous thunderstorms. the storms are not severe but have heavy rain and frequent cloud to ground lightning. It appears that this is the same front heading my way tomorrow. There are also storms to the south and east of me as well but these are airmass storms that were generated by a surface trough put of my a low down in texas and therefore these storms are not at all impressive and will diminish after sunset. the main threats down here is brief heavy rain and cloud to ground lightning.
Joe, I have my friend's warnings, my girlfriend's warnings, and my parent's warnings! I don't know which is worse! lol
Thanks Zack, I appreciate it! Like I said, my computer is being weird these past couple of days, and all my software is gone haywire :( It sounds like I can sit this one out at home, relaxed...
See ya Zack!
wow its one thing not listening to the NWS but your wife??? Thats just pathetic lol.
bye AJ!
Well, you can always get new friends, and you can always get a new girlfriend, so...
Plus your dad controls the keys!
I think that news item a little earlier today (scroll up) about the new method of storm-based warnings is really good news. It looks like it could cut down the number of people who are warned by 1/2 or more. Over time, that will cut down on "false" alerts and make people take them more seriously
This was the story as told by PCM. It was comment #190 out of 190 so maybe everyone didn't see it
Posted By PCM | August 27, 2007 @ 11:13 PM #
I'm not sure what good it does to require mobile home owners to have weather radios if they ignore the warnings. On our local TV news, they spoke to the wife of the man who was killed in Northwood. She went to a shelter when she heard the tornado warning. He insisted on staying in their mobile home and paid with his life.
Here in Grand Forks, the tornado warning sirens sounded Sunday night when a funnel was spotted west of the city. A woman I know who lives in a mobile home with her family stayed there. They said they could tell by watching the radar that they wouldn't be hit. That's not a chance I'd take, but they were apparently willing to risk it.
Well, you can't always have an effect on the stubbornness of human nature Joe. It's also about risk assessment, and some people are either ignorant, or easily thrilled. Whatever the case be, it's sad no matter how you look at it.
Froze pretty good here last night grrr
Wound up standing out in the cold taking pics anyway
Eclipses are creepy :)
...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 530 PM CDT FOR
SOUTHEAST CUMING...BURT AND NORTHEAST DODGE COUNTIES...
THE POSSIBLE TORNADO IS IN UEHLING NOW. TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY!!!

INDICATE A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH STRONG ROTATION AND A POSSIBLE
TORNADO. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR UEHLING...OR ABOUT 42 MILES
NORTHWEST OF OMAHA...MOVING EAST AT 35 MPH.
THE STORM WITH A POSSIBLE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR...
CRAIG BY 505 PM CDT...
TEKAMAH BY 515 PM CDT...
I wonder if the smaller, storm-based warnings are already being phased in. Most of the boxes look pretty focused. Whereas, a couple weeks ago when that storm went right over Andrew's house in MN, entire counties were getting lit up one after another..
For instance compare the storm-warned areas between NE/IA and WI/MI right now... the ones in NE/IA look like the new system, but the ones in WI/MI look like the old system
ok guys i live in sourthern wisconsin, click my name becaues im wondering is that little line ahead of the storms the wind part of it? or is it just something to do with the radar
Greg, it shows up even better on the Green Bay radar (click name). It's definitely a storm feature, but I don't know the correct verbiage to describe it. Leading edge of the storm, perhaps
It's the "flanking line", in chaser terminology. Of course, that usually refers to very severe storms, I've only used it in such a manner.
It could also be a wind gust out ahead of the storm... flanking line isn't totally correct.
ok well thats what i thought because all of the storms that ive seen, have been at night so when the wind would come threw i could see this really long white cloud and i just figured that is what that is on the radar thanks joe and AJ
Ya got me, Greg. I've seen them before on radar, but don't know what to call them or why there is a gap between the leading edge and the rest of the storm system behind it
Joe, I believe (emphasis on believe) that it has to do with a higher level wind traveling faster, therefore creating that leading edge. Like I said, I'm no expert, nor to I claim to be ;)
Okay boys, I think we're looking at the "gust front" or outflow boundary
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gust_front
Thank You!! I knew what it was, but not the correct terminology.
