WOW Reed cool photo!!!
impressive! its amazing what cold and warm air can do together.
Awesome job Dick M.! I think he said he freehanded this for quite awhile to get it perfect... he did a hell of a job!
See what I miss out on during August?
Nice shelf Dick.
LOL weather can do amazing things... whos with me?
That's big - NICE!
I'm with ya caleb!
wow thats an awesome picture!
btw the Greek government declared a state of emergency for the entire country.
Dick McGowan is an awesome photographer - I've been all through his website before. Great with natural lighting, and people shots too.
We have to tag along with Dick one of these days...
I saw that Cors, a huge fire or something caused it.
From the news report, it sounds like they suspect arson in the Greece fires.
Remember that ridiculous "photo" of a tornado in the UK newspaper a couple weeks ago, that photo-shopped concoction that was passed off to the readers as a real tornado laying waste to a metropolis? This one today also tickled my funny bone:
http://www.product-reviews.net/2007/08/25/fenton-tornado-leaves-over-130000-without-power
It's a real tornado all right, but it had NOTHING to do with the Fenton, Michigan tornado! The pic was taken in 1991, in Florida, no less. You would think they should tell the readers when they use stock photography!
It's an excellent photo Joe! And yeah, you'd think the photog. would be all over the users case. Or at least they will be...
That is a superb shot. I'd love to have a camera that captures nature like that.
That is an incredible pic!! Makes me wanna buy a new cam!!!
Here is a Shelf cloud video click my name
Sweet pic!! Would hate to be on the other side of that thing, hey?!
Well i would 70-80 MPH winds, hail as big as my fist, and best of all *TORNADOES* it would be the life!
Btw, Fenton tornado ^^^... this guy put together some shots of the tornado damage.
Joe it looks to me like that tornado may have been an EF2... but i might be wrong here is some more info click my name
Very interesting guys... I think it's pretty darn close, if not, an EF 2. It'll take awhile to find out.
Well, I'm off to run errands, have a good weekend!
Good find caleb. You may be right, EF1 or EF2.
Man awesome picture there Dick.
Just curious... was that picture color corrected in photoshop or was that the RAW result? Its amazing either way, but just curious from an editing standpoint.
Breathtaking image Dick!
Awsome picture Dick. Would have been fun to experience.

