A tornado watch has been issued for eastern ND and extreme northwest MN for this afternoon/evening until 11:00 pm CDT ahead of a strong cold front surging southeastward towards the Red River Valley. Towering cumulus can be seen on satellite along the front from southeast Manitoba southwestward into central ND. These towers could develop into supercells over the next few hours.

The 2100 UTC RUC analysis shows CAPE values of 4000+ J/kg from southwest Manitoba into eastern North Dakota, with 0-1 km EHI values of 3+. Mixing in the lower atmosphere has been strong so far today, reducing the low-level shear values and increasing LCLs. However, after around 7:00 pm CDT, as the lower atmosphere decouples, a strong low-level jet will develop and dewpoints will increase to around 70F. If storms initiate, and remain discrete into the evening, then isolated tornadoes will be possible! Stay tuned for updates.

Some-thing sure has been building up fast in NE North Dakota on the reflectivity scans...
Anyone checked out the killer gravity waves on satellite over Ontario/MN?
Very cool looking.
Reed! you are the man!!
Well, looks to me like that line is starting to uncork in central ND.
Nice Andrew!!
I saw the most incredible gravity waves on April 5, 2003 during the morning on top of the moisture inversion. I'll try and find pictures.
That cell in northeast ND is exploding!
Boom goes the dynamite!
Reed what do you see for tomorrow for the eastern part of MN? does it look like early supers out west and then a line forming?
Just curious, going to be outdoors all day tomorrow with kids...
The rotation over Portage La Prarie right now is nuts.. I'm watching the radar animation and the whole thing is spinning.. yet the low is showing as North east of winnipeg.. you'd think that'd be the center but watching the radar it's west haha.
has anybody been checking the storms growing to west???
They finally got rid of the clear-air VCPs out of KMVX... 'bout time!
Now if we can just convince Environment Canada to give us Velocity Doppler.. it's like the stone age up here ):
what's the new warning grid it's pink and says EWW.
Agree, GRlevel3 is cooool.
Joe pointed us to Puerto Rico radar when Dean was steaming past and we got to watch the eye for a while on cr248.
I got 8 days left to watch.
Certainly would be nice to have something like that for Canada.
Nice how few resources it uses.
Which radar site to park on this eve?
I think KMVX near Grand Forks might be the one at the moment PB
PB I might sit on Grand Forks tonight. The storms in NE North Dakota look like they're struggling a bit for now, but the one further south closer to Jamestown is kinda cooking.
Joe- JINX. lol.
Great minds stink alike!
Joe...in the last blog...you asked why Gr3 doesn't incorporate watch boxes...even though...they do incorporate warnings. There are place files, for those...i have a place file to show Meso discussions, Watches, and a place file that outlines my KILX warning area.
I will try and post the Meso discussion and Watch place files when i get home, although it may be hard to do from there..
Thanks, Big Ben. Place files is something that is still on my to-do list to explore... I'm aware of them but haven't got around to loading any yet. My e is joesurfer@usa.com if you have any juicy ones
Tim Jacobs,
"has anybody been checking the storms growing to west???"
Depending on who you talk to in this country, "west" can mean anything from Ohio to California... which state are ya looking at?
I expect the severe t-storm warnings to start popping up along the MB border here any minute.
Huh! There aint a cloud in the sky now!
humidity is slowly goin up! 57% now!
Look at the last 2 frames from the Woodlands radar.
Looks like north of Nopiming prov park is getting something.
Part of the same line? maybe it will pop all the way across soon. Too bad chasing anything that far east sucks cuz of the forest.
Maybe still time to catch it southeast?
Static radar.. east of Winnipeg's developing. Massive storm along the ND/MB/MN Border right now. Expecting a warning on there within this cycle probably.
Tim: I've been watching that one to the east for 10 or so minutes. Getting tall real fast. I'll give it 10 more minutes and if it continues to grow I'm gone. Head staight out to Dugald. Good viewing for quite a while if I remember correctly.
IT'S HAPPENING!
wheeee.... starting to see some red Cheerios!
Yup. There's a massive cell right NNW of Grand Forks right now.. wouldn't be surprised if we get a warning on it shortly. Haha Reed.. Bout time too.. I've EARNED my storms putting up with beautiful weather for 2 weeks in a row.
Warning up!
Whoops, hit enter too quick.. Severe T-storm Warning for S.MB now
joe: i ment the ones now going over colarado they look as if theyve been biulding for quite some time now
thanks tim!
ps: tor warning for ND
Reed, you are one sick dude.
Your prediction was 5 minutes early.
HOO HOO!!! HERE WE GO!!!
DANG!
What a supercell parade! 5 ladies all in a row.
yeah andrew, and for all we know there's a sixth or seventh up there beyond the radar!
ewwwww.... the number code I had to enter to post this post was 666
OOOH! its getting yellow out!

The cell that just missed Pembina crossing into MB is looking AMAZING as well. I wouldn't be surprised if a tornado warning was issued soon with that one as well. Running out of chase-able terrain up there!
Actually it turned right and is heading straight for Pembina!
Second cell down has a massive hook developing and an intense couplet!
I thought I read somewhere that storms that turn right tend to get nasty...
good eyes Reed! Look out Edinberg, Crystal, Hoople?
Yeah with the LLJ kicking in both of these cells have the chance to put down a big tornado...~90/70 in their environment!!!!
wow, things are looking insane!!! go south tim go south!!!
id give anything to be near that supercell west of grafton, ND...i bet that thing is beautifully structured, because its radar signature is perfect!....DAMN!!
Hi! Here's a link on a satellite image of ND
http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/satellite/displaySat.php?region=US&itype=vis&size=small&endDate=20070827&endTime=-1&duration=0
We need to install some radar sites right up on the border so we can see what's going on further up there

Maybe you can use this link Joe S. I don't now if it will help for manitoba radar..
http://www.umanitoba.ca/environment/envirogeog/weather/wxinfo.html
We're keeping our eye on the radar here in Grand Forks, ND. We could really use some rain, but without high winds and hail.
...finally it's linked to EC...sorry that's all I have found...
It looks asif the storm North of Scott City is picking up some pace .. Should hopefully be good later on ..
Take a look at this! http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/Fore-obs/radar.cgi
the reflectivity and velocity scans from the rap site is unreal...im excited and im like 16 hours away...!!! i hope pictures of this beast circulate somewhere...
awesome caro, thanks!
No probs Joe s. ;-)
Here's a webcam from Winnipeg...look on the left...

Can anybody show me what a "hook" looks like on a radar??? Is it supposed to be in front of the storm or behind it???