I think I'm getting sick... bleh... cold-like symptoms... blehx2...
Did you see this part?? I'd like to get verification from Reed on this one!
"Sometimes a gust front can be seen on weather radar, showing as a thin arc or line of weak radar echos pushing out from a collapsing storm. In most cases, these echoes represent insects that have been caught in the colliding winds at the front."
i left a link of the storms forming in manitoba severe thunder storm watch is in effect for some areas
Remember Jow, you got that off of Wiki... lol
Joe*! I must be getting sick.. lol :( blehlajs
We are getting pounded here in Omaha! Only going to be around for another 20 minutes or so though.
Aaahhhh... thunderstorms over me now... :D:D Nothing serious, but time to play Riders On The Storm perhaps...
For further information on gust fronts, please contact Warning Coordination Meteorologist Greg Gust at 701-795-5127.
haha Nice!
Hey Hey!! I'm home from work!
Did I miss anything good! I'm too lazy to read all the previous blogs! I didn't really capture much of anything last night. I'm gonna go over the vids now! but I need a new cam bad!
Reed, I wouldn't quite say it was a successful chase! But It was a good learning experience and a good run for the ol dodge!
Joe, your a hell of a good nowcaster/ navigator!!
What I am disappointed in is the fact I didn't go to Grand Forks when I wanted to!
Hey Brady! Not much is going on really... course I haven't checked in a little while... I have some rain dumpers over me now, and it's still pouring :)
I also think I'm getting sick with a cold... :(:( blehklsd...

Hey AJ is that the accual spelling??? of blehklsd......... Jut wondering.
More info on that long skinny line aka "gust front" that shows up on the radar next to so many of those storms today, for anyone who cares
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/gid/Web_Stories/2002/weather/08-26/aug2602.php
Outflow boundaries are produced in the following manner. When rain falls from a thunderstorm, some of the raindrops evaporate as they fall. The evaporation cools the airmass underneath the storm, near the ground. If the rainfall is particularly heavy, as is often the case with a thunderstorm complex, a large area of cold air will develop underneath the complex and surge out away from the storms. The reason the cold air moves out away from the storm is due to the fact that cold air is more dense than warm air (relatively warmer air surrounds the thunderstorm complex). Because of the density difference between the cold air and warm air, the cooler, denser air flows toward a region of less dense air. The leading edge of the surging outflow is called a gust front. A gust front separates the cold air produced by the thunderstorm, from the warmer and moister airmass out ahead of the outflow.
The radar image in figure 1 occurred at 9:17 AM, local time. The thin line of reflectivity extending south of the main thunderstorm complex was the leading edge of the outflow; the gust front. Note the surface observations (colored white). North of the boundary, temperatures are generally 6-7 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the warmer temperatures south of the gust front. Also of interest are the opposing surface winds where northerly winds gusting up to 35 mph existed north of the boundary, with weaker, 5-10 mph, southerly winds south of the boundary. The opposing winds created strong convergence along the leading edge of the gust front lofting insects and dust particles high into the air. The National Weather Service Doppler radar can detect the airborne agents; hence the fine-line denoting the location of the gust front.
urgh i hate that all the storms in wisconsin are weakining:(:( and the storms in iowa are so far away!!!
I here ya Greg. I think those storms are going to hit me tomorrow i think. But at the speed there going not until 730 tomorrow afternoon. I well, im taking my video camera to work with me tomorrow night.
After running the loop on the storm by Des Moines, it's pretty clear the gust-front line on the radar is not the "leading edge of the storm" as I first guessed it was, but is squirting out just south of the storm, the leading edge of the cooled air, just like it's described in that NOAA document. Woo hoo, learn something new every day! Gettin our dollar's worth on tv.net.
Joe i try to learn but when people tell me stuff it goes in one ear and out the other so ya
I'm a rookie still so I'll take all I can get!!
Hey it looks like its clearing up a lil!! Maybe I can see some of that eclipse!!