OF THIS DANGEROUS STORM...TAKE COVER NOW!
Dean, the more I look at that photo, the more I'm thinking it was shot at night and the shelf is being illuminated by lightning from within.
At first look it seemed super saturated.. but the orange glow could be from streetlights?
Anybody got a link to a larger size?
Beautiful anyway.
Thanks for posting this Reed. Great shot from Mr. McGowen. I called my kid (southbound on I-35) around 5 to tell him about this storm, which was going east across I-35 in Liberty,Mo. He had to take cover in Claycomo,MO at a Quik-Trip it was pelting so hard. My kid took a pic of this storm, but his phone didn't do as much justice as this one.
Nice job.
What part of town was this taken?
brandon what do you mean by sorry! did you do anything?
Caleb, I think Brandon was just saying that he got to post the warning before you had a chance - as if he didn't want to step on your reputation! ;-D
haha hey caleb...i just know that your the guy keepin us up to date on the tornado warnings around here! i guess i beat you to it!!!
lol yeah.... i found a video of the tornado in MI, the other day click my name
Nasty here in Central Ohio with at least 3 confirmed touchdowns. Trees down and some power outages scattered about. I will keep you posted.
gerb131 what nearest tv station is this tornado?
I have an uncle in Ohio! He's too good to get a hold of me though!=( What I'm wondering is about the two and three day report!! Hmmm...
Caleb, WBNS 10tv. It was nasty here for a long time with about 4 diff supercells criss crossing the area. So far I have heard about 5 touchdowns, 2 in Franklin and 3 in Newark/Utica causing some damage. Sun is out now and a beautiful end to a nasty day.
Thanks gerb131 I just wanted to see some live feed of a tornado!
Earlier about 5 they had towercam which overlooks the city you could see a wall cloud with the hail/rain shaft. As soon as some pics go up I will post the link.
yeah I just saw that it had a good anvil no presip but awsome view!
OH waite i did'nt see that sorry!!!!!!
Thanks for all of the kind words, I wish I would have not forgotten my tripod and wider angle lens!
Dean,
I shot the image in RAW, then always convert to jpeg. I use auto wb, and didn't mess with it in post-processing. I never mess with the colors. In this photo, I processed the RAW photo, I adjusted the levels, used highlights on the blown sky near the lightning flash and sharpened the photo due to softness acquired in converting it from RAW to jpeg, as well as resizing it. Total time takes me 2 minutes. For those who do not know about RAW photos, it's simply a JPEG photo on your camera (landscape, portrait, etc) without anything being applied to it. So when you snap a photo as "landscape" on your camera, your camera automatically does these things I mentioned above for you. So RAW basically lets you do it manually.
Every photo I have of it is purple, it's just what it looked like even with the orange tint coming off of the farm's street lights.
I bumped the ISO up to 800 because I forgot my tripod at home, opened the shutter to f/2.8, leaned my camera against my car at a 15-30 degree angle and held the camera as steady as I could for 8 seconds. Lightning just illuminated the details on this one perfectly. The shelf cloud kept looking better and better with the weaker the storm actually got. After this, I positioned east a few miles, and a roll cloud pushed ahead of it, along with scud, and ruined the structure to it :(.
Here is another one, that wasn't illuminated by lightning, and had just a hair of camera movement......
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y230/DickTwister/ekc3web.jpg
Of course the shelf cloud really looked better in person, a photo never does justice! If anyone would like any help on processing a photo, email me at dick at stormchasers dot org and I will help you out the best I can! I plan on doing a tutorial on it soon, because I"m really lazy and hate doing it, so it would be basic and simple.
Dick
Boy, Dick, I think I would FREAK if I WAS living in that house and saw that cloud over me. Great shot!
WoW!! Thats amazing!! I don't know squat about photography, I gots me alot 2 lurn! hehe
Dick, fantastic work!
A handheld 8sec exposure is pretty amazing.
The second one is also excellent.
Thanks for sharing.
Hey Dick, nice job! If you ever feel like it, swing west to Garden City and pick me up, we'll go catch a nice supercell! You should've been here last Monday, the photo opp. was awesome!
Click the name if you would like to see the smallest severe warned storms I've seen in quite a long time. I'd like to see a velocity scan!
Kim,
Hahaha, this storm wasn't even severe warned! It's amazing, you look at radar and think, "Hmm, what a crappy storm"......but I've come to realize that radar means nothing , I have seen rain showers, literally specks, with beautiful structure, and have seen nice looking storms on radar, that aren't so good. I'm a structure and large hail freak! That's why I chase, tornadoes are just a bonus.
AJ,
Like I told you before, I'm from the GCK! I went to Jennie Wilson elem, and KH junior high. You probably know my cousins, one of whom just graduated HS. Yeah, I saw Mike Umscheid's photos of that storm......he got some great shots. I watched that storm north of Scott City, it looked like it wanted to produce a tornado early on, and had such weak vertical shear too. Did you get any pics? There was a time in 1990, sometime in April.....(don't know how old you are), that there were 16 landspouts on the ground at the same time around GCK (Was even on TWC). I saw my first tornado that day after moving there from Texas, my father floored it down Main Street, as I just sat in awe looking out the window. Something I'll never forget!
Sorry dude, I forget your from the GC! And yeah, I'm a structure freak also, but I chase for both reasons: because I've seen the power of tornadoes, and because the clouds are purdy. lol btw, I'm 15. Born in '92. Only two years late!
I'll post the pics up in a little bit, they need to be formatted.
Here's the storm early on. It's the best one I captured.

Also, some straight line wind damage at Holcomb HS, taken by a friend of mine.

Oh, and I do know some of your cousins Dick. I went to Garfield, and then Georgia Mattews. Junior high was at Abe Hubert, and now I'm a big bad sophmore. I'm taking an intro to broadcasting class, so maybe I can start filming my adventures along with still photo :)
Dick, its amazing.......I was driving down I80 in Ohio, and their was the weirdest hanging cloud to right of the highway for miles! It never produced anything, although it looked like it could've! My husband is a photographer, I REALLY should have swiped some of his equitment before I LEFT...LOL. I know a bit just from watching him. I think the best photo's are the raw ones. Like you said. :)
Oh please... (stifles a giggle)
Not funny enough to rate a LMAO. Gong.
A simple "lol" would do. You forget: I'm a relatively immature high schooler; I hear that sort of thing all the time, whether I want to or not!
Well, I'm tired, and off to bed. Have a good weekend everyone!
I am not sure on how you can say that these comments “…sound bad for this site.” I disagree with your assessment about previous comments, LMAO! | August 25, 2007 @ 10:45 PM #. I did not know TV.net had rules on what kind of comments we can make as long as we stick to weather.
Nothing wrong with what they posted. Everyone including Reed does a great job with comments on this site!!!! Keep up the good work everyone!
Great Job, Dick!!! They are very nice pictures!
WOW!!! Awesome photo!!
Oh man!! I just got up from a lil 5hr cat nap!! yawn!
It felt good cuz I usually sleep about 4hrs a day!
I'm hoping things ripe'n up around here in the next few days! I'm ready to deploy!!
Yeah Jason that comment made absolutely zero sense!!
We all know who posted that...
Tomorrow looks interesting up there Andrew..in extreme northwest MN if a storm can fire!
Beautifull picture!
Reminds me a lot of mike his site. His pictures of storms are eyecandy.
Here take a look at his chase log of May the 10th: http://www.extremeinstability.com/05-5-10.htm
I'll get the rig filled up and ready to roll just in case something fires up there! I'll see if I can get a buddy to keep in touch with all of you if I hit the road! I guess we can only hope!!
Despite all the rain and flooding, Northern MN has barely received any precip the summer! Everything has been brown since early July! Burning bans are everywhere! Even charcoal grills!!=(
I pray we can get some rain before we burn up like a match!