The eclipse is long gone, dude! They don't last very long.
Don't worry though, there'll be another one in February viewable from Minnesota too.
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEmono/TLE2008Feb21/image/TLE2008Feb21-Map1.GIF
Sorry Brady...You missed it
Oh yeah!! it was early! Duh!! I'm a day off still!
I'm not used to chasing on Monday!! Ah Well
I have a great view of a C-130 flying circles over my head!
Thats just as good in my book!
They're kinda boring anyway (unless you're a photographer I guess)
I've seen plenty in my day!
Let me know when there is a comet or something rare like that!
ive been out of town since being on here watching those supercells in north dakota sunday night...the damage in northwood is intense...i hope all the residents there have a speedy recovery. does anyone know if there are any storm shots of any of those storms on the net anywhere!?!?
I'm not much of a photographer, I'm a noob in that department too! But I'm learning little by little!
I need a good vid cam! Any suggestions?
I got a crappy video camera that is like 11 years old. So ya im saving up for a better video camera. thats if i dont go broke because of my car insurance
That is no doubt! =(
Brandon there are a couple good reports on Stormtrack in the storm reports and nowcast sections. The tornado seemed to be rain-wrapped so it looks like no one got really good photos but one chaser was on it at least and saw what they realized later was the tornado.
I am amazed at the similarity on radar between the Northwood storm and the Greensburg storm. They looked like the same "type" of supercell, if that makes any sense. The large hook in the same location, just the same "beefy" look to both storms, both storms were cyclic. Obviously there's not going to be exact comparison to the Greensburg storm since I don't expect to see a storm of that magnitude any time soon, but the Northwood storm had "the look" for a little while. Hope I'm making sense when I say that, just a layman's observation.
Also did any one see the pics of the cars from the car dealer in town thrown across the road into a field and crumpled like tin cans? I don't know how far they flew but it was a fair distance. There is also a report of a 1 ton fuel drum that landed in a field 2 miles outside of town, and the farmer stated that the drum had to have come from town since he knew of no one closer that had a drum like that.
Man it kinda sucks that something so beautiful can cause so much destruction. Man that would probably get me after a chase if i saw a house that was completely destroyed. I dont know its just me and my opinion.
No clue on vidcams. Never owned one. Get a used one and save the rest for gas money.
Andrew is this the pic you meant ^^^
Wow Andrew, sounds pretty darn destructive. And it DOES sound alot like Greensburg. I saw the radar loop; almost the same! The weather never ceases to amaze me...
hahaha Yeah Matt, that's how you spell it. I double checked. ;)
Still sick people... blalhlsfdslhsja
Brady, I have a Samsung SCD-86. I bought a two years ago at Radio Shack. It works like a charm, and it's super reliable and durable. I've dropped it n occasion, and it continues to film great! Only tiny downside is that it's not the best in lower light situations... but oh well.
Exactly Joe, thanks.
I am wondering if the tornado was multi-vortex. It seems the damage varies widely and there was a very narrow area of catastophic damage in one small part of town. I think the survey said it was .8 of a mile wide, maybe an individual suction tube caused the really bad damage.
Alright i was just wondering. Kinda weird way to spell it but whatever
That's a pretty good possibility Andrew. Multiple vortex twisters often cause lots of odd damage paths. I saw one in eastern Colorado a few years back, and it left the farmhouse intact, but one vortex tore down the road and flipped cars! No one was hurt fortunately:)
haha No problem Matt. It might be wrong, because of the fact that I can't see very well past watering eyes. lol
This is from another board, but someone posted that this was the first violent tornado in August since 2002.
I'm assuming by "violent tornado" they mean EF4 or higher.
I found something about some storms of the past around here!
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dlh/science/event_archive/arrowhead/arrowhead_svr.php
Brandon this one is for you:
http://tinyurl.com/388ytt
I guess you can sort of see it.
hey andrew, id be stoked if you could paste me the stormtrack link with the reports...
thanks...!
Wow!! Rain wrapped is right!! Still wish I went!