Not sure yet? I plan on driving that way if I have to later!!
I'm in Duluth right now! I'm not sure what or where yet!
I'm hoping one of the pro's here will give us more detail in a bit!!
Check out the tornado outlook, guys, they upgraded to 5% up in northwestern Minnesota.
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1probotlk_1630_torn.gif
Good Morning Joe!! Thanx for the quick smile!!
Not a speck of anything on the radar yet, though
Partly cloudy and Beautiful here!! 73degrees (22c)!
south wind warming things up quick!! Humidity's only 52% though!
What does EnviroGuess Have to say about our neighbors to the north?
From what direction will things arrive if they show up in that 5% area in NW MN? Down from Canada, or across from ND? Maybe that's a Reed question..
Whoa, the Redskins-Ravens game last night was cut short due to thunderstorms. I thought football players were supposed to tough it out in all conditions
Winnipeg is right in the bullseye for today.
Click my name for a vid my first tornado (not funnel cloud cuz it touched down 75 feet from my friends house and I saw the aftermath)
BTW I didn't film it... Maybe I'll get lucky today!
Yeah! I wuz kinda wondering the same thing! Hopefully he can answer some of these questions for us!
Ah Man! My grlevel trial expired!! =( boooo
here is a video out of greece. check out those cloud colors
WOW!
Brady, you could try out SwiftWX... that's the one AJ uses. It says they give you two weeks free!
http://www.swiftwx.com
Amazing video Cors! Have they had a major drought down there this summer?
Hey Strike...nice tornado! Definitely looks like you could be in for some supercells today...I'm just now checking out the new models.
reed, yea and scorching temp of 115F with high winds
Just thought this might be an annual event since that was a year and a couple of days.
Start making your plans for next year folks!
Rare Tornado in Colombia (CNN video)
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2007/08/26/vo.columbia.tornado.ap
Caption: "Residents in Bogota, Colombia witness a tornado, which has never been seen in the country's capital."
Hehe!! Just downloaded it Joe! cheap skate me is too broke to pay for GR, but I'm gonna soon! I think GR will be a great feature to have on the water!
Hey Reed! That's great news! I'm ready to deploy at a moments notice!! No net on the road though so I'll have to figure some sorta link out !
Not suprised a tornado in Columbia would Have a White funnel! I guess God wants to party too!! hehe jk

We just got through that crap here a few days ago!
I thought summer was over, I even fired up the snowmobile and got er ready!! But summer is back for now!! and I'm glad cuz winter just last too long!!
Brandon: we couldn't have todays supercells without your crappy 10 degrees. Thanks for contributing!
LOL @ Brady!! Good one.
Cors: yeah, everyone knows those Greece fires are the hardest to put out.
Whoops... new blog entry, time to pick up lawn chairs and move again.
Sorry Mike!! I truly did not know that the picture was yours! I made a mistake in my posts, the two pictures look so similar! I apologize for that mistake! Not my intention to steal another chaser's pic.
I'll have the actual pic posted later on!
Hey Joe, My daugher was at that Redskin game. They were sitiing way up top and then had to get underneath, she said they had a great light show. WE all did in the D.C area They left at the beginning of the 2nd quarter just before they cancelled the whole thing! YEP, blame it on THE WEATHER.........!! NOTHING upsets a skins FAN more then that.
Haha Kim. Well, at least she probably got to watch the starters, since the starters usually play the 1st qtr or two of game 3 in pre-season!
I could only hope I'll take pictures like that! I'm a meteorology major.
peace
wow this is so cool i wish that i can go out and chase tornadoes like you guys but im not old enough.....