I'm off tomorrow! Maybe I should run and see if I can find some wreckage for us!
http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13585
No major Duluth storm in this century yet?? You are due
thanks man, i appreciate it...im thinking fellow weather geeks will think this link is pretty interesting...maybe some have already checked it out...
Spaceweather.com may be taking a serious hit after Good Morning America linked them and showed a couple of photos. I can't upload for some reason, it's giving me a blank page :(. Thanks Reed for posting this LOL, I just wanted to give you a head's up.
I drove around forever before deciding on some big, metal sunflowers for the foreground. Definitely worth staying up all night and have yet to sleep today while going to class allllllll day and now have a few hours of studying to do. :(
For those interested, click on my name for the lunar eclipse photos. Near Desoto, KS.
Just a hail storm, 1 or 2 Ice storms and our back to back blizzards last March! yes we're due!! When all the trees blew down in the BWCA on the 4th of July! We think a small tornado came over Our cabin about a half hour north of here! couldn't see it cuz of the rain, but the wind was insane!! It blew down Quite a huge stand of trees just a few hundred yards from our shack in the sticks!
Wow! Rain-wrapped is understated a bit. lol. When that happens, I truly become scared for my life, because I can barely see it!
(aahh choo!) dammit, I ran out of kleenex...
Dang wish we would have had clear weather.
Nice pics Dick.
Your thoughts on the Northwood tornado the other night? Have you seen the damage pics? Seems like there is a lot of controversy on the boards about whether it was as strong as it was rated...
Awesome Dick, nice job! (sniff, sniff)
Have you ever trick or treated on a snowmobile?? hehe
I have! Oct 31 1991 4 days after the Twins won the World Series We received Something like 36"! It snow for 3 days straight!
Well Brady, I had 6 to 7 inches of wet heavy snow on Friday the 13th, back in April! That was crazy enough! Your story totally beats that though. lol
From what I read somewhere once, tornadoes get rated according to the maximum damage they create at any point, so if that thing tossed a car for 1/4 mile, etc., I can see why there would be an EF4 rating, even if it was EF3 most of the time.
Andrew I think you may be allergic to storms... that is the problem
Well.. that was fun! Went out for something else.. ended up getting some nice storm pics!
Oops
"Andrew I think you may be allergic to storms"... should have been AJ there
Well Joe, I know sure as hell that I am allergic to something in kansas, because I have a harcore case of the sniffles. It blows, literally.
We all can only be so lucky Tim... lol
AJ, you're allergic to all of the cow s*** floating in the air! You never smell that stuff when you live there, but it greets you about 25 miles from town, when you go back.
The drive from Great Bend to Garden could quite possibly be in the top 10 for the worst scenery ever.
They should sentence Michael Vick to drive that route back and forth for 3 months doing 40 mph. He would rather get the chair I'm sure.
HAHAHAHA Thanks Dick, much appreciated. I can smell it in the morning... I guess that's why I'm 6'1" lol.
But.. but.. "Garden City" is such a pleasant sounding name! Sounds fragrant!
Sounds can be decieving Joe!
lol, I'm 6'4" and a friend is 7'1"....evidentally high levels of methane inhalation can make you tall. Back to homework. Keep it real.
Later dude! And I totally agree with the methane inhalation theory... lol
http://www.kfyrtv.com/skyspyslideshow.asp?image=2278
Looks like they're getting ready to carve that thing up for dinner
Holy Hell!! (sniff) There's no way I'm corepunching in a storm like that! I might need a windshield for longer than one trip! lol (ah choo)
Well, I"m out, I need the rest, and some pills, and a nasal strip... lol. G'nite!
Reed, hey! You NEED to make a new thread STAT! Here's why: We have RAIN in our forecast!!!!!!!!! *faints*
Heidi is ready to go siiiiingggging in the rain!
World's Highest Website ^ ... this website is over 11 miles high
Now that is one tall website!!
I know how ya feel Heidi!! We finally got our dose of some wet stuff!! Kinda late to help the lawn, But I'm sure it helped with the fire Danger!!
Now that is a stone!! I'll get the blender!!
Owned by graffiti, too funny ^^
Speaking of world's highest, also check out this other link below to the world's highest documented tornado... kinda cool:
http://tornado.sfsu.edu/RockwellPassTornado/
That's Crazy! Kinda makes you wonder!
They do say a tornado can happen anywhere in the world, anytime of year!! Still makes me wonder!
Brady, I'm sure you've seen this one before, but it's always worth looking at again!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-State_Tornado
Tri-State tornado... killed 695 people... path was 219 miles long... average speed of 62 mph... at one point was traveling 73 mph!
How would you track something like that on a radar screen that refreshes only every 5 minutes?? Every time it refreshed it would be another county over
Well i just got done going through all the new posts...and have this to say.
Brady i was prepared to give you street by street directions to the storm, and we would like to see any vid if possible...
That northwoods tornado was hella rain wrapped, I remember in my first year of chasing i was chasing a HP Supercell at Night...that was reportedly producing...I had heard of rain wrapped tornado's being virtually invisible, and the combination of High Precipitation, possibly producing, and knowledge of rain wrapped tornado's sent me running, I turned around...and made sure to reposition at first sign of rain.
And finally to the worlds highest website...I spent 5 minutes scrolling up the and noticed TONS of descrepancies from the orignal pattern.
Other than that...Nice pictures Dick.
Well Joe! Either way I had fun running around the state like that, I never woulda thought I would have someone in Seattle guiding me around Minny! I'm gonna try to get myself a lil more prepared for next time! Hopefully we can catch that big hose!
Brady do u carry a atlas in your vehicle?
Not sure what you are trying to say there, Ben. Got a screenshot of the discrepancies you thought you saw? The web designers would probably want to hear about it.
Brady... you just made me realize how pathetic this is. All the tornadoes are in the middle of the US. In the lower 48, what's the furthest corner away from the action you can get?? Florida? They have tons of tubes! New England? They get their share of tornadoes... Vermont, even NYC had one. California has twisters in the L.A. area. Nope, if you want to suck the hind teat, move up to Seattle! LOL
Ben I didn't get squat for vid of that storm! My crappy cam didn't pick up Lightning at all! I couldn't find the hail either!=( when I got back to town I had to upload my useless vids and recharge the cam! I went down the road a couple miles to a sweet lookout over NW Wisconsin to try to get the tail of it, but by the time I got there the fog rolling up the hill blocked all the lightning!=(
The only thing I have is a half ass vid of the storm that produced the tornaders as it went over the same place at about 4am or so!
Joe... What do you think would be to blame if that happened these days?? the gov, El Nino, global warming, Bush??
Quite frankly i forget how to take screenshots...but from the bottom if you scroll up 1/4 to 1/2inch...you start seeing space descrepancies, that dont show in the top half, someone got sloppy trying to finish it.
On top of that I dont have windows paint to paste into.
I do have an atlas somewhere and I was gonna grab it! and I realized I didn't when I was far from home! I'm an idiot like that!!
Brady, lol, if that happened I think it would be best to blame Reed Timmer! He seems to be pretty much in charge of tornado stuff nowadays.
Big Ben, I don't see those issues, maybe it's a browser problem? Anyway unless we generate an ungodly number of posts we don't have to worry about surpassing the world's tallest web page in this blog.
Brady - you made the right decisions on your chase! Remember when I first called you, and your decision was, do you go back to look at run-of-the-mill thunderstorms, or do you proceed south to be in place in case something initiated?? Imagine how you would have felt afterwards if some supercells blew up down south while you were up north gazing at lightning shows
Thats what I was thinking too! If it happened We woulda been all over it! It's kinda like fishing! did we wanna catch some sunfish or a big Muskie! I plan to go at it again as soon as the chance arrives!
It seems like we always get the heavy stuff in August!
My grandfather used to always snicker about storms on labor day weekend!
Joe, I am using Mozilla Firefox, I looked at the top 1 inch, and the Bottom 1 inch again, and still see discrepancies, from start to finish...Towards the finish the spacing of the lines gets screwed up in places, compared to the top. Looking 3 different times now, i find it hard to believe i am wrong, ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE, Im not claiming to be perfect.
Brady, Generally when im chasing, I dont look at the atlas although i carry one, While chasing i generally go off eyesight, such as seeing the hail core, rain shafts, or rotation, and reports over the radio, I pay attention to the towns i am going through, but dont look at the map, to try and find out where to go. The only time i use the atlas, is when i get off the storm i was on, and am ready to head back. At that time, i look for the last city name i seen or the city we are in on the atlas, and use it to get back.
It's too bad that stuff in North Dakota on Sunday wasn't a little further east... When those five supercells were all in a row, it was like that tune - - Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy!
Incredible to watch on radar on this site, glad I saw it
Where are you based Ben? Are you in one of the Dakotas, or associated with SevereStudios? By the way that place file for spotters works like a charm - thanks!! It will be cool to watch where all the pros go
Gotchya Ben! Thats kinda how I was running! just off of eyesight and Joe's nowcasting! Thanx again Joe!
I 'll get me a gps and a backup atlas as soon as I can!
I've just been a broke ass lately! We are trying to sell a house here so hopefully that will change soon!! hehe
I'll get some mobil inet goin on too so I can stay right in the pack!!
yeah that was something to watch!! Sure glad I opt'd for
the GR just in time!! ;)
Thanx Joe!! now that song is stuck in my head!!
I'm gonna have to play it over and over now! hehe
I am based out of Central IL, but i like to roam the whole state, And earlier this year, I made a trip up into Eastern IA, for the Derecho event. I ended up being hit by the storm, while trying to reposition.
Its funny you ask if i am asscociated with Severe Studios because i link them(not the first time its happened). And the answer is no. I am just a big fan of what they do, and support them.
Your welcome for the Spotternetwork placefile, Sometime you'll see me active in Central IL, although i do not have GPS, to update my locations. Theres only 20-30 different chasers that i've seen have GPS that updates there SN positions.
And in No way do i consider myself a professional chaser, I think of it as being a weather enthusiast, Besides that I work with my local ESDA or EMA, Currently i am a member of Tazewell county Emergency services and disaster agency, also known as ESDA, I am also a member of the Woodford County Emergency Management Agency, and the Peoria County ESDA. In our area those counties are called the "Tri County Area." And are the most local for me.
Thats my background...this year is my 4th year chasing.
Well, we rolled up interstate 44,
Like a rocket sled on rails.
We tore up all of our swindle sheets,
And left em settin on the scales.
oops... now you will never get it out of your head Brady!
New blog entry btw, it's about time
Ben-thanks will look for your icon next year perhaps?
Haha, Brady i know what you mean by broke lol. My Ford Taurus Transmission just took a crap.
I dont have GPS either, or mobile I-net, but by next year i will. Im trying to get in contact with the local news companies, and explain to them what i do. And see if i can get some sort of sponsorship or even a loan through them. I would like to have a set up close to Severe Studios by next year, although its doubtful. I doubt i'll be able to get a sponsorship through media outlets here, due to the lack of constant storms in the central IL area.
By constant storms i mean not as severe as the plains and not on a regular basis, it seems like the plains has.
Right now, i usually just listen to the warnings come in over the radio, and my Tazewell County emergency manager will usually contact me, with any interesting reports he hears.
Well Ben... Thanx for all the Help! sounds like your pretty passionate about what you do! I appreciate all the knowledge I can get! It's amazing how much can be learned here!
I turn wrenches for a living which is starting to get kinda old! I'm just here cuz I wanna see a tube and hopefully can share it with the fine people who post here!!
i watched the lunar eclipse at 4:30 in the morning it was awesome! i live in oklahoma so we didnt have the best shot like oregon but it was still pretty good.
I know it was cloudy here in Regina, Saskatchewan!
hey looks as if some storms are growing over kansas and oklahama at the moment wonder if they will do anything as the day goes on....
